An Actin-Related Protein In Drosophila Colocalizes With Heterochromatin Protein 1 In Pericentric Heterochromatin, S Frankel, E Sigel, C Craig, Sarah C.R. Elgin, M Mooseker, S Artavanis-Tsakonas Sep 1997

An Actin-Related Protein In Drosophila Colocalizes With Heterochromatin Protein 1 In Pericentric Heterochromatin, S Frankel, E Sigel, C Craig, Sarah C.R. Elgin, M Mooseker, S Artavanis-Tsakonas

Biology Faculty Research

The actin-related proteins have been identified by virtue of their sequence similarity to actin. While their structures are thought to be closely homologous to actin, they exhibit a far greater range of functional diversity. We have localized the Drosophila actin-related protein, Arp4, to the nucleus. It is most abundant during embryogenesis but is expressed at all developmental stages. Within the nucleus Arp4 is primarily localized to the centric heterochromatin. Polytene chromosome spreads indicate it is also present at much lower levels in numerous euchromatic bands. The only other protein in Drosophila reported to be primarily localized to centric heterochromatin in …

The Future Of The Third Sector, Roger A. Lohmann Sep 1997

The Future Of The Third Sector, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The U.S. "nonprofit sector" and other forms of contemporary national third sectors which are currently spreading around the world arose in a unique historical moment and for distinct historical reasons and are unlikely to outlast that moment in history. Voluntary action on the other hand has deep roots reaching far back in human history and is likely to be around far into the future.

Developing Division: A Computer Animation Thesis Report, George M. Nadeau Sep 1997

Developing Division: A Computer Animation Thesis Report, George M. Nadeau

Theses

This paper offers a review of the production of my thesis animation Division. In it I will describe the challenges I faced and the approaches I used to resolve them. The process was organic and all the development decisions were repeatedly studied and questioned. Consequently, this paper does not attempt to be a chronological record. Rather, the sections are intended only to organize the process into six main areas of development. The first section will focus on the development of the story, including the definition of the mood and setting. The second section will focus on the development of the …

Curses, Oaths, Ordeals And Tials Of Animals, Alan Watson Sep 1997

Curses, Oaths, Ordeals And Tials Of Animals, Alan Watson

Scholarly Works

To the outsider, a foreign legal system may at times appear irrational, with a belief in the efficacy, usually with supernatural assistance, of curses, oaths and ordeals, and that animals may properly be punished, even restrained from anti-human behaviour, after a criminal trial. But caution must be exercised. There may be little real belief that the deity will intervene-for instance, that the ordeal will reveal guilt or innocence. Rather, the society may be faced with an intolerable problem, with no reasonable solution, and the participants may resort to extraordinary legal measures as a "Last Best Chance", or "The Second Best". …

Drugs Effect, Daisy Fang Sep 1997

Drugs Effect, Daisy Fang

Theses

This thesis project is a 3 minutes 30 seconds computer generated animation that includes 2D graphics design, 2D animation, 3D modeling and animation. In addition, an optional interactive multimedia project serves as the introduction to this animation. I chose this subject because I think computer graphics is a tool that enables the impossible to become possible. The illusory effects of drug abuse by the user can be portrayed by means of computer graphics. The main focus of this thesis project is to try to make my audience (youth) understand that drugs abuse is the point of no return. One becomes …

"Be Prepared." The Importance Of Crisis Planning In The Schools., Jill Elizabeth Pratt Aug 1997

"Be Prepared." The Importance Of Crisis Planning In The Schools., Jill Elizabeth Pratt

Theses

More often there are events occurring in society that leave children in a crisis state which affects them both emotionally and intellectually. School staff are prominent figures in the lives of children, and must be both prepared and knowledgeable in order to help during times of crisis. School Psychologists, in particular, are specifically trained in counseling and consultation necessary for effective crisis intervention. School Psychologists must be the leaders in creating and implementing crisis intervention plans in the schools. The following project contains a literature review of crisis intervention, and a detailed crisis intervention plan for a small, rural district …

A Stable Isotope Study Of Organic Cycling And The Ecology Of An Anchialine Cave Ecosystem, John W. Pohlman, Thomas M. Iliffe, Luis A. Cifuentes Aug 1997

A Stable Isotope Study Of Organic Cycling And The Ecology Of An Anchialine Cave Ecosystem, John W. Pohlman, Thomas M. Iliffe, Luis A. Cifuentes

KIP Articles

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data, complemented with other geochemical parame ters, were used to identify the sources of organic matter that support the food web of an anchialine cave ecosystem in the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Anchialine caves, common along tropical karstic and volcanic coastlines, are completely or partially inundated by highly stratified layers of fresh and marine waters. Stable isotope data from the cave fauna, the particulate organic matter (POM) from the cenote pool and from the cave, the forest soil and the cave sediments indicated that at least 3 sources of nutritive organics could support the anchialine …
