Male Involvement In Family Planning: A Challenge For The National Programme Workshop, National Institute Of Population Research And Training, Deutsche Gesellschaft Fur Technische Zusammenarbeit (Gtz), Population Council, Avsc International
Reproductive Health
The Bangladesh family planning (FP) program has achieved success in reducing fertility during the past decades, but male involvement is lagging behind. A two-day seminar on "Male Involvement in Family Planning: A Challenge for the National Programme" was held in Dhaka June 25–26, 1996. The objectives were to review research findings on methods currently used, determine male involvement policy and strategy, and formulate an action plan including IEC, counseling, and programmatic interventions. Speakers emphasized the need for more male involvement in FP and the prevailing misconceptions about male contraception that should be addressed with IEC programs. Participants felt that to …

Indonesia: Utilization Of Completed Operations Research Studies, Meiwita B. Iskandar, Subadra Indrawati
Reproductive Health
In the past eight years, many operations research (OR) programs were implemented in Indonesia to increase the availability, accessibility, and acceptability of services desired by family planning (FP) users. OR has also been employed to improve quality and sustainability by studying the performance, efficiency, and effectiveness of services delivered by providers. Nonetheless, relatively little is known about the true effects of OR studies in identifying and solving program problems in order to support the planning and coordinating of a particular program. Measuring utilization of OR results is not simple. In 1989, USAID signed its last bilateral assistance agreement with the …
Two 'Cop-Outs' In Faith-Learning Integration: Incarnational Integration And Worldviewish Integration, Ken Badley
Two 'Cop-Outs' In Faith-Learning Integration: Incarnational Integration And Worldviewish Integration, Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
There are at least six different approaches to integration adopted by educationalists in recent years. These interconnect and may partially overlap. Two kinds of confusion in talk of integration are identified, along with four other substantive questions that would-be faith-learning, integrationists need to address. Neither incarnational integration nor perspectival integration are adequate on their own. Evangelical and Reformed traditions are both at their best when they combine incarnational and perspectival in their efforts to integrate faith and learning.

Threads Of Time: Technique, Structure And Iconography In An Embroidered Mantle From Paracas, Mary Anne Dyer
Threads Of Time: Technique, Structure And Iconography In An Embroidered Mantle From Paracas, Mary Anne Dyer
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes the structure, technique and iconography of an embroidered burial mantle from Wari Kayan Necropolis on the Paracas Peninsula, Peru, which dates between approximately 100 B.C. and A.D. 100. The mantle is currently in the collection of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City (Accession no. 41.2/632), and will be referred to subsequently as the AMNH mantle. This study will consist of a structural analysis of the burial mantle, addressing the design of the textile and the iconography. In addition to examining the origin and iconography of the double-headed bird motif which appears throughout the …
Rethinking Our Rethinking Retrospectively: A Rejoinder To Spano, Mark Hickson Iii
Rethinking Our Rethinking Retrospectively: A Rejoinder To Spano, Mark Hickson Iii
Basic Communication Course Annual
After reading Spano's (1996) essay several times, I was struck by the title of the work in opposition to its substance. When I read "practical" approach in the title, I first thought that the discussion would progress (or regress) into the work of Watzlawick, Beavin, and Jackson (1967) and their "pragmatics," or perhaps even further back to the pragmatic philosophy of Peirce (Houser & Kloesel, 1992). However, nowhere in the paper did I find these works mentioned. As I reread the paper, I detected a vocabulary that was more reminiscent of phenomenology than pragmatism: "here-and-now," "situated communication action," "embodied persons," …

The Basic Course: A Means Of Protecting The Speech Communication Discipline, Charlene J. Handford
Basic Communication Course Annual
During the summer of 1995, Spectra included articles and news items regarding speech communication programs designated for elimination. Some leaders in the discipline warned that this trend would likely continue.
This article argues that departments of communication, operating under federal and state requirements for communication competency, may be well advised to work toward establishing the basic course as the sole fulfillment of their institutions' core requirement in communication and to plan a marketing strategy for their discipline. In addition, this paper suggests that the basic course, taught as public speaking, may be more easily defended in meeting the course requirement, …

