Lending Discrimination: Economic Theory, Econometric Evidence, And The Community Reinvestment Act, Keith N. Hylton, Vincent D. Rougeau Dec 1996

Lending Discrimination: Economic Theory, Econometric Evidence, And The Community Reinvestment Act, Keith N. Hylton, Vincent D. Rougeau

Faculty Scholarship

Although it has been settled law for almost two decades, there has been a heightened interest in the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) over the last several years. One factor driving this interest is the continuing economic decline of the inner cities and the consequent widening of the wealth gap between cities and surrounding suburbs in many areas of the country. A second factor is the consolidation of the banking industry, which has encouraged expansion-oriented banks to improve their CRA ratings to gain the approval of regulators. A recent effort to enhance enforcement of the statute, in part the result of …

The Geology And Structures In The Northern Hiko Range, Lincoln County, Nevada, Douglas D. Switzer Dec 1996

The Geology And Structures In The Northern Hiko Range, Lincoln County, Nevada, Douglas D. Switzer

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In the northern Hiko Range, extension occurred in four temporally distinct episodes during the Cenozoic. The extensional events are (1) prevolcanic (> 27.31 ± 0. 03 Ma), (2) syn-volcanic (between 22.78 ± 0,03 and 18.5 ± 0.4 Ma), (3) Tertiary(?) post-volcanic ( < 14.7 ± 0.4 Ma), and ( 4) Pliocene(?) - Quaternary. Four fault sets are delineated based on orientation and cross-cutting relationships: (I) northeast- to northwest-striking moderately dipping prevolcanic faults, (2) east-west striking, steeply-dipping syn-volcanic faults, (3) east-west- and east-northeast-striking, steeply dipping Tertiary(?) post-volcanic faults, and (4) generally north-striking steeply dipping Pliocene (?) - Quaternary faults.

Prevolcanic faults in the northern Hiko Range are interpreted to be footwall faults to an Oligocene age extensional system. These faults increase the area affected by Oligocene extension and support existing evidence that suggests this event is widespread.

A tectonomagmatic rift model has been proposed to explain synvolcanic extension during the Tertiary in the northern Basin and Range …

Worker Productivity As A Function Of The Percentage Of Monetary Incentives To Base Pay, Carol J. Frisch Dec 1996

Worker Productivity As A Function Of The Percentage Of Monetary Incentives To Base Pay, Carol J. Frisch

Dissertations

Several studies have shown that individuals working under pay conditions with monetary incentives have higher levels of productivity than individuals working for non-incentive pay, such as hourly wages (Abernathy, Duffy, & O’Brien, 1982; Dierks & McNally, 1987; Farr, 1976; Gaetani, Hoxeng, & Austin, 1986; George & Hopkins, 1989; London & Oldham, 1977; Orpen, 1982; Nebeker & Neuberger, 1985; Terborg & Miller, 1978; Yukl, Wexley, & Seymore, 1972). It has also been noted that a minimum of 30% incentive is generally accepted as necessary to affect (employee) motivation (Fein, 1970), and increasing incentives above this level will not result in appreciable …

Hydrogeology And Stable Isotope Investigations Of A Landfill Impacted Site In Southwest Michigan, Eliot Anong Atekwana Dec 1996

Hydrogeology And Stable Isotope Investigations Of A Landfill Impacted Site In Southwest Michigan, Eliot Anong Atekwana

Dissertations

The Cork Street landfill in the City of Kalamazoo is unlined and constructed in glacial drift material. Although water quality in some of the landfill monitoring wells is poor, the degree of the landfill’s influence to groundwater, wetlands and Davis Creek located downgradient of the landfill is unknown. The objective of this study is to evaluate the degree of the landfill’s impact in this region through hydrologic and stable isotope analysis.

