The effects of silvicultural treatments on mechanical and physical properties of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) wood composites, veneer tensile and bending properties, and basic chemical properties were investigated. Stands managed in a plantation setting showed higher extractive contents. Holocellulose and alpha-cellulose were minimally affected by the silvicultural strategies. Klason lignin showed an inverse relationship with holocellulose. The effect of wood type was significant for the extractives because the innerwood region yielded much greater values than the outerwood. Holocellulose and alpha-cellulose increased in concentration from innerwood to outerwood. Veneer tensile strength was significantly affected by silvicultural practice, but other mechanical …

Efficacy Of Communicative Reading Strategies As An Instructional Approach For Adult Low-Ability Readers., Sara S. Reichmuth

Twelve adult low-ability readers participated in a pretest-posttest control group study investigating the efficacy of Communicative Reading Strategies (CRS) as an instructional reading approach. Six adults received CRS instruction and constituted the experimental group. The remaining six adults received skill-based instruction and served as the control group. All participants demonstrated instructional level reading skills at or below a fifth grade level and completed 40 hours of instruction. Changes in performance on measures of word recognition, comprehension, and reading rate from pretest to posttest were used to compare CRS and control groups. Obligate root-parasitic flowering plants of the genus Striga (family Scrophulariaceae) cause considerable yield reductions of various crops in tropical and semi-tropical countries. Mature Striga species (witchweeds) plants produce copious quantities of minute seeds which remain dormant in the soil for many years until exudates from roots of various host plants induce germination. Economically effective means of control of Striga species are not yet available for small-scale farmers in developing countries. Current day interest in acts of cooperation in organizations can be traced to classical writers such as Barnard (1938) and Roethlisberger and Dickson (1939), and more recently to Katz and Kahn(1966, 1978). Building on these foundations, considerable empirical research has examined what has been labeled organizational citizenship. Organizational citizenship behaviors are not specified in job descriptions or recognized by the organization's formal reward system. Dairy Herd Improvement Records As Replacement Of Technician Breeding Receipt Database For Routine Estimates Of Non-Return Rates For Al Bulls In Technician-Devoid Areas., Rick A. Baron

The objective of this study was to find whether DHI data could be used to estimate sire non-return rates to replace current technician data estimates. Bull weighted least squares means for non-return rates were calculated separately for five overlapping 60-90 day service periods from each data source. Models included stud, sire, service number, and linear and quadratic form of breeding month for both data sources, service unit for technician and lactation for DHI data. Sire and lactation were not significant $(P > .10).$ Technician differences $(P < .05)$ were in service unit, stud, service number, and linear and quadratic service month in all but one service period. DHI differed $(P < .05)$ for service number, month (linear and quadratic), and stud in two service periods. Technician R-square values were 0.23 to 0.28 versus 0.94 to 0.96 for DHI. Sire estimated non-return rates were weighted using the inverted estimator standard error squared and compared. Sire, stud, data source, service period, and appropriate interactions were modeled. Weighted bull non-returns differed $(P < .01)$ in magnitude across data sources. Stud, data source by stud, and sire within stud by data source were significant $(P .10).$ Four fertility categories based on mean and standard deviation of the weighted estimates were formed within the data sources across service periods. These categories were correlated (0.5 $>$ r $>$ 0.9) and 52.9 to 87.4% congruent within data source for adjacent …

Aliphatic polycarbonates were synthesized by condensation of the bischloroformate of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol with cyclic aliphatic diols. Polycarbonates that lacked flexible methylene units in the backbone processed T$\sb{\rm g}\ >$ 139$\sp\circ$C. Copolycarbonates acted as resists when combined with cobalt(III)-am(m)ine tetraphenylborate complexes which act as photointiators, with tetraphenylborate serving as counter anion. The photoinitiator liberates either ammonia or ethylene diamine base upon UV exposure and the polycarbonate backbone is subject to nucleophilic attack at the carbonyl linkage by the base. Image tone was dependent on the base used. Amine complexes, Co(NH$\sb3)\sb6\sp{3+}$ effected a positive tone due to ammonia induced main chain degradation at …

