A working model of the message exchange system is designed and developed for the AS/400 systems, a type of mid-range computer developed by IBM, thus enabling the Message Routing between the AS/400 Token Ring Network and the Internet. The routing system accommodates the in-built messaging function in the midrange computer, hence providing a common familiar interface to the user. The message system typically includes a router and an intermediate host system connected to a computer which provides the access to the Internet (technically referred as Internet Gateway). The router becomes the bridging unit between the Internet and the midrange host. …

This study uses a descriptive design to investigate how attending college may change a woman's perception of her happiness with her marriage or primary relationship. Also assessed is the presence of value change since entering college, and how such changes may affect the woman's perception of her marriage or relationship. Marital happiness was assessed in nine relationship domains by using a likert scale. The domains that showed a statistically significant decrease in marital/relationship happiness were: household responsibilities, social activities, money, and sex. The independence domain was the only one that showed a statistically significant increase in marital happiness. Ninety percent …

The Use of Portfolios to Inform Classroom Practice is a case study examining the effects of a portfolio assessment system introduced into a second grade classroom. The research was based on the philosophical analysis of Duschl and Gitomer (1991) who describe the concept of a "portfolio culture": as a result of using literacy portfolios in the classroom, what changes, if any, occur in students' metacognition, attitudes, behaviors, empowerment and engagement? Caffeine has been proported to increase endurance exercise time to exhaustion. However, the effects of caffeine on high-intensity, intermittent exercise to exhaustion have not been widely studied. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of caffeine on intermittent, high intensity exercise to exhaustion in individuals with minimal daily dietary caffeine consumption. Seven male participants, age 26 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 2 years, body mass 77 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 11 kg, and VO2{dollar}\rm\sb{max}{dollar} 47 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 7 ml/kg/min, performed a high-intensity exercise bout under both caffeine and placebo conditions administered in a counterbalanced, double blind fashion. A numerical model has been developed that can be used for industrial design of a wide range of direct contact heat exchangers (DCHXs). This model is built from some earlier work where a one-dimensional model was used to describe some very specific and limited DCHX spray-column configurations. Changes to the initial model are proposed to reflect more accurately the physics of the flows found in both two- and three-phase DCHXs. The purpose of this study was to develop an intradistrict allocation funding model. An extension of research methodology using an index-of-need as a proxy for the magnitude of educational need, this study identified indicators-of-need from the research literature and as present in 31 middle schools in Clark County School District, Las Vegas, Nevada. A neural net analysis categorized schools based on their indicator-of-need variables. Population structure and ecological morphology of four species of raptors were studied in three migratory populations. Sharp-shinned Hawks (Accipiter striatus), Cooper's Hawks (A. cooperi), Red-tailed Hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), and American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) all migrate through three major flyways in North America: the Goshute Mountains of Nevada, the Manzano Mountains of New Mexico, and Cape May Point in New Jersey. Restriction fragment analysis of mitochondrial DNA was used to elucidate population structure, and analyses of morphological characteristics provided information on ecomorphology of raptors. This study explored the influence of prior experiences on teaching schemata of traditional and nontraditional elementary preservice teachers. Data collection was conducted at Western State University (WSU) in the desert southwest, U.S.A. The influence of prior experiences on two dimensions of teaching schemata were explored in this study. Stimulated recall interviews of peer lessons illuminated the influence of prior experiences on thirty-eight traditional and twenty-two nontraditional elementary preservice teachers' classroom interactive dimensions (CID). The method employed was the development of a composite indicator--an index of need--based upon commonly accepted at-risk indicators. Evidence of deep geographic structure in many taxonomic lineages throughout the arid regions of western North America suggests potential for recovering episodes of vicariant isolation and divergence through comparative biogeographic approaches. Vicariance biogeography predicts that suites of co-occurring taxa should demonstrate similar geographic patterns of genetic divergence resulting from simultaneous isolation of formerly contiguous regional populations. Previous molecular phylogeographic work on small, non-volant desert taxa tended to focus on one or two species, often with limited distributions. Three studies were conducted to investigate the use of alternative methods to provide instruction, advisement, and field-based supervision to preservice special education practicum students. Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a Resource Room Practicum course participated. The studies took place over a 16-week semester period; Sixty-seven students from the course participated in Study 1. This study involved the use of three instructional methods to provide instruction to the students (i.e., broadcast classroom, receiving ITV classroom, videotape lectures). The main reason for the utilization of stainless steels in many applications is due to their resistance to corrosion. Chromium is the main alloying element and stainless steel contains a minimum of 11%. Austenitic stainless steels, Type 300 series, contain nickel as the principal austenite former. The austenitic stainless steels possess better corrosion resistance than most of the chromium stainless steels. For this reason austenitic stainless steels are specified for more severe corrosion conditions in the process industries. This dissertation presents results from research in experimental and numerical studies related to deep denting of mild steel pipes. Two sets of large scale steel pipes having similar aspect ratios, diameter to thickness (D/t) of 64 and length to diameter (L/D) of 4.5 to 5 were tested in the laboratory and analyzed by nonlinear finite element method (FEA). The goal of this project is to investigate the physical properties of a sample of galaxies in the Bootes Void, and to classify these galaxies based on the properties of emission lines in their spectra. The spectra of 26 galaxies in the Bootes Void are analyzed. Fourteen galaxies are classified as HII galaxies with properties similar to field HII galaxies. Two of these galaxies, 1432 + 5302 and 1507 + 4554, are classified as extreme starburst (ESB) galaxies. Approximately 48% of the galaxies with measurable H{dollar}\alpha{dollar} + (NII) emission have elevated rates of star formation, based on equivalent widths. Continuum …

Avian species richness, species diversity, and density were measured and compared over a 21 month period on six riparian sites in Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA), southern Nevada. Sites consisted of two lake shore areas with almost pure stands of Tamarix ramosissima and four stream side areas, two with mixed Tamarix and native vegetation and two with only native vegetation. Overall mean avian species richness, diversity, and density were lowest on lake shore sites, intermediate on mixed stream sites and highest on stream sites with native vegetation. A new method is developed that combines the production of ions by laser ablation with a reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (RTOFMS) for charge-transfer cross section measurements. This method allows a specific charge-transfer channel of an ion-neutral pair to be measured at energies of about 0.1 KeV/amu. The charge-transfer cross section is determined by measuring the intensity ratio of the product ions to the parent ions after the charge-transfer reactions occur in the reflection drift tube of the RTOFMS. First, a calibration measurement of C{dollar}\sp{2+}{dollar} with H{dollar}\sb2{dollar} is carried out and the result agrees with previous measurements by other research groups. …

An assessment of lodging/gaming properties responsiveness to the requirements of Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act examines three Las Vegas lodging gaming/properties in detail. The assessment is made though the use of varying methodologies that generated (1) the organizational policies for responding to the intent of the law and (2) the physical ability of the properties to comply with the law. In addition, the opinions of disabled persons who are current users of Las Vegas' lodging/gaming industry.
