Assessment Of Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents Using The Rorschach: An Analysis Of The Ea/Es Relationship, Jordan L. Mulder Dec 1996

Assessment Of Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents Using The Rorschach: An Analysis Of The Ea/Es Relationship, Jordan L. Mulder

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a long history of debate regarding the validity of the Rorschach Inkblot test. Much of the previous research has involved adult subjects within clinical settings. This study investigates the validity of the Rorschach with adolescents classified as being emotionally disturbed according to the educational definition. School personnel and, particularly, school psychologists have the difficult task of identifying individuals who are emotionally disturbed (ED). It appears that a valid measure of covert processes may be helpful in making these determinations. Due to the vast number of scores and codes generated from the Rorschach using Exner's (1978) Comprehensive Scoring System, …

Small Business Lending And Bank Profitability, James Kolari, Robert Berney, Charles Ou Dec 1996

Small Business Lending And Bank Profitability, James Kolari, Robert Berney, Charles Ou

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

In theory commercial banks exist to resolve asymmetric information problems in credit markets. Because small business firms have much greater information problems than large firms, it is not surprising that they depend almost entirely on banks for external finance needs. Unfortunately, little is known either in academic literature or banking practice about the profitability of small business credit (and related information) services. The present study employs recently available business loan size information from the Call Reports for all insured U.S. commercial banks in 1994 and 1995 to examine the relationship between bank profits and small business credit. Regression analyses are …

Pricing High Growth Firms: Arbitrage Opportunities In The Inc. 100, Benoit F. Leleux, Veronique M. Matthys, Julian E. Lange Dec 1996

Pricing High Growth Firms: Arbitrage Opportunities In The Inc. 100, Benoit F. Leleux, Veronique M. Matthys, Julian E. Lange

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The ability of the market to price high growth stocks is examined by analyzing the returns to simple investment portfolio strategies based on public information. The portfolios consist of shares in the firms listed in the Inc. 100 Ranking of the fastest growing public companies in America. The results indicate that significant abnormal returns are generated by these strategies, even after adjusting for risk. Although the tests could potentially be affected by a form of survivorship bias, supplementary analyses indicate that this is unlikely to be the case here. These results support the assumption that markets have difficulties pricing high-growth …

Family Businesses: Can The Family And The Business Finances Be Separated? Preliminary Results, George W. Haynes, Rosemary J. Avery Dec 1996

Family Businesses: Can The Family And The Business Finances Be Separated? Preliminary Results, George W. Haynes, Rosemary J. Avery

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Small businesses had nearly $1.25 trillion in loans outstanding from commercial lenders, business finance companies, other businesses in the form of trade credit, and friends and relatives in the early 1990s (Ou, 1991). Based on recent information derived from the National Survey on Small Business Finance (NSSBF), loans held by commercial banks and family members or owners of the firm were significant sources of credit, comprising 54 and 18 percent of all loans, respectively (Haynes, 1996). The relative importance of these types of loans suggests that the finances of the business and the family are often intertwined. This study utilizes …

The Returns From Informal Venture Capital Investments: An Exploratory Study, Annareetta Lumme, Colin Mason, Markku Suomi Dec 1996

The Returns From Informal Venture Capital Investments: An Exploratory Study, Annareetta Lumme, Colin Mason, Markku Suomi

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Despite the recent increase in research on informal venture capital there are many aspects of this market for which no information exists. One such issue is exits. This exploratory study is the first to address this issue. It is based on a survey of 38 active business angels in Finland who had made a total of 155 investments; 20 of these investors had made 49 exits. Two aspects are addressed. First, evidence is presented on investment performance and the timing and method of exit. Second, the paper explores differences between those investors with a successful track-record of exits and those …

Investing In Neighborhood Entrepreneurs: Private Foundations As Community Development Venture Capitalists, Ross Gittell, Jeffrey Sohl, Phillip Thompson Dec 1996

Investing In Neighborhood Entrepreneurs: Private Foundations As Community Development Venture Capitalists, Ross Gittell, Jeffrey Sohl, Phillip Thompson

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Entrepreneurs in low-income and minority neighborhoods encounter numerous problems in securing capital. To address this capital gap this paper considers a new role for private foundations as community development venture capitalists (CDVCs). It is suggested that through grant making and program-related investments, foundations may assume an equity stake in neighborhood-based entrepreneurs and acting as CDVCs apply lessons from the value-added component of private equity financing, including drawing on their expertise, professional contacts and financial resources to contribute to entrepreneurial efforts in the inner city.

