Climate And Nitrogen Controls On The Geography And Timescales Of Terrestrial Biogeochemical Cycling, David S. Schimel, Rob Braswell, R Mckeown, Dennis S. Ojima, W J. Parton, W Pulliam Dec 1996

Climate And Nitrogen Controls On The Geography And Timescales Of Terrestrial Biogeochemical Cycling, David S. Schimel, Rob Braswell, R Mckeown, Dennis S. Ojima, W J. Parton, W Pulliam

Earth Sciences

We used the terrestrial ecosystem model “Century” to evaluate the relative roles of water and nitrogen limitation of net primary productivity, spatially and in response to climate variability. Within ecology, there has been considerable confusion and controversy over the large-scale significance of limitation of net primary production (NPP) by nutrients versus biophysical quantities (e.g., heat, water, and sunlight) with considerable evidence supporting both views. The Century model, run to a quasi-steady state condition, predicts “equilibration” of water with nutrient limitation, because carbon fixation and nitrogen fluxes (inputs and losses) are controlled by water fluxes, and the capture of nitrogen into …

Local Government Law, R. Perry Sentell Jr. Dec 1996

Local Government Law, R. Perry Sentell Jr.

Mercer Law Review

The year was one of concern and hope, in both private and public affairs. As for the latter, the concern encompassed local government's continuing need for inordinate expenditures of both judicial and legislative attention. The hope was that, at some point, local government would "get it right." This survey graphically illustrates the causes for concern; it also affords glimmers of reason for hope.

Game Theory And The Application To Mainland China-Taiwan Relations From 1949-1995, Po-Tung Chang Dec 1996

Game Theory And The Application To Mainland China-Taiwan Relations From 1949-1995, Po-Tung Chang

Masters Theses

This study is dedicated to evaluating the capacity of game-theoretical models in analyzing and explaining international crises like mainland China-Taiwan relations. To highlight and reflect the nature of these complicated long-run relations, the author formulates a dynamic game model based on the combination of three well-known models, Deadlock, Prisoner's Dilemma, and Chicken instead of occupying one dominant model.

The mainland China-Taiwan relations (1949-1995) are divided into three individual phases in accordance with the configuration of game models: (1) the military confrontation phase (1949-78); (2) the peaceful competition phase (1978-86); and (3) the premature cooperation phase (1987-95). By generating and suggesting …

An Efficient Collective Communication Library For Pvm, Chirapol Mathawaphan Dec 1996

An Efficient Collective Communication Library For Pvm, Chirapol Mathawaphan

Masters Theses

PVM enables the use of network of workstations for parallel and distributed computation. PVM provides the message-passing primitives which include those for point-to-point communication and collective communications. The current approaches for the collective communication operations in PVM use algorithms that do not exhibit good performance.

In this thesis, we develop new approaches to improve the performance of collective communication operations in PVM by using shared memory with IP broadcasting and IP multicasting mechanism. We have implemented these approaches and have run extensive tests. This report shows the comparison of the time used by current approaches and our approaches.

Addressing Spirituality In Occupational Therapy Treatment, Barbara R. Howe Dec 1996

Addressing Spirituality In Occupational Therapy Treatment, Barbara R. Howe

Masters Theses

Literature review identified confusion in the definitions of spirituality with religion. However, there have been attempts to separate the two definitions by professionals who consider holism an important concept of clinical practice. This · study was designed to identify occupational therapists' definitions of spirituality in clinical practice. Also under investigation was the therapist's assessment and use of spirituality for treatment purposes.

A survey was sent to a random sample of occupational therapists in order to gather data about their spiritual activities, their personal definitions of spirituality and their use of spirituality in evaluation and treatment of clients.

Occupational therapists who …

Clinical Investigation Of A New Cervical Traction Device With Emg Biofeedback - A Preliminary Study, Ming-Yih Lee, Alice M. K. Wong, Walter H. Chang, Yu-Luen Chen, Jung-Kun Kuo, Je-Ren Jen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The intermittent cervical traction is a popular physical therapeutic device for relieving neck pain or cervical radiculopathy. In this paper, the clinical evaluation of a newly developed traction modality with electromyography biofeedback was presented. Twenty four patients with neck pain were divided into high tension and low tension group according to the severity of muscle spasm. The subjects were farther randomly separated into two subgroups. The control and experimental subgroup were treated with conventional and new biofeedback traction modalities respectively. Each subject was treated in sitting position for twenty minutes every other day for seven weeks. The reduction of the …

Improving Social Work Practice With Persons Who Are Homeless And Mentally Ill, Carol T. Mowbray, Shirley P. Thrasher, Evan Cohen, Deborah Bybee

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Despite a proliferation of programs targeted for persons who are homeless and mentally ill, few reports in the literature detail the challenges experienced or strategies utilized by workers, the majority of whom are social workers. The present study reports results from two focus group sessions held with staff running a model service intervention for this population at two separate sites. The methodology that was utilized quanitified results, allowing presentation of themes, as well as comparisons of the frequency of responses across categories and by site. Staff perceived barriersa ssociatedw ith client behaviors and characteristicsp redominated at both sites. However, systemic …

Women Behind Bars: Trends And Policy Issues, Mark S. Kaplan, Jennifer E. Sasser Dec 1996

Women Behind Bars: Trends And Policy Issues, Mark S. Kaplan, Jennifer E. Sasser

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In the crusade to get tough on crime, policy makers have also gotten tough on women, drawing them into prisons in rapidly growing numbers. Today, incarcerated women are predominately poor, uneducated, and unskilled; are disproportionately African American and Latina young women with children; and have severe health and mental health problems. This article examines the characteristics and needs of these women and presents recommendations for their more humane and pragmatic treatment and for social policy that is relevant for the decarceration of this country's soaring female prison population.
