The Role Of The Hepatic Vagus In The Pathogenesis Of Fever, Christopher Todd Simons
The Role Of The Hepatic Vagus In The Pathogenesis Of Fever, Christopher Todd Simons
Dissertations and Theses
Recent evidence has suggested a role of vagal afferents in the pathogenesis of fever. Although bilateral truncal subdiaphragmatic vagotomy has been shown to attenuate the febrile response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interleukin-1, no study has yet been able to verify which of the five subdiaphragmatic vagal branches (viz., the anterior and posterior celiac branches, the anterior and posterior gastric branches, and the hepatic branch) is responsible for communicating this signal. The present study tested the hypothesis that the hepatic vagal branch mediates pyrogenic signals from the periphery to the brain. Male Wistar rats underwent one of four selective …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Breed differences in performance characteristics are an important genetic resource for improving efficiency of bee} production. Diverse breeds are required to exploit heterosis and complementarity through crossbreeding and composite populations to match genetic potential with diverse markets, feed resources and climates. Beef producers are under increasing pressure to reduce fat while maintaining or improving tenderness and palatability of products. No single breed excels in all traits of importance to beef production. Previous results have shown that Bos indicus X Bos taurus (e.g.. Brahman, Sahiwal and Nellore sired F1cows out of Hereford and Angus dams) crosses were exceptionally productive and efficient …

Reversal Of Parkinsonian Symptoms In Primates By Antagonism Of Excitatory Amino Acid Transmission: Potential Mechanisms Of Action., I. J. Mitchell, C. B. Carroll

Parkinsonism is characterised by overactive glutamatergic transmission in the cortico-striatal and subthalamo-medial pallidal pathways. Local blockade of glutamatergic transmission in these pathways can alleviate parkinsonian symptoms. The effectiveness of the treatment, however, is often limited by the simultaneous appearance of unwanted side-effects. These side-effects, including ataxia and dissociative anaesthesia, are particularly problematic when N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonists are used. In an attempt to overcome these problems we have attempted to manipulate excitatory amino acid (EAA)-mediated neurotransmission indirectly by targeting the NMDA receptor associated modulatory sites. We review evidence which demonstrates that antagonists for both the NMDA associated glycine and polyamine sites …

Promulgating Requirements For Admission To Prosecute Patent Applications, Michelle J. Burke, Thomas G. Field Jr
Law Faculty Scholarship
Among federal agencies, the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office is unique in its ability to require attorneys to submit to special requirements, such as passing a six hour examination, before being permitted to practice before it in patent cases. Indeed, the Supreme Court has held that an individual so admitted to practice before the PTO need not comply with state requirements otherwise applicable to those practicing law.
The first part of this article discusses how this requirement came to be. It then discusses how the PTO determines whether an individual is fit to sit for the patent examination, focusing …

Kallistatin is a serine proteinase inhibitor which binds to tissue kallikrein and inhibits its activity. The aim of this study is to evaluate if kallistatin has a direct effect on the vasculature and on blood pressure homeostasis. We found that an intravenous bolus injection of human kallistatin caused a rapid, potent, and transient reduction of mean arterial blood pressure in anesthetized rats. Infusion of purified kallistatin (0.07–1.42 nmol/kg) into cannulated rat jugular vein produced a 20–85 mmHg reduction of blood pressure in a dose-dependent manner. Hoe 140, a bradykinin B2-receptor antagonist, had no effect on the hypotensive effect of kallistatin …

Neonatal Hypersusceptibility To Endotoxin Correlates With Increased Tumor Necrosis Factor Production In Mice, Vitaliano Cusumano, Giuseppe Mancuso, Francesco Genovese, Maria Cuzzola, Maria Carbone, James A. Cook, Joel B. Cochran, Giuseppe Teti

Septic shock is a major cause of mortality in neonates. The hypothesis was tested that neonatal, age is associated with altered sensitivity to shock-inducing bacterial products or proinflammatory, cytokines (or both). Mice of different ages were inoculated with various doses of lipopolysaccharide, (LPS), superantigenic staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB), or recombinant tumor necrosis factor-α, (rTNF-α), alone or in combination with the sensitizing agent D-galactosamine. Neonatal mice were, markedly more susceptible to LPS-induced lethality but more resistant to SEB than were adults (P, < .05). Mice of different ages did not differ, however, in their sensitivity to lethal activities of rTNFα. Neonatal susceptibility to LPS and SEB correlated directly with plasma TNF-α but not IFN-γ, levels, which was confirmed by TNF-α and IFN-γ blockade experiments. These data document, marked age-related differences in the pathophysiology of septic shock and suggest that IFN-γ is, not an obligatory mediator of either LPS- or SEB-induced lethality in neonates.
