A number of theories have been developed that attempt to explain the role of bank loans and public debt in corporate financing. Research suggests that banks may have a comparative advantage in performing at least two valuable functions, information gathering and monitoring. Community structure and relative habitat preferences of intertidal fishes from the eastern Canary Islands of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote were examined in a study of 354 tidepools at 33 localities. Habitat use and behavior of the most abundant fish Mauligobius maderensis were examined on Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. Of the 27 species encountered, 11 were common to each of the islands. The most abundant species were: M. maderensis, Parablennius parvicornis, Gobius paganellus, Coryphoblennius galerita, and Chelon labrosus. In a Two-way indicator species analysis Fuerteventura and Lanzarote localities clustered together. The same analysis differentiated between species that inhabited the upper …

Historical route geographers consider the factors that influenced past roadbuilding, and the changes that result from roadbuilding. The earliest Spanish colonial officials in Central America initiated roadbuilding projects that were sensitive to physical and cultural factors. Officials had to consider the region's aboriginal routes, Spain's trade flows, the isthmus' topography, and the region's population distribution. The roads the Spaniards opened four centuries ago guided early settlement. In some cases, these early roads persist in the region's route network. During the 16th-century Spaniards sought to establish transisthmian roadways that would link Spain's Atlantic and Pacific maritime networks. Partial fluvial routes across …

The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of two levels of instructional treatment on sixth graders' ability to solve mathematical story problems. The two levels of instructional treatment were instruction in the use of graphic organizers in conjunction with specific analytic reading skills and instruction in specific analytic reading instruction alone. These were compared to the absence of either treatment. The steady decline in students' scores on measures of ability to read and solve story problems over the past decade prompted research in three sixth-grade public school classes in northeast Louisiana. I studied the nesting ecology of the White-faced Ibis (Plegadis chihi) during the summers of 1994 and 1995 in three colonies in Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge, southwestern Louisiana. Data were collected on colony-site characteristics, chronology (with abundance) of colony formation, reproductive success, and growth and development of ibis nestlings. Small colonies nested in dense buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) and water willow (Decodon verticillatus) "islands." The largest colony nested in black willows (Salix nigra) (3.2 ha)--a habitat unique to ibis populations in Louisiana--with nests heights up to 7.5 m. Cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) (62%) and ibises (36%) were the most abundant species. …

In Rhodobacter capsulatus, a purple nonsulfur bacterium, the tetrapyrrole pathway yields four end products: siroheme, vitamin B12, heme and bacteriochlorophyll. Growth of R. capsulatus under low oxygen tension increases carbon flow through the tetrapyrrole pathway up to 100 fold. The mechanism(s) for this regulation is currently unknown. One regulatory mechanism could be transcriptional control of one or more of the genes in the common portion of the tetrapyrrole pathway. The fifth gene in the pathway, hemE, has been cloned by complementation of an Escherichia coli hemE::miniTn10 mutant. Sequence data of hemE revealed the presence of an upstream palindrome that is …

Photobacterium damsela subsp. piscicida, formerly Pasteurella piscicida, is an important new pathogen of hybrid striped bass cultured in brackish water on Louisiana mariculture farms. Louisiana isolates compared with strains of P. damsela subsp. piscicida from Greece, Japan, Israel and Chesapeake Bay, USA and were found to be identical in biochemical phenotype and enzymic activity. Small plasmids of 8 and 5 kb were unique to Louisiana strains. Sequential daily bacteriology and histopathology on hybrid striped bass experimentally infected by immersion revealed that following high doses (13,000 CFU/ml) the gills and spleen are colonized first as early as 24 hours PI, followed …

