Twelve Steps, You're Out (Of Prison): An Evaluation Of "Anonymous Programs" As Alternative Sentences, Ethan G. Kalett Jan 1996

Twelve Steps, You're Out (Of Prison): An Evaluation Of "Anonymous Programs" As Alternative Sentences, Ethan G. Kalett

UC Law Journal

America's increasingly aggressive anti-drug policies place extreme burdens on the courts, prisons, and probation programs. Yet despite these "zero tolerance" policies, drug addiction and alcoholism continue to rise. Recent evidence shows that addiction is a treatable condition, and that providing such treatment to certain types of convicted criminals can reduce recidivism. But providing such treatment can be time consuming and costly. Consequently, courts are taking increasing advantage of using Twelve Step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous as low-cost, readily available treatment alternatives.

This Note explores whether diverting criminals to Twelve Step programs adequately safeguards the needs and aims of the criminal …

A Child's Right To Be Gay: Addressing The Emotional Maltreatment Of Queer Youth, Sonia Renee Martin Jan 1996

A Child's Right To Be Gay: Addressing The Emotional Maltreatment Of Queer Youth, Sonia Renee Martin

UC Law Journal

Queer youth constitute an isolated and invisible population severely in need of help from all segments of society. They are harassed and rejected by their peers, the media, and the public in general. Queer youth are the most at-risk population of adolescents for suicide, homelessness, substance abuse, prostitution, and HIV infection. Most critically, queer youth often do not receive the necessary familial support needed to cope in such an environment. To the contrary, they are emotionally maltreated by their parents more often than any other group of adolescents.

The author asserts that it is imperative for the legal system to …

Effects Of Pyrolysis Heating Rate On Intrinsic Reactivities Of Coal Chars, Thomas K. Gale, Calvin H. Bartholomew, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 1996

Effects Of Pyrolysis Heating Rate On Intrinsic Reactivities Of Coal Chars, Thomas K. Gale, Calvin H. Bartholomew, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

The main objective of this work was to determine the effects of pyrolysis heating rate on intrinsic O2 reactivity of coal chars. Relationships of intrinsic reactivity to other pyrolysis conditions and char physical and chemical structure were also investigated, and empirical correlations were obtained. Two different entrained flow reactors (a flat flame methane/air burner and a drop tube reactor) were used to prepare chars under a variety of different pyrolysis conditions at maximum particle temperatures and heating rates of 840-1627 K and 104 to 2x105 K/s, respectively. Intrinsic reactivities of a lignite and two bituminous coal chars …

School Reform: Leadership Through Shared Decision-Making, Mary Juliet Martel Edd Jan 1996

School Reform: Leadership Through Shared Decision-Making, Mary Juliet Martel Edd

Dissertations

Educational reform has a long history and schools have gone through cycles of change. This study, however, focuses on the last ten years of reform, often referred to as the restructuring movement. Shared decision making is one of the fundamental changes promoted by this current reform effort. Restructuring the decision-making process to include teachers and parents is a significant change from the hierarchical process that has been in place in most of today's schools. It is time to recognize that schools are complex social institutions that experience change only through its people. By giving those closest to children a stronger …

An Evaluation Case Study Of The Effects Of A Learning Style Awareness Program For Ninth Graders At An Independent School, Dorene Casey Mclaughlin Edd

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the implementation of a year-long learning style awareness program and its effects on locus of control and academic achievement in a ninth grade population. This study was also designed to collect subjective data from students on their perceptions of responsibility for their own achievement, ability to identify their individual learning style, a willingness to ask for help, and in addition, over parental conflict. This study was conducted, using a sample of 76 ninth graders, at an independent college preparatory school in a large Southern California city. All subjects were administered the National …

The Wrath Of Ignorance: Schizophrenic Policies In Access To Health Care For Undocumented Latinas, Antonia J. Spadaro Edd Jan 1996

The Wrath Of Ignorance: Schizophrenic Policies In Access To Health Care For Undocumented Latinas, Antonia J. Spadaro Edd

Dissertations

This study focuses on the problems of health care access experienced by undocumented Latinas: women from Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Those who are undocumented may encounter significantly reduced access to health care, for the risk of discovery causes them to be more furtive in their activities. Undocumented immigrants to the U.S., especially Latin women, confront myriad obstacles in obtaining health care that are sociocultural, political, economic, and personal. The problem of competing policies in the health care arena represents one of the most formidable obstacles for undocumented persons. These conflicting conditions are such that some services …

