Socioeconomic Processes Of Land Degradation In Guadalajara Province (Spain), Jose Domingo Garcia Perez Jan 1996

Socioeconomic Processes Of Land Degradation In Guadalajara Province (Spain), Jose Domingo Garcia Perez

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Despite the great growth and interest in the study of socioeconomic processes of land degradation in many parts of the world, relatively little attention has been paid to these in Spain. Foresters play an important part in the national strategy to solve the problems of land degradation. It might be expected that after the changes which restored political democracy in Spain in the late 1970s, a reorganization of the way the planning and implementation of soil and water conservation projects through reforestation would be effected. The reforestation agencies of the Government could have improved the effectiveness of conservation by acknowledging …

The Composite Scene: The Aesthetics Of Igbo Mask Theatre, Victor Ikechukwu Ukaegbu Jan 1996

The Composite Scene: The Aesthetics Of Igbo Mask Theatre, Victor Ikechukwu Ukaegbu

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

An observation of mask performances in Igboland in South-Eastern Nigeria reveals distinctions among displays from various communities. This is the product of a democratic society which encourages individualism and at the same time, sustains collectivism. This feature of Igbo masking has enriched and populated the Igbo theatrical scene with thousands of diverse and seemingly unconnected masking displays. Though these peculiarities do not indicate conceptual differences or imperfections, the numerous Igbo dialects and sub-cultural differences have not helped matters. Earlier studies by social anthropologists and a few theatre practitioners followed these differentials by focusing on particular masking types and sections of …

The Application Of Network Analysis To The Study Of Differentially Effective Schools., Maryann Maxwell Durland Jan 1996

The Application Of Network Analysis To The Study Of Differentially Effective Schools., Maryann Maxwell Durland

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study applied network analysis to the exploration of the structural characteristics of differentially effective elementary schools within the framework of school effectiveness research. The study took place in two parts: a Pilot Study, using archived data, and a Field Study, using data from a stratified sample of differentially effective schools. The Centrality-Cohesiveness Model of School Effectiveness, developed through the Pilot Study, defined a communication structure as a function of the leadership status of the principal (defined by the principal's centrality) and the cohesiveness of the faculty (defined as network density). Quantitative results from both the Pilot Study and the …

Approaches To Decision Making, Richard J. Mckenna Jan 1996

Approaches To Decision Making, Richard J. Mckenna

Research outputs pre 2011

This book is designed as a brief introduction to the understanding of decision making in work settings. It is designed for use in graduate courses and should be supported by a wide range of additional reading materials and practical exercises. The approach is multi-disciplinary and pluralistic: there are many perspectives from which decision making may be viewed. Similarly, there are many differences in decision making between individuals and between contexts.

The book is intended to contribute to a raised awareness of the many issues and high complexity attaching to important decisions. It may or may not help the reader to …

Rationality And The Foundations Of Positive Political Theory, Mathew D. Mccubbins, Michael F. Thies Jan 1996

Rationality And The Foundations Of Positive Political Theory, Mathew D. Mccubbins, Michael F. Thies

Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, we discuss and debunk the four most common critiques of the rational choice research program (which we prefer to call Positive Political Theory) by explaining and advocating its foundations: the rationality assumption, component analysis (abstraction), strategic behavior, and theory building, in turn. We argue that the rationality assumption and component analysis, properly understood, can be seen to underlie all social science, despite the protestations of critics. We then discuss the two ways that PPT most clearly contributes to political science (i.e., what distinguishes it from other research programs), namely the introduction of strategic behavior (people do not …

Using Statistics To Analyze The Ancient Egyptian Scarab, Sarah C. Guthmann Jan 1996

Using Statistics To Analyze The Ancient Egyptian Scarab, Sarah C. Guthmann

Nebraska Anthropologist

The University of Nebraska State Museum (UNSM) houses a significant collection of nearly 100 ancient Egyptian scarabs. The collection is a wonderfully diverse group, providing examples of different usage and stylistic conventions, as well as spanning several periods of ancient Egyptian history (from the First Intermediate Period to the late New Kingdom). The scarabs vary in size, type of inscription they bear. and materials from which they were produced. This study statistically demonstrates that assignments of specific dimensions of scarab size and particular inscription types were not random occurrences. nor was the employment of certain materials and particular inscription types …

National Language Policy In The United States: A Holistic Perspective, Cody L. Knutson Jan 1996

National Language Policy In The United States: A Holistic Perspective, Cody L. Knutson

Nebraska Anthropologist

English is not the official national language of the United States of America. However, this issue has often come to the forefront of many political debates, since language encompasses a wide array of political, economic and various other social implications. Acknowledging the right to the retention of local culture, a historical and cross-cultural study of language policy is interpreted to justify a limitation on the number of languages at the national political level if flexibility is maintained for individual states to adjust to the needs of their constituencies.

Intellectual Property Rights: A Focus On Photography Of Native Americans, Jennifer Wiggins Jan 1996

Intellectual Property Rights: A Focus On Photography Of Native Americans, Jennifer Wiggins

Nebraska Anthropologist

In 1990, many believed that Native Americans were aided in their fight for equality and justice with the passing of the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). This act did not, however, include items of intellectual property such as photographs. It is now vitally important, as we enter the technological age, that Native Americans regain control of their images, beliefs, and religion that are captured on film. However, it is not feasible that all photographs depicting Native Americans can be returned. Those to which they do have a viable reclaimance are the photographs that show private religious …

Narrating The Pathological, 1837-1848: Revolution And Social Discourse In Carlyle, Dickens, And Gaskell., Scott Aaron Dransfield Jan 1996

Narrating The Pathological, 1837-1848: Revolution And Social Discourse In Carlyle, Dickens, And Gaskell., Scott Aaron Dransfield

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Published during the years that mark the English working-class movement known as Chartism, Thomas Carlyle's French Revolution (1837), Charles Dickens' Barnaby Rudge (1841), and Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton (1848) all present a picture of social revolt. The scenes depicted in these narratives (all of which are based upon historical events--respectively, the French Revolution, the 1780 Gordon Riots in London, and the Chartist rebellion after the failure of the first petition in 1839) strongly suggest that the act of social revolt stems not so much from radical strategies of political action as from the proliferation of a set of dangerous "passions" …

The Search For Relevance In The Kenyan Secondary School History: A Case Study Of How The Struggle For Kenyan Independence Is Examined., Ochieng' Olewe K'Olewe Jan 1996

The Search For Relevance In The Kenyan Secondary School History: A Case Study Of How The Struggle For Kenyan Independence Is Examined., Ochieng' Olewe K'Olewe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Kenyan government has continuously recognized the potential socialization role of Kenya's history, in particular the topic on Kenya's struggle for independence, as a means of engendering a sense of national consciousness among students. This case study focuses on how this struggle is examined in the current secondary history syllabus, as part of the effort to formulate and implement a relevant syllabus. A qualitative case study design was used to facilitate the study. Consequently, the findings and results are based on the analysis of a triangulation of data, which was collected in Kenya, through interviews, observations, and documents. There were …

The Original Constitution And Our Origins, John O. Mcginnis Jan 1996

The Original Constitution And Our Origins, John O. Mcginnis

Articles

The question why we should be bound by the original Constitution often is framed as why we should be guided by the dead hand of the past. The notion that this venerable document should be viewed as a possibly unfortunate constraint on our present potential as a society contains an implicit premise about man in history. According to this view, it is open to man to make his history in each generation through some collective cultural process. Given such a premise, it seems plausible to believe that each generation should enjoy the opportunity to decide anew whether to submit to …
