Quasi-Phase Matched Surface Emitting Second Harmonic Generation In Poled Polymer Waveguides, A. Otomo, G. I. Stegeman, W. H. G. Horsthuis, G. R. Möhlmann

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Quasi-phase matched (QPM) surface emitting second harmonic generation was demonstrated with nonlinear/linear multilayer waveguides in poled polymer based devices. The nonlinear/linear multilayer film was fabricated with a 4-dimethylamino-4'-nitrostilbene (DANS) side chain polymer and a cross-linkable clear polymer. Large efficiency improvement was observed with a combination of QPM and strong field parallel poling.

Scanning Heterodyne Optical Interferometers, Nabeel A. Riza Jan 1996

Scanning Heterodyne Optical Interferometers, Nabeel A. Riza

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Compact, high performance, scanning heterodyne optical interferometers are introduced for interferometric phase-based measurement applications. The novel, in-line, almost common-path optical interferometer design offers robustness to externally induced phase noise via mechanical vibrations, thermal effects, and other environmental effects. Novel instrument designs are introduced for both transmissive and reflective interferometry. These instruments use acousto-optic devices or Bragg cells to implement rapid (e.g., /scan spot) optical scanning of the test medium. Although the read optical beam scans a given test region, the double Bragg diffraction optical design of the instrument makes the final interfering output beams stationary on the two high speed …

Ab Initio Calculation For Low-Energy Elastic Scattering Of Electrons From Chlorine Atoms, H. P. Saha Jan 1996

Ab Initio Calculation For Low-Energy Elastic Scattering Of Electrons From Chlorine Atoms, H. P. Saha

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We have performed ab initio calculations of scattering length, differential, total, and momentum-transfer cross sections for elastic scattering of electrons from open-shell atoms; in particular, the chlorine atom. The polarization of chlorine atoms due to the scattered electrons and the electron correlation effects that are very important in the calculation are taken into account through the configuration-interaction procedure using the multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock method for continuum wave functions. Phase shifts for various partial waves calculated in this approximation have been used to calculate elastic differential, total elastic, and momentum-transfer cross sections for low energies ranging from 0-27.2 eV. The scattering length …

Effects Of Mode Structure On Three-Dimensional Laser Heating Due To Single Or Multiple Rectangular Laser Beams, A. Kar, J. E. Scott, W. P. Latham Jan 1996

Effects Of Mode Structure On Three-Dimensional Laser Heating Due To Single Or Multiple Rectangular Laser Beams, A. Kar, J. E. Scott, W. P. Latham

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The natural shape of a typical chemical oxygen-iodine laser (COIL) beam is rectangular which means that the transverse cross section of the beam is rectangular. Such a rectangular beam can be split into two or more beams to carry out materials processing. The distance between such beams and the mode structure in the beams can affect the distribution of heat in the workpiece. This, in turn, affects the quality and efficiency of materials processing. A three-dimensional quasi-steady-state thermal model is presented in this article, and an expression for the temperature distribution during laser heating with single or multiple COIL beams …

Modeling The Post-Burn-In Abnormal Base Current In Algaas/Gaas Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors, S. Sheu, J. J. Liou, C. I. Huang, D. C. Williamson Jan 1996

Modeling The Post-Burn-In Abnormal Base Current In Algaas/Gaas Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors, S. Sheu, J. J. Liou, C. I. Huang, D. C. Williamson

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The base current of AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistor subjected to a long burn-in test often exhibits an abnormal characteristic with an ideality factor of about 3, rather than a normal ideality factor between 1 and 2, in the midvoltage range, We develope an analytical model to investigate the physical mechanisms underlying such a characteristic. Consistent with the finding of an experimental work reported recently, our model calculations show that the recombination current in the base has an ideality factor of about 3 in the midvoltage range and that such a current is responsible for the observed abnormal base current in …

Dielectric Screening In The Thomas-Fermi Model, B. K. Shivamoggi, P. Mulser Jan 1996

Dielectric Screening In The Thomas-Fermi Model, B. K. Shivamoggi, P. Mulser

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

In this paper, we investigate the dielectric screening process in the Thomas-Fermi model with several variations such as the thermal effects, relativistic effects, motion of the test charge, and the effect of a very strong magnetic field. Comparisons are made with the corresponding results in a classical plasma. Some apparently anomalous results are pointed out and explained.

Dielectric Screening In A Plasma: Some Rigorous Results, Bhimsen K. Shivamoggi Jan 1996

Dielectric Screening In A Plasma: Some Rigorous Results, Bhimsen K. Shivamoggi

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

In this article, we give some rigorous results about the properties of the solution of Poisson's equation describing dielectric screening by electrons trapped and/or untrapped in the Coulomb field of the test charge.

Studies On Ara-C-Induced Dna Damage And Apoptosis In Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells Which Overexpress P26bcl-2, Gloria Joan Bullock Jan 1996

Studies On Ara-C-Induced Dna Damage And Apoptosis In Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells Which Overexpress P26bcl-2, Gloria Joan Bullock

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

High expression of p26Bcl-2 in patient-derived AML cells has been associated with poor response to chemotherapy including Ara-C. It has been well established that Bcl-2 over expression blocks apoptosis or programmed cell death induced by a wide variety of stimuli including chemotherapeutic drugs. However, the exact mechanism of action of Bcl-2 in promoting this blockade is still largely unknown. To determine the types of Ara-C-induced DNA damage with which Bcl-2 specifically interferes, HL-60/neo and HL-60/Bcl-2 cells were created via retroviral-mediated transfection of the bcl-2 gene. These transfectants served as in vitro AML cell models that expressed different levels of p26Bcl-2. …

Constitutional Mass Torts: Sovereign Immunity And The Human Radiation Experiments (Note), Nestor M. Davidson Jan 1996

Constitutional Mass Torts: Sovereign Immunity And The Human Radiation Experiments (Note), Nestor M. Davidson

Faculty Scholarship

Part I of this Note explains why the present system does not allow individuals to recover damages against the federal government for violations of the Constitution. It first describes the doctrine of constitutional torts and its limitations. It then discusses sovereign immunity, and explains that Congress has retained sovereign immunity for constitutional torts. It concludes with a discussion of the Supreme Court's policy arguments for not creating a cause of action against the government for constitutional violations. Part II explores the Human Radiation Experiments as a case study in the remedial gaps created by the current scope of Bivens and …

Investigation Into The Use Of The World Wide Web As An Interface For Distributing Electronic Documents To And From A Remote Digital Color Printing Site, Ronald J. Recene

Theses

The World Wide Web and Internet are the most talked-about and fastest-growing mediums for information and electronic document distribution. Their growth has, and will continue to have, a great impact on all forms of media, due to their potential to reach millions of individuals. This project demonstrates the capabilities of the World Wide Web to perform, not only as a publishing vehicle, but as a means for communication and document distribution to a digital color printing facility. In order to show this, a Web site was built that incorporated the utilities needed for the successful exchange of data, such as …
