Exurban Development, Transportation Infrastructure And Access Management, Philip J. Wuest Dec 1996

Exurban Development, Transportation Infrastructure And Access Management, Philip J. Wuest

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

This paper explores the changing role of state highway corridors in an era of continued urban growth and decentralization. Its primary focus is on the impact of exurban development on state highway corridors and on the policy of access management to control or limit those impacts. The role of access management in distributing the benefits and costs of access to public facilities is outlined. As urban areas expand at the fringe, it is important to clarify to what extent the public good of roadways is diminished by direct corridor access by the private sector. This work is timely and relevant …

Full Circle: Native Educational Approaches Show The Way, Mclellan Hall

Tribal Nations Documents

When Europeans encountered the indigenous people of Turtle Island, as North America is known to many Native American tribes, they discovered diverse cultures, ranging from large political confederacies, to densely populated farming communities, to small hunting and gathering groups.

Automorphisms On C, Adnan Nemr Said Dec 1996

Automorphisms On C, Adnan Nemr Said

Theses (Pre-2016)

The only nontrivial automorphism of Q and R is the identity function. The rest of the paper is devoted to the study of automorphisms on C. If X is any set of complex numbers which is algebraically independent over Q, then any one-to-one correspondence a:X􁪽X extends to an automorphism F:Q(X)􁪽Q(X) where F(r) = r for rEQ and F(s) = a(s) for SEX. A maximal algebraically independent set in Cover Q is called a transcendence basis of Cover Q. Such a transcendence basis exists and is infinite. It is proved that any automorphism F:Q(X)􁪽Q(X) can be extended to an automorphism on …

The Commercialization Of The Medieval Ideal: The Spanish Forger And Handbooks Of Illumination, Amy E. Dawson Dec 1996

The Commercialization Of The Medieval Ideal: The Spanish Forger And Handbooks Of Illumination, Amy E. Dawson

Masters Theses

This study analyzes the commercialization of popular medievalism that occurred in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. By examining the works of a forger of medieval manuscripts this research identifies a market created for works that expressed a particularly "Romantic" vision of medieval society. Moreover, this study offers a discussion of late nineteenth century handbooks that teach techniques of illumination. These works are examined to gain an understanding of the audience for which "medieval" works were created. Publication information reveals the popularity of these handbooks. The. prefatory material examined here pinpoints the idealization of the "medieval" that made handbooks …

The Effect Of Chromium Compounds On The Mutagenic Rate Of Benzo[A]Pyrenediolepoxide In Human Fibroblasts, Yordanos Tesfai Dec 1996

The Effect Of Chromium Compounds On The Mutagenic Rate Of Benzo[A]Pyrenediolepoxide In Human Fibroblasts, Yordanos Tesfai

Masters Theses

Cancer researchers are interested in identifying the environmental causes and synergistic influences of different chemical carcinogens in order to decrease the risk of cancer. There are numerous studies which have investigated the effect of individual carcinogens but relatively few in which a well defined mixture of chemicals have been used. The present study was performed to examine the effect of chromium compounds on benzo[a]pyrene diolepoxide (BPDE) induced cytotoxicity and mutagenicity in human fibroblasts. Cytotoxicity was measured by the ability to fonn colonies while selection of 6-thioguanine resistant mutants were used to study mutagenesis in human fibroblasts.

Our results indicate that …

Strength Properties Of Steam Exploded Laser Printed Papers, Dhamodharan Srinivasan Dec 1996

Strength Properties Of Steam Exploded Laser Printed Papers, Dhamodharan Srinivasan

Masters Theses

The mam objective of this study was to investigate the effect of steam explosion pulping on the strength properties of recycled fibers. The properties considered were zerospan tensile strength, tensile breaking length, tensile stretch, tensile energy absorption, scott bond and pentosan content. This study also examined the important operating parameters that affect the properties. Laser printed waste paper was pulped by the steam explosion process. The experiments were statistically modeled to cover the various process variables. Chemical addition, residence time, pressure, and dispersant level were varied during the steam explosion experiments. Chemical addition was kept at four levels and other …

Expression And Regulation Properties Of Pseudomonas L-Arabinose Utilization Plasmids, Mary E. Barecki Dec 1996

Expression And Regulation Properties Of Pseudomonas L-Arabinose Utilization Plasmids, Mary E. Barecki

Masters Theses

The L-arabinose utilization pathway in Pseudomonas fluorescens is a unique metabolic pathway. In Pseudomonas, L-arabinose is converted to the end product α-ketogluterate and does not involve phosphorylated intermediates. This differs from the well studied L-arabinose pathway found in Escherichia coli which contains phosphorylated intermediates.

The enzymes of the L-arabinose pathway have been shown to be induced in the presence of L-arabinose in P. saccharophila. The current study determined regulatory properties of previously cloned chromosomal fragments of P. fluorescens which confer an L-arabinose positive phenotype to the surrogate host, Pseudomonas putida. Cells of P. putida containing plasmids pPZ221, …

Beyond Survival: A Case Study Of The Milwaukee Urban Waldorf School, Phaizon Rhys Wood Dec 1996

Beyond Survival: A Case Study Of The Milwaukee Urban Waldorf School, Phaizon Rhys Wood

Doctoral Dissertations

Schooling has often provided possibilities for the practice of freedom with respect to the education of African-American children but has, at the same time, represented a threat to their system of survival. Hale (cited in Hale-Benson, 1990) believes that what is needed is an education that provides cultural continuity - not intervention. The challenge is to provide an effective education - one that can "conceptualize Black children within the context of their culture" (p. 210).

The literature review that follows provides the foundation for the argument that a model already exists that is emancipatory in its original design, that identifies …
