Innovation In A Production Function By Combining Theory Of Constraints And Kanban Scheduling Techniques, David Charles Maley Jan 1996

Innovation In A Production Function By Combining Theory Of Constraints And Kanban Scheduling Techniques, David Charles Maley

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The following documents how I have been working to make agile manufacturing a reality at Whirlpool Corporation, the largest producer of home appliances in the world. Together with a Dayton, Ohio design team, I designed a quick response production process for a new range manufacturing plant. Several innovations made possible a significant improvement in manufacturing flexibility and order response time which will give the firm a competitive advantage in the market, leading to increased profits. The facility was constructed in Tulsa, Oklahoma and is now in production.

Dr. Eliyahu Goldratt's Theory of Constraints served as the foundation of the production …

Economic Growth Performance Of Selected Countries, Wuguang Yan Jan 1996

Economic Growth Performance Of Selected Countries, Wuguang Yan

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This paper reviews economic growth theories and studies the East - Asian economic growth characteristics. The descriptive analysis shows that the high performance Asian Economies(the HPAEs) have been experiencing continued rapid per capita income growth for over two decades. They have enjoyed the high savings rates, high investment rates, low population growth rates as well. The living standard of these countries tends more and more closer to the U.S. standard. Compare to the Latin American countries, the HPAEs’ achievement is very impressive.

The statistical analysis performed in this paper also offers the insights of the relationship between per capita GDP …

The Semblance Of Ideologies And Scientific Theories And The Constitution Of Facts, Rory J. Conces Jan 1996

The Semblance Of Ideologies And Scientific Theories And The Constitution Of Facts, Rory J. Conces

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Responding to those who want to consign ideologies to the dustbin of history, I make what is perhaps an unexpected connection between ideologies and scientific theories to ward off what may amount to be an assault on the former's cognitive value. Although there are significant differences between ideologies and scientific theories, particularly in terms of objectivity and openness to innovation, I find that they are similar insofar as each is a cognitive fund which allows us to make sense of the world that we live in. Part of the sense-making quality of scientific theories is that they allow us to …

Community-Based Learning Projects For The "Real World", Chris Davis

Special Topics, General

As we walked down the street to the next-door elementary school, the I 5 high school juniors with me began reflecting on their elementary school experiences. They remembered the Dr. Seuss stories their teachers had read to them, the art projects, the time to play, the time to just be kids. Life was simpler and more fun then, they all agreed.

Now school mostly means sitting at desks and listening to teachers talk for a large portion of the day. And when teachers aren't talking to them, they take tests, read a textbook chapter, write on a ditto, watch a …

How Rigid Is The Stable Interior Of The North American Plate?, Timothy H. Dixon, Ailin Mao, Seth Stein Jan 1996

How Rigid Is The Stable Interior Of The North American Plate?, Timothy H. Dixon, Ailin Mao, Seth Stein

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

We analyze data from eight permanent GPS stations broadly distributed through the interior of the North American plate, and use the resulting velocities to estimate an Euler vector describing motion of “stable” North America as a single rigid plate. The site velocities fit the single plate model with a mean residual of 1.3 mm/yr. The residuals do not appear to reflect post-glacial rebound, and tests for differential motion between eastern and western North America at the New Madrid seismic zone show no resolvable motion within uncertainties. The residuals likely reflect observational error, and thus our estimate of the stability of …

Term Limits On Original Intent--An Essay On Legal Debate And Historical Understanding, Polly J. Price Jan 1996

Term Limits On Original Intent--An Essay On Legal Debate And Historical Understanding, Polly J. Price

Faculty Articles

This Essay is divided into five Parts. Part I sets the stage for the historical debate by evaluating the text of the Qualifications Clauses as well as the limited evidence of what the Framers and the ratifiers thought about these provisions. Part II shows that many states, immediately after the federal Constitution was ratified, behaved as though the Qualifications Clauses did not prevent them from adding qualifications for congressional office-holding. Part III compares this early evidence of state behavior with a debate in Congress after the Civil War concerning the meaning of the Qualifications Clauses. Part IV returns to the …

Minimum Ventilation For Modern Broiler Facilities, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, Shuhui H. Zhang Jan 1996

Minimum Ventilation For Modern Broiler Facilities, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, Shuhui H. Zhang

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

New functions for whole-house broiler heat production as a function of bird age using modern straight run broiler growth rates are presented and compared to values in the literature. The approximations are based on field measurements of environmental conditions in modern broiler housing, using a technique that matches predicted to actual fuel use to estimate partitioning between latent and sensible heat. Development of a program utilizing these approximations to compute ventilation and heating requirements for temperature and humidity control in broiler housing is described. The program utilizes steady-state heat and moisture balances commonly used for design purposes, with hourly or …

Foreign Policy: Can The President Act Alone?Gaps And Conflicts In The Constitutional Grants Of Power, Dana C. Makielski

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

The Framers did not intend the Constitution to be an all-inclusive "bill of lading," for we cannot forget John Marshall's famous admonition "that it is a constitution we are expounding."' Nonetheless, there are many large gaps and conflicts in the allocation of power among the three branches, most in the area of foreign relations, that have caused serious problems for our nation's leaders and constitutional scholars over the past two centuries. How have our presidents reacted? Certainly the President can and has acted on his own in negotiating, enacting, and implementing foreign policy, despite the lack of any express executive …
