Women Owned Businesses And Bank Switching: The Role Of Customer Service, Susan Coleman, Mary Carsky Dec 1996

Women Owned Businesses And Bank Switching: The Role Of Customer Service, Susan Coleman, Mary Carsky

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The number of businesses owned and operated by women is increasing rapidly, and women owned businesses are becoming a powerful economic force. It is estimated that half of the businesses in this country will be owned and operated by women by the year 2,000. This article describes research conducted on women owned small businesses and the nature of their banking relationships. Findings revealed that over 90% of those surveyed used banking products. A surprisingly high percentage of the women surveyed had switched banks. Major reasons for switching included poor customer service, an arrogant and condescending attitude on the part of …

The Effects Of Early Stage Venture Capitalist Actions On Eventual Venture Disposition, Lowell W. Busenitz, James O. Fiet Dec 1996

The Effects Of Early Stage Venture Capitalist Actions On Eventual Venture Disposition, Lowell W. Busenitz, James O. Fiet

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This study examines the relationship between venture capitalist actions and the eventual disposition of a venture through an IPO, which is the most profitable exit strategy. The actions included in this study were ( 1) altering the amount of their investment; ( 2) securing a concentrated equity position; ( 3) diversifying their syndicate investments; and ( 4) introducing their investees to other sources of financing. After five years, this study found a positive relationship between IPO exit and ( 1) the amount of their investment; and ( 2) the diversification of their VC syndicate. However, it found only mixed results …

Valuation Of Early-Stage Ventures: Option Valuation Models Vs. Traditional Approaches, Robert H. Keeley, Sanjeev Punjabi, Lassaad Turki Dec 1996

Valuation Of Early-Stage Ventures: Option Valuation Models Vs. Traditional Approaches, Robert H. Keeley, Sanjeev Punjabi, Lassaad Turki

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper presents a new method for valuing early stage ventures, a method which views new ventures as multi-stage call options. It examines the traditional methods for valuing such ventures--the ubiquitous Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Method using a risk adjusted discount rate, and the Venture Capital method which uses high discount rates to offset optimistic forecasts--and describes their conceptual disadvantages visa vis the Option Method. In order to make the Option Method a practical alternative to traditional approaches, the paper presents an algorithm for valuing multi-stage options, and it develops the needed input data using venture capital archives and public …

The Agency Advantage Of Debt Over The Lifecycle Of The Firm, Ed Vos, Carolyn Forlong Dec 1996

The Agency Advantage Of Debt Over The Lifecycle Of The Firm, Ed Vos, Carolyn Forlong

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The question of an `optimal' capital structure of a firm has been studied for publicly listed businesses for years. From these studies, agency theory has emerged as a good way to understand a firm's capital structure. This paper empirically examines the role that agency theory plays in determining the capital structure of businesses as they move from being small unlisted businesses to newly listed on the stock exchange, to being mature listed businesses. The paper finds that debt has a negative agency advantage (defined as reducing agency costs of equity) for small businesses, a significant but minor advantage at the …

The Longer-Term Effects Of Management-Led Buy-Outs, Mike Wright, Nick Wilson, Ken Robbie Dec 1996

The Longer-Term Effects Of Management-Led Buy-Outs, Mike Wright, Nick Wilson, Ken Robbie

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

There is now extensive evidence on short-term performance improvements in buy-outs, but little relating to the longer-term. This paper examines the relatively neglected area of the longevity and longer-term effects of smaller buy-outs. In terms of longevity, the evidence presented shows that the majority remain as independent buy-outs for at least eight years after the transaction, and that entrepreneurial actions concerning both restructuring and product innovation are important parts of entrepreneurs' strategies over a ten year period or more. For the first time, the paper also provides an analysis of the financial performance and productivity of a large sample of …

Evidence Of Bootstrap Financing Among Small Start-Up Firms, Howard E. Van Auken, Lynn Neeley Dec 1996

Evidence Of Bootstrap Financing Among Small Start-Up Firms, Howard E. Van Auken, Lynn Neeley

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This study examines the use of bootstrap financing for a sample of 78 firms in a Midwestern state. The results show that traditional sources of capital accounted for 65% of the firms' start-up capital and 35% of the start-up capital was obtained from bootstrap sources. A Chi-squared analysis indicates a significant difference between the percentage of (!) sole proprietorship versus other firms and (2) construction/manufacturing versus other types of firms using bootstrap financing as compared to traditional sources of financing when bootstrap financing comprised at least 60% of the total start-up capital. No significant difference was found between the percentage …

Histomorphological Responses Of Red Shiner (Cyprinella Lutrensis) To Atrazine, Terbufos, And Their Mixture, Ibrahim A. Messaad Dec 1996

Histomorphological Responses Of Red Shiner (Cyprinella Lutrensis) To Atrazine, Terbufos, And Their Mixture, Ibrahim A. Messaad

