An Infrared Absorption Investigation Of Hydrogen, Deuterium, And Nitrogen In Znse Grown By Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Zhonghai Yu, S. L. Buczkowski, L. S. Hirsch, T. H. Myers Jan 1996

An Infrared Absorption Investigation Of Hydrogen, Deuterium, And Nitrogen In Znse Grown By Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Zhonghai Yu, S. L. Buczkowski, L. S. Hirsch, T. H. Myers

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Surprising concentrations of hydrogen and deuterium, as high as 5×10 cm, were incorporated into nitrogen‐doped ZnSe grown on GaAs by molecular beam epitaxy. Infrared absorption bands due to local vibration modes were observed at 3193 and 783 cm for ZnSe:N,H samples, and at 2368 cm for ZnSe:N,D samples using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The isotopic shift in the absorption band agrees with predictions of a simple harmonic oscillator approximation for N–H bonding. The variation of the absorption band associated with substitutional nitrogen with nitrogen concentration indicates that not all nitrogen is substitutional, and also exhibited significant changes related to hydrogen …

Analytical Results On Quantum Interference And Magnetoconductance For Strongly Localized Electrons In A Magnetic Field: Exact Summation Of Forward-Scattering Paths, Yeong-Lieh Lin, Franco Nori Jan 1996

Analytical Results On Quantum Interference And Magnetoconductance For Strongly Localized Electrons In A Magnetic Field: Exact Summation Of Forward-Scattering Paths, Yeong-Lieh Lin, Franco Nori

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We study quantum interference effects on the transition strength for strongly localized electrons hopping on 2D square and 3D cubic lattices in the presence of a magnetic field B. These effects arise from the interference between phase factors associated with different electron paths connecting two distinct sites. For electrons confined on a square lattice, with and without disorder, we obtain closed-form expressions for the tunneling probability, which determines the conductivity, between two arbitrary sites by exactly summing the corresponding phase factors of all forward-scattering paths connecting them. An analytic field-dependent expression, valid in any dimension, for the magnetoconductance (MC) is …

Finite-Temperature Feynman Propagator In Operator Form, H. Arthur Weldon Jan 1996

Finite-Temperature Feynman Propagator In Operator Form, H. Arthur Weldon

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In momentum space the time-ordered, retarded, and Feynman thermal propagators all satisfy rather simple dispersion relations. In coordinate space the first two propagators are related to the thermal Wightman function Tr[{phi}({ital x}){phi}(0){ital e}{sup {minus}{beta}{ital H}}]. However, the Feynman thermal propagator in coordinate space, {ital D}{sub {ital F}}({ital x}), is not related to this thermal average and does not satisfy a KMS condition in complex time. When expressed in terms of matrix elements of the field operator, it requires a new type of operator ordering. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}

Hybridization-Induced Magnetism In Correlated Cerium Systems, Nicholas Kioussis, J. Thevenot, Bernard R. Cooper, Q. G. Sheng Jan 1996

Hybridization-Induced Magnetism In Correlated Cerium Systems, Nicholas Kioussis, J. Thevenot, Bernard R. Cooper, Q. G. Sheng

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

There is a great change in the nature of the magnetic ordering on going from CeIn3, a local moment antiferromagnetic system, to CePb3, a heavy fermion itinerant antiferromagnetic system, both of which have Cu3Au crystal structure. We have applied ab initio electronic structure calculations, based on the linear-muffin-tin-orbital method, and a phenomenological theory of orbitally driven magnetic ordering, to study the effects of the band-f hybridization-induced interactions and the band-f exchange-induced interactions, pertinent to the magnetic behavior of these systems. The position of the Ce 4 f energy level relative to the Fermi energy and the intra-atomic Coulomb interaction are …

Building Community Commitment For A Region's Future: The Case Of Port Stephens, Australia, Harold Richins Jan 1996

Building Community Commitment For A Region's Future: The Case Of Port Stephens, Australia, Harold Richins

Visions in Leisure and Business

With tremendous growth in coastal communities of Australia within the last two decades, intense pressures have been placed on local communities, especially in the areas where tourism is a growing phenomenon. People living in these sensitive regions have been searching for long term solutions. There are many challenges, however, in meeting the needs and dealing with the complex relationships between tourists, residents, investors, providers of tourist and lifestyle experiences, non-government and government organisations. To meet these difficulties, community groups have attempted to gain local awareness of the costs and benefits of more responsible, community based approaches to tourism and other …

Setting An International Precedent: Ecotourism In Australia, Harold Richins

Visions in Leisure and Business

Ecotourism within Australia has become an important focus at the regional, state and national level. With ten listed world heritage sites, Australia is well placed in providing ecotourism experiences to visitors, both domestically and internationally. There are, however great challenges in balancing development pressures and conservation needs. Australia has been focusing on the natural environment and has a growing commitment to preserving a quality lifestyle for future generations as well as maintaining as much as possible of its biodiversity. It is now at the forefront of major progress in embracing Ecotourism as a sustainable future focus. Australia is one of …

Women, Polygyny And Power, Michelle J. Lundeen

Nebraska Anthropologist

This paper focuses on the power possessed by polygynous women within the domestic sphere. comparing women in wealth increasing polygynous societies (represented by the Swazi of Africa and the Mormons of North America) with women in sororal polygynous societies (represented by the Mardudjara of Australia and the Achuar of South America) in an effort to determine which of these patterns is related to greater domestic power for women.

The Influence Of Attitudes, Subjective Norms And Perceived Behavioral Controls On Hotel Guests' Intention To Return, Fen-Ju Lin, Linda S. Ralston Jan 1996

The Influence Of Attitudes, Subjective Norms And Perceived Behavioral Controls On Hotel Guests' Intention To Return, Fen-Ju Lin, Linda S. Ralston

Visions in Leisure and Business

Customer retention is important to innkeepers to increase repeat business; however, little research has been done to explain and predict why some hotel guests intend to return to a certain hotel when they travel, and others do not. By applying the theory of planned behavior (1), this study examined the factors that influenced the guests' attitudes toward returning, subjective norms with respect to returning, perceived behavioral controls over returning, and guests' intentions of returning from a population of past guests of a hotel. Besides a guest's attitudes toward returning, results of this study have indicated that social influences and situational …

Theme Parks And Attractions In Singapore: An Overview, Ah Keng Kau Jan 1996

Theme Parks And Attractions In Singapore: An Overview, Ah Keng Kau

Visions in Leisure and Business

Singapore attracted almost 7 million visitors in 1994. Receipts from tourists also accounted for about 10 percent of the gross national product. As a small island of only 640 square kilometers, Singapore has almost no natural scenery to offer. Many of its tourism attractions are man-made and theme parks play an important role in attracting visitors not only from abroad but also locally. This paper aims to describe the local theme park industry and examine its problems and prospects. It is found that the theme parks in Singapore will face stiff competition, not only from each other, but also from …