Serial Investors And Early Stage Finance, Peter Kelly, Michael Hay Dec 1996

Serial Investors And Early Stage Finance, Peter Kelly, Michael Hay

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This study examines the early stage investment activity of UK serial investors, individuals who have made at least three private investments. Two distinct groups emerged; one which invested on their own all the time ("solo serial investors") and the other which invested with others almost exclusively ("syndicate serial investors"). Both groups had invested in a variety of industrial sectors, a majority of which were in sectors where no one in the investor group had previous direct experience. Concept familiarity appeared to be a necessary, albeit insufficient, prerequisite to the decision to invest. For a majority of the investments reviewed for …

Small Business Failure Rates: Choice Of Definition And The Size Effect, John Watson, Jim Everett Dec 1996

Small Business Failure Rates: Choice Of Definition And The Size Effect, John Watson, Jim Everett

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Results of many previous studies on the rate of small business failure suggest an inverse relationship between size of business and propensity to fail. However, it has been suggested that this inverse relationship, between firm size and the rate of discontinuance, may more accurately be characterized as an inverse relationship between age of business and the rate of discontinuance. While some studies have confirmed the positive association between failure and age, they have generally found that a size effect persists even after controlling for age. The central objective of this study is to show how reported failure rates may depend …

Investment Behavior And The Small Firm Effect, Robert J. Sweeney, Robert F. Scherer, Janet Goulet, Waldemar M. Goulet Dec 1996

Investment Behavior And The Small Firm Effect, Robert J. Sweeney, Robert F. Scherer, Janet Goulet, Waldemar M. Goulet

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Our purpose in this review is to develop one explanation of market behavior which is consistent with the many empirical findings that appear to be inconsistent with the market efficiency hypothesis. To date, researchers have attempted to reconcile their empirical results with market efficiency based on either measurement error or structural inefficiencies. We propose a different approach to market efficiency. We posit that the empirical findings previous researchers report are by their nature ex post, and are a direct result of a market which is best described as efficient. We develop a model and provide a simulation to support this …

A Note On The Use Of Debt By Venture Capital Backed Firms, Rick H. Mull, Drew B. Winters Dec 1996

A Note On The Use Of Debt By Venture Capital Backed Firms, Rick H. Mull, Drew B. Winters

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Much of the current research regarding the venture capitalist examines samples of venture capital (VC) backed firms rather than the venture capitalist itself. While VC backed firms may represent the most reasonable proxy available for the study of the venture capitalist, consideration of firm-specific characteristics may need to be included to mitigate biased conclusions. Controlling for the determinants of capital structure, we examine the persistence of previously noted differences in capital structure choice and find that VC backing does not systematically alter the use of debt by firms. These results suggest that not controlling for firm specific differences when contrasting …

Finance Companies And Small Business Borrowers: An Empirical Investigation, George Haynes, Myles Watts Dec 1996

Finance Companies And Small Business Borrowers: An Empirical Investigation, George Haynes, Myles Watts

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Finance companies have been perceived as isolated and insignificant lenders, attracting high risk borrowers and charging these borrowers relatively high prices. Using the 1988 National Survey of Small Business Finance, this study examines the relationship between finance companies and other lenders, describes the characteristics of borrowers attracted to finance companies and assesses whether finance companies charge higher loan prices and impose more stringent collateral requirements on their borrowers than other lenders. This study refutes the popular notion that finance companies are not mainstream lenders by suggesting that finance companies are an important source of financial capital attracting borrowers similar to …

Productivity Measurement In The Presence Of "Poorly Priced" Goods, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin Dec 1996

