Corals Of The South-West Indian Ocean Iv. The Hard Coral Family Faviidae Gregory, 1900 (Scleractinia: Faviina), Bernhard Riegl

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

This annotated check-list deals with the scleractinian coral family Faviidae in subtropical south-east Africa (the African mainland coast south of the Tropic of Capricorn). Material from the atoll Bassas da India in the Mozambique channel was included. Most species are of wide Indo-Pacific distribution. The faviid fauna of Mozambique was richer (28 species) than the South African fauna (21 species). The fauna of Bassas da India was similar to that on the African mainland coast with four additional species. South-east Africa has a moderately rich faviid fauna compared with other areas in the Indo-Pacific region. Field and laboratory characteristics are …

Bacillus Thuringiensis Hd-73 Spores Have Surface-Localized Cry1ac Toxin: Physiological And Pathogenic Consequences, Cheng Du, Kenneth Nickerson Oct 1996

Bacillus Thuringiensis Hd-73 Spores Have Surface-Localized Cry1ac Toxin: Physiological And Pathogenic Consequences, Cheng Du, Kenneth Nickerson

Papers in Microbiology

Spores from Cry+ strains of Bacillus thuringiensis bound fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled antibodies specific for the 65-kDa activated Cry 1Ac toxin, whereas spores from Bacillus cereus and Cry- strains of B. thuringiensis did not. The Cry+ spores could be activated for germination by alkaline conditions (pH 10.3), whereas Cry- spores could not. Once the surrounding exosporia had been removed or permeabilized, Cry+ spores were able to bind the toxin receptor(s) from insect gut brush border membrane vesicle preparations, and their germination rates were increased ca. threefold in the presence of brush border membrane vesicles. A model is …

Review Of Conservation Of Great Plains Ecosystems: Current Science, Future Options, Edited By S. R. Johnson And Aziz Bouzaher, David J. Wishart Oct 1996

Review Of Conservation Of Great Plains Ecosystems: Current Science, Future Options, Edited By S. R. Johnson And Aziz Bouzaher, David J. Wishart

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This book stems from a symposium entitled "Conservation of Great Plains Ecosystems: Current Science, Future Options" held in Kansas City in April of 1993, the purpose of which was to forge a "Great Plains regional environmental initiative." The editors explain what this means in an introduction that also summarizes the book's contents and offers recommendations: only with integrated community-based management of identifiable ecosystems, they argue, can the Great Plains avoid further severe ecological distress. The most highly touted word in the volume is "sustainability," the most castigated, "monoculture." And who could disagree with that?

Conservation of Great Plains Ecosystems is …

Review Of An Illustrated Guide To Endangered Or Threatened Species In Kansas By Joseph T. Collins, Suzanne L. Collins, Jerry Horak, Dan Mulhern, William Busby, Craig C. Freeman, And Gary Wallace, Michael A. Mares

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This is a handsome little volume offering information on the status and biology of all of the sixty species of Kansas plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates listed by the state or by federal statutes as threatened or endangered. The book begins with a one-page introduction stating the authors' goal of producing a single volume to provide ready access to information on all legally designated protected species in Kansas. In this the authors are successful. The introduction is followed by a brief history of how a species comes to be considered either threatened or endangered, as well as a complete list of …

A Methodology For The Prediction Of The Empennage In-Flight Loads Of A General Aviation Aircraft Using Backpropagation Neural Networks, Maciej Marciniak Oct 1996

A Methodology For The Prediction Of The Empennage In-Flight Loads Of A General Aviation Aircraft Using Backpropagation Neural Networks, Maciej Marciniak

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Backpropagation neural networks have been used to predict strain resulting from the maneuver in-flight loads in the empennage structure of a Cessna 172P. The purpose of this research was to develop a methodology for the prediction of strain in the tail section of a general aviation aircraft and to determine the minimum set of sensors necessary to adequately train the neural networks. Linear accelerometer, angular accelerometer, rate gyro, and strain gage signals were collected in flight using DAQBook portable data acquisition system for dutch-roll, roll, sideslip left, sideslip right, stabilized g turn left, stabilized g turn right, and push-pull maneuvers …

Evaluation Of Sampling Resolution In Coral Stable Isotope Records: A Case Study Using Records From New Caledonia And Tarawa, Terrence M. Quinn, Frederick W. Taylor, Thomas J. Crowley, Suzanne M. Link Oct 1996

Evaluation Of Sampling Resolution In Coral Stable Isotope Records: A Case Study Using Records From New Caledonia And Tarawa, Terrence M. Quinn, Frederick W. Taylor, Thomas J. Crowley, Suzanne M. Link

Marine Science Faculty Publications

We have generated a 40‐year‐long, monthly stable isotope record from a Porites lutea coral collected offshore of Amedee, New Caledonia (22°S, 167°E) to investigate the relation between sampling resolution in coral isotope studies and retrieval of sea‐surface environmental information. We interpret the high correlation between our oxygen isotope record and a twenty‐year long sea‐surface temperature record at the monthly timescale (r=0.88) to indicate that our coral isotope record is an accurate monitor of environmental conditions offshore of Amedee. The character of the signal and the percent variance explained in the record at the annual band, at the quasi‐biennial oscillation band …
