Research Productivity And Positive Teaching Evaluations: Examining The Relationship Using Meta-Analysis, Mike Allen Jan 1996

Research Productivity And Positive Teaching Evaluations: Examining The Relationship Using Meta-Analysis, Mike Allen

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article reports on the importance of research as a standard for tenure and merit for college professors. The reasons for increasing the emphasis on research are probably several and varied depending on the various internal pressures of the institution. Another issue involves the separation that a research emphasis creates between the student and the instructor. The alternative line of argument suggests a connection between research productivity and teaching quality. Research shows not only knowledge but shows a dedication to the content and material not possible for a person that only teaches.

Censorship Of The Collegiate Presses, Serjit Kasior, Ed Darrah Jan 1996

Censorship Of The Collegiate Presses, Serjit Kasior, Ed Darrah

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

An essay on the effects censorship policies being implemented by the U.S. government on rulings made by the judiciary system. There are those who still refuse to accept the fact that the U.S. judiciary system has determined both students and faculty members have the constitutional right to express their individual or collective thoughts to all people within or outside of their communities. Censorship has been imposed upon university student newspapers throughout the country despite the aforementioned U.S. federal judiciary rulings. Administration-sponsored censorship policies have been instituted by those refusing to accept the fact that bad news occurs on their campuses.

A Response To "A Description Of Merger Applied To The Montana State University Context", Jeff Baker Jan 1996

A Response To "A Description Of Merger Applied To The Montana State University Context", Jeff Baker

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article presents a comment on the study A Description of Merger Applied to the Montana State University Context. In simplest terms, the university system merger was designed to accomplish greater unity and effect economies of scale while guarding against mission drift. Change is disruptive but also productive if effected properly. Ultimately, restructuring success will be measured less by an organizational chart and more on our ability to build public trust, confidence and ownership in higher education.

Let's Get Political: Strategies For Departmental Survival And Growth, Isa N. Engleberg Jan 1996

Let's Get Political: Strategies For Departmental Survival And Growth, Isa N. Engleberg

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article reports on the seminar entitled Strengthening the Unit: Strategies for Survival and Growth, sponsored by the Association for Communication Administration (ACA). The ACA seminar on Strengthening the Unit raised the above question given recent threats to abolish or cut well-established and prestigious communication departments. The ACA seminar provided an opportunity for representatives from threatened departments to tell their stories and share their hard-learned lessons. Strong leadership is critical to a department's survival and growth. Asking faculty members to make professional development a priority is a hollow request if the leader is not an active professional. Strong and politically …

Strategies For The Communications Unit: How Can We Become Central To The University And Its Mission?, Ellen Wartella Jan 1996

Strategies For The Communications Unit: How Can We Become Central To The University And Its Mission?, Ellen Wartella

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article presents the author's comments on reasons for the perception that communication units are not central to the University and its mission. First, our name itself is a problem. This can mean that one studies mass media, as I do, or it may refer to scholars of interpersonal communication, rhetorical analysis, cultural studies, organizational studies, or a variety of other subspecialties. Second, this lack of unity and intellectual diversity, often poses special political problems. The political battles across communication programs on campuses is only one of our on-campus political problems. Finally, perhaps at the root of our battles about …

Communication Curriculum Reform, Liberal Arts Components And Administrative Organization, Keith L. Williamson, Sharon Hartin Iorio Jan 1996

Communication Curriculum Reform, Liberal Arts Components And Administrative Organization, Keith L. Williamson, Sharon Hartin Iorio

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article investigates the substance and level of importance placed on liberal arts as elements within the communication curriculum and whether the definition and significance of these liberal arts elements change according to the emphasis of different communication programs. To explore the nature and extent of the curriculum, the article reviewed communication programs through a survey of the membership of two organizations, the Association of Communication Administrators and the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication. Prior to the analysis of the findings, academic literature are reviewed to provide a discussion of the history surrounding the organization, curricula, and …