Productivity Measurement In The Presence Of "Poorly Priced" Goods, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Young (1995) estimated Total Factor Productivity (TFP) growth for Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea. He reported moderate growth rates for these four regions. This means that rapid growth of GDP in these four economies is due mainly to fast increase of inputs. Young (2000) also estimated the TFP growth rate of China to be 1.4% per year during the period of 1978 to 1998. Similar to his claim for the four 'Asian Tigers', he concluded that 'the productivity performance of the non-agricultural economy (of China) during the reform period is respectable, but not outstanding.' China's real GDP grew …

Stellar Oxygen Abundances.V.Abundances Of Two Hyades Dwarfs Derived From The 6300 Angstroms [Oi] Line, Jeremy R. King, Daniel D. Hiltgen Dec 1996

Stellar Oxygen Abundances.V.Abundances Of Two Hyades Dwarfs Derived From The 6300 Angstroms [Oi] Line, Jeremy R. King, Daniel D. Hiltgen

Publications

We present observations of the 6300 Å [O I] spectral region in two cool Hyades dwarfs, vB 79 and vB 25. We derive a mean iron abundance, [Fe/H]˜+0.11, in good agreement with recent analyses of F and G Hyades dwarfs. The O abundance derived from spectrum synthesis, [O/H]˜+0.15, is between the values deduced by Garcia Lopez et al. (1993, ApJ, 412, 173; [O/H]=-0.05 to -0.10) and King (1993, Ph. D. Dissertation, University of Hawaii; [O/H]=+0.26), who employed the 7774 Å O I triplet in hotter Hyades dwarfs. An accounting of differences between these two 7774 Å analyses is given. Our …

Constraints On The Origin Of The Remarkable Lithium Abundance In The Halo Star Bd+23 3912, Jeremy R. King, Constantine P. Deliyannis, Ann Merchant Boesgaard Dec 1996

Constraints On The Origin Of The Remarkable Lithium Abundance In The Halo Star Bd+23 3912, Jeremy R. King, Constantine P. Deliyannis, Ann Merchant Boesgaard

Publications

The Li abundance of the halo star BD+23 3912 ([Fe/H]=-1.5) lies a factor of 2 - 3 above the Spite plateau. This remarkable difference could reflect either less-than-average stellar Li depletion from a higher primordial Li abundance (as predicted by the Yale rotational stellar evolutionary models), which may have interesting implications for Big Bang nucleosynthesis, or the extraordinary action of Galactic Li production mechanisms. It is also possible that both processes have acted. We use our high resolution, high S/N Keck HIRES spectrum of BD+23 3912 to determine the s-process element abundances and 6Li/7Li ratio in this star. These values …

Galactic Evolution Of Silicon Isotopes: Applications To Presolar Sic Grains From Meteorites, F X. Timmes, Donald D. Clayton Dec 1996

Galactic Evolution Of Silicon Isotopes: Applications To Presolar Sic Grains From Meteorites, F X. Timmes, Donald D. Clayton

Publications

We calculate and discuss the chemical evolution of the isotopic silicon abundances in the interstellar medium (ISM) at distances and times appropriate to the birth of the solar system. This has several objectives, some of which are related to anomalous silicon isotope ratios within presolar grains extracted from meteorites; namely: (1) What is the relative importance for silicon isotopic compositions in the bulk ISM of Type II supernovae, Type Ia supernovae, and AGB stars? (2) Are 29Si and 30Si primary or secondary nucleosynthesis products? (3) In what isotopic direction in a three-isotope plot do core-collapse supernovae of different mass move …

Illustrations, Text, And The Child Reader: What Are Pictures In Children's Storybooks For?, Zhihui Fang

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Picture books are profusely illustrated books in which the illustrations are, to varying degrees, essential to the en joyment and understanding of the story (Tomlinson and Lynch-Brown, 1996). As the most characteristic form of children's literature (Nodelman, 1996), picture books hold a prominent place in children's literature because of the juxtaposition of pictures and words. Thanks to the public's acute awareness of the importance of childhood in human devel opment, to professional critical evaluation of children's literature, as well as to the advances in printing technology and art reproduction, children's literature has witnessed a dramatic increase in well-illustrated picture books.
