A Fast Parallel Implementation Of The Wavelet Packet Best Basis Algorithm On The Mp-2 For Real-Time Mri, Sumit Chawla, Dennis M. Healy Jr Oct 1996

A Fast Parallel Implementation Of The Wavelet Packet Best Basis Algorithm On The Mp-2 For Real-Time Mri, Sumit Chawla, Dennis M. Healy Jr

Computer Science Technical Reports

Adaptive signal representations such as those determined by best-basis type algorithms have found extensive application in image processing, although their use in real-time applications may be limited by the complexity of the algorithm. In contrast to the wavelet transform which can be computed in O(n) time, the full wavelet packet expansion required for the standard best basis search takes O(n log n) time to compute. In the parallel world, however, both transforms take O(log n) to compute when the number of processors equal the number of data elements, making the wavelet packet expansion attractive to implement. This note describes near …

Cloning Of Human Acetyl-Coa Carboxylase-Beta And Its Unique Features., Joohun Ha, Jung-Kee Lee, Kyung-Sup Kim, Lee A. Witters, Ki-Han Kim

Dartmouth Scholarship

Acetyl-CoA carboxylase, which has a molecular mass of 265 kDa (ACC-alpha), catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the biosynthesis of long-chain fatty acids. In this study we report the complete amino acid sequence and unique features of an isoform of ACC with a molecular mass of 275 kDa (ACC-beta), which is primarily expressed in heart and skeletal muscles. In these tissues, ACC-beta may be involved in the regulation of fatty acid oxidation, rather than fatty acid biosynthesis. ACC-beta contains an amino acid sequence at the N terminus which is about 200 amino acids long and may be uniquely related to the …

Guideway Transit And Intermodalism - Data Book 1: Profiles Of U.S. Urbanized Areas With Guideway Transit Systems, Mitchell P. York

CUTR Research Reports

This report is one of three data books prepared as part oi the study titled Guideway Transit and Intermodalism: Function and Effectiveness. This data book provides a comprehensive overview of demographic, journey-to-work, employment, economic, and geographic characteristics for U.S. urbanized areas with guideway transit. Data extracted from the 1990 U.S. Census are compiled into two major sections. The transit section compares all the urbanized areas through a series of data rankings. The characteristics of each urbanized area are profiled graphically in the second section. This report is intended to serve as a reference book for urbanized areas currently operating fixed …

Internships: Academic Learning Outcomes, Regina Grantz, Marilyn Thomas Oct 1996

Internships: Academic Learning Outcomes, Regina Grantz, Marilyn Thomas

Higher Education

Proponents of experiential learning have long recognized the learning benefits students can achieve through internships, service-learning experiences, and co-ops. There are others, however, who see those experiences as "career exploration," "good for the resume," but not integral to academic learning and so, not valid for the earning of academic credit. Even if internships are viewed as a valid component of the learning cycle (Kolb), what do we expect students to learn? How do we articulate outcomes that relate to a student's discipline major or to a liberal arts curriculum? Finally, how can we assess whether a student is meeting the …

Preserving Dynamic Systems: Wetlands, Ecology And Law, Alyson C. Flournoy Oct 1996

Preserving Dynamic Systems: Wetlands, Ecology And Law, Alyson C. Flournoy

UF Law Faculty Publications

Ecology has advanced human understanding of natural systems considerably over the course of this century. Wetlands law and policy have evolved in response to our increased understanding of wetlands and the many benefits we derive from them. Notwithstanding this shift in policy and law, roughly 50% of the wetlands that existed in the continental United States in colonial times have been lost or degraded largely as a result of recent human activity. Current policies struggle to reconcile the goal of preventing further loss with the pervasive concern for making our laws more efficient.

This essay explores the lessons ecology offers …

Procedurally Rational Decision-Making And Control, Richard L. Frost, Michael A. Goodrich, Wynn C. Stirling Oct 1996

Procedurally Rational Decision-Making And Control, Richard L. Frost, Michael A. Goodrich, Wynn C. Stirling

Faculty Publications

Substantive rationality requires a decision-maker to be a utility maximizer; under this paradigm, the decision is paramount, and not dependent on the computational process used to obtain it. Procedural rationality is dependent on the method used to make the decision; reasonableness of the procedure is paramount. Well-formed problems are amenable to substantive rationality; ill-formed problems are not, but are amenable to procedural rationality. To qualify as being procedurally rational, a methodology must possess a sound epistemological basis, it must be amenable to a formal design synthesis procedure, and it must be consistent with substantive rationality. Epistemic utility theory forms the …

A Cytoplasmic Male Sterility-Associated Mitochondrial Protein Causes Pollen Disruption In Transgenic Tobacco, Shichuan He, Andre R. Abad, Stanton B. Gelvin, Sally Ann Mackenzie Oct 1996

A Cytoplasmic Male Sterility-Associated Mitochondrial Protein Causes Pollen Disruption In Transgenic Tobacco, Shichuan He, Andre R. Abad, Stanton B. Gelvin, Sally Ann Mackenzie

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

In higher plants, dominant mitochondrial mutations are associated with pollen sterility. This phenomenon is known as cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS). It is thought that the disruption in pollen development is a consequence of mitochondrial dysfunction. To provide definitive evidence that expression of an abnormal mitochondrial gene can interrupt pollen development, a CMS-associated mitochondrial DNA sequence from common bean, orf239, was introduced into the tobacco nuclear genome. Several transformants containing the orf239M gene constructs, with or without a mitochondrial targeting sequence, exhibited a semisterile or male-sterile phenotype. Expression of the gene fusions in transformed anthers was confirmed using RNA gel …

Expression And Characterization Of An Rna Capping Enzyme Encoded By Chlorella Virus Pbcv-1, C. Kiong Ho, James L. Van Etten, Stewart Shuman Oct 1996

Expression And Characterization Of An Rna Capping Enzyme Encoded By Chlorella Virus Pbcv-1, C. Kiong Ho, James L. Van Etten, Stewart Shuman

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

We report that the A103R protein of Chlorella virus PBCV-1 is an mRNA capping enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of GMP from GTP to the 5’ diphosphate end of RNA. This is a two-step reaction in which the enzyme first condenses with GTP to form a covalent enzyme-GMP intermediate and then transfers the GMP to an RNA acceptor to form a GpppN cap. Purified recombinant A103R is a 38-kDa monomer that lacks RNA (guanine-7-) methyltransferase activity. With respect to its size, amino acid sequence, and biochemical properties, A103R is more closely related to the yeast RNA guanylyltransferases than it is …