Site characterization using geophysical surveys and specific conductance measurements indicates highly conductive shallow groundwater probably attributable to groundwater contamination. Hydrologic evaluation of this region shows that groundwater flows towards …

The Mediating Effects Of Religiosity And Irrational Beliefs In The Differential Experiences Of Guilt And Depression In Gender-Traditional And Gender-Nontraditional Men, Daniel L. Snyder Dec 1996

The Mediating Effects Of Religiosity And Irrational Beliefs In The Differential Experiences Of Guilt And Depression In Gender-Traditional And Gender-Nontraditional Men, Daniel L. Snyder

Dissertations

This research addressed the question of whether or not religiosity and irrational beliefs were predictors of depression or guilt for men who were in gender-traditional and gender-nontraditional occupations. This was a correlational regression study. Religiosity was measured by the Religiosity Scale, irrational beliefs were measured by the Personal Beliefs Test, guilt was measured by the Situational Guilt Scale, depression was measured by the Beck Depression Inventory. It was anticipated that religiosity would be a predictor of depression and guilt for gender-traditional men, and that endorsement of irrational beliefs would be a predictor of both depression and guilt for both groups. …

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence of decayed, missing and filled teeth and periodontal disease among male, non-camp, nonpsychiatric inmates in the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) and to assess the impact of age, race, security level, and years of incarceration on these parameters of oral health. Additionally, this study was designed to determine the emergent, urgent or routine dental treatment needs of this same population and to compare the ability of the existing Michigan Department of Corrections dental program to meet these needs. A representative sample of 251 inmates was randomly selected from thirteen geographically …

The Impact Of The Patient Representative On Satisfaction, Diana L. Newman Dec 1996

The Impact Of The Patient Representative On Satisfaction, Diana L. Newman

Dissertations

As the cost of providing healthcare services continues to rise, hospitals and other healthcare provider organizations adopt businesslike approaches to increase efficiency and productivity. The satisfaction level of the individual patient may, however, be determined by how care is delivered rather than what services are provided.

In order to enhance patient satisfaction and prevent the consequences of dissatisfaction, many healthcare institutions have utilized the role of the patient representative. The primary function of the patient representative is to act as a liaison between the patients, their families, and the healthcare providers and staff.

The purpose of this study was to …

Integrity Of Digraphs, Robert Charles Vandell

Dissertations

The vertex-integrity of a digraph D, denoted I(D), is defined to be the minimum over aIII subsets X of the vertex set of D for the quantity IXI + m(D - X), w here IXI is the number of vertices in X and m(D - X) is the maximum order of a strong component in the digraph D - X. In a like manner, the arc-integrity of the digraph D, denoted I’(D), is defined to be the minimum over all subsets Y of the arc set of D for the quantity IYI + m(D - Y), where IYI is the …

A World Federal State: A Study Of The Progression Of Civilization And A Recommendation For The Future, Joseph Oakes Dec 1996

A World Federal State: A Study Of The Progression Of Civilization And A Recommendation For The Future, Joseph Oakes

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The progression of human civilization sits at the crossroads. Fueled by an emphasis in recent decades on interdependence, the world has realigned its economic and political operations to an international scale. Couple this development with grand advancements made in technology which have served to unite the world, and human civilization has set off on a path that leads to further integration. What is needed, however, is a realization of the inherent benefits that would come from the creation of a capitalistic world federal system.

Autonomous Language Learning : The Importance Of Metacognition, Goal-Setting And Cultures Of Practice, Cynthia J. White Dec 1996

Autonomous Language Learning : The Importance Of Metacognition, Goal-Setting And Cultures Of Practice, Cynthia J. White

PASAA

This paper identifies and describes three interrelated concepts which were found to be central to the development of autonomy in a study of distance foreign language learners, namely metacognition, goal-setting and cultures of practice. One key aspect of metacognition, self-management, is discussed in terms of how it is deployed by learner to establish an autonomous approach to learning. It is argued that goal-setting is also central to autonomy and examples are given of how learners used metacognitive awareness to set explicit goals for the course and direction of their learning. Learners who did not set goals reported difficulty in engaging …