Site-Selective Excitation And Polarized Absorption Spectra Of Nd3+ In Sr-5(Po4)(3)F And Ca-5(Po4)(3)F, John B. Gruber, Clyde A. Morrison, Michael D. Seltzer, Andrew O. Wright, Melvin P. Nadler, Toomas H. Allik, J. Andrew Hutchinson, Bruce H. T. Chai Jan 1996

Site-Selective Excitation And Polarized Absorption Spectra Of Nd3+ In Sr-5(Po4)(3)F And Ca-5(Po4)(3)F, John B. Gruber, Clyde A. Morrison, Michael D. Seltzer, Andrew O. Wright, Melvin P. Nadler, Toomas H. Allik, J. Andrew Hutchinson, Bruce H. T. Chai

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Polarized absorption and fluorescence spectra were analyzed to establish individual energy (Stark) levels of Nd3+ ions in host crystals of Sr-5(PO4)(3)F (SFAP) and Ca-5(PO4)(3)F (FAP). Site-selective excitation and fluorescence facilitated differentiation between Nd3+ ions in emitting sites-associated with 1.06 mu m stimulated emission, and nonemitting Nd3+ ions in other sites. Measurements were made on samples containing different concentrations of Nd3+ at 4 K and higher temperatures. Substitution of Nd3+ for Sr2+ or Ca2+ was accompanied by passive charge compensation during crystal growth. Crystal-field splitting calculations were performed according to site for Stark levels of Nd3+ ions identified spectroscopically. We obtained …

Comparison Of Quasi-Phase-Matching Geometries For Second-Harmonic Generation In Poled Polymer Channel Waveguides At 1.5 Mu M, M. Jäger, G. I. Stegeman, W. Brinker, S. Yilmaz, S. Bauer, W. H. G. Horsthuis, G. R. Möhlmann Jan 1996

Comparison Of Quasi-Phase-Matching Geometries For Second-Harmonic Generation In Poled Polymer Channel Waveguides At 1.5 Mu M, M. Jäger, G. I. Stegeman, W. Brinker, S. Yilmaz, S. Bauer, W. H. G. Horsthuis, G. R. Möhlmann

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We have investigated three different quasi-phase-matching approaches to second-harmonic generation (SHG) in DANS (4-dimethylamino-4'-nitrostilbene) poled polymer channel waveguides at 1.5 mu m. Periodic photobleaching and periodically poled electrodes deposited directly on the film produced unacceptably high propagation losses. However, periodic electrodes on the substrate gave low losses and useful SHG.

Modal Dispersion Phase Matching Over 7 Mm Length In Overdamped Polymeric Channel Waveguides, Matthias Jäger, George I. Stegeman, Marinus C. Flipse, Mart Diemeer, Guus Möhlmann Jan 1996

Modal Dispersion Phase Matching Over 7 Mm Length In Overdamped Polymeric Channel Waveguides, Matthias Jäger, George I. Stegeman, Marinus C. Flipse, Mart Diemeer, Guus Möhlmann

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Phase-matched second harmonic generation over 7 mm is demonstrated using the modal dispersion of a composite 4-dimethylamino-4'-nitrostilbene/polyetherimde channel waveguide. For a l-mm-long sample a record figure of merit for polymers of eta=P-2 omega/(P(omega)L(2))=14%/W cm(2) was measured at 1550 nm. This is comparable to the value reported for LiNbO3 at that wavelength. The efficiency in longer samples is limited by fundamental and harmonic waveguide-losses.

