The Physical Therapist's Role In Sexual Education Of People With Spinal Cord Injury During Inpatient Rehabilitation, Karen Ellexson

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore the physical therapist's role in sexual education of spinal cord injured patients during inpatient rehabilitation. Descriptive data were collected by questionnaire from 72 licensed physical therapists working in CARF accredited inpatient spinal cord injury units. The results indicated that although therapists rated sexual education as an important and appropriate topic in physical therapy, they addressed sexual issues only 46% of the time and initiated these discussions only 30% of the time. Significant correlation was present between the frequency of addressing and initiating discussions of sexuality and the therapists' preparedness and comfort level …

Assessment And Treatment Of Domestic Violence In A Substance Abuse Setting, Carlo Defazio Jan 1996

Assessment And Treatment Of Domestic Violence In A Substance Abuse Setting, Carlo Defazio

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Domestic violence and substance abuse have come to the forefront of the public's awareness in the last decade. This document focuses on the simultaneous occurrence of these phenomena and proposes that providers reconcile any possible differences in treatment and collaborate, if not integrate services. Providers must move beyond their respective theoretical approaches and form a new transtheoretical delivery approach to treatment in order to provide the best possible outcomes for clients. Additionally, while the document assumes that substance abuse programs are offering appropriate assessment and treatment to their clients, it seeks to further heighten their awareness to issues concerning domestic …

A Year In Practice: The Journal Of A Reflective Clinician, Stacy Caplow Jan 1996

A Year In Practice: The Journal Of A Reflective Clinician, Stacy Caplow

Clinical Law Review

According to the old saw, "those who can't do, teach." For a year in 1992-1993, I set out to prove to myself that those who teach can too do. Thanks to an obscure provision in the regulations of the United States Attorney's Office, and with the cooperation and encouragement of both my Dean and the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, I was able to spend a year as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the Civil Division litigating a wide variety of cases ranging from the most mundane to the most sophisticated. This bus …

Clinical Law Review

Ida Brown was eighty-six, increasingly confused and physically ill. Two doctors, including her treating physician, certified that she was incompetent. The social services department sought the appointment of a guardian for her, in order to sell her home in which she had lived for forty-seven years and put her in a nursing home. Ms. Brown told her student attorneys to tell the guardianship court she wanted to be left alone. One of the students thought the law clinic should consent to the appointment of a guardian. His supervisor disagreed, arguing that the clinic should develop an in-home care plan, but …

Guardians: A Research Note, Lawrence M. Friedman, Joanna L. Grossman, Chris Guthrie Jan 1996

Guardians: A Research Note, Lawrence M. Friedman, Joanna L. Grossman, Chris Guthrie

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Guardianship is among the least-noticed, least-discussed institutions of the working legal system. For the most part, guardianship is an arrangement that concerns minors who come into a bit of property, or (at times) a lot of it. Guardianship is also an arrangement for managing the affairs of those deemed insane or incompetent. In guardianship proceedings, courts (exercising the parens patriae power of the state) appoint "substitute parents" for "wards" who are insane, incompetent, or simply too young, and who have no one to care for them or their property. Like conservators, trustees, executors, and administrators of estates, guardians are fiduciaries …
