A Study Of The Relationship Between Optical Dot Gain And Mechanical Dot Gain Of Am And Fm Halftones, Eva Gronberg Nov 1996

A Study Of The Relationship Between Optical Dot Gain And Mechanical Dot Gain Of Am And Fm Halftones, Eva Gronberg

Theses

FM screening differs from conventional screening by the absence of screen ruling and the use of small micro dots to represent the tonal values in an image. FM screens have a high dot gain which is comparable to the dot gain of very fine conventional screens. Some tests showed that FM screens are more stable on press compared to AM screens, that is, they experience less variation in dot gain when the solid ink density is increasing. The major questions of this study were: 1) What is the relationship between mechanical and optical dot gain for FM screens? Is the …

A New Image Of The Slave Auction: An Empirical Look At The Role Of Law In Slave Sales And A Conceptual Reevaluation Of The Nature Of Slave Property, Thomas D. Russell Nov 1996

A New Image Of The Slave Auction: An Empirical Look At The Role Of Law In Slave Sales And A Conceptual Reevaluation Of The Nature Of Slave Property, Thomas D. Russell

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

This legal history article presents a new understanding of the nature of slave property. Slave property was divided and fragmented into many different interests including those with application to real property such life estates, remainders, shifting and spring interests, and leasehold interests. With regard to these interests, the article overlays the first-year, law-school property course onto slaves as property. Property interests in slaves were also divided by credit mechanisms including mortgages and secured credit transactions. Warranties are another example of divided property interests in slaves.

The fragmented, Hohfeldian nature of slave property distributed the stake that southerners had in the …

Multimedia Applications Require Adaptive Cpu Scheduling, Veronica Baiceanu, Crispin Cowan, Dylan Mcnamee, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole Nov 1996

Multimedia Applications Require Adaptive Cpu Scheduling, Veronica Baiceanu, Crispin Cowan, Dylan Mcnamee, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

CPU scheduling and admission testing for multimedia applications have been extensively studied, and various solutions have been proposed using assorted simplifying assumptions. However, we believe that the complexity and dynamic behavior of multimedia applications and systems make static solutions hard to apply in real-world situations. We are analyzing the difficulties that arise when applying the rate-monotonic (RM) scheduling algorithm and the corresponding admission tests for CPU management, in the context of real multimedia applications running on real systems. RM requires statically predictable, periodic workloads, and while multimedia applications appear to be periodic, in practice they exhibit numerous variabilities in workload. …

We report & gamma;-ray detection performance measurements and computer simulations of a sub-millimeter pitch CdZnTe strip detector. The detector is a prototype for & gamma;-ray astronomy measurements in the range of 20-200 keV. The prototype is a 1.5 mm thick, 64×64 orthogonal stripeCdZnTe detector of 0.375 mm pitch in both dimensions, with approximately one square inch of sensitive area. Using discrete laboratory electronics to process signals from an 8×8 stripe region of the prototype we measured good spectroscopic uniformity and sub-pitch (~0.2 mm) spatial resolution in both x and y dimensions. We present below measurements of the spatial uniformity, relative …

Penal Institutions Jails: Provide Law Enforcement Officers With Guidelines For Handling Detainees With Obvious Physical Injuries Or Need For Emergency Medical Attention, Tamara N. Baines Nov 1996

Penal Institutions Jails: Provide Law Enforcement Officers With Guidelines For Handling Detainees With Obvious Physical Injuries Or Need For Emergency Medical Attention, Tamara N. Baines

Georgia State University Law Review

The Act reduces the penalty imposed upon law enforcement officers for refusing to accept custody of persons charged with or guilty of an indictable offense (detainees). The Act allows law enforcement officers to refuse custody of detainees who have not received medical attention for obvious emergency medical conditions or physical injuries. The Act provides for the disposition of detainees when custody has been refused, when a medical release has been received, or when no public health facility is located in the country. The Act also provides for the payment of costs related to medical assessments.

Experimental Validation Of Finite Element Analysis Software Applied To The Design Of A Motorcycle Swingarm, Bret Schaller Nov 1996

Experimental Validation Of Finite Element Analysis Software Applied To The Design Of A Motorcycle Swingarm, Bret Schaller

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This thesis documents the experimental validation of finite element analysis software applied to the design of a motorcycle swingarm. The process includes design and implementation of an onboard data acquisition system; definition and measurement of operational loads; laboratory correlation of loads; experimental validation of Pro/Mechanica finite element analysis software; design and prototype development of a single-sided motorcycle swingarm; and computer modeling using the Pro/Engineer solid modeling package.

Observation Of Spatial Variability Of Diurnal Thermocline And Rain-Formed Halocline In The Western Pacific Warm Pool, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

High-resolution measurements of temperature and salinity were made in the near-surface layer of the ocean during the Tropical Oceans-Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment, using probes mounted on the bow of the R/V Moana Wave. Because of surface waves and pitching of the vessel, the bow probes profiled the near-surface layer of the ocean within depths of 0–4.0 m. In the near-surface layer of the ocean in the western Pacific warm pool, strong variability of temperature and salinity produced by diurnal heating and/or rain was often observed. The contoured density field revealed cases of pronounced spatial variability. The shallow …

Image Quality Metrics And Optimum Focus Criteria For Visual Optical Systems, Xiaoxue Cheng Nov 1996

Image Quality Metrics And Optimum Focus Criteria For Visual Optical Systems, Xiaoxue Cheng

Theses

Image quality metrics for visual instruments were examined in terms of their through focus behavior in the presence of various aberrations, and their correlations with available subjective performance data. The contrast sensitivity measurements were performed using rotationally symmetric, variable contrast difference-of-gaussians (DOG) targets, viewed through specially designed telescopes that presented various amounts of monochromatic aberrations. Then the contrast sensitivity ratios were correlated with the image quality metrics of the telescopes. The results show that an appropriately defined integral of the instrument-observer MTF (called MTFa) correlates well with subjective performance in most cases and predicts the optimum focus best; the radius …

Law Of Directed Trustees Under Erisa: A Proposed Blueprint For The Federal Courts, The, Colleen E. Medill Nov 1996

Law Of Directed Trustees Under Erisa: A Proposed Blueprint For The Federal Courts, The, Colleen E. Medill

Missouri Law Review

Congress enacted the Employee Retirement Income Security Act ("ERISA"), the federal law governing private employer-sponsored employee benefit plans, over twenty years ago. Since that time, private retirement plan funds have become an even more dominant element of United States savings and capital markets. In 1992, the most recent year for which data is available, private retirement plan assets exceeded two trillion dollars, almost a ten-fold increase over 1975 asset levels. "Discretionary" trustees have exclusive discretionary authority to manage and control plan assets.' "Directed" trustees manage and control plan assets subject to the directions of another fiduciary named in the document …