Natural Widths In Open-Shell Atoms: The K Absorption Spectrum Of Atomic Oxygen, A. Menzel, S. Benzaid, M. O. Krause, C. D. Caldwell, U. Hergenhahn, M. Bissen Jan 1996

Natural Widths In Open-Shell Atoms: The K Absorption Spectrum Of Atomic Oxygen, A. Menzel, S. Benzaid, M. O. Krause, C. D. Caldwell, U. Hergenhahn, M. Bissen

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Total-ion-yield measurements and Hartree-Fock calculations are presented for the 1s-- >np, n=2 to 5 photoexcitations in atomic oxygen. Energies and relative intensities of the [1s]2s(2)2p(4)(P-4)np and [1s]2s(2)2p(4)(P-2)np series members are determined, and the apparent linewidths are measured. It is shown that natural widths in an open-shell atom can be deduced from an absorption spectrum only with the aid of theoretical input. The linewidth for the six individual components contained in the 1s-->2p transition is determined to be 140(9) meV.

Partial Photoionization Cross Sections And Photoelectron Angular Distributions For Double Excitations Up To The N=5 Threshold In Helium, A. Menzel, S. P. Frigo, S. B. Whitfield, C. D. Caldwell, M. O. Krause Jan 1996

Partial Photoionization Cross Sections And Photoelectron Angular Distributions For Double Excitations Up To The N=5 Threshold In Helium, A. Menzel, S. P. Frigo, S. B. Whitfield, C. D. Caldwell, M. O. Krause

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Partial photoionization cross sections sigma(n) and photoelectron angular distributions beta(n) were measured for all possible final ionic states He+(n) in the region of the double excitations N(K,T)(A) up to the N=5 threshold. At a photon energy bandpass of 12 meV below the thresholds N=3,4, and 5, this level of differentiation offers the most critical assessment of the dynamics of the two-electron excitations to date. The experimental data are very well described by the most advanced theoretical calculations. Weaker double-excitation series with K=N-4 are clearly visible in the beta(n) data, and even previously unobserved extremely weak series members with A=-1 can …

Key Trade-Offs For Second Harmonic Generation In Poled Polymers, Akira Otomo, Matthias Jäger, George I. Stegeman, Marinus C. Flipse, Mart Diemeer Jan 1996

Key Trade-Offs For Second Harmonic Generation In Poled Polymers, Akira Otomo, Matthias Jäger, George I. Stegeman, Marinus C. Flipse, Mart Diemeer

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We discuss the critical trade-off between the spectral dispersion in the second order nonlinearity d((2)) and the linear absorption coefficient for second harmonic generation (SHG) by the mixing of copropagating or counterpropagating fundamental beams in poled polymers. The 4-dimethylamino-4'-nitrostilbene side-chain polymer is used as a specific example. The predictive power of the classical two-level model for SHG is also assessed.

All-Optical Switching By Spatial Walkoff Compensation And Solitary-Wave Locking, William E. Torruellas, Gaetano Assanto, Brian L. Lawrence, Russell A. Fuerst, George I. Stegeman Jan 1996

All-Optical Switching By Spatial Walkoff Compensation And Solitary-Wave Locking, William E. Torruellas, Gaetano Assanto, Brian L. Lawrence, Russell A. Fuerst, George I. Stegeman

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We demonstrate a novel approach to phase insensitive, all-optical steering and switching based on an intensity-induced change in the propagation direction of multidimensional spatial solitary waves in bulk, birefringent, quadratic nonlinear media. Our demonstration is based on second-harmonic generation in a KTP crystal. Compensation for the lateral displacements due to walkoff in SHG is observed.

Thermal Stability Of Hydrogen In Lialo2 And Ligao2, R. G. Wilson, B. L. H. Chai, S. J. Pearton, C. R. Abernathy, F. Ren, J. M. Zavada Jan 1996

Thermal Stability Of Hydrogen In Lialo2 And Ligao2, R. G. Wilson, B. L. H. Chai, S. J. Pearton, C. R. Abernathy, F. Ren, J. M. Zavada

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Hydrogen as H-2 has been incorporated into LiAlO2 and LiGaO2 by both ion implantation and by exposure to a plasma at 250 degrees C. In the implanted samples, approximately 50% of the hydrogen is lost from the surface during annealing at 500 degrees C for 20 min, and essentially all is gone by 700 degrees C. This hydrogen retention is considerably less than for other materials that are being used as substrates for III-nitride epilayer growth, such as SiC and sapphire. The indiffusion of H-2 from a plasma is much faster for LiAlO2 with an apparent diffusivity at 250 degrees …

