Dexamethasone Decreases Cell-Cell Adhesion In The 235-1 Pituitary Tumor Cell Line, Phillip Richard Spangler
Dexamethasone Decreases Cell-Cell Adhesion In The 235-1 Pituitary Tumor Cell Line, Phillip Richard Spangler
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Physical contacts between cells are known to influence a broad range of biological activities. Investigations into the regulation of prolactin gene expression have shown that cell behavior within the pituitary may also be affected by adhesive contacts. To better understand the mechanisms that regulate cell-cell adhesive contacts in these endocrine cells, we developed a procedure that quantitatively assays homotypic aggregation in the rat pituitary tumor cell line, 235-1. We observed that treatment of 235-1 cells with dexamethasone (Dex), a synthetic glucocorticoid, not only reduces prolactin production but also decreases the reformation of cell-cell contacts. In two independent experiments, control cells …

Bt Corn & European Corn Borer
Seed companies are now marketing Bt corn, one of the first tangible fruits of biotechnology that has practical implications for U.S. and Canadian corn farmers. Bt corn hybrids produce an insecticidal protein derived from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, commonly called …

Demanding Schools: The Umchingwe Project And African Men's Struggles For Education In Southern Rhodesia, 1928-1934, Carol Summers
History Faculty Publications
From at least 1900 on, Africans in Southern Rhodesia, its successor Rhodesia and today's Zimbabwe, have demanded schools and education, leaving behind evidence of their demands in a wide variety of sources: mission records, government reports and the recollections of former students. Even more than demands for land, higher producer prices or higher wages, demands for education were explicit attempts to negotiate not just economic issues, but also a place within Southern Rhodesia's increasingly segregated culture and society. But what, exactly, did students, parents and would-be students want, and were these demands being met? Fathers petitioned for schools for their …
An Investigation Of The Acarine Fauna Of Rehabilitated Bauxite Mines In The Northern Jarrah Forest, Alex Cuccovia
An Investigation Of The Acarine Fauna Of Rehabilitated Bauxite Mines In The Northern Jarrah Forest, Alex Cuccovia
Theses : Honours
The northern jarrah forest relies on efficient nutrient cycling for its growth and long term sustainability. The decomposition of organic matter and the recycling of nutrients in such ecosystems are facilitated through the interaction of microflora with a myriad of invertebrates. The recolonisation of invertebrate fauna to rehabilitated bauxite mines is thus of critical importance to the long-term success of rehabilitation. This study investigated the soil and litter mite fauna, important components of the invertebrate community well known for their numerical dominance and high biodiversity. A spring sampling of the mite fauna was undertaken, employing standard soil and litter sampling …
Having The Whip-Hand In Middlemarch, Daniel Karlin
Having The Whip-Hand In Middlemarch, Daniel Karlin
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
In one of the first reviews of Proust's Du cote de chez Swann, appropriately published in the journal Le Temps, in 1913, the critic Paul Souday takes Proust to task for writing too much like an Englishman. 'His copious narratives have something of Ruskin and Dickens in them,' Souday remarks; and he might easily have added George Eliot, whom we know Proust to have read and admired. Souday goes on:
This superabundance of trivial events, this insistence on suggesting explanations of them, is frequently met with in English novels, where the sense of life is produced by a kind of …
The Twenty-Fifth George Eliot Memorial Lecture: The Larger Meaning Of Your Voice: Varieties Of Speech In George Eliot, Raymond Chapman
The Twenty-Fifth George Eliot Memorial Lecture: The Larger Meaning Of Your Voice: Varieties Of Speech In George Eliot, Raymond Chapman
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
When Ladislaw has watched and listened to Dorothea in the Vatican Museum, he says to the painter Naumann that language is superior to painting and 'gives a fuller image, which is all the better for being vague.[ ... ] This woman whom you have just seen, for example: how would you paint her voice, pray? But her voice is much diviner than anything you have seen of her.' The novelist does in a way paint the voice, using the visual signs of written language to convey an auditory experience.
Written dialogue may be naturalistic and idiomatic in its choice of …
Review Of George Eliot And Europe, John Rignall
Review Of George Eliot And Europe, John Rignall
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
George Eliot and Europe arrives at a timely moment, when the nature of the relationship between Britain and the Continent is at best ambiguous, and when the parameters of 'Europe' are anxiously contested. In some ways, things have not altered much since the middle and late nineteenth century: nationalism, immigration, militancy, cultural isolationism - all of these were as important to nineteenth-century ways of thinking as they are today. This collection of essays, based on a conference and part of a series which seeks to understand Europe in relation to the rest of the world, insists that in order to …
Review Of The Mill On The Floss
Review Of The Mill On The Floss
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
In this lamentably impoverished adaptation by Hugh Stoddart (directed by Graham Theakston), a character identified as Sophy Deane (played by Joanna David) masqueraded as one of three Dodson sisters. That George Eliot created a unit of four sisters is of minor consequence, since their individuality apparently merited so little concern that it was deemed fitting to amalgamate the lachrymose Sophy Pullet with Lucy Deane's mother, Susan - an expedient that, instead of giving us two for the price of one, merely effaced them both. In effect, every opportunity to avoid the danger of distinguishing one sister from another appeared to …

