WATER AND LAND CONSERVATION FUND. OIL AND GAS REVENUES. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Creates state trust fund to finance land and water conservation programs, including purchase and improvement of parks, natural areas, wildlife habitats, watersheds for drinking water, and old growth redwood lands. Requires certain oil and gas related revenues received by the state be placed in trust fund. Specifies allocations for certain projects; allocates percentages of remaining funds to programs for education, parkland acquisition, neighborhood park safety, wildlife protection enforcement, habitat improvement, recreational and conservation programs benefitting "at risk" youth. Establishes land acquisition procedures for departments, local agencies, and nonprofit entities. …

Nitric oxide (NO) is an important mediator of the inflammatory response. MRL-Ipr/lpr mice overexpress inducible nitric oxide synthase (NOS2) and overproduce NO in parallel with the development of an autoimmune syndrome with a variety of inflammatory manifestations. In previous studies, we showed that inhibiting NO production with the nonselective nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor NG -monomethyl-arginine reduced glomerulonephritis, arthritis, and vasculitis in MRL-lpr/lpr mice. To define further the role of NO and NOS2 in disease in MRL-Ipr/lpr mice, mice with targeted disruption of NOS2 were produced by homologous recombination and bred to MRL-lpr/lpr mice to the N4 generation. MRL-lpr/Ipr littermates …

Experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis (EAMG) is an animal model of human myasthenia gravis (MG). In mice, EAMG is induced by immunization with Torpedo californica acetylcholine receptor (AChR) in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). However, the role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of EAMG is not clear. Because EAMG is an antibody-mediated disease, it is of the prevailing notion that Th2 but not Th1 cytokines play a role in the pathogenesis of this disease. To test the hypothesis that the Th1 cytokine, interferon (IFN)-gamma, plays a role in the development of EAMG, we immunized IFN-gamma knockout (IFN-gko) (-/-) mice and wild-type (WT) …

The glycoxidation products Nε-(carboxymethyl)lysine and pentosidine increase in skin collagen with age and at an accelerated rate in diabetes. Their age-adjusted concentrations in skin collagen are correlated with the severity of diabetic complications. To determine the relative roles of increased glycation and/or oxidation in the accelerated formation of glycoxidation products in diabetes, we measured levels of amino acid oxidation products, distinct from glycoxidative modifications of amino acids, as independent indicators of oxidative stress and damage to collagen in aging and diabetes. We show that ortho-tyrosine and methionine sulfoxide are formed in concert with Nε-(carboxymethyl)lysine and pentosidine during glycoxidation of collagen …
Liberty, Rights, And Will In Hobbes: A Response To David Van Mill, John D. Harman
Liberty, Rights, And Will In Hobbes: A Response To David Van Mill, John D. Harman
Political Science Faculty/Staff Publications
David Van Mill recently argued in this journal that Hobbes's theory of freedom in Leviathan is fundamentally confused. Van Mill finds that this confusion arises from the supposed inconsistency between Hobbes's initial account of liberty as “the absence of external impediments” in Chapter 14 and subsequent uses of the term in contexts where he must necessarily have held a different concept. (This occurs most notably in Chapter 21, where he discusses the “liberty of subjects.”) According to Van Mill, the consequence of this confusion is nothing less than the disintegration of Hobbes's whole system. Against this account, I argue that …

Marine Farm Planning And Consultation Processes In Western Australia, Dave Everall
Marine Farm Planning And Consultation Processes In Western Australia, Dave Everall
Fisheries Management Papers
The development of a sustainable aquaculture industry in Western Australia is considered to be a high priority by the Government. The marine farming industry has a bright future in Western Australia, but there is a need to balance its developing needs for suitable waters with those of existing activities, and with community expectations for accountability and transparency in the resolution of equity and resource sharing decisions. The purpose of this report is to review the existing planning and consultation processes for pearling and aquaculture in WA and recommend how they may be improved and incorporated into a single process. It …

Review Of The Scepter And The Star: The Messiahs Of The Dead Sea Scrolls And Other Ancient Literature, Ed. John J. Collins, Sidnie White Crawford
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
The popularity of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the controversy surrounding their publication have led to the appearance of a spate of books on the Qumran scrolls in recent years. With so many books on the shelves, it is difficult for the reader to differentiate the good from the bad, the wheat from the chaff. Among the books recently published concerning the scrolls, John Collins's book The Scepter and the Star represents a nugget of pure gold.
The Relationship Between Meaning In Life And The Occurrence Of Drug Abuse: An Epidemiological Retrospective Study, Ben Howard
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Humans have been using plant-derived drugs for as long as we have recorded history. Significant negative consequences related to drug abuse have occurred in the areas of health, social issues, family relations, legal systems, and economic productivity. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between meaning in life and drug abuse. An epidemiological, retrospective study was performed to compare personal meaning in life between individuals receiving inpatient treatment for drug abuse and a group of non-drug abusing controls. Study participants completed the Purpose-In-Life Test and Life Attitude Profile-Revised. On both instruments, the inpatient drug abusing subjects were …

The Beneficial Effect Of Vitamin E And Selenium During Experimental Chagas' Disease, Yue Hou
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The present study was conducted to determine if vitamin E and selenium could have a positive synergistic effect during experimental Chagas' disease. In the first phase of the study, 25 female C3HeB/FeJ mice were infected with a Brazil strain of Trypanosoma cruzi while receiving vitamin E supplementation of 0 IU/kg, 200 IU/kg, 400 IU/kg, 600 IU/kg, 800 IU/kg in their diets. In the second phase, 20 female C3HeB/FeJ mice were infected while receiving 400 IU/kg vitamin E plus selenium supplementation of 2 ppm, 4 ppm, 8 ppm, 16 ppm in their drinking water. The results demonstrate that vitamin E does …

Partly Fragmented, Partly Integrated: An Anthropological Examination Of "Postmodern Fragmented Subjects", Claudia Strauss
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
It has become commonplace for anthropologists, historians, and other researchers to discuss the cultural and historical construction of "selves." One now-classic description of this sort is the historian E. P. Thompson's account (1963, 1967) of the way industrial capitalism created a greater time consciousness among English factory workers. More recently, the literary critic Frederic Jameson has written about the psychological effects of late-20th-century capitalism. Using as his evidence works of architecture, poetry, music, and other artistic and intellectual productions, he has argued that (at least in the United States, the focus of his description) the standardization of our environment, saturation …

Manure Distribution Field Day
Haskell Agricultural Laboratory (Northeast Research and Extension Center)
As the livestock industry in the midwest undergoes rapid change, issues associated with the storage and land application of the manure have increasingly become a focus of public concern. Both USDA and Land Grant Universities have increased their efforts in addressing the concerns raised in recent years.
The Manure Distribution Field Day on August 28, will highlight many of the research efforts currently underway at the University of Nebraska, Iowa State University, and South Dakota State University. Manure storage systems, land application equipment, and odor control associated with livestock systems will be highlighted. You will be able to view displays …
