Using The Spot-Mapping Censusing Technique To Assess Changes In Breeding Bird Communities At Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Alamo, Texas, 1940-1996, Alberto Cantu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Results of breeding-bird censuses done by Davis in 1940 and by Gehlbach between 1973-1978 at Santa Ana National Wildlife, Alamo Texas, were compared to a 1995-1996 bird survey done in Gehlbach's study area. According to the Wilcoxon rank-sum test, bird densities in 1940 and 1995-1996 were similar, while 1973-1978 densities were lower. The 1995-1996 bird community was 76% similar to both the earlier studies. However, the communities studied in 1940 and 1973-1978 had only a 60% similarity. Negligible differences in bird densities and species composition were found between the 1995 and 1996 communities. Differences are attributed to changes in vegetation …

Learning From News Stories About Risk, Kurt Neuwirth, Sharon Dunwoody, Robert J. Griffin

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

The present study contrasts experimental subjects’ reactions to and knowledge held as a result of exposure to news stories about hazards in the environment. Subjects (n=246) viewed six news stories created especially for the experiment. Three stories were of general interest to students (on effective time use, apartment hunting tips and a possible change in academic standards) and three stories were about hazards (a parasite in the campus water supply, an illness caused by chemically treated library books, and fluorescent lighting affecting grades). Results indicate that rates of learning about the characteristics of a hazard occurred at high levels when …

Spectral Content And Dispersion Of Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering, S. F. Hubbard, Rolfe G. Petschek, Kenneth D. Singer Nov 1996

Spectral Content And Dispersion Of Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering, S. F. Hubbard, Rolfe G. Petschek, Kenneth D. Singer

Faculty Scholarship

We have used a high-intensity tunable picosecond infrared laser source to measure the spectral content of light scattered near the second harmonic for two well-known organic dyes, p-Nitroaniline and Disperse Red 1, at a number of wavelengths in the near infrared. We found that in Disperse red 1 a broad two-photon fluorescence competes with the sharp hyper-Rayleigh peak. Further, dephasing of the virtual excited state leads to elimination of hyper-Rayleigh scattering in favor of fluorescence if the harmonic is in the linear absorption tail. We determined the dispersion of the magnitude of the first hyperpolarizability for both dyes, using a …

Pfmrk, A Mo15‐Related Protein Kinase From Plasmodium Falciparum, J Li, Kjh Robson, J Chen, Gat Targett, Da Baker

School of Biomedical Sciences

Cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks) play a central role in the regulation of the eukaryotic cell cycle. A novel gene encoding a Cdk-like protein, Pfmrk, has been isolated from the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. The gene has no introns and comprises an open reading frame encoding a protein of 324 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 38 kDa. Database searches revealed a striking similarity to the Cdk subfamily with the highest similarity to human MO15 (Cdk7). The overall sequence of Pfmrk shares 62% similarity and 46% identity with human MO15, in comparison to the 49–58% similarity and 34–43% identity …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Poly(Ester-Imide)S, Jinseo Ahn Nov 1996

Synthesis And Characterization Of Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Poly(Ester-Imide)S, Jinseo Ahn

Theses

A series of novel poly(ester-imide)s were prepared by the reactions of 6,6'-(3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic diimido)-bis-hexanoic acid with various aliphatic diols containing four to ten methylene groups using a melt polymerization technique. Besides these, a novel poly(esterimide) was synthesized by the reaction of 1 1 , 1 1 '-(3,3', 4,4'- benzophenonetetracarboxylic diimido)-bis-undecanoic acid with 1 ,6-hexanediol employing the same technique. Two kinds of monomers containing diimide diacids were prepared by the reactions of 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride with respective 6-aminocaproic acid and 1 1 -aminoundecanoic acid. A total of eight poly(ester-imide)s, PEIMs, were characterized for liquid crystalline properties. The solubility, viscosity, infrared spectroscopy, thermal analyses …

"Complete" Accrual Taxation, Fred B. Brown Nov 1996

"Complete" Accrual Taxation, Fred B. Brown

San Diego Law Review

This Article considers and analyzes "complete" accrual taxation, the inclusion in the tax base of annual increases and decreases in the value of property, regardless of disposition. This system does away with the rule that income must be realized in order to be taxed. The Article outlines the complete tax accrual system and engages in a rigorous examination of the benefits resulting from such a system. It compares the consequences of such a system to the consequences of adopting other alternatives to the realization rule. It explores a computerized valuation system for nonmarketed business interests, and deals with legitimate privacy …