This study examined the relationship of individual student achievement with four variables--school social climate, race, gender, and socioeconomic status. Each of these variables was expected to be significantly related to student achievement. Student achievement was measured by the LEAP sores (averages of mathematics, language arts, and writing components of the test). School social climate was measured by the Brookover (1969) school social climate questionnaire. Researchers have searched for years for an explanation of the differences in student achievement levels. King, and updated numerous times, The Sacred Harp books in the "Denson" tradition, including The Sacred Harp: 1991 Edition, are today the most popular and widely used twentieth-century revisions of any nineteenth-century tunebook. This study analyzes the personal narrative of Mary Rhyne, an elderly African American domestic worker. The study describes the ethnographic process of collecting, transcribing and interpreting the informant's oral history. Interpretive and theoretical perspectives concerned with African American culture, domestic labor, and feminist practice are used to analyze the narrative. Further, the ethnographic process, the informant's oral "telling," and the events that she recalls and recounts are viewed as, and in terms of, performance. Performance foregrounds the collaborative and "fictional" aspects of the ethnographer-informant relationship. The primary goal of this dissertation is to investigate the structural and mechanical properties and dynamical fracture in SiSe$\sb2$ nanowires using the molecular-dynamics (MD) simulation technique. The present work is the first study of SiSe$\sb2$ nanowires. Large-scale simulations reported in this thesis are carried out with parallel multiresolution schemes for the long-range Coulomb and the three-body covalent potentials. The multiresolution scheme reduces the computational complexity from O(N$\sp2$) to O(N). Using an effective interatomic potential containing both 2- and 3-body interactions, MD simulations are performed for SiSe$\sb2$ nanowires composed of finite (1-64) number of chains. Cytokines play an important role in regulation of T cell responses. Two T helper cell subsets have been identified in some species and are defined by their cytokine secretion profiles. Th1 cells produce IL-2 and IFN-$\gamma,$ whereas Th2 cells express IL-4, IL-5, and IL-10. Precursor T cells that express a mixture of these cytokines are considered Th0 cells. It is hypothesized that primary infections of Brugia pahangi in gerbils induce an initial Th0 or Th1 like response which with time becomes a Th2 like response. Numerical experiments were undertaken to understand (1) heat and fluid transport in an uplifted foreland basin where fluid flow is driven by topographic gradient, and (2) effects of expulsion of geopressured fluids on the thermodynamic system in salt basins. Thermal evolution of an uplifted foreland basin is strongly affected by thermal buffering of basement rocks. Thermal buffering by basement rocks does not permit constant heat flow along the sediment-basement contact, in contrast to many previous numerical studies. Ignoring basement effects can result in serious errors in temperature prediction, such as a false transient thermal pulse in the discharge area. Carbonaceous …

This history, written from a feminist perspective, uses historical materials which trace unusual social and educational experiments in Fairhope, Alabama, in the early twentieth century. The early development of the utopian Fairhope community, founded by E. B. Gaston and a group of like-minded midwestern social reformers, is reviewed. Gaston's resolve to alleviate the worst inequities of monopolistic capitalism through practicing the single tax principles of Henry George is placed in historical context. I examined productivity, survivorship and nest-site habitat characteristics of small terrestrial landbirds breeding in bottomland hardwood forest study sites in Louisiana. Bottomland hardwood forests are the dominate ecosystem of riverine floodplains in the southeastern United States, and these forests support a diverse bird community. Over 80 percent of this forest type has been lost, primarily due to agricultural clearing, and the relative abundance of many bird species that breed in these forests has also declined. The outcomes of 790 nests of 33 species were determined. For most species, productivity was greater in large forest tracts than in small tracts. Predation …

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between preservice teachers' expressed beliefs, their practices, and how they described the two. Particular emphasis was given to factors that influenced the preservice teachers' expectations of students. The preservice teachers were in the graduate year of a five year teacher education program that embraced reflective practice. In many ways, the two preservice teachers conformed to the mold of the typical American teacher in that they were middle class, Anglo Saxon, females who were high achievers from small towns. The host systemic and peritoneal inflammatory responses against different stages of Brugia pahangi were compared in intraperitoneally infected-jirds. Systemic inflammatory responses were assessed by measuring the pulmonary granulomatous response to B. pahangi antigen-coated beads (PGRN). Peritoneal inflammation was characterized by enumeration of different cell types in peritoneal exudates following infection. Further, the toxoplasmacidal activity and TNF-$\alpha$-like production of peritoneal macrophages were also characterized. Infection with L3, L4, male worms, female worms, microfilariae (MF) or dead adult worms induced a rapid PGRN. This response decreased to levels of controls in jirds inoculated with living parasites at the chronic time period, indicating …

The first objective of this research was to develop a decondensation treatment for bovine spermatozoal DNA that worked consistently across bulls and breeds. The second objective was to use the decondensed DNA for polymerase chain reaction analysis of levels of Y-bearing spermatozoa in different ejaculates and in sex sorted spermatozoa. Decondensation of spermatozoa with dithiothreitol and potassium hydroxide was compatible with in vitro amplification and did not inhibit amplification. The polymerase chain reaction and image analysis were used to differentiate between proportions of Y spermatozoa by measuring fluorescent intensities of electrophoresed, polymerase chain reaction-amplified DNA. But, to the amazement of the United States government's Office of War Information and the music industry, the songwriters of the era could not create a martial tune that had a lasting impact on the American public. Prior to World War II there had always been a song or songs readily identifiable with past conflicts. Modeling Physical And Chemical Nonequilibrium Transport Of Herbicide In Soils From Different Tillage Systems., Shikui Xue

The physical and chemical nonequilibrium transport of alachlor were studied in a surface Gigger soil from different tillages through tracer studies, and batch and miscible displacement experiments. Batch experiments indicated initially fast reaction followed by slow adsorption. Adsorption and desorption results indicated time dependent hysteretic behavior and was best described by a multireaction model incorporating nonlinear equilibrium reaction, a reversible kinetic mechanism, and a consecutive irreversible mechanism. The model predicted alachlor hysteresis and adsorption-desorption kinetics satisfactorily based on parameters obtained from adsorption experiments.
