A Pouplation Genetic Study Of Wild Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In Matagorda Bay, Texas, Joel Stephen Lenox
A Pouplation Genetic Study Of Wild Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In Matagorda Bay, Texas, Joel Stephen Lenox
Dissertations and Theses
A long-term photoidentification study was initiated in response to an unusually high incidence of bottlenose dolphin mortality between Corpus Christi and Matagorda Bays, Texas. Blood samples from 36 captured and released animals were analyzed using three genetic techniques; mtDNA haplotyping, nuclear DNA fingerprinting and electrophoretic analysis of hemoglobin. Two Hinf I mtDNA haplotypes previously described in bottlenose dolphins from other locations within the Gulf of Mexico were discovered. Similarity Indices (SI) were calculated based on nuclear DNA fingerprinting data. These SI values were used as a relative measure of relatedness between two individuals run on the same gel. Means of …

Needs Assessment For Applying Photovoltaics To Disaster Relief, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young
Needs Assessment For Applying Photovoltaics To Disaster Relief, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young
FSEC Energy Research Center®
When disaster strikes, such as a hurricane, flood, tornado, or earthquake, it can leave many people without adequate medical services, portable water, electrical service and communications. It can be as destructive as Hurricane Andrew, which left several hundred-thousand people homeless. Those fortunate enough to survive the disaster could be without local utility power and other services for long periods of time as services are restored.
When such disasters occur, emergency management teams, the military, and many public and private organizations respond with massive relief efforts. Dependency on electrical utility power becomes pronounced as emergency services are rendered and rebuilding begins. …

Long Dormancy, Low Slip Rate, And Similar Slip‐Per‐Event For The Emerson Fault, Eastern California Shear Zone, Charles M. Rubin, Kerry Sieh
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Excavations in a playa along the 1992 rupture of the Emerson fault reveal evidence of two paleoseismic events, with only one large prehistoric rupture in the past 15 millennia. Accelerator mass spectrometer radiocarbon ages of charcoal from playa sediments and from fault‐scarp colluvium directly beneath the playa beds indicate that the last large prehistoric slip event occurred about 9000 ka. Trench‐wall exposures revealed clear evidence of at least one pre‐9 ka rupture at the playa site. The event horizon of this earthquake is between two pedogenic carbonate layers that have radiocarbon ages of 14.8 ka and 24.1 ka, implying that …

Ecology Of Bighorn Sheep In Relation To Habitat And Oil Development In The Little Missouri Badlands., Roger Sayre
Ecology Of Bighorn Sheep In Relation To Habitat And Oil Development In The Little Missouri Badlands., Roger Sayre
Theses and Dissertations
I conducted field research on bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana) in western North Dakota to evaluate their distribution, habitat use, activity patterns, and responses to disturbance. The study was conducted May-December from 1992-94, at Magpie Creek, an area with a high density of roads and oil wells, and Moody Plateau, with a low density of roads and oil wells.Radio-collared ewes (n = 8) at Magpie Creek used steep non-vegetated terrain more than available during summer, but less than available during fall. They used closed juniper areas less than available during summer and fall, but used disturbed habitats more than available …

An Experimental Method To Determine Micromechanical Properties Of Thin Films Using The Atomic Force Microscope, Brandon Comella
An Experimental Method To Determine Micromechanical Properties Of Thin Films Using The Atomic Force Microscope, Brandon Comella
Theses
A promising method has been developed to determine micromechanical properties of thin film materials. Metal and ceramic thin films are used extensively in the computer microprocessor industry and in the relatively new field of Micro- Electromechanical Systems (MEMS). The push for miniaturization and increased performance out of the computer microprocessor and MEMS devices have pushed materials to their limits. Micromechanical properties are very difficult to obtain due to the lack of adequate testing equipment on the microscale. The atomic force microscope (AFM), most commonly used as an imaging tool, lends itself to mechanical interaction with the sample surface by means …

Exploration Of Social Power Differences Between The Sexes: A View From The Transsexual Experience, Terry Dickelman
Exploration Of Social Power Differences Between The Sexes: A View From The Transsexual Experience, Terry Dickelman
Theses and Graduate Projects
This study examined the social power and status differential between men and women from the perspective of transsexual individuals. Eight transsexuals, took part in two separated focus group sessions held on different evenings. Five open ended questions designed to examine power differences were asked. Findings indicate men and women experience life differently and are treated differently, both positively and negatively, across a wide variety of situations. Although participants were asked to view their gender experiences in discrete categories, it was extremely difficult for them not to discuss their transition process and those experiences unique to the transsexual as inherent components …

A Study Of The Perceptions Of Leaders In The California Animal Welfare And Control Fields Regarding The "No-Kill" Philosophy, Marcia Mayeda
A Study Of The Perceptions Of Leaders In The California Animal Welfare And Control Fields Regarding The "No-Kill" Philosophy, Marcia Mayeda
Master's Theses
This study explores whether the beliefs, attitudes, and policy practices of California animal welfare and control leaders are accurately reflected and in accord with position statements encountered in the animal welfare literature regarding the no-kill philosophy. Key issues examined include responsibility for animal control, mission fulfillment, quality of life for sheltered animals, public expectations of animal welfare and control agencies, financial impacts of various policy options, terminology in current usage, and future trends. Study findings demonstrate that the literature is not an accurate reflection of leaders' perceptions. Rather, the findings suggest that there is in actuality far less disagreement between …
