Men May Work From Sun To Sun, But Women's Work Is Never Done: International Law And The Regulation Of Women's Work At Night, Christine Haight Farley Jan 1996

Men May Work From Sun To Sun, But Women's Work Is Never Done: International Law And The Regulation Of Women's Work At Night, Christine Haight Farley

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

At the turn of the century in both the United States and in Europe, governments enacted laws to protect women from the most harmful aspects of industrialization. One such piece of protective legislation was the ban on the employment of women at night. Discovering that regulation of working hours had a negative effect on their competition in the world market, these western states looked to impose this standard internationally. Thus in 1919 the International Labor Organization enacted the Convention Concerning Employment of Women During the Night.

By the time the International Labor Organization responded to complaints that the convention was …

The Relationship Of Student Retention To Teacher/Student Personality Types At Summit Christian College, C. Joseph Martin Jan 1996

The Relationship Of Student Retention To Teacher/Student Personality Types At Summit Christian College, C. Joseph Martin

Dissertations

For the past 3 decades, retention studies have emerged as being of significant importance to the smaller colleges and universities, especially the private colleges and universities, including Summit Christian College. With the decline in the high-school population, which was predicted to occur in the mid-70s, retention was going to be of even more importance to the smaller educational institutions. All of this pointed toward a time when colleges would have to compete for the high-school graduate in a more aggressive manner. It was possible that unless new ways of coping with the drop-out rate were initiated, a number of smaller …

Paradise Lost, Paradigm Found: Redefining The Judiciary's Imperiled Role In Congress, Charles G. Geyh Jan 1996

Paradise Lost, Paradigm Found: Redefining The Judiciary's Imperiled Role In Congress, Charles G. Geyh

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Long perceived as acting in splendid isolation, the legislative and judicial branches have become increasingly intertwined. The judiciary is becoming more involved in the legislative province of statutory reform, and Congress has inserted itself more frequently into the judicial territory of procedural rulemaking. In this article, Professor Geyh observes that a new, interactive paradigm has replaced the perceived model of separation and delegation between the brandies. As the judiciary and Congress have grown more enmeshed, the judiciary's reputation has suffered, both from a Watergate-vintage mistrust of all things governmental and from a perception that judicial activism is born of self-interest …

The Kinetic Family Drawing As A Measure Of Minuchin's Structural Family Concepts Among Hispanic American Families With Substance-Abusing And Nonsubstance-Abusing Adolescents, José Osorio-Braña

Dissertations

Problem. There is a need for validation of new cultural-sensitive tests for assessing the Hispanic population in the United States that will take into account their cultural competence in the psychological evaluation practice. The purpose of this study was to explore the suitability of the Kinetic Family Drawings as a measure of Minuchin's Structural Family Theory among Hispanic American families with substance-abusing and nonsubstance-abusing adolescents.

Method. The Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD), the Structural Family Interaction Scale-Revised (SFIS-R), and the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scales (FACES II) were administered to 141 families, 74 with an adolescent with substance-abusing problems and 67 …

Marketing Seventh-Day Adventist Higher Education In Southeast Asia, Geoffrey A. Pauner Jan 1996

Marketing Seventh-Day Adventist Higher Education In Southeast Asia, Geoffrey A. Pauner

Dissertations

Problem

There has been a concern by educational leaders of the Adventist church in the Asia Pacific Division that a number of parents of Seventh-day Adventist students choose to educate their children in non-Adventist primary and secondary schools. This study sought to determine if this concern is prevalent in Adventist colleges in Southeast Asia. To find answers to this concern the following questions were posed.

1. What methods do these colleges use to promote or recruit SDA students?

2. How do these colleges attract SDA students?

3. What special programs are in place in the colleges to retain SDA students? …

Job Satisfaction Among Teachers In Seventh-Day Adventist Schools And Its Relationship To Commitment And Selected Work Conditions, Athanase K. Rutebuka Jan 1996

Job Satisfaction Among Teachers In Seventh-Day Adventist Schools And Its Relationship To Commitment And Selected Work Conditions, Athanase K. Rutebuka

Dissertations

Problem. The Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America has evidenced concerns over young people losing their commitment to the church, to SDA schools, and even to Christianity. Given the important role teachers play in the formation of young people, the purpose of this study was to determine the degree of teachers' job satisfaction and its relationship to commitment and selected work conditions.

Method. The population for this study included 261 elementary- and secondary-school teachers employed by the Lake Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in 116 schools. A survey-research method was used to determine the degree of teachers' job satisfaction and …

A Case Study Comparison Of Brief Group Treatment And Brief Individual Treatment In The Modification Of Denial Among Child Sexual Abusers, John F. Ulrich Jan 1996

A Case Study Comparison Of Brief Group Treatment And Brief Individual Treatment In The Modification Of Denial Among Child Sexual Abusers, John F. Ulrich

Dissertations

Problem Statement. O'Donohue and Letourneau (1993) demonstrated success in modifying denial among child sexual abusers with brief group treatment when probable incarceration existed for subjects who did not admit. This current study replicated and enhanced their treatment model while omitting the adverse legal consequences for subjects remaining in denial. Brief individual therapy was used as a comparison treatment condition. Factors theoretically contributing to denial were explored.

Methodology. Ten subjects were evaluated as individual case studies in two non-randomly assigned treatment conditions. Five subjects received nine group therapy sessions and five received nine individual therapy sessions. Subjects were selected from …

Borman Expressway Atms Equipment Evaluation, J. V. Krogmeier, Kumares C. Sinha, Michael P. Fitz, Srinivas Peeta, Shimon Y. Nof Jan 1996

Borman Expressway Atms Equipment Evaluation, J. V. Krogmeier, Kumares C. Sinha, Michael P. Fitz, Srinivas Peeta, Shimon Y. Nof

JTRP Technical Reports

An Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) is under development in northern Indiana by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) in conjunction with Hughes Transportation Management Systems. The study area comprises a sixteen mile segment of the heavily used Borman Expressway and its associated corridor; beginning at the Indiana/Illinois border and stretching east to the Indiana Toll Road interchange. The most important operational problem on the Borman is non-recurrent congestion, arising primarily through accidents and stalled vehicles. In order to mitigate the significant bottleneck delay problems due to non-recurrent congestion, INDOT is developing an ATMS for real-time incident detection and response …

Moral Orientation, Ego Maturity, And Religious Commitment : An Exploratory Study From A Developmental Perspective, Penelope Anne Webster Jan 1996

Moral Orientation, Ego Maturity, And Religious Commitment : An Exploratory Study From A Developmental Perspective, Penelope Anne Webster

Dissertations

Problem. Although moral development research has focused extensively on Kohlberg's moral judgment theory and Gilligan's considerations of moral orientation, little has directly addressed the issue of integration of the voices of care and justice. This study proposed that, with maturation, a more integrated moral orientation would guide moral decision making. Integration and the impact of age, gender, ego maturity, and religious commitment were examined from a developmental perspective.

Method. A cross-sectional design was employed, with adults from two age cohorts (25-35 and 50-65). A semi-structured interview (Brown, Debold, Tappan, & Gilligan, 1991) was used to collect data. Each individual …

The Desegregation Of Intercollegiate Athletics In The State Of Florida, David Thomas Bruce Jan 1996

The Desegregation Of Intercollegiate Athletics In The State Of Florida, David Thomas Bruce

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The desegregation of intercollegiate athletics in the state of Florida during the late 1960s was characteristic of a regional trend in Southern colleges and sports toward an increasing level of racial interaction. While the rather belated recruitment of African-American athletes by Florida colleges appeared anachronistic in the national setting, this delay typified the Southern white resistance to dismantling the institution of segregation. However, the desire to create a nationally ranked or competitive team created an atmosphere advantageous to desegregating Florida's intercollegiate athletic programs. Quite simply, if Florida colleges wanted to create competitive teams then they needed talented athletes, even if …

Estimating Statewide Trip Tables From Vehicle Classification Counts, James Yang, Jon D. Fricker Jan 1996

Estimating Statewide Trip Tables From Vehicle Classification Counts, James Yang, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

Although a statewide trip table is an important ingredient in the statewide planning process, such information is difficult to obtain. The study described in this report investigated the applicability to the state-level problem of existing software developed to estimate trip tables in urban areas (or smaller) from link counts. Criteria that would form the basis for determining the applicability of any particular software package were developed. Packages such as The Highway Emulator (THE), PC-LINKOD, and Fast Matrix Calibration (FMC) were tested using small and medium sized networks. Because FMC performed the best on these tests, it was applied to the …

Environmental Bioassay Evaluation Of Foundry Waste Residuals, Kenneth Chad Bastian, James E. Alleman Jan 1996

Environmental Bioassay Evaluation Of Foundry Waste Residuals, Kenneth Chad Bastian, James E. Alleman

JTRP Technical Reports

Although the constructive reuse of foundry residuals represents a decidedly beneficial goal with distinct economic and environmental benefits, potential end-users are nonetheless reluctant to use these residuals, given an inherent concern about potential unforeseen environmental liabilities. Results of foundry residual leachate characterization to date strongly suggest that many ferrous foundries are discarding sands whose quality is fully amenable to their future use with embankment construction and related high-volume highway development activities. In order to provide additional assurance as to the environmental impact of foundry residual reuse, the MicrotoxTM bioassay has been used to quantify the response of living organisms (e.g., …

Remediation Of Hazardous Effluent Emitted From Beneath Newly Constructed Road Systems And Clogging Of Underdrain Systems, Ronald Fred Wukasch, Adil Siddiqui Jan 1996

Remediation Of Hazardous Effluent Emitted From Beneath Newly Constructed Road Systems And Clogging Of Underdrain Systems, Ronald Fred Wukasch, Adil Siddiqui

JTRP Technical Reports

The Indiana Department of Transportation uses recycled concrete pavement as aggregate for the construction of highways. The effluent from these pavements has a high pH. The high pH effluent can cause clogging of drains and vegetative kill around the outlet. This project looks into the source of the effluent water, its chemical composition and the approximate duration the problem can be expected to persist. The project also investigates possible methods for reduction of the problem in future installation. The approximate additional cost of these solutions and the problems associated with them are discussed as well.

A Descriptive Case Study Of Staff Development In Two Seventh-Day Adventist Districts As They Relate To Potential Change, Michael G. England Jan 1996

A Descriptive Case Study Of Staff Development In Two Seventh-Day Adventist Districts As They Relate To Potential Change, Michael G. England

Dissertations

Problem. Leadership at the superintendent level is paramount in the process of change in Seventh-day Adventist schools. The superintendent/education director of state-sized districts, known as conferences, is responsible for staff development programs. How a superintendent performs his or her duties in the area of staff development is the focus of this study.

Purpose. The purpose of this study is to describe staff development programs of two Seventh-day Adventist districts who have a reputation for being "active" in promoting staff development among their teachers. I wanted to know what the superintendents of these districts were doing in this "active" mode of …

The Empirical Development Of An Instructional Product On The Religion Of Islam From A Missiological Perspective, Raja D. Farah Jan 1996

The Empirical Development Of An Instructional Product On The Religion Of Islam From A Missiological Perspective, Raja D. Farah

Dissertations

Problem. There is considerable misunderstanding in the contemporary world about the religion of Islam. Its swift growth has been a challenge to Christianity, and efforts to share Christ's message with Muslims have been relatively fruitless. The purpose of this study was to prepare a pedagogical module to instruct Seventh-day Adventist college students about the fundamental beliefs and practices of Islam. Topics include the Judaistic and Islamic heritage, Jesus and Muhammad, Islamic fundamentalism, Islamic marriage and family, the Muslim worldview, and practical Christian channels of missionary outreach to Muslims.

Method. The methodology of this instructional product development followed the pattern of …

The Empirical Development Of A Curriculum On The Issues Concerning The History Of Ancient Israel, Ruzica Gregor Jan 1996

The Empirical Development Of A Curriculum On The Issues Concerning The History Of Ancient Israel, Ruzica Gregor

Dissertations

Problem. An understanding of Israel's history is crucial to a Christian view of history, including its morals and values, and is a foundation stone of most conservative Christians including Seventh-day Adventists and their religious educational philosophy. There is a vital need for a curriculum that provides reasonable answers to the most frequently asked questions about Israel's early history and builds a solid base for the Christian/Adventist faith. The purpose of this study was to meet this need by empirically developing a curriculum for religion majors in Seventh-day Adventist colleges. Issues discussed include the Philosophical Background and Importance of History; the …
