Beyond Cultural And National Identities : Current Re-Evaluation Of The Kominka Literature From Taiwan's Japanese Period, Sung Sheng, Yvonne Chang
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報
This paper is an offshoot of a larger, ongoing project that intends to deal with the relationship between various artistic formations and the dominant culture in Taiwan's post-1949 era. Though the lifting of martial law in 1987 has demarcated this era into two drastically different periods and a clearer contour of the new period seems to be just beginning to emerge in the mid-1990s, various cultural forces are still busily negotiating with each other. Nonetheless, there seems to be a general consensus as to what constitutes a core of the new dominant culture: the spirit of pen-t'u, or a nativist …

The Marine Corps In Vietnam: An Examination Of Cohesion And Effectiveness At Khe Sanh, Gregory L. Davenport
The Marine Corps In Vietnam: An Examination Of Cohesion And Effectiveness At Khe Sanh, Gregory L. Davenport
History Theses & Dissertations
The Marine defense of the Khe Sanh Combat Base in 1968 provides an isolated model to study combat cohesion and effectiveness. Focusing on Companies K and L of the 3d Battalion, 26th Regiment, reveals that cohesion and effectiveness were composed of four interlocking components: universal, cultural, institutional, and situational. Universal sources include the primary group, ideology, esprit de corps, small unit leadership, and social systems. Culturally, Marine recruitment images and pop-culture literature and cinema, which highlighted the Corps and combat as epitomizing manhood, influenced the Khe Sanh marines. Institutionally, the Corps used Marine history and gender manipulation during boot …
The Detoxification Of Petroleum Contaminated Coastal Plain Sandy Soil Using An Amended Vermicomposting Approach, John Charles Kraemer
The Detoxification Of Petroleum Contaminated Coastal Plain Sandy Soil Using An Amended Vermicomposting Approach, John Charles Kraemer
Health Services Research Dissertations
This study explores the feasibility of utilizing an amended vermicomposting treatment approach for detoxifying petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated sandy soil. The bench-scale testing of gasoline and diesel contaminated soil using three test soil vessels and one control soil vessel was performed in a laboratory setting for a six week time period. The control soil received no treatment other than distilled water to maintain soil moisture. Treatment 1 consisted of direct application of liquid municipal biologic sludge on a weekly basis. Treatment 2 consisted of the addition of 30 Eisenia foetida earthworms and distilled water. Treatment 3 consisted of direct application of …

Delaware & Hudson Revisited, John Copeland Nagle
Delaware & Hudson Revisited, John Copeland Nagle
Journal Articles
Four score and eight years ago, the Supreme Court decided United States v. Delaware & Hudson Co., a little remembered case holding that a federal statute prohibited railroads from shipping coal that they own across state lines. The statute at issue seemed to bar any railroad company from transporting any article that it had produced, but a group of Pennsylvania railroads objected that the statute violated numerous provisions of the Constitution. The Court dodged those constitutional questions by reading the Act narrowly to apply only if the railroad still owned the coal at the time of shipment. Justice Edward White …
Probabilistic Networks And Inferred Causation, Christian Borgelt, Rudolf Kruse
Probabilistic Networks And Inferred Causation, Christian Borgelt, Rudolf Kruse
Cardozo Law Review
In this article we discuss two related subjects. In the first place, we explain in a tutorial manner the technique of reasoning in probabilistic network structures, which is based on the idea of decomposing a multi-dimensional probability distribution and drawing inferences using only the parts of the decomposition. Secondly, we consider the relations between the structure of a multi-dimensional probability distribution and the underlying causal structure and examine an algorithm which tries to infer the causal structure from the probabilistic structure.

Bat Research, Patricia W. Freeman
Bat Research, Patricia W. Freeman
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
In our research, we capture bats with a net 50 to 200 feet long set up between poles. Usually we net over water to capture bats as they drink or forage. Sometimes we rig the net so it can be moved up and down like a sail between two secured lines or poles so we can sample what flies high among the trees. Netting helps us to discover where each species occurs in the state [of Nebraska], and we also can determine an individual's age, sex, reproductive condition, and diet.
Calculation Of Heavy Ion Inactivation And Mutation Rates In Radial Dose Model Of Track Structure, Francis A. Cucinotta, John W. Wilson, Mark R. Shavers, Robert Katz
Calculation Of Heavy Ion Inactivation And Mutation Rates In Radial Dose Model Of Track Structure, Francis A. Cucinotta, John W. Wilson, Mark R. Shavers, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
In the track structure model, the inactivation cross section is found by summing an inactivation probability over all impact parameters from the ion to the sensitive sites within the cell nucleus. The inactivation probability is evaluated by using the dose response of the system to gamma rays and the radial dose of the ions and may be equal to unity at small impact parameters. We apply the track structure model to recent data with heavy ion beams irradiating biological samples of E. Coli, Bacillus Subtilis spores, and Chinese hamster (V79) cells. Heavy ions have observed cross sections for inactivation that …
Analysis Of Enhancer Function Of The Hs-40 Core Sequence Of The Human Alpha-Globin Cluster, Hsiaoli Chen, Christopher H. Lowrey, George Stamatoyannopoulos
Analysis Of Enhancer Function Of The Hs-40 Core Sequence Of The Human Alpha-Globin Cluster, Hsiaoli Chen, Christopher H. Lowrey, George Stamatoyannopoulos
Dartmouth Scholarship
HS-40 is the major regulatory element of the human α-globin locus, located 40 kb upstream of the ζ-globin gene. To test for potential interactions between HS-40 and the β- or the γ-globin gene promoters in stable transfection assays, the HS-40 core sequence was cloned upstream of either the β promoter or the γ promoter driving the neomycin phosphotransferase gene and enhancer activity was measured using a colony assay. In K562 or in MEL cells, enhancer activity of HS-40 was higher than that of the individual core sequences of the DNase I hypersensitive sites (HS) of the β-globin locus control region …