From Income To Consumption Tax: Some International Implications, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Nov 1996

From Income To Consumption Tax: Some International Implications, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

San Diego Law Review

This Article considers some possible implications for the international tax regime based on three major proposals in the United States which would abolish the U.S. corporate and personal income taxes and implement in their place a type of consumption tax. It describes the three main proposals and the potential international implications. The Article discusses the possible impact of tax reform on the U.S. tax treaty network and concludes that our treaty partners would be entitled to terminate their treaties with the U.S. if it abolished the income tax. The author concludes by addressing the question whether the effect of the …

The Distributional Effects Of Fundamental Tax Revisions, Jane G. Gravelle Nov 1996

The Distributional Effects Of Fundamental Tax Revisions, Jane G. Gravelle

San Diego Law Review

This Article addresses the distributional effects of new tax proposals, such as the flat tax and the USA tax. It explains how these proposals relate to each other, and then explores the combination of rate-flattening, base-broadening, and corporate tax integration contained in the flat tax proposal. The Article then proceeds to look at the consequences of the shift to a consumption base. The author concludes with adjustment costs, behavioral responses, and transition relief.

Tax Reform And Corporate Acquisitions, Peter L. Faber Nov 1996

Tax Reform And Corporate Acquisitions, Peter L. Faber

San Diego Law Review

This Article focuses on two tax reform proposals: the Nunn-Domenici bill (USA Tax) and the Armey flat tax. It explores the effect of these two types of tax reform proposals on purchases and sales of corporate businesses. The Article addresses the purchase and sale of only incorporated businesses, and explores the way that the proposed tax systems would operate when applied to these corporate transactions. The author concludes that if these tax proposals became law, it is likely that a large part of tax planning for corporate acquisitions would shift from the federal to the state and local level.

Federal Tax Restructuring And State And Local Governments: An Introduction To The Issues And The Literature, Michael Mazerov, Dan R. Bucks, Mulitstate Tax Commission

San Diego Law Review

This short Article briefly outlines some of the issues inherent in substituting a comprehensive consumption tax for the existing federal personal and corporate income taxes. It addresses the effects of federal tax restructuring on state and local governments based on state reliance on the federal income tax infrastructure, as well as outlining other major issues for states and localities. The authors recommend that Congress consider the impact of tax reform on state and local governments as among the two or three most important issues it must study as it explores restructuring the federal tax system.

The Plethora Of Consumption Tax Proposals: Putting The Value Added Tax, Flat Tax, Retail Sales Tax, And Usa Tax Into Perspective, Alan Schenk Nov 1996

The Plethora Of Consumption Tax Proposals: Putting The Value Added Tax, Flat Tax, Retail Sales Tax, And Usa Tax Into Perspective, Alan Schenk

San Diego Law Review

This Article explores consumption tax proposals as a possible alternative to the current income tax system in the United States. It discusses the reasons for an interest in a federal consumption tax, as well as providing a brief history of consumption taxes. The Article examines the various forms of tax systems used in highly industrialized nations and explains how the United States federal income tax system fits into this array. Some significant elements of consumption taxes, such as tax base, the identification of the taxpayer, and the method of calculating tax liability, are explored. The author concludes with an analysis …

Untangling Tax Reforms: Simple Taxes, Complex Choices, Alice G. Abreu Nov 1996

Untangling Tax Reforms: Simple Taxes, Complex Choices, Alice G. Abreu

San Diego Law Review

This Article applies concepts of empowerment to two tax reform proposals: The Freedom and Fairness Restoration Act of 1995 (Armey Flat Tax) and the USA Tax Act of 1995 (Nunn-Domenici Tax). The concepts of "avoidance power," the power to avoid the imposition of taxes, and "burden power," the power to shift the economic burden that taxes impose, are both analyzed in the context of these tax proposals. The author considers the degree of avoidance and burden power conferred by each proposal, and concludes with some observations regarding the values implicated by the distribution of power each proposal would produce.