Assisted Suicide: The State Versus The People, John P. Safranek, Stephen J. Safranek
Seattle University Law Review
This Article will examine the Ninth Circuit's appeal to personal dignity and autonomy to justify a constitutional right of assisted suicide in the face of pluralist opposition, that is, a law duly enacted by a majority of elected representatives in a state or by the people directly. Scrutiny of the Ninth Circuit's decision will reveal the formidable jurisprudential obstacles to basing a right to assisted suicide on dignity and autonomy, obstacles the Supreme Court refused to overcome in revoking Compassion in Dying. This examination is divided into three parts: the first analyzes attempts to justify rights on the principle …

The Impact Of Comprehensive Institutional Assessment On Faculty, Tracey Sutherland, James Guffey
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
In this age of accountability, colleges and universities are being called on to provide evidence of their effectiveness. As a result, comprehensive assessment initiatives are being implemented on most campuses, requiring increasing numbers of faculty to become involved. Beginning with an overview of a faculty-driven assessment model, this article describes specific roles faculty play and the results of a study in which faculty describe how their involvement influences their teaching and professional development. The primary purpose of faculty development is to improve the learning environment. Faculty participation in institutional assessment efforts enhances that environment. The results of the study provide …
Review Of This Fragile Land: A Natural History Of The Nebraska Sandhills By Paul A. Johnsgard, Bob Ross
Review Of This Fragile Land: A Natural History Of The Nebraska Sandhills By Paul A. Johnsgard, Bob Ross
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This Fragile Land, though written for a popular audience, is not intended for children or for light bedtime reading. In language midway between academic discourse and good literary prose, Paul Johnsgard characterizes the plant and animal communities of the Sandhills thoroughly- and with humor and imagination.
Part One describes the "geology and historical geography" of the Sandhills region and its borders; it is the only part that might be tedious for some. In his preface, Johnsgard advises readers to begin with Part Two and skip-and-sample backward. In five chapters, he details the geographic relationships of species' habitats to one …
A Casebook For All Seasons? Cases And Materials On Contracts, 5th Edition By E. Allan Farnsworth & William F. Young, Geoffrey R. Watson
A Casebook For All Seasons? Cases And Materials On Contracts, 5th Edition By E. Allan Farnsworth & William F. Young, Geoffrey R. Watson
Seattle University Law Review
By any measure, Farnsworth & Young's Cases and Materials on Contracts is one of the leading American casebooks on contracts, perhaps the leading casebook. Part I of this Review considers the book's merits as a tool for teaching contract doctrine. In this respect the book excels. Part II considers it as a tool for introducing students to broader perspectives on contract law. In this respect the book's success is somewhat less complete.

The present work was conducted in order to determine an adequate variety in the processing of small corn, in which a monitoring of all the cycle in cultivation was conducted. The behavior of the small corn was analyzed in the laboratory before the presence of three antioxidants, ascorbic acid, acetic acid and sodium sulfate in two concentrations in addition to subjecting them to thermal treatments that allows us to obtain a pleasant product for the consumer that is both resistant to treatment and nutritious for the health. The results indicate that the best variety of corn is muruchi yellow, the …

A Field Trip To Benetton And Beyond: Some Thoughts On Outsider Narrative In A Law School Clinic, Carolyn Grose

This essay explores the process of teaching students—and ourselves—to listen to and accept different versions of reality. Such exploration results in a proposition that is easy to state but difficult to accomplish: that in order to achieve this goal, we must challenge the students' "common sense”—their sense that they "know" how people act—by offering examples of behaviors that differ from that knowledge, without triggering the very "common sense" we are trying to combat. Toward this end, the first section of the essay presents a hypothetical initial interview with a client, and the student interviewer's reactions to her, which reflect the …
Establishment Of Kura And Red Clover On A Soil And Mine Spoil, David C. Ditsch, Michael Collins, Norman L. Taylor
Establishment Of Kura And Red Clover On A Soil And Mine Spoil, David C. Ditsch, Michael Collins, Norman L. Taylor
Agronomy Notes
Numerous benefits result from the addition of forage legumes to livestock diets. Superior nutritive value and intake of legume forage generally increase individual animal productivity compared with grass alone. This is particularly important with tall fescue where dilution of the diet with legumes can partially alleviate toxicosis associated with endophyte fungus infected fescue (Acremonium coenophialum). Unfortunately, short-term persistence of most legumes requires periodic reestablishment, adding to the cost of forage production and complicating pasture management.