This study has led to an improved understanding of the active tectonics and seismic hazards of the northeastern Mojave Desert region and has provided a means with which to assess regional strain models proposed by previous workers. Primary data sets include published and unpublished geologic maps, Landsat Thematic Mapper multi-spectral imagery, SPOT panchromatic imagery as well as hand-held ground and aerial photographs (panchromatic, color and color-infrared), color video, digital topography, gravity, seismicity and paleomagnetic data. Geographic Information System (GIS) technology was used to develop a local scale screening procedure for assessing shallow ground water's vulnerability to nitrate contamination. The procedure was based on the spatial distribution of ten key physical and chemical properties of soils. Both flow characteristics and attenuation capabilities of soils were incorporated into the assessment. Land surface areas were classified by the GIS to show the level of vulnerability present at a site as a result of existing natural conditions. As the length of open borehole increases, the risk of formation fracturing during drilling operations increases. Formation fracture often leads to an underground blowout that can be very expensive to control. The impacts of south Louisiana crude oil on three types of marsh, salt, brackish, and freshwater, dominated by Spartina alterniflora, S. patens, and Sagittaria lancifolia, respectively, were studied in the greenhouse. The influence of a number of factors such as marsh type, plant species, oil dosage, oil coverage, soil composition, leaf surface structure, season and meteorological conditions, on the impact of crude oil to marsh vegetation and revegetation were investigated. The structures of a number of novel poly(aryl ether) sulfones (nitro, aminomethyl, methyl and ethyl derivatives), which have applications as separation membranes, were determined unequivocally for the first time by applying sophisticated two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods. The degree of substitution (DS) was found to vary among the products from 0.1 percent to about 2 percent (DS: nitro, 2.0; amino, 0.11; aminomethyl, 0.76; methyl, 2.12; ethyl, 2.05). Poly($\gamma$-stearyl-$\alpha$,L-glutamate), PSLG, is a "fuzzy rod" polymer composed of a central backbone that can exist as an $\alpha$-helix. This backbone, a polypeptide, is hydrophilic. The research resulted in the development of two abstract representation models--the low-level design pattern (LLDP) abstract model and the low-level software architecture (LLSA) abstract model. Late Pleistocene depositional cycles of the Mahakam shelf contain stratal geometries that indicate a progradational continuum, from falling stage in sea level through to initial rise. These findings contrast with popular sequence stratigraphic concepts which predict that large, rapid sea-level falls, typical of the Late Pleistocene, should result in sediment bypass of the entire shelf. The Mahakam shelf is a mixed siliciclastic-carbonate depositional setting. Extensive, thick carbonate buildups are produced by prolific green algal Halimeda bioherm accretion during transgression and highstand flooding of the shelf. Deinococcus radiodurans is extremely resistant to ionizing radiation and can withstand 5 kGy $\gamma$ radiation without loss of viability or evidence of mutation. Available evidence argues that an efficient DNA repair mechanism is responsible for the resistance these organisms possess to ionizing radiation. The enzymes which coordinate DNA repair in D. radiodurans are poorly characterized. Two new loci have been detected in D. radiodurans, namely, irrB and irrI which provide resistance. Mutational inactivation of either locus resulted in a partial loss of resistance to ionizing radiation. The extent of sensitivity was locus specific and differentially affected by inactivation of the …

A monoclonal antibody (MAb)-based western blot analysis (WB) was developed for detection of a 26-28 kD coproantigen in Fasciola hepatica infected cattle. Using WB the coproantigen was detected in feces from experimentally infected calves with 22 flukes or more. Using the biotin-streptavidin modification of WB, antigen was detected in the feces from experimentally-infected calves with 10 flukes or more as early as 6 weeks post-infection. The MAbs did not react with the ES of Paramphistomum sp. or Moniezia sp, but showed slight cross-reactivity with ES from F. gigantica, and there was moderate cross-reactivity with Fascioloides magna ES. The Cytoplasmic N,N'-Diacetylchitobiase Gene From Vibrio Parahaemolyticus: Sequence Analysis, Protein Secretion, And Secretion System Development., Michael Hongli Wu