Reevaluating The California Sales Tax: Exemptions, Equity, Effectiveness, And The Need For A Broader Base, Robert H. Gleason Nov 1996

Reevaluating The California Sales Tax: Exemptions, Equity, Effectiveness, And The Need For A Broader Base, Robert H. Gleason

San Diego Law Review

This Comment examines the tax base and administrative aspects of the sales tax in California and argues the need for reform. It analyzes the State's sales tax system against its original goals and attempts to measure the tax system's success. The analysis points to the proliferation of exclusions and exemptions that reduce the efficacy and equity of the tax system and clearly demonstrates a need to expand the tax base if the system is to remain true to its original goals and remain a strong source of revenue for the state. The Comment also discuss alternative taxation schemes, focusing both …

Investigation Of Fundamental Emi Source Mechanisms Driving Common-Mode Radiation From Printed Circuit Boards With Attached Cables, David M. Hockanson, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Fei Sha, Michael J. Wilhelm

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Fundamental EMI source mechanisms leading to common-mode radiation from printed circuit boards with attached cables are presented in this paper. Two primary EMI source mechanisms have been identified: one associated with a differential-mode voltage and another associated with a differential-mode current, both of which result in a common-mode current on an attached cable. These mechanisms can be used to relate printed circuit layout geometries to EMI sources. The two mechanisms are demonstrated through numerical and experimental results, and an example from a production printed-circuit design is presented.

Cycle Symmetry And Its Causes, Cisco Group (Virgilian And Wolfcampian), Texas, Wan Yang Nov 1996

Cycle Symmetry And Its Causes, Cisco Group (Virgilian And Wolfcampian), Texas, Wan Yang

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

181 transgressive-regressive cycles composed of nonmarine and marine carbonate and siliciclastic rocks of the Cisco Group on the Eastern Shelf, Texas, display complex characteristics at both hemicycle and full-cycle scales. They are delineated on the basis of successive changes of depositional environments, stratal boundary relations, and stratigraphic position. Transgressive and regressive stratigraphic environment gradients are defined as the magnitude of environmental shift divided by thickness for each hemicycle. They indicate the rates of lateral environmental shifts during transgression and regression. Cycle symmetry index is defined as the ratio between transgressive and regressive stratigraphic environment gradients. It provides a measure of …

“Like Master, Like Man”: Constructing Whiteness In The Commercial Law Of Slavery, 1800-1861, Ariela J. Gross Nov 1996

“Like Master, Like Man”: Constructing Whiteness In The Commercial Law Of Slavery, 1800-1861, Ariela J. Gross

Cardozo Law Review

In 1836, Leonard Wideman bought a slave named Charles from Jonathan Johnson, paying in part with a $100 note. Not long after, Johnson sued Wideman in the Circuit Court of Abbeville, South Carolina for failing to pay his note. In defense, Wideman argued that he should not have to pay Charles's price because Johnson had fraudulently represented Charles to be sober, honest, and humble, when, in fact, he was insubordinate, vicious, a drunkard, and a runaway. The trial turned not only on Charles's character, but also on the character of his masters: Johnson, Wideman, and others who had previously owned …

Property, Parenthood, And Peonage: Reflections On The Return To Status Quo Antebellum, Margaret A. Burnham Nov 1996

Property, Parenthood, And Peonage: Reflections On The Return To Status Quo Antebellum, Margaret A. Burnham

Cardozo Law Review

Cheryl Harris demonstrates how intertwining racial and gender boundaries, whose shadows are long, longstanding, and ominous, were initially constructed around the legal principle of human chattel as personal property. She insightfully argues that slavery inextricably linked the concepts of race and property in the American legal imagination; that property originates from rules that are "racially coded" and determined. Cheryl Harris's contribution to this Symposium is a continuation of her project of illuminating how law ratifies and implements a racialized conception of property. This comment considers the application of Professor Harris's argument, that property, in the context of race-based slavery, is …

“Under The Present Mode Of Trial, Improper Verdicts Are Very Often Given”: Criminal Procedure In The Trials Of Slaves In Antebellum Louisiana, Judith Kelleher Schafer

Cardozo Law Review

When Louisiana became an American possession in 1803, a primary concern of the new territorial government and its inhabitants was what kind of law would be most appropriate to provide stability and maintain order in a heterogeneous population composed of free persons of French, Spanish, and American ancestry, those of African origin, free and slave, American Indians, and various combinations of these cultures and races.