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Alterations of normal histomorphology of fish tissues, behavior, and thermal tolerance are recognized by environmental toxicologists and fish biologists as powerful tools indicating diverse biochemical and physiological changes. Toxicity of atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-1,3,5-triazine), terbufos (S-(((1,1-dimethyl-ethyl)thio)methyl)O,O-diethyl phosphorodithioate), and their mixture to red shiner (Cyprinella lutrensis) at 23$\sp\circ$C and 30$\sp\circ$C was investigated in 14-d bioassays after 14-d acclimation. During the bioassays, fish behavior, indications of toxicosis, and external anomalies were observed. After the bioassays, the critical thermal maximum (CTM) was determined. Fish also were preserved for examinations of gill, liver, and kidney tissues using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). SEM …

Literature Alive: Connecting To Story Through The Arts, J. Lea Smith, J. Daniel Herring Dec 1996

Literature Alive: Connecting To Story Through The Arts, J. Lea Smith, J. Daniel Herring

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

"How can I create 'living' experiences that will support my students to explore the 'layers' of meaning in a story? What type of learning activity supports students to build personal 'connections' with a story?" We, along with language arts teachers, face these questions as we collaborate to develop literature studies. Our uncertainty seems to imply confusion as to whether we should emphasize story comprehension, reading skills, or a personal connection as the basis.

Be Ready For The Censorship Challenge, Linda Mixon Clary

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In using a large variety of materials with readers and urging them to read widely, educators must realize that they will likely encounter problems with censorship. People for the American Way reported a new high in the number of cases reported in the United States in 1994 with a total of 760 incidents, a trend that has been in effect over the past twenty years (Simmons, 1994).

Case Study Analysis In Reding/Language Arts: Getting To The "Nitty-Gritty", Janet H. Towell

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

On the first day of class in a graduate reading assessment and evaluation course, my students were asked to formulate a list of questions in cooperative groups that should be considered when doing a case study on a student to assess his or her skills and abilities including strengths and needs in read ing/language arts. They were asked to think of any areas of concern that may affect the student's academic performance such as social or emotional factors. The following table of 20 questions was compiled by this group of 16 inservice teachers with varying levels of experience and expertise. …

Using Vocabulary Studies To Teach Contextual Analysis In Grade Four, Susan M. Watts, Julie Bucknam Dec 1996

Using Vocabulary Studies To Teach Contextual Analysis In Grade Four, Susan M. Watts, Julie Bucknam

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Increasingly, researchers are calling for four strands to comprise the elementary school vocabulary program: direct instruction in the meanings of individual words, the improvement of students' independent word learning strategies, motivation for word learning, and many opportunities for wide reading (Irvin, 1990; Graves, 1995). Strategies for independent word learning are particularly important because wide reading offers students the opportunity to learn as many as 3,000 word per year if they can successfully apply structural analysis and contextual analysis to the new words they encounter (Anderson, 1995).

Assessment Of The Status Of Harbor Porpoise (Phocoena Phocoena) In Oregon And Washington Waters, S. Osmek, J. Calambokidis, J. Laake, P. Gearin, R. Delong, J. Scordino, S. Jeffries, R. Brown Dec 1996

Assessment Of The Status Of Harbor Porpoise (Phocoena Phocoena) In Oregon And Washington Waters, S. Osmek, J. Calambokidis, J. Laake, P. Gearin, R. Delong, J. Scordino, S. Jeffries, R. Brown

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The status of harbor porpoise, Phocoena phocoena, is reviewed for stocks in Oregon and Washington waters, and the adjacent transboundary waters of southern British Columbia, Canada, emphasizing the most recent data on their geographic range, population structure, distribution, population size, trends in abundance, and reproductive biology. This information is used to determine if the annual rate of incidental mortality and serious injury in gill-net fisheries from 1990-94 could be at a biologically significant level.

In the eastern North Pacific Ocean, harbor porpoise are found near the coast, generally in water depths of less than 200 m. Differences in harbor porpoise …

Constraints On The Minimal Supergravity Model From Non-Standard Vacua, Howard Baer, Michal Brhlik, Diego Castano Dec 1996

Constraints On The Minimal Supergravity Model From Non-Standard Vacua, Howard Baer, Michal Brhlik, Diego Castano

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

We evaluate regions of parameter space in the minimal supergravity model where "unbounded from below" (UFB) or charge or color-breaking minima (CCB) occur. Our analysis includes the most important terms from the one-loop effective potential. We note a peculiar discontinuity of results depending on how renormalization group improvement is performed: One case leads to a UFB potential throughout the model parameter space, while the other typically agrees quite well with similar calculations performed using only the tree level potential. We compare our results with constraints from cosmology and naturalness and find a preferred region of parameter space which implies m …