Hotel Receptionists And Customers : Making The Most Of Computer Simulations In The Foreign-Language Classroom, Rolf Palmberg Dec 1996

Hotel Receptionists And Customers : Making The Most Of Computer Simulations In The Foreign-Language Classroom, Rolf Palmberg

PASAA

The paper suggests ways in which one specific simulation program, Hotel Excelsior, can be linked in with ordinary foreign-language classroom work in order to practise not only oral communication but also, depending on the learning objectives set up by the teacher for the teaching period in question, any (or all) of the three other categories of language skills (listening, reading and writing). The suggestions include pre-computer, computer and post-computer phases providing opportunity for individual, pair and/or group work according to the teacher's choice.

Expanding Peer Coaching : Pedagogical Applications Of Conference Coaching, Nicholas Dimmitt Dec 1996

Expanding Peer Coaching : Pedagogical Applications Of Conference Coaching, Nicholas Dimmitt

PASAA

Recent research demonstrates that peer coaching can be a productive and constructive method for promoting teacher professional development and can build increased collegiality and confidence (Galbraith & Anstrom, 1995). This paper reviews current models of peer coaching; technical, collegial, challenge and team coaching—and suggests practical applications for its use in individual professional development and personal self-growth for classroom teachers. One objection to peer coaching has been that it can be time intensive, with teachers often too immersed in their schedules to participate. This paper presents a variation of peer coaching, conference coaching, which requires minimum preparation time and employs "micro …

The introduction describes why the English language has become increasingly popular in a country in which the vehicle for interpersonal communication is largely Thai. In the second section, the author reports on a study focusing on the needs of Chulalongkorn University students and their use of the English language. The majority of students responded that they needed more practice on listening and speaking skills, as well …

The Effect Of Enrollment Planning On Financial Aid Awards, Homer A. Wesley Iii., Christy E. Sanders Dec 1996

The Effect Of Enrollment Planning On Financial Aid Awards, Homer A. Wesley Iii., Christy E. Sanders

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Due to rising tuition costs at postsecondary institutions, financial aid has become more important to students and parents as they make their college choice decisions. There is wide discussion about how available aid resources might best be used to attract prospective students. Emerging trends suggest that success in attracting the desired freshman class may depend on allocating resources in a nontraditional manner. The traditional approach to awarding aid has been based on strict need analysis and seeks to fully subsidize college costs. This study sought to determine the appropriateness of awarding aid based on recruitment objectives as opposed to traditional …

Property Law, W. Wade Berryhill Dec 1996

Property Law, W. Wade Berryhill

Law Faculty Publications

As legal years go, action on the 1996 legislative and judicial fronts was relatively quiet in the area of property law. The legislative activity which spawned most of the interest was bills addressing the definitional limits of the unauthorized practice of law in real estate closings. These bills were not enacted and have been carried over for the next legislative session. Several judicial decisions, although none could be described as landmark determinations, are of interest and clarify points of law. These cases, as well as selected items of legislation which are believed to be of the most practical interest to …

Implicit Beliefs About Change: A Theory-Grounded Measure Applied To Community Organizations Serving Children, Youth, And Families, Susan B. Silverberg, Sherry C. Betts, Angela J. Huebner, Sonia Cota-Robles Dec 1996

Implicit Beliefs About Change: A Theory-Grounded Measure Applied To Community Organizations Serving Children, Youth, And Families, Susan B. Silverberg, Sherry C. Betts, Angela J. Huebner, Sonia Cota-Robles

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The aim of this study was to design and evaluate a theory-grounded measure that taps staff beliefs about the possibility for change in an organization which serves children, youth and families at the community level. The rationale for measuring staff beliefs about change derived from a motivation theory that features two contrasting beliefs structures (entity vs. incremental), and the goals and behavioral dispositions associated with each (Dweck & Leggett, 1988). Twenty-nine individuals associated with the community-based organization completed the newly developed Implicit Beliefs About Change Scale (IBACS) and participatedi n a semi-structured interview. Quantitative analyses indicated that the IBACS has …
