Separation between owner and manager in the lodging industry may cause a conflict of the interests between them. An investigation was conducted to determine the relationship between managerial ownership and performance in the lodging industry and to further determine whether this relationship differs across the two sectors, regular hotels and casino hotels, in the lodging industry; Statistical tests, using regression, revealed size adjusted managers' ownership percentage had a significant relationship with hotels performance in terms of operational and managerial activities and shareholder's relevance, such as profit margin, hotels operating return and hotels return on equity. An understanding of how locomotion occurs can help prevent or possibly restore its loss. Observations of coordination and reflex gating during locomotion display characteristics indicative of subcortical influence. These findings support the existence of neural circuits in the spine and cerebellum that coordinate muscle activity and reflex activity during locomotion. These circuits are generally called central pattern generators (CPG's). A task that strains the modulation of reflexes but not coordination (e.g., out-of-phase walking) may yield dissociative patterns of errors, which would provide important information about the complexity of the subcortical circuitry. Victims of domestic violence are often blamed for the violence they experience. Previous research has found that these victims experience many psychological difficulties while in the relationship. Fifty women that differed in amount of time out of their abusive situations were studied. Each subject completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2), the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS), and a brief demographic sheet; It was hypothesized that the longer the women had been out of the relationship the lower the levels of psychopathology they would exhibit. Results indicated that psychopathology levels did not significantly correlate with length of time since termination. Correlations …

This study examines the use of sensemaking and power/influence in the governance process of an emerging corporation. It emphasizes the use of the interpretive paradigm in examining the ways in which reality is socially constructed by a board of directors. This text explores the definition of governance at the emerging corporation from the inside. It examines the effects of board decisions on the corporation by focusing on a specific emerging corporation--here fictiously identified as "Softalk Corporation"--in a major American city. A 3-dimensional model that calculates windfields over irregular terrain based on meteorological tower data has been developed. The governing equations of atmospheric motion, the finite element method and atmospheric boundary layer concept have been introduced. A surface model of the Nevada Test Site (NTS) has been generated from DEM files which contain elevation data, and a 3-D mesh has been generated. Initial estimates of the velocity field are developed by interpolating surface and upper level wind measurements. Consent of the Governed: Term Limits and American Democracy reviews the arguments and methods of proponents of term limits for members of Congress and other legislative representatives. These are contrasted to past theories and to the actual application of "rotation in office" in the constitutions adopted by the American states during the Revolutionary era. These early constitutions were discriminating in their use of rotation, generally reserving it for executive or administrative offices. This thesis deals with the problem of computing shortest watchman routes in the presence of polygonal obstacles. Important recent results on watchman route problems are surveyed. A method was developed for the separation and identification of difluorobenzoic acids by high performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS) with a particle beam interface (PB). The development of this method included the optimization of the mobile phase and MS parameters for the best separation and detection of the analytes. A performance evaluation procedure for PB HPLC/MS operation was established. Ionization control and ion pairing techniques were employed in an attempt to achieve the chromatographic separation. The Geology And Structures In The Northern Hiko Range, Lincoln County, Nevada, Douglas Duane Switzer

In the northern Hiko Range, extension occurred in four temporally distinct episodes during the Cenozoic. The extensional events are (1) prevolcanic ({dollar}>{dollar}27.31 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 0.03 Ma), (2) synvolcanic (between 22.78 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 0.03 and 18.5 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 0.4 Ma), (3) Tertiary (?) postvolcanic ({dollar}<{dollar}14.7 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 0.4 Ma), and (4) Pliocene (?)-Quaternary. Four fault sets are delineated based on orientation and cross-cutting relationships: (1) northeast- to northwest-striking moderately dipping prevolcanic faults, (2) east-west-striking, steeply dipping synvolcanic faults, (3) east-west- and east-northeast-striking, steeply dipping Tertiary (?) postvolcanic faults, and (4) generally north-striking steeply dipping Pliocene (?)