Is There Time For Elementary School Science?, Sharon K. Coltvet

Graduate Research Papers

I was made acutely aware of the lack of science education in the elementary grades during a spring, 1995, class at the University of Northern Iowa, entitled Analysis and Improvement of Science in the Elementary Classroom. Currently in American schools, elementary science classes receive a mere 10% of the instructional time (Abell & Roth, 1992). As an elementary teacher of 25 years in second, third and fourth grades, I know this was true in my classroom as well as being a generally accepted practice among other elementary teachers. During my preservice preparation the emphasis of college training and student teaching …

Tumor-Host Interaction: Mechanisms Leading To Augmentation Of Antitumor Immunity, Sampa Santra

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It was previously reported from our laboratory (Chakrabarti et al., Cell. Immunol. 142:54, 1992, ibid 144:455, 1992) that in a murine B-lymphoma model, 2C3, idiotype-specific cytotoxic T cells (CTLs) are generated in mice following hyperimmunization with irradiated tumor cells, and that they are effective in tumor rejection. The present study focused on the following: (a) does live tumor evoke CTL response as does the killed tumor (b) how does cell-mediated immunity during tumor growth differ from that induced by vaccination with killed tumor and (c) what is the nature of antigenic idiotype recognized by CTL? The present study reveals that …

Relationships Among Measures Used In The Assessment Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Suellyn Marie Mahan Jan 1996

Relationships Among Measures Used In The Assessment Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Suellyn Marie Mahan

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Subjects consisted of 107 children with ADHD symptoms. All children were off medication at the time of the evaluation for ADHD symptoms. The relationship among scores from the Continuous Performance Test (CPT), the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT), and the attention problem factor scale of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was examined. A principal-components analysis with varimax rotation was used to determine the number of factors that accounted for the majority of the variance in the data set. Results of the study indicated that commission error scores related significantly with slow mean hit reaction time, poor ability to discriminate targets …

Clinical Utility Of The Smell Identification Test In Differentiating Persons With Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type From Depressed Elderly And Elderly Controls, Theodore Lynn Moretz Jan 1996

Clinical Utility Of The Smell Identification Test In Differentiating Persons With Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type From Depressed Elderly And Elderly Controls, Theodore Lynn Moretz

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accurate differential diagnosis between Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type (DAT) and depression is important in providing appropriate treatment to persons suffering from each of these disorders; however, accurately differentiating between these disorders is often problematic. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Smell Identification Test (SIT) could accurately distinguish between persons with DAT; depressed, non-demented elderly; and elderly controls. The sample consisted of three groups of 30 white subjects matched for age, gender, and smoking behavior. Group I consisted of persons with early DAT. Group II consisted of persons diagnosed as suffering from depression and Group III …

This essay explores the apparent triumph of the individual of classical liberalism in Supreme Court decision making. Our analysis examines the particular way in which this political imagery of the individual interacts with judicial assumptions about important social institutions: the family, religion, media, and the state. What is revealed is the judicial adoption of an intricate social and political map in which abstract individualism combines with, and often masks, traditional, conservative images of social order and moral choice.

School-Business Partnerships In Georgia: Awareness And Attitudes Of Secondary School Principals, Paul M. Brinson Jr. Jan 1996

School-Business Partnerships In Georgia: Awareness And Attitudes Of Secondary School Principals, Paul M. Brinson Jr.

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

School-business partnerships have been analyzed, criticized and evaluated by many writers and researchers but seldom examined at the school site level. In this descriptive study, which is a replication with modifications of a previous study by W. E. Cummins, 314 Georgia secondary school principals were surveyed to determine their attitudes and awareness toward the school-business partnership process at the school site level. Respondents were compared by community size, geographic location, age, educational level, and experience level. The survey instrument was designed in a trifold pamphlet style and contained 24 items related to attitudes and awareness and 8 items requesting demographic …

Reproductive Ecology Of Pinckneya Bracteata (Bartram) Raflnesque (Rubiaceae), George H. Rountree Jan 1996

Reproductive Ecology Of Pinckneya Bracteata (Bartram) Raflnesque (Rubiaceae), George H. Rountree

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Pinckneya bracteata is a small tree or large shrub that is indigenous to the coastal plain of extreme southern South Carolina, Georgia, and northern Florida. It in occurs in sunny, wet habitats and in small populations that are usually separated by distances of kilometers. This study examined the mating, dispersal, and germination systems of the species. Pinckneya bracteata was found to be protandrous and self incompatible. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and bumblebees ( Bombus spp. appear to be the primary pollinators. Seed fall velocity is important to the wind dispersal of seeds and decreases as seed size increases. Fall velocity is also …

Changing Times: The Apa At Fifty, Peter L. Strauss

Faculty Scholarship

In early October 1995, Walter Gellhorn helped to open a National Archives display commemorating the fiftieth birthday of the Administrative Procedure Act ("APA"). That Act had begun to take shape just prior to World War II, when Gellhorn had directed the Attorney General's Committee on Administrative Procedure. Created in response to a political spasm of legislative activity that produced a "reform" bill President Roosevelt vetoed, Gellhorn's committee engaged in a thorough and careful survey of administrative agencies and their procedures. In the end, the committee produced twenty-seven monographs describing the variety of decision-making processes employed by the agencies and a …

Characterization Of Ionizing Radiation Sensitive (Irs) Mutants Of Deinococcus Radiodurans R1., Kumaraswamy S. Udupa Jan 1996

Characterization Of Ionizing Radiation Sensitive (Irs) Mutants Of Deinococcus Radiodurans R1., Kumaraswamy S. Udupa

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Deinococcus radiodurans is extremely resistant to ionizing radiation and can withstand 5 kGy $\gamma$ radiation without loss of viability or evidence of mutation. Available evidence argues that an efficient DNA repair mechanism is responsible for the resistance these organisms possess to ionizing radiation. The enzymes which coordinate DNA repair in D. radiodurans are poorly characterized. Two new loci have been detected in D. radiodurans, namely, irrB and irrI which provide resistance. Mutational inactivation of either locus resulted in a partial loss of resistance to ionizing radiation. The extent of sensitivity was locus specific and differentially affected by inactivation of the …