The Impact Of Community Oriented Policing In Omaha, Nebraska, Brad D. Cleeton
The Impact Of Community Oriented Policing In Omaha, Nebraska, Brad D. Cleeton
Student Work
Community oriented policing (COP) has been adopted by a number of police departments throughout the country as a new policing philosophy. Some of the departments have implemented it in high crime areas and others have used it city-wide. The Omaha, Nebraska Police Department is currently in the process of implementing COP in the entire city. This has occurred gradually since 1989 when 15 officers were assigned to work in Omaha’s low-income housing developments. In 1990 these officers formed the Selective Patrol Unit and started practicing community oriented policing. A bicycle patrol was added in 1992 and COP expanded to other …
History Of The Service-Learning It Requirement In Maryland, Kathy Megyeri
History Of The Service-Learning It Requirement In Maryland, Kathy Megyeri
Service Learning, General
Schools in Maryland have long provided some opportunities for students to volunteer. There have been the usual walk-a-thons, canned-food drives, visits to the elderly, and tree-planting projects. Building on this tradition, in 1985 the Maryland State Board of Education enacted a requirement that all school systems offer courses and programs in community service, open to all students, for elective credit, to provide opportunities for students to reach beyond themselves to help others. Two hundred of Maryland teachers were trained by the state, and during the 198889 school year, over 1,000 students were engaged in community service projects for credit (Maryland …

Choice Points:Creating Clinical Qualitative Research Studies, Paul V. Maione
Choice Points:Creating Clinical Qualitative Research Studies, Paul V. Maione
The Qualitative Report
Today, more psychotherapists are seeing the utility of studying their own and others' therapeutic work. With the growing popularity and acceptance of qualitative methods, the research process takes on special significance for the clinician/researcher. Using qualitative methodologies, therapists can conduct studies that are immediately relevant to their therapeutic work. In this paper, I discuss eight decisions or "choice points" clinician/researchers face when conducting clinical qualitative research studies. The choices I discuss are not all inclusive, yet they are representative of the choices most clinical qualitative projects required.
Chaos In The Clinic:Applications Of Choas Theory To A Qualitative Study Of A Veterinary Practice, Eleanor Craven Brennan
Chaos In The Clinic:Applications Of Choas Theory To A Qualitative Study Of A Veterinary Practice, Eleanor Craven Brennan
The Qualitative Report
This paper is the result of a twelve hour participant observation study of a local, private veterinary practice in southeastern Pennsylvania. Field notes and semi-structured interviews, the result of naturally occurring conversation between me and practice members, were taken over a twelve week period, one hour of site visit each week. Using a grounded theory methodology, categories of social interaction among veterinarians, veterinary technicians, clerical staff, owners and animal clients were assembled, discarded and re-assembled. The resulting categories were analyzed using the conceptual framework of chaos theory and the principles of uncertainty. It appears that the most striking feature of …

Breeding Soundness Examination Of Rams, Clell Bagley
Breeding Soundness Examination Of Rams, Clell Bagley
All Current Publications
The objective of a breeding soundness examination (BSE) of rams is to evaluate and classify their potential breeding ability. This process should include evaluation of their physical condition as well as an evaluation of the semen itself. A BSE does not include an evaluation of sex drive or breeding behavior because there are no standardized criteria by which to judge these. Their best evaluation at present will come from observation of the rams breeding behavior after introduction into the ewe flock.
Caged Gorillas, Sandra Dee Holcombe
Caged Gorillas, Sandra Dee Holcombe
Institute for the Humanities Theses
I wrote a full-length comedy/drama for the stage. My purpose in writing this play was to show how people deal with life in their quest for freedom. The play is set in the present, the morning of Christmas Eve, in Norfolk, Virginia. The characters are mildly to extremely eccentric, and the major story line deals with a woman who traps her husband in his mall candy shop. Subplots include the mother waiting for her kidnapped Baby Jesus to return, finding a dead mouse, and freeing a caged mall zoo gorilla.
