A study was performed to investigate the processing parameters of thermoplastic composites. Three configurations of compression molding dies were machined and used to produce composite specimens. Composite specimens made of AS4/Nylon-6 and AS4/Polyphenylene Sulfide (AS4/PPS) prepreg tape were manufactured under four processing conditions. The processing parameters that were studied were maximum pressure and the dwell time at maximum pressure and temperature; A total of twenty-four specimens were made. Cross sections of each were analyzed for fiber volume fraction using a microscope and image analysis software. A group of 95 actinomycete-like bacterial isolates were obtained from the deep subsurface at the Nevada Test Site. These isolates were screened for the ability to inhibit the growth of selected challenge organisms. A subset of 12 isolates were found to produce antibacterial substances during their growth and were termed bioactive. It was hypothesized that because the isolation source was solid rock, some of the bioactive isolates would require the presence of a surface in order to make antibiotic substances, and that some of these isolates would fail to produce antibiotics when grown in broth culture alone. In this thesis we describe a spelling correction system designed specifically for OCR (Optical Character Recognition) generated text that selects candidate words through the use of information gathered from multiple knowledge sources. This system for text correction is based on static and dynamic device mappings, approximate string matching, and n-gram analysis. Our statistically based, Bayesian system incorporates a learning feature that collects confusion information at the collection and document levels. An evaluation of the new system is presented as well.

A statistical pattern recognition system for ultrasound medical images of prostatic tissue for cancer has been proposed. Using the autocorrelation method, the correct size of a statistical sliding window for feature extraction was defined. Known texture discrimination features have been tested for effectiveness. Another set of discriminating features, based on edge value distribution, Fourier power spectrum and wavelet transform has been derived and investigated. The set can be used as an input to a neural net classifier.

Experiments were conducted to assess and model the effects of unsaturated zone soil moisture content on vapor-phase pollutant propagation in a controlled setting. A two-dimensional sandtank was utilized for controlled vapor-phase experiments, with pollutant vapors of octane and diesel fuel introduced through a finely slotted source tube. Soil moisture content was varied from 0% to 10% by weight for octane experiments, and from 0% to 5% by weight for diesel fuel. The effects of introduced soil moisture on the transport of each pollutant vapor were observed via soil-gas sampling from access ports. Soil-gas samples were analyzed with FID gas chromatography …

The purpose of this study was to explore the stigma of obesity and its effect on health care utilization. The associations between self-esteem, attribution for weight, body mass index (BMI), satisfaction with medical care and the behavior of delaying/avoiding health care were examined. King's Interacting Systems Framework provided the conceptual framework for this study. Self-administered questionnaires were completed by 216 women recruited from church sites in a southwest city; Correlations, multiple regressions, and analysis of variance were used to analyze the data. Acoustical breakout is the transmission of sound through the walls of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning ducts. Equations for predicting the breakout from rectangular, circular, and oval sheet metal ducts have been published by the American Society of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); Recent advances in manufacturing techniques have led to the development of fiberglass lined sheet metal ducts, and ducts made from fiberglass ductboard. In this thesis, we investigate distributed mutual exclusion algorithms and delineate the features of a new distributed mutual exclusion algorithm. The basis of the algorithm is the logical ring structure employed in token-based mutual exclusion algorithms. Specifically, there exists dynamic properties of the logical ring that, given certain restrictions regarding message traffic flow, passively give useful information about the location of the token. Effectively, the algorithm demonstrates a type of "intelligent routing" that identifies useful shortcuts to in the routing of the token. Uranium concentrations and {dollar}\rm\sp{234}U/\sp{238}U{dollar} isotope ratios were determined for over 100 springs, wells and surface waters in areas on and surrounding the historical nuclear weapons testing range in southern Nevada, the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Uranium concentrations were less than 2 {dollar}\mu{dollar}g/liter in the Spring Mountains, where ground water enters the system, and between 2.5 and 5 {dollar}\mu{dollar}g/liter in waters discharging from the major springs at Ash Meadows, Nevada and the Death Valley-Furnace Creek area of southeastern California. Slightly higher levels of dissolved uranium (6-15 {dollar}\mu{dollar}g/liter) were associated with the weathering of susceptible rocks and the concentration of ground water …