Vectorial Quadratic Interactions For All-Optical Signal Processing Via Second-Harmonic Generation, G. Assanto, D. J. Hagan, G. I. Stegeman, Eric W. Van Stryland, W. E. Torruellas Jan 1996

Vectorial Quadratic Interactions For All-Optical Signal Processing Via Second-Harmonic Generation, G. Assanto, D. J. Hagan, G. I. Stegeman, Eric W. Van Stryland, W. E. Torruellas

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Quadratic interactions involving three distinct waves can be exploited for all-optical signal processing both in the plane wave limit and in the spatial solitary-wave case. For the specific case of Type II Second-Harmonic Generation in bulk KTP, we have predicted and demonstrated all-optical transistor action with small signal gain and angular steering and switching of spatial simultons. All the phenomena rely exclusively on inputs at the same fundamental frequency.

Multisoliton Generation By Laser Modes In A Frequency Doubling Medium, Pascal Agin, George I. Stegeman Jan 1996

Multisoliton Generation By Laser Modes In A Frequency Doubling Medium, Pascal Agin, George I. Stegeman

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We demonstrate that the number of solitons generated by laser modes with multiple power maxima in a phase-matchable, second-order, nonlinear optical medium can be explained by a model based on field overlap and neighboring soliton interactions.

Autoionization And Interchannel Mixing In Atomic Fluorine: The 2p(4)(S-1)Ns,Md Rydberg Series, C. D. Caldwell, S. Benzaid, A. Menzel, M. O. Krause Jan 1996

Autoionization And Interchannel Mixing In Atomic Fluorine: The 2p(4)(S-1)Ns,Md Rydberg Series, C. D. Caldwell, S. Benzaid, A. Menzel, M. O. Krause

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Experimental data on the spectroscopic and dynamic properties of the 2p(4)(S-1)ns,md series between the D-1 and S-1 thresholds of atomic fluorine are presented. These series are observed through their decay into the allowed 2p(4)(P-3)epsilon l and 2p(4)(D-1) epsilon l ionization channels. The (S-1)ns S-2 resonances are broad windows, and the (S-1)md(2)D resonances are narrow peaks in the principal 2p(4)(D-1)epsilon l channel. The 2s2p(6) S-2 resonance is located at 20.99(1) eV and is seen to interact strongly with the nearby 2p(4)(S-1)4s S-2 resonance. The resulting structure can serve as a sensitive marker for this interchannel mixing. Except for the interacting resonances, …

Angular Distribution Of Decay Electrons From The 6p Resonance Excitations In Xenon, C. D. Caldwell, S. Hallman Jan 1996

Angular Distribution Of Decay Electrons From The 6p Resonance Excitations In Xenon, C. D. Caldwell, S. Hallman

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Angular distributions for the electrons produced by the decay of the 4d-->6p excitations in xenon have been measured using an undulator radiation source. The resolution employed in the experiment has allowed us to derive separate beta values for features which had not been isolated previously, as well as to determine beta values for previously unreported lines. Comparison is made between existing experimental and theoretical results.

Baby Universes In 4d Dynamical Triangulation, S. Catterall, J. Kogut, R. Renken, G. Thorleifsson

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We measure numerically the distribution of baby universes in the crumpled phase of the dynamical triangulation model of 4D quantum gravity. The relevance of the results to the issue of an exponential bound is discussed. The data are consistent with the existence of such a bound.