-Quaternary faults; Prevolcanic faults in the northern Hiko Range are interpreted to be footwall faults to an Oligocene age extensional system. These faults increase the area known to be affected by Oligocene extension and support existing evidence that suggests this event is widespread; A tectonomagmatic rift model has been proposed to explain synvolcanic extension during the Tertiary in the northern Basin and Range province. However, the majority of the faults are postvolcanic and are not readily explained by the tectonomagmatic rift model. Both east-west- and east-northeast-striking oblique-slip faults occur along the Timpahute lineament. They appear to be the result of stresses produced by the Tertiary southward sweep of volcanism, in combination with a reduction of plate boundary stresses, which occurred after volcanism; The Hiko fault zone is a segmented fault of Pliocene (?)-Quaternary age that may still be active and is interpreted to be the bounding fault of a half graben in Pahranagat Valley. This is a study of polygamy using economic theory and economic models. The focus of this research is an analysis of the occurrence of polygyny in the early Mormon church, and its effects on the members of the state of Utah, both Mormon and non-Mormon. This study is unique in that its subject, Mormon polygyny, was socially acceptable in Utah, but illegal, and often prosecuted, under Federal law. Although methodologies and results of some studies have been questioned, there is agreement that the designed environment can influence human behavior; Findings in this study were generated by the analysis of two Las Vegas apartment complexes. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between hopelessness and spiritual well-being in a population of persons diagnosed to be Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) positive. Demographic variables were examined to determine their potential relationship to hopelessness and spiritual well-being. The Neuman Systems Model was used as the conceptual framework for the research. The sample was similar in gender to the national population of persons diagnosed with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Dolby Digital, or AC-3, provides for the compression of high-quality audio signals at a bit rate of 384 kbps. for 5.1 audio channels. The purpose of this thesis is to conduct an analysis and evaluation of the AC-3 compression algorithm. The main conclusion is that AC-3 allocates too few bits to the upper frequency ranges. This conclusion is supported by two lines of argument. First, a comparison of the AC-3 perceptual coding model with known facts concerning the masking properties of sound reveals omissions in the AC-3 perceptual model that lead to loss of high frequency resolution. Archaeological research of the Neolithic period in Southwest Asia depicts socio-cultural developments and proto-urban villages, resulting from an intensifying agro-economy, emerging simultaneously during the first 5,000 years of the Holocene (11,000 to 6,000 bp). Kholetria-Ortos, Cyprus, and Wadi Shu'eib, Jordan, are highlighted in this thesis to illustrate variability found in a proposed "Neolithic package." The "Neolithic package" is a time capsule of items and ideas centered on sedentary villages participating in a domesticated plant/animal driven economy that provided subsistence and surplus to a growing population. The U.S. has experienced a dramatic proliferation of corporate master-planned communities, along with a related equally sharp increase in the numbers of people governed by private residential community associations (RCAs). Increasing by approximately 9,500 annually, RCA's are expected to grow from 130,000 in 1990 to approximately 225,000 by the year 2000. This trend is a manifestation of both the historical commodification of urban and community space and the gradual imposition of the corporate bureaucratic structure into community maintenance and governance. Located in the southeast corner of the Nevada Test Site, Camp Desert Rock was established in 1951 when U.S. military leaders decided American ground troops needed physical and psychological training in the tactics of atomic warfare. Discretionary powers are denied to implementors, resulting in a condition of abstracted judgment that can cripple or derail the original intent. The Pareto distribution is widely used to describe the distribution of incomes. The distribution can be defined by a location parameter c and a shape parameters a. The maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) and the uniform minimum variance unbiased estimators (UMVUE) for parameters a and c are available in current literature. An improved estimator for parameter a will then be found using a frequentist decision theoretic technique. The researcher wants to discover how the films gained success given their controversial themes. The films are analyzed based on the presence of Reich's cultural myths and Reike and Sillars' value systems. The purpose of this descriptive, quantitative study was to examine factors that could predict a woman's timing of prenatal care initiation. Participation in early prenatal care, a type of health-promoting behavior, has been associated with improved maternal/child health. This study of political and religious rhetoric questions the means by which a staunch religious individual becomes successful in the political arena. The overt religious and political rhetoric of Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AR), who is also an ordained Baptist minister, is analyzed by method of textual analysis. Three speeches from different contexts are examined with the assistance of the Q.S.R. NUD.IST program for qualitative data analysis. Buying, selling, and transporting natural gas through underground pipelines has historically been regulated. However, in 1978 the Natural Gas Policy Act was passed, reducing the control that regulators had over the price of natural gas.
