Climate And Caribou: Effects Of Summer Weather On The Chisana Caribou Herd, Elizabeth A. Lenart Aug 1997

Climate And Caribou: Effects Of Summer Weather On The Chisana Caribou Herd, Elizabeth A. Lenart

Biological Sciences

In 1989, the Chisana caribou (Rangifer tarandus) herd in the northern Wrangell Mountains, Alaska declined substantially in population size and productivity. Summers were significantly warmer and slightly drier during years the herd was declining (1989-1995) compared with years when the herd was stable or increasing (1981-1988). We increased air temperature and decreased precipitation with a plastic tent, decreased light intensity with a shade cloth, and increased precipitation by adding water to determine climatic effects on nutrient content and biomass of caribou forage during summer in 1994 and 1995 in the subarctic tundra. We determined that short-term variations in climate affected …

Walrus Feeding: A Re-Examination, Gay Glover Sheffield Aug 1997

Walrus Feeding: A Re-Examination, Gay Glover Sheffield

Biological Sciences

A new approach for analyzing walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) diet was examined. Controlled gastric digestion experiments determined the relative rates at which different kinds of food items became unidentifiable. The ability to identify prey items varied within and among prey types. The laboratory experiments provided a new basis for examining diet data by characterizing the condition of stomach samples based on the rates at which different prey types were digested. Stomach content data acquired during 1952-1991 from 798 Pacific walruses were compiled, and interpretations about feeding habits were re-examined. Walruses regularly consumed a wider assortment of benthic prey than was previously …

Concentration-Dependent Patterning Of The Xenopus Ectoderm By Bmp4 And Its Signal Transducer Smad1, Paul A. Wilson, Giorgio Lagna, Atsushi Suzuki, Ali Hemmati-Brivanlou Aug 1997

Concentration-Dependent Patterning Of The Xenopus Ectoderm By Bmp4 And Its Signal Transducer Smad1, Paul A. Wilson, Giorgio Lagna, Atsushi Suzuki, Ali Hemmati-Brivanlou

Biology

Morphogens are thought to establish pattern in early embryos by specifying several cell fates along a gradient of concentration; a well-studied example is the Drosophila protein decapentaplegic (DPP) acting in the wing disc. Recent work has established that bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4), the vertebrate homologue of DPP, controls the fundamental choice between neural and epidermal fates in the vertebrate ectoderm, under the control of antagonists secreted by the organizer region of the mesoderm. We now show that BMP4 can act as a morphogen, evoking distinct responses in Xenopus ecto-dermal cells at high and low concentrations, in a pattern consistent …

Age-Dependent Increase In Ortho-Tyrosine And Methionine Sulfoxide In Human Skin Collagen Is Not Accelerated In Diabetes: Evidence Against A Generalized Increase In Oxidative Stress In Diabetes, Mary C. Wells-Knecht, Timothy J. Lyons, David R. Mccance, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes Aug 1997

Baynes

Faculty Publications

The glycoxidation products Nepsilon-(carboxymethyl)lysine and pentosidine increase in skin collagen with age and at an accelerated rate in diabetes. Their age-adjusted concentrations in skin collagen are correlated with the severity of diabetic complications. To determine the relative roles of increased glycation and/or oxidation in the accelerated formation of glycoxidation products in diabetes, we measured levels of amino acid oxidation products, distinct from glycoxidative modifications of amino acids, as independent indicators of oxidative stress and damage to collagen in aging and diabetes. We show that ortho-tyrosine and methionine sulfoxide are formed in concert with Nepsilon-(carboxymethyl)lysine and pentosidine during glycoxidation of collagen …

Aerial Photography Techniques To Estimate Populations Of Laughing Gull Nests In Jamaica Bay, New York, 1992-1995, Richard A. Dolbeer, Jerrold L. Belant, Glen E. Bernhardt

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We evaluated aerial photography (full coverage, using fixed-wing aircraft) and aerial video (transects, using helicopter) surveys to estimate the population of Laughing Gull (Larus ahicilla) nests in Jamaica Bay, New York, during June 1992-1995. We counted 4,920 nests in the colony using aerial photography and estimated 5,367 nests using aerial video in 1992. In 1993-1995, we respectively counted 5,691,5,095, and 6,126 nests in the colony using aerial photography, and estimated from ground plots that our counts differed from the actual number of nests by means of -9% to 1%. Overall (1993-1995) correction factors (by which to multiply the aerial photography …

Ianr Program Support: Results From The Nebraska Rural Poll, John C. Allen, Amy M. Smith, Sam Cordes, Amber Hamilton, Matt Spilker

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

This working paper presents findings from the first annual Nebraska Rural Poll. The study is based on 1,971 responses from households in the 87 nonmetropolitan counties in the state. The objectives of this paper are to provide information on how rural Nebraskans perceive the importance of various programs funded by the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR). The survey questions about IANR programs were included as a separate one page insert that was included in the large Rural Poll survey booklet. Because the IANR questions were marked “optional,” one must be cautious in drawing definitive conclusions from the responses. …

(Snp068) Louis Graves Interviewed By Reed Engle, Transcribed By Joy K. Stiles, Louis W. Graves

Shenandoah National Park Oral History Collection

Records an interview with Louis Graves, who grew up in Madison County, Virginia, not far from the site where President Herbert Hoover would construct a rustic retreat known as Rapidan Camp, and later as Camp Hoover. Hoover paid for the project out of his own funds and the camp was constructed by a detachment of U.S. Marines as a military exercise by March, 1929. Louis Graves recalls speeches given by President Hoover and other dignitaries in Madison, Va., as part of a day-long Hoover Day celebration on August 9, 1929. Graves relates that more than 10,000 people attended the event, …

Exploring African American Identity In Harlem: Carl Van Vechten's Nigger Heaven, Michelle Lynn Simone Aug 1997

Exploring African American Identity In Harlem: Carl Van Vechten's Nigger Heaven, Michelle Lynn Simone

Theses & Honors Papers

Carl Van Vechten became a predominant figure within Harlem Renaissance literary circles because of his patronage of black artists and his 1926 novel Nigger Heaven. The novel depicts scenes of cabarets and Harlem night life, emphasizing themes of racial prejudice and the struggle for identity in the black culture. Van Vechten's fictional portrayal of Harlem received mixed reviews--to say the least. Many black authors and critics aligned themselves with W.E.B. Du Bois and lambasted the bawdy scenes and racially derogatory title. Others, including James Weldon Johnson and Langston Hughes, defended Van Vechten' s astute observations of Harlem and his skillful …
