Identification Of Mycobacterium Paratuberculosis Gene Expression Signals, John P. Bannantine, Raul G. Barletta, Charles O. Thoen, Robert E. Andrews Jr. Oct 1997

Identification Of Mycobacterium Paratuberculosis Gene Expression Signals, John P. Bannantine, Raul G. Barletta, Charles O. Thoen, Robert E. Andrews Jr.

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Mycobacterium paratuberculosis promoter-containing clones were isolated from a genomic DNA library constructed in the transcriptional-translational fusion vector pYUB76. The promoter-containing DNA fragments were identified in the surrogate host Mycobacterium smegmatis by expression of the promoterless lacZ reporter gene of pYUB76. The expression signals exhibited a wide range of strengths, as indicated by their corresponding β-galactosidase activities. Eight clones were sequenced and characterized further. Predicted open reading frames and codon usage were identified by computer analysis. Database searching for related sequences using the BLAST method revealed no homologies. Transcriptional activity was measured by slot-blot hybridization with steady-state RNA isolated from lacZ …

Inclusion: An Overview Of Working Models, Robertta Ruth Devries Oct 1997

Inclusion: An Overview Of Working Models, Robertta Ruth Devries

Masters Theses

Increasingly, students with disabilities are being placed in general education classroom; defined as inclusion, to be educated with students without disabilities. Proponents such as parents, professionals, economists, researchers, and the general public are recommending a change in the continuum of services and a move toward a more integrated setting. Supporters proclaim: (a) special education is discriminating because it segregates students, (b) combining special education with general education will decrease the ever expanding budget, and (c) the American educational system is lacking and a “higher quality” education is essential. But, current research is not proving inclusion is a positive move forward …

An Examination Of Students' Beliefs About Intelligence And Self-Talk Patterns, Mary Musto Oct 1997

An Examination Of Students' Beliefs About Intelligence And Self-Talk Patterns, Mary Musto

Masters Theses

The relationship between students’ beliefs about intelligence and the type of self-talk used was examined among two students with learning disabilities who were identified as having a helplessness profile. Both students viewed intelligence as a static entity and demonstrated a lack of will to learn. Additionally, these students practiced the most negative type of self-talk about their ability when undertaking difficult learning tasks. The students were taught about theories of intelligence and the effects of negative self-talk on their classroom behavior. The results indicated that teaching students about the incremental view of intelligence and the self-talk model may enhance their …

Barring Foul Blows: An Argument For A Per Se Reversible-Error Rule For Prosecutors' Use Of Religious Arguments In The Sentencing Phase Of Capital Cases, Brian C. Duffy Oct 1997

Barring Foul Blows: An Argument For A Per Se Reversible-Error Rule For Prosecutors' Use Of Religious Arguments In The Sentencing Phase Of Capital Cases, Brian C. Duffy

Vanderbilt Law Review

Ninety-five percent of Americans profess belief in God, and seventy percent are members of a church or synagogue. Consequently, religious arguments, such as the prosecutor's invocation of Romans 13:1-7 from the Bible as excerpted above, will likely resonate with a jury consisting of "a fair cross-section" of a defendant's community and have a substantial impact on the decision-making process of its members. The impact of religious arguments is especially strong in the sentencing phase of capital cases when jurors must weigh a myriad of factors to determine whether a particular individual's life should end.

Notwithstanding the great risk, indeed likelihood, …

The Charism Of Charity In East Asian Culture: Reinterpretation Of The Spirit Of Simplicity, Humility, And Charity, Sung-Hae Kim S.C. Oct 1997

The Charism Of Charity In East Asian Culture: Reinterpretation Of The Spirit Of Simplicity, Humility, And Charity, Sung-Hae Kim S.C.

Vincentian Studies

Sung-Hae Kim conducted a survey among Korean Sisters of Charity to discover their understanding of the charism of charity and whether they thought there was a cultural gap between it and East Asian culture. A large percentage of the younger ones felt there was a gap, and in general the understanding of the charism was abstract. Kim discusses the virtues of simplicity, humility and charity found in Vincent de Paul’s conferences. She also describes how these virtues were perceived and lived out by Elizabeth Seton. The article concludes with an exploration of the Taoist counterparts to the Vincentian virtues. These …

Decision Making In The Life Of Elizabeth Ann Seton, Elizabeth Vermaelen S.C. Oct 1997

Decision Making In The Life Of Elizabeth Ann Seton, Elizabeth Vermaelen S.C.

Vincentian Studies

Discernment involves finding the ways in which God speaks to us. God spoke to Elizabeth Seton in nature, daily events, and prayer. She constantly sought God’s will and discovered it using what we now delineate as male and female ways of knowing. This article pays particular attention to her discernment as she made the decision to become Catholic. It also offers guidelines for individual and group discernment.

Decision Making Then And Now, Maryanna Coyle S.C. Oct 1997

Decision Making Then And Now, Maryanna Coyle S.C.

Vincentian Studies

This article does not address specific decisions and methods of decision making in Elizabeth Seton’s life and in the life of the community she founded. Rather, it identifies five qualities of Elizabeth’s formation and shows how they influenced her life and thought. These qualities are “a contemplative spirit, a discerning heart, a compassionate presence, faithful service, and a courageous vision.” Elizabeth was contemplative from an early age, which strengthened her and helped her sense God’s presence and love. She “totally entrusted herself to God” and incorporated prayer and counsel into her discernment, using them to counter or at least interpret …

Pesticide Use On Utah's Small Grain Crops, Howard Deer, Alan H. Roe

All Current Publications

Data from usable pesticide survey responses was entered in a computer database and checked for entry errors. A database record was stored for each unique combination of grower, crop, pesticide, and target pest(s). All character data (such as brand names) were standardized for consistent usage and spelling. Specific methods used to enter and standardize data and to perform calculations are described below:
