Leaf Gas Exchange And Growth Of Flood-Tolerant And Flood-Sensitive Tree Species Under Low Soil Redox Conditions, S. R. Pezeshki, J. H. Pardue, R. D. Delaune

Faculty Publications

Seedlings of Taxodium distichum L., Quercus lyrata Walt. and Q. falcata var. pagodaefolia Ell. were grown for 22 days in a rhizotron system providing two soil redox potential regimes, +170 mV (low Eh) and +560 mV (high Eh). Leaf chlorophyll concentration and gas exchange, root alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity, root and leaf ethylene production, and growth and biomass partitioning were measured. In response to the low Eh soil treatment, stomatal conductance was reduced in Q. falcata and Q. lyrata but not in T. distichum, whereas net photosynthesis was reduced significantly in all species; however, net photosynthesis in T. distichum began …

Lawyering In Canada In The 21st Century, Harry W. Arthurs Jan 1996

Lawyering In Canada In The 21st Century, Harry W. Arthurs

Articles & Book Chapters

Legal practise is shaped by its social, political and economic environment. Canada's "new economy" of decreasing state regulation, globalization, computerization and changes in information technology, and the shift from manufacturing to the service sector has grave - largely negative - implications for the future of law and lawyers. Moreover, the profession is fragmented and stratified. It comprises multiple constituencies - solo practitioners, large corporate firms and specialists - with differing demographies and professional roles, which are implicated in varying degrees in the "new economy". As a result, they experience the restructuring of professional knowledge, governance, ethics and culture in ways …

Forging Responsible Unions: Metal Workers And The Rise Of The Labour Injunction In Canada, Eric Tucker, Judy Fudge Jan 1996

Forging Responsible Unions: Metal Workers And The Rise Of The Labour Injunction In Canada, Eric Tucker, Judy Fudge

Articles & Book Chapters

At the turn of the century, the legislative, administrative, and judicial branches of the Canadian state responded to the labour conflicts associated with the second industrial revolution by simultaneously expanding both their coercive and their facilitative roles. This paper examines one aspect of this development, the rise of the labour injunction, through a study of a series of strikes conducted chiefly by metal workers in south central Ontario between 1900 and 1914. In addition to retrieving the largely forgotten genealogy of a body of law that continues to play an important role in regulating and containing trade union activity, the …

Modeling The Vertical Distribution Of Oyster Larvae In Response To Environmental Conditions, Margaret M. Dekshenieks, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck, Eric N. Powell Jan 1996

Modeling The Vertical Distribution Of Oyster Larvae In Response To Environmental Conditions, Margaret M. Dekshenieks, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck, Eric N. Powell

CCPO Publications

A size-structured, time and vertically-dependent model was used to investigate the effects of water column structure on the distribution of larvae of the oyster Crassostrea virginica. Formulations used to model larval growth and behavior are based upon laboratory studies. Simulated vertical larval distributions obtained for conditions representative of a well-mixed, partially stratified and strongly stratified water column illustrate the effect that salinity and temperature gradients have on moderating larval swimming and hence on larvae vertical location. For well-mixed conditions, smaller larvae are dispersed throughout most of the water column. For strongly stratified conditions, the smaller-sized larvae cluster within the …

Circulation Near Submarine Canyons: A Modeling Study, John M. Klinck Jan 1996

Circulation Near Submarine Canyons: A Modeling Study, John M. Klinck

CCPO Publications

Circulation near a submarine canyon is analyzed with a numerical model. Previous theoretical work indicated that stratification controlled the interaction of coastal flow with canyons, specifically, the ratio of canyon width to the internal radius of deformation. A wide canyon was thought to merely steer the flow, while a narrow canyon would create substantial cross-shelf exchange. Four cases are analyzed considering two directions of alongshore flow and two choices of initial stratification. The weakly stratified case has an internal radius about equal to the canyon width, while the strongly stratified case has one about 3 times the canyon width. The …

Finite Dimensional Attractors For A Class Of Semilinear Wave Equations, A. Eden, V. Kalantarov Jan 1996

Finite Dimensional Attractors For A Class Of Semilinear Wave Equations, A. Eden, V. Kalantarov

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we give a self-contained survey of results related with the global attractors for a class of nonlinear wave equations with damping or viscosity terms. In particular, we prove the existence of a finite dimensional attractor and estimate its fractal dimension by imbedding it in an exponential attractor. Some results on global stability, existence of finite dimensional attractors were already partially discussed in Kalantarov [44] and in Eden et. al. [25], however we simplify the framework by introducing a unified approach to both the existence of attractors through \alpha-contractions and the construction of exponential attractors via some Lipschitzianity …

Automatic Correlation And Calibration Of Noisy Sensor Readings Using Elite Genetic Algorithms, R. R. Brooks, S. S. Iyengar, J. Chen Jan 1996

Automatic Correlation And Calibration Of Noisy Sensor Readings Using Elite Genetic Algorithms, R. R. Brooks, S. S. Iyengar, J. Chen

Faculty Publications

This paper explores an image processing application of optimization techniques which entails interpreting noisy sensor data. The application is a generalization of image correlation; we attempt to find the optimal gruence which matches two overlapping gray scale images corrupted with noise. Both tabu search and genetic algorithms are used to find the parameters which match the two images. A genetic algorithm approach using an elitist reproduction scheme is found to provide significantly superior results.

The Role Of Interference In Metacognitive Monitoring, Katherine M Jacobi Jan 1996

The Role Of Interference In Metacognitive Monitoring, Katherine M Jacobi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Recent advancements in neuropsychology have initiated theoretical advancements in cognitive psychology, particularly concerning the constructs of interference and metacognition. These constructs share similar cognitive functioning and this study investigated the relationship between them. It was expected that students with higher monitoring ability would demonstrate lower susceptibility to interference. Students from undergraduate Educational Psychology classes were administered three tests: two measures of interference, and one measure of metacognitive monitoring ability. Variables from the Wisconsin Card Sort Test (WCST) and the Stroop Color and Word Test (SCWT) measured susceptibility to interference. A monitoring task applied to a math aptitude test was used …

A Cross-National Comparison Of Consumers' Attitudes Toward Direct Marketing And Purchase Intention, Srinivas Durvasula, Syed H. Akhter, Gary J. Bamossy Jan 1996

A Cross-National Comparison Of Consumers' Attitudes Toward Direct Marketing And Purchase Intention, Srinivas Durvasula, Syed H. Akhter, Gary J. Bamossy

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Existing research indicates that attitudes toward the three elements of direct marketing (the source, mode, and response channel) influence consumers' intentions to purchase directly marketed products. While research investigating attitudes and consumers' response has been conducted in the U.S., there has been no research to date which examines attitude structures and purchase intentions towards direct marketing in a multi-country setting, in spite of the standardized global efforts of direct marketeers. This study presents findings on attitude structures regarding direct marketing for three affluent open markets, the U.S., Singapore, and the Netherlands and empirically investigates the relationships between these consumers' attitudes …

Screening Water Diversions For Fish Protection: A Survey Of Policy, Practices, And Compliance In The Pacific Northwest, James D. Crammond Jan 1996

Screening Water Diversions For Fish Protection: A Survey Of Policy, Practices, And Compliance In The Pacific Northwest, James D. Crammond

Animal Law Review

Unscreened surface water diversions damage and kill young fish. The decline of anadromous fish stocks in the Columbia Basin puts a premium on protection of juvenile salmon. State laws require screens on surface water diversions, but compliance has been poor. The Endangered Species Act and the Northwest Power Act have motivated and funded a massive remedial screening effort since 1991. Effective screens, installed with ratepayer and taxpayer funds, have dramatically improved fish protection at diversions. However, many harmful diversions remain. This paper concludes that, although progress has been swift, full compliance in 1996 is problematic. Greater incentives and enforcement are …

Between The Flood And The Rainbow: Our Covenant To Protect The Whole Of Creation, Bruce Babbitt Jan 1996

Between The Flood And The Rainbow: Our Covenant To Protect The Whole Of Creation, Bruce Babbitt

Animal Law Review

As Congress weighs the interests of landowners against the environment, the future of the Endangered Species Act may be in peril. Secretary Babbitt discusses the success of our environmental laws and urges recognition of the moral, ethical, and religious values underlying the Endangered Species Act. These values manifest themselves in a wolf's green eyes, a sacred blue mountain, the words from Genesis, and the answers of children. These considerations should lead us to the conclusion that we are responsible for the whole of creation.

Beyond The Law: Agribusiness And The Systemic Abuse Of Animals Raised For Food Or Food Production, David J. Wolfson Jan 1996

Beyond The Law: Agribusiness And The Systemic Abuse Of Animals Raised For Food Or Food Production, David J. Wolfson

Animal Law Review

Animals raised for food or food production in the United States are, in large part, excluded from legal protection against cruelty. This article describes the minimal state and federal laws relating to such animals and documents numerous recent amendments to state anticruelty statutes that have placed the definition of cruelty to farm animals in the hands of the farming community. Mr. Wolfson argues that these amendments contradict the historical purpose of anticruelty statutes originally enacted to protect farm animals. The article also contrasts this regressive legal development with progressive European legislation. Finally, Mr. Wolfson outlines a path for reform.

Semantic Correlation Of Behavior For The Interoperability Of Heterogeneous Simulations, Christopher James Dean Jan 1996

Semantic Correlation Of Behavior For The Interoperability Of Heterogeneous Simulations, Christopher James Dean

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A desirable goal of military simulation training is to provide large scale or joint exercises to train personnel at higher echelons. To help meet this goal, many of the lower echelon combatants must consist of computer generated forces with some of these echelons composed of units from different simulations. The object of the research described is to correlate the behaviors of entities in different simulations so that they can interoperate with one another to support simulation training. Specific source behaviors can be translated to a form in terms of general behaviors which can then be correlated to any desired specific …