The nucleotide sequence of the gene encoding the cytoplasmic $N,N\sp\prime$-diacetylchitobiase from Vibrio parahaemolyticus has been determined. The deduced peptide sequence surprisingly has minimum evolutionary relationship to two other reported $N,N\sp\prime$-diacetylchitobiases from vibrios, except for highly conserved regions which are also homologous with lysosomal beta-hexosaminidases from eukaryotes including humans. In contrast, the other two sequenced chitobiases from vibrios are much more closely related to each other. This 85 kDa cytoplasmic protein, as revealed from the sequence, appears to be a unique protein, lacking a signal sequence and genetically distant from other known enzymes of similar function. Insecticide toxicity to hemipteran predators (i.e. Geocoris punctipes (Say), Nabis capsiformis Germar, Nabis roseipennis Reuter, and Podisus maculiventris (Say)) was evaluated using three different routes of insecticide exposure (direct contact, indirect insecticide toxicity through consumption of treated prey, and residue uptake). Pirate 3SC$\sp\circler$ (chlorfenapyr) had direct contact toxicity equal to Ambush 2E$\sp\circler$ (permethrin) and Methyl Parathion 4E$\sp\circler$ to most hemipteran predators tested. Exposure to foliage treated with Proclaim 0.16E$\sp\circler$ (emamectin benzoate) usually resulted in lower mortality as compared to Pirate. Condor OF 100F$\sp\circler$ (Bacillus thuringiensis) had the lowest contact toxicity to hemipteran predators of all insecticides tested. Pirate at 0.224 …

Community structure and relative habitat preferences of intertidal fishes from the eastern Canary Islands of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote were examined in a study of 354 tidepools at 33 localities. Habitat use and behavior of the most abundant fish Mauligobius maderensis were examined on Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. Of the 27 species encountered, 11 were common to each of the islands. The most abundant species were: M. maderensis, Parablennius parvicornis, Gobius paganellus, Coryphoblennius galerita, and Chelon labrosus. Historical route geographers consider the factors that influenced past roadbuilding, and the changes that result from roadbuilding. The earliest Spanish colonial officials in Central America initiated roadbuilding projects that were sensitive to physical and cultural factors. Officials had to consider the region's aboriginal routes, Spain's trade flows, the isthmus' topography, and the region's population distribution. The roads the Spaniards opened four centuries ago guided early settlement. In some cases, these early roads persist in the region's route network. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of two levels of instructional treatment on sixth graders' ability to solve mathematical story problems. The two levels of instructional treatment were instruction in the use of graphic organizers in conjunction with specific analytic reading skills and instruction in specific analytic reading instruction alone. These were compared to the absence of either treatment. The steady decline in students' scores on measures of ability to read and solve story problems over the past decade prompted research in three sixth-grade public school classes in northeast Louisiana. I studied the nesting ecology of the White-faced Ibis (Plegadis chihi) during the summers of 1994 and 1995 in three colonies in Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge, southwestern Louisiana. Data were collected on colony-site characteristics, chronology (with abundance) of colony formation, reproductive success, and growth and development of ibis nestlings. Small colonies nested in dense buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) and water willow (Decodon verticillatus) "islands." The largest colony nested in black willows (Salix nigra) (3.2 ha)--a habitat unique to ibis populations in Louisiana--with nests heights up to 7.5 m. Cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) (62%) and ibises (36%) were the most abundant species. …

Distributed memory parallel computers offer enormous computation power, scalability and flexibility. However, these machines are difficult to program and this limits their widespread use. An important characteristic of these machines is the difference in the access time for data in local versus non-local memory; non-local memory accesses are much slower than local memory accesses. This is also a characteristic of shared memory machines but to a less degree.
