Maranao Muslim Women Educational Administrators: An Initial Study Of The Emerging Muslim Women Leaders In The Philippines, Carmelita S. Lacar Dec 1996

Maranao Muslim Women Educational Administrators: An Initial Study Of The Emerging Muslim Women Leaders In The Philippines, Carmelita S. Lacar

Dissertations

Long deprived of consequential participation in socioeconomic exchanges outside the home, Filipino Muslim women are now breaking out of their traditional mold. Increasingly, they are acquiring higher education and are assuming vocational and leadership roles which, in years past, were inaccessible to them. Focused on Maranao Muslim women educational administrators, this survey sought to: (a) describe their salient characteristics, career development experiences, goals, and visions that distinguish them from their Muslim women subordinates; (b) describe factors influencing their career; (c) describe their leadership behaviors; and (d) deduce some policy and practical implications of the findings. Primary data on 75 variables …

A Note On Distributions Of True Versus Fabricated Data, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

New empirical evidence and statistical derivations of Benford’s Law have led to successful goodness-of fit tests to detect fraud in accounting data. Several recent case studies support the hypothesis that fabricated data does not conform to expected true digital frequencies.

Diseased Thyrocytes Have Aberrant Communication And Tnf Receptor Secretion, Mary Labue Dec 1996

Diseased Thyrocytes Have Aberrant Communication And Tnf Receptor Secretion, Mary Labue

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Autoimmune diseases are a world-wide health concern and are an intense area of investigation. However, one area of research has been largely ignored. This involves the contribution of the target tissue to the disease process. We hypothesized that cell-cell communication is disrupted by lymphocytic infiltration and advancing fibrosis and this disruption results in altered target cell responses to immune components produced at the site of inflammation, including Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF- α).

We have used thyroiditis as our model of autoimmunity and have documented the development of spontaneous thyroiditis in MRL-lpr/lpr mice. We have found aberrant connexin expression in …

Aberrant Communication And Protein Kinase C In Experimental Autoimmune Thyroiditis, Joyce P. Lazarus Dec 1996

Aberrant Communication And Protein Kinase C In Experimental Autoimmune Thyroiditis, Joyce P. Lazarus

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Autoimmune diseases are a worldwide healthcare concern. Research has focused mainly on the role of the immune system and genetic susceptibility to autoimmune disease. However, this study investigates altered target tissue properties and their contributions to the pathogenesis of induced autoimmune thyroiditis in Lewis rats. Our hypothesis was; inflammation-induced lymphocytic infiltration and subsequent fibrosis results in physical disruption of gap junctional communication in the target tissue contributing to the disease process. Our study of intercellular communication in experimentally-induced autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT) in Lewis rats revealed a deficiency in connexin expression, connexin assembly and dye transfer [(results corroborated in murine model …

Structural And Functional Analysis Of Secondary Structure Block To Mrna Utilization, Juan Lin Dec 1996

Structural And Functional Analysis Of Secondary Structure Block To Mrna Utilization, Juan Lin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Experimentally introduced secondary structure, formed by a cis-targeted hammerhead ribozyme in exon 2 two nucleotides dowstream of the 3' splice site of a yeast ACT-E. coli lacZ fusion gene, virtually abolishes splicing in vivo and inhibits B-galactosidase production. This is the first demonstration of the splicing inhibitory effect of secondary structures occurring in exons in the absence of splice site sequestration. Our goal is to understand the mechanism by which utilization of this splice site is impeded. Two cis - and one trans-acting mutations that alleviate the splicing blockage were obtained by screening for restoration of B-galactosidase activity. Both cis …

Mccook's Man On Main Street: Publisher Harry D. Strunk And The Politics Of Water Reclamation In Southwest Nebraska, 1928-1938, Charles E. Real

Student Work

By the time Harry D. Strunk arrived in his new home of McCook, Nebraska in 1909, he had set his sights on becoming a newspaperman. While only seventeen years-old at the time of his first job with a McCook newspaper, he had already worked as a printer's devil and itinerant printer since the age of fourteen. With his arrival in McCook and first job in that city with the established Tribune, he soon found that his future in the newspaper business lay with starting his own paper. In 1911, without benefit of a formal journalistic education, Strunk opened the Red …

The League Of Women Voters Of Greater Omaha, 1920-1995, Deborah C. O'Donnell Dec 1996

The League Of Women Voters Of Greater Omaha, 1920-1995, Deborah C. O'Donnell

Student Work

Most people know the League of Women Voters for its election-related activities; however, the League of Women Voters of Greater Omaha is also a recognized force in shaping public policy and in promoting citizen participation at all levels of government. In addition to voter registration activities and preparing voters' guides, League members also study important civic issues and give the public the information they need in deciding questions requiring potential political action. Six months before the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, the National League of Woman Voters was launched as an independent organization. The Omaha League was …

A Descriptive Study Of Preschool Children Learning Through Shared Activity, Carol Lynn Enger Dec 1996

A Descriptive Study Of Preschool Children Learning Through Shared Activity, Carol Lynn Enger

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a better understanding of how preschool children learn from other children in shared activities. Shared activities provide opportunities for children to assist each other in a meaningful social context. The question directing the study was: how do preschool children assist other children to learn in teacher designed learning centers and in child directed free play activities?

In order to discover how and when children are learning from other children, an observational study of one universtiy campus child care center was conducted over a period of seven months. Initial investigations included observations of …

The Contribution Of Auditory Processing To Adult Age Differences In Memory Performance, Danae J. Lund Dec 1996

The Contribution Of Auditory Processing To Adult Age Differences In Memory Performance, Danae J. Lund

Theses and Dissertations

Recently, there has been increased interest in the changes in neuropsychological functioning which are associated with normal aging. Understanding age differences in neuropsychological functioning is of particular importance in the discrimination of normal aging from the early onset of Alzheimer’s Disease or other age-associated dementia. Older adults have been observed to perform more poorly than younger adults on several auditory memory measures which are commonly included in neuropsychological batteries. Age associated declines on these measures have been reported even in the absence of dementia or other health concerns.

To date, explanations for these age differences have focused on a decline …

Waterfowl Nest Success In Two Habitat Types On Lonetree Wildlife Management Area, Jon Merril Roaldson Dec 1996

Waterfowl Nest Success In Two Habitat Types On Lonetree Wildlife Management Area, Jon Merril Roaldson

Theses and Dissertations

Land managers have long debated the efficacy of available options for replacement plant communities and planted cover on previously disturbed soils. I used waterfowl nest success to evaluate planted cover types of Dense Nesting Cover (DNC) and Native Grass Planting (NP) from late April-early August 1994-95 on 39 Lonetree WMA study areas in central North Dakota. I was unable to detect a significant difference in waterfowl nest success between DNC and NP during 1994-95, despite major differences in cover height and density by visual obstruction reading (VOR) (P=0.001) and maximum height (P=0.02) measures by cover-year interaction. The power of our …
