Cell–matrix and cell–cell adhesion are recognized physiological determinants of cell growth and survival. In epithelial and endothelial cell systems, oncogenic transformation has in several cases been shown to confer resistance to apoptosis upon depriving cells of substrate adhesion. We examined the effects of oncogenic transformation in adherent versus adhesion- deprived primary embryonic fibroblasts. Whereas untransformed early passage fibroblasts undergo cell cycle arrest, their Myc/Ras- or E1A/Ras-transformed counterparts rapidly enter apoptosis when placed into suspension. This phenomenon also occurs upon incubation with a soluble, RGD-containing integrin ligand and is blocked by a peptide antagonist to ICE family proteases or by aggregation …

Dna Fingerprinting Reveals Low Genetic Diversity In Gunnison's Prairie Dog (Cynomys Gunnisoni), Steven E. Travis, C. N. Slobodchikoff, Paul Keim
Genetics Collection
The use of molecular techniques for the assessment of familial relationships among social species of mammals has become relatively commonplace. However, some species represent poor candidates for such studies due to naturally low levels of genetic diversity, leading to unacceptably large standard errors associated with estimates of relatedness. Here, we report on a preliminary study of genetic diversity within two populations of a social species of ground squirrel, Gunnison's prairie dog (Cynomys gunnisoni) using DNA fingerprinting. We observed low levels of diversity in the form of large mean coefficients of genetic similarity among individuals occupying the same population. …

Case Study Of Ethical Leadership And Abraham Lincoln, Jarrod Englebretson
Case Study Of Ethical Leadership And Abraham Lincoln, Jarrod Englebretson
Theses and Graduate Projects
This paper consists of a case study examining the question of Abraham Lincoln and ethical leadership. The definition used in the case study for ethical leadership was a combination of the research of two men, George Shapiro and Peter Kostenbaum. This definition for ethical leadership was then used while looking at certain events, speeches, and writings of Abraham Lincoln both before and during his presidency. The conclusion derived from this analysis is that Abraham Lincoln was an ethical leader and that his leadership should be used as an example of an ethical leader.

OIL AND GAS REVENUES. WATER AND LAND CONSERVATION FUND. STATE TAX CREDITS. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Creates state trust fund to finance land and water conservation programs, including purchase and improvement of parks, natural areas, wildlife habitats, watersheds for drinking water, and old growth redwood lands. Requires certain oil and gas related revenues received by the state be placed in trust fund. Specifies allocations for certain projects; allocates percentages of remaining funds to programs for education, parkland acquisition, neighborhood park safety, habitat improvement, recreational and conservation programs benefitting "at risk" youth. Authorizes tax credits to donors of qualifying property or water rights. …

Identification Of A Gal/Galnac Lectin In The Protozoan Hartmannella Vermiformis As A Potential Receptor For Attachment And Invasion By The Legionnaires' Disease Bacterium, Chandrasekar Venkataraman, Bradley J. Haack, Subbarao Bondada, Yousef Abu Kwaik
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
The Legionnaire's disease bacterium, Legionella pneumophila, is a facultative intracellular pathogen which invades and replicates within two evolutionarily distant hosts, free-living protozoa and mammalian cells. Invasion and intracellular replication within protozoa are thought to be major factors in the transmission of Legionnaire's disease. Although attachment and invasion of human macrophages by L. pneumophila is mediated in part by the complement receptors CR1 and CR3, the protozoan receptor involved in bacterial attachment and invasion has not been identified. To define the molecular events involved in invasion of protozoa by L. pneumophila, we examined the role of protein tyrosine phosphorylation …

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Control Of Hemopoietic Stem Cell Numbers: Mapping Of A Stem Cell Gene, Gerald De Haan, Gary Van Zant
Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications
We evaluated in vivo interactions between extrinsic (growth factor induced) and intrinsic (genetically determined) effectors of mouse primitive hemopoietic stem cell proliferation and numbers. Accordingly, stem cell frequency and cell cycle kinetics were assessed in eight strains of inbred mice using the cobblestone area–forming cell (CAFC) assay. A strong inverse correlation was observed between mouse lifespan and the number of autonomously cycling progenitors (CAFC day 7) in the femur. The population size of primitive stem cells (CAFC day 35) varied widely (up to sevenfold) among strains, unlike total CAFC day 7 numbers (cycling and quiescent), which were similar. Administration of …

Successional Changes In The Hydrology, Water Quality, Primary Production, And Growth Of Juvenile Arctic Grayling Of Blocked Tanana River Sloughs, Alaska, Klaus G. Wuttig
Fisheries
A comparative stream study was conducted to assess the influence of development and blockage on the hydrology, water quality, primary production, and Arctic grayling of Badger Slough, Alaska. Data collected showed that Badger Slough exhibited stable, clear flows throughout the summer, and higher total and total dissolved phosphorus, orthophosphate, alkalinity, pH, conductivity, and average temperatures, and lower winter dissolved oxygen concentrations than both Piledriver and 23-Mile Sloughs. Mean algal biomass (3.3 mg m-3) and primary production (6.9 g O2 m-2 d-1) are greater than that recorded for any other interior Alaska streams and percent fines in riffle substrates have increased. …