When the enamel-like top layer of the desert soil is compromised, natural and man-made forces result in airborne dust particulates. This is of specific concern in plutonium contaminated soil excavation. Conventional water spraying techniques are effective in preventing large airborne dust particles but are ineffective for dust particles on the order of a few micrometers in diameter and smaller. One means of extracting these fine radio nuclide particulates from the air is with a quasi-electrostatic air filter which charges, traps, transports, and collects them with the aid of electrostatic and quasi-electrostatic fields. This study evaluated results obtained from two routinely used sample preparation methods: microwave digestion and lithium fusion. Three different microwave digestion procedures and a lithium metaborate fusion method were examined. Forty trace elements in addition to 16 rare earth elements were determined in three distinct rock types and one standard reference material by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Lithium fusion resulted in excellent recovery of rare earth and some trace elements including Be, V, Sr, U, Hf, Nb and Ta, but the some elements Pb, Cr, Zn were lost. The zooplankton community of Little Fish Lake exists in a seasonally and interannually variable physical environment. This shallow endorheic lake is particularly sensitive to climatic variability; depth and salinity fluctuate during periods of prolonged evaporation or precipitation. I examined zooplankton seasonal succession in Little Fish Lake during a period of relatively low salinity from March 1995 through March 1996. The community was more diverse during my study than it had been in periods of high salinity. While abiotic conditions probably affected the community structure, biotic interactions such as predation likely influenced succession as well. I observed interactions between the predaceous …

This paper presents a method for realizing power loss and reactive power flow reductions on an electrical power transmission system. The method determines the size and location of reactive power compensating capacitors. In the first phase, candidate busses (nodes) are identified by determining which substations are physically able to accommodate new capacitor and associated switching apparatus. Phase two employs an iterative search technique, the Western System Coordinating Council (WSCC) power flow program and heuristic inputs to choose the single buss most sensitive to real power loss reduction. The focus of this project was to develop fluorescence-based immunoassays for the determination of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Three formats using polyclonal anti-2,4-D sera were developed, the first being a homogeneous, competitive assay based on the principle of fluorescence energy transfer. This assay exhibited a linear dynamic range of 100 ppb to 100 ppm; The next two formats are heterogeneous, competitive assays that were developed using a prototype KinExA{dollar}\rm\sp{TM}{dollar} immunoanalyzer. The assay formats use either antibody or antigen coated polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) beads as a renewable solid phase. Past research on the transition to parenthood has consistently found that this life phase results in many changes in a couple's marital relationship, specifically declines in couples' marital adjustment. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between constructive communication, personality traits, and spouses' marital adjustment during the transition to parenthood; Participants were 70 married couples expecting their first child. Self-report measures were administered to all participants during the third trimester of pregnancy, three months postpartum, and nine months postpartum; Results showed that marital adjustment significantly declined during the transition to parenthood. In this thesis, the rhetoric surrounding President Clinton's announcement will be compared to the rhetoric surrounding President Truman's order for racial integration of the armed services. These significant presidential announcements, while seemingly unrelated, changed the focus of national debate on two controversial issues. To determine what similarities and differences exist in the rhetoric surrounding the two events I will compare the events using analog criticism (a method of comparing and contrasting two rhetorical events) as the framework for the study. Government studies and newspaper accounts of both rhetorical events will be relied upon to contrast and compare the rhetorical events.

This thesis will examine the role of Jiang Qing in the events of China known as the Cultural Revolution, and show that this revolution was affected in its political as well as its cultural aspects by her influence. Historians have not carefully examined Jiang Qing's role in China's history, and have commonly regarded her simply as "Mao's wife." The theme that will be developed in this thesis is that she was of major importance in China during the years 1966-1976, the period of the Cultural Revolution. Materials from a variety of sources are analyzed and synthesized to support this position.

Induction motors are known to cause undesirable voltage dip because of high inrush current during starting, especially when fed from weak AC systems. For this reason, large motors are often started with reduced voltage. This thesis proposes full-voltage motor starting with shunt capacitors. Two types of capacitors are used: power factor correction capacitor and start capacitor. The start capacitor is determined to maximize the input impedance during starting in order to reduce the initial inrush current. The analysis shows that shunt capacitors improve the voltage dip and the motor acceleration significantly but introduce some level of waveform distortion during each …

The reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) specular spot intensity oscillations that were obtained during low-temperature regime and surfactant mediated regime of molecular beam epitaxial (MBE) growth of GaAs is studied and explained using modified stochastic model and a rate equation model, respectively; The dynamics of the physisorbed As layer were introduced into the stochastic model by including the thermally activated processes of chemisorption into and evaporation out of the As physisorbed state.