Integer Quantum Hall Effect For Hard-Core Bosons And A Failure Of Bosonic Chern-Simons Mean-Field Theories For Electrons At A Half-Filled Landau Level, O. Heinonen, M. D. Johnson Jan 1996

Integer Quantum Hall Effect For Hard-Core Bosons And A Failure Of Bosonic Chern-Simons Mean-Field Theories For Electrons At A Half-Filled Landau Level, O. Heinonen, M. D. Johnson

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Field-theoretical methods have been shown to be useful in constructing simple effective theories for two-dimensional (2D) systems. These effective theories are usually studied by perturbing around a mean-field approximation, so the question as to whether such an approximation is meaningful arises immediately. We here study 2D interacting electrons in a half-filled Landau level mapped onto interacting hard-core bosons in a magnetic field. We argue that an interacting hard-core boson system in a uniform external field such that there is one flux quantum per particle (unit filling) exhibits an integer quantum Hall effect. As a consequence, the mean-field approximation for mapping …

Area-Selective Disordering Of Multiple Quantum Well Structures And Its Applications To All-Optical Devices, Ayman M. Kan'an, Patrick Likamwa, Mitra Dutta, Jagadeesh Pamulapati Jan 1996

Area-Selective Disordering Of Multiple Quantum Well Structures And Its Applications To All-Optical Devices, Ayman M. Kan'an, Patrick Likamwa, Mitra Dutta, Jagadeesh Pamulapati

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

A technique of impurity-free vacancy-induced disordering of GaAs/AlGaAs multiquantum wells (MQW) that is area selective, very reliable, and highly reproducible, has been developed. The localized compositional disordering is induced by rapid thermal annealing of the sample after it has been coated with a thin film of ''spin-on'' glass and prebaked at 400 degrees C in a high purity nitrogen:oxygen (78:22) atmosphere. In order to self-consistently determine the diffusion coefficient of the Al and Ga atoms, the photoluminescence peak is fitted to the n=1 electron to heavy hole transition that corresponds to an error function potential profile caused by the diffusion. …

Quasi-Phase Matched Surface Emitting Second Harmonic Generation In Poled Polymer Waveguides, A. Otomo, G. I. Stegeman, W. H. G. Horsthuis, G. R. Möhlmann

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Quasi-phase matched (QPM) surface emitting second harmonic generation was demonstrated with nonlinear/linear multilayer waveguides in poled polymer based devices. The nonlinear/linear multilayer film was fabricated with a 4-dimethylamino-4'-nitrostilbene (DANS) side chain polymer and a cross-linkable clear polymer. Large efficiency improvement was observed with a combination of QPM and strong field parallel poling.

Scanning Heterodyne Optical Interferometers, Nabeel A. Riza Jan 1996

Scanning Heterodyne Optical Interferometers, Nabeel A. Riza

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Compact, high performance, scanning heterodyne optical interferometers are introduced for interferometric phase-based measurement applications. The novel, in-line, almost common-path optical interferometer design offers robustness to externally induced phase noise via mechanical vibrations, thermal effects, and other environmental effects. Novel instrument designs are introduced for both transmissive and reflective interferometry. These instruments use acousto-optic devices or Bragg cells to implement rapid (e.g., /scan spot) optical scanning of the test medium. Although the read optical beam scans a given test region, the double Bragg diffraction optical design of the instrument makes the final interfering output beams stationary on the two high speed …

Ab Initio Calculation For Low-Energy Elastic Scattering Of Electrons From Chlorine Atoms, H. P. Saha Jan 1996

Ab Initio Calculation For Low-Energy Elastic Scattering Of Electrons From Chlorine Atoms, H. P. Saha

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We have performed ab initio calculations of scattering length, differential, total, and momentum-transfer cross sections for elastic scattering of electrons from open-shell atoms; in particular, the chlorine atom. The polarization of chlorine atoms due to the scattered electrons and the electron correlation effects that are very important in the calculation are taken into account through the configuration-interaction procedure using the multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock method for continuum wave functions. Phase shifts for various partial waves calculated in this approximation have been used to calculate elastic differential, total elastic, and momentum-transfer cross sections for low energies ranging from 0-27.2 eV. The scattering length …