See No Evil - The Role Of The Directed Trustee Under Erisa, Patricia W. Moore Jan 1996

See No Evil - The Role Of The Directed Trustee Under Erisa, Patricia W. Moore

Faculty Articles

Just before ERISA's passage, Congress added a provision allowing a sponsoring employer to use a "named fiduciary" – usually one or more of the employer's officers – to direct the trustee. In that case, the trustee is to "be subject to proper directions of such fiduciary which are made in accordance with the terms of the plan and which are not contrary to this Act." Such a trustee is commonly called a "directed trustee."

After ERISA became law, commentators immediately observed that section 403(a)(1) generated more questions than answers. For instance, is a directed trustee a "fiduciary" at all? Does …

Interest Rate Elasticity And Consumer Bank Accounts: A Case Analysis Of Bank One Dayton, N.A., William Paul Martin Jan 1996

Interest Rate Elasticity And Consumer Bank Accounts: A Case Analysis Of Bank One Dayton, N.A., William Paul Martin

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This study is an econometric analysis of three consumer banking accounts from Bank One Dayton, N.A., the Total Demand account, Total Savings account and Time Deposits Account. The elasticity of demand with respect to interest rates of the savings and time deposit accounts is determined using multiple regression modeling and analysis. Other variables that are significant determinants of the balances of each account are also presented.

An analysis of the regression results for the Time Deposits Model indicates that the demand for the Bank One Dayton time deposit accounts (certificate of deposit accounts) is significantly elastic with respect to interest …

Telecommunications And Economic Development, Mohammed Mahbubur Rahman Jan 1996

Telecommunications And Economic Development, Mohammed Mahbubur Rahman

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The thesis examines the relationship between telecommunications development and economic activity of nations. The findings confirm the previously established hypothesis that the causality of the relationship between these two factors exists in both directions. That is the development of economic activity at any point in time influences the development in telecommunications at a later point in time- and the development in telecommunications at any point in time also influences the economic activity at a later point in time. The major economic principle behind such significant correlation of telecommunications and economic development is that telecommunications helps reduce the transaction cost in …

Innovation In A Production Function By Combining Theory Of Constraints And Kanban Scheduling Techniques, David Charles Maley Jan 1996

Innovation In A Production Function By Combining Theory Of Constraints And Kanban Scheduling Techniques, David Charles Maley

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The following documents how I have been working to make agile manufacturing a reality at Whirlpool Corporation, the largest producer of home appliances in the world. Together with a Dayton, Ohio design team, I designed a quick response production process for a new range manufacturing plant. Several innovations made possible a significant improvement in manufacturing flexibility and order response time which will give the firm a competitive advantage in the market, leading to increased profits. The facility was constructed in Tulsa, Oklahoma and is now in production.

Dr. Eliyahu Goldratt's Theory of Constraints served as the foundation of the production …

Economic Growth Performance Of Selected Countries, Wuguang Yan Jan 1996

Economic Growth Performance Of Selected Countries, Wuguang Yan

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This paper reviews economic growth theories and studies the East - Asian economic growth characteristics. The descriptive analysis shows that the high performance Asian Economies(the HPAEs) have been experiencing continued rapid per capita income growth for over two decades. They have enjoyed the high savings rates, high investment rates, low population growth rates as well. The living standard of these countries tends more and more closer to the U.S. standard. Compare to the Latin American countries, the HPAEs’ achievement is very impressive.

The statistical analysis performed in this paper also offers the insights of the relationship between per capita GDP …

The Semblance Of Ideologies And Scientific Theories And The Constitution Of Facts, Rory J. Conces Jan 1996

The Semblance Of Ideologies And Scientific Theories And The Constitution Of Facts, Rory J. Conces

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Responding to those who want to consign ideologies to the dustbin of history, I make what is perhaps an unexpected connection between ideologies and scientific theories to ward off what may amount to be an assault on the former's cognitive value. Although there are significant differences between ideologies and scientific theories, particularly in terms of objectivity and openness to innovation, I find that they are similar insofar as each is a cognitive fund which allows us to make sense of the world that we live in. Part of the sense-making quality of scientific theories is that they allow us to …