Analytical Perspectives On A Protohistoric Cache Of Ceramic Jars From The Lower Colorado Desert, James Bayman, Richard Hevly, Boma Johnson, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard Ryan
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
A cache of hermetically sealed ceramic jars found in the Lower Colorado Desert was examined using chronometric dating, pollen and macrofossil extraction, design analysis, and water retention experimentation. The cache apparently dates to the protohistoric fifteenth through seventeenth centuries. Findings from these studies contribute to knowledge in four problem areas: (1) ceramic jar function and use-history; (2) storage technology and caching behavior; (3) ceramic dating and chronology; and (4) symbolic iconography. Biotic remains from inside the jars document their use for transporting a variety of riverine and desert plants, before they were finally filled with flowers and seeds, and placed …
Costs And Benefits Of Monogamy And Polygyny For Yanomamö Women, Raymond B. Hames
Costs And Benefits Of Monogamy And Polygyny For Yanomamö Women, Raymond B. Hames
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
In this paper I analyze some of the economic costs and benefits of monogamy and polygyny for Yanomamö women. The evolutionary ecological model of resource defense polygyny predicts that when female choice is operative females will choose those males who control resources that will maximize a female’s reproductive success. A female will choose a polygynous strategy (i.e., become a co-wife) if a currently married male has more resources to offer than other unmarried males or monogamous males. This model has been successfully used to predict polygynous mating in tribal societies where males are stratified in terms of their ownership or …
Ams Dating Of Plain Weave Sandals From The Central Colorado Plateau., Phil R. Geib
Ams Dating Of Plain Weave Sandals From The Central Colorado Plateau., Phil R. Geib
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
AMS radiocarbon dates on plain-weave sandals from caves of the central Colorado Plateau are reported. The sandals range in age from about 6900 to 3200 B.P. (ca. 5700-1450 cal. B.C.). The findings strengthen a case for both population and cultural continuity during the Archaic period, and support a related argument that middle Archaic break in the occupancy of several important shelters such as Cowboy Cave resulted from settlement pattern change and not regional abandonment. The dates demonstrate that living accumulations within some shelters of lower Glen Canyon resulted from Archaic foragers and not Puebloan farmers as previously claimed. Benchmark Cave, …
A Different Approach To Jurisprudence? Feminisms In German Legal Science, Legal Cultures, And The Ambivalence Of Law, Susanne Baer
A Different Approach To Jurisprudence? Feminisms In German Legal Science, Legal Cultures, And The Ambivalence Of Law, Susanne Baer
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The integration of feminist theories into legal science and education faces significant challenges, particularly in Germany, where institutional and cultural barriers have slowed progress compared to other countries like Norway, Denmark, and the U.S. While feminist approaches have made inroads elsewhere, Germany remains hesitant, with the question of whether feminism belongs in legal education still unanswered. The tension between feminist perspectives and traditional legal methodologies, coupled with structural academia challenges, underscores the difficulty of achieving meaningful integration.
On The History Of Fathers' Rights And Mothers' Duty Of Care, Sibylla Flügge
On The History Of Fathers' Rights And Mothers' Duty Of Care, Sibylla Flügge
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article examines the historical evolution of custody rights in Germany, focusing on the shift from maternal preference to increasing recognition of fathers' rights. It argues that the legal system's move toward joint custody and equal parental rights reflects broader societal changes in gender roles, while also critiquing the potential backlash against women's emancipation. The analysis highlights how improvements in fathers' legal standing have often coincided with decreased obligations for men to actively care for children, raising concerns about the practical implications for mothers and children.

No Longer Children, Not Yet Adults: Adolescence In The Fiction Of L.M. Montgomery, Cathlin M. Davis
No Longer Children, Not Yet Adults: Adolescence In The Fiction Of L.M. Montgomery, Cathlin M. Davis
Honors Papers
Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, in 1874. She did not live there her whole life, but it held an important place in her life. The Island was a constant presence in her fiction, and only one of her 23 novels is set completely away from it. Montgomery has long been considered solely a children's writer, though two of her books were written for an adult audience, and the majority of her work holds appeal for a general audience. She remains largely unknown by scholars, but has come under some critical scrutiny with the recent growth …
"Nyatiti Is My People": Music And The Reconstruction Of Culture Among The Luo Of Western Kenya, Ian Eagleson
"Nyatiti Is My People": Music And The Reconstruction Of Culture Among The Luo Of Western Kenya, Ian Eagleson
Honors Papers
In this thesis I contend that experiencing music is a fundamental activity in the realization of cultural identity. Music reinforces cultural identity by enacting significant forms and practices that embody meaning, meaning particular to the identity of a culture. When people hear music that is significant in their culture it excites certain feelings in them which reinforce and regenerate their identity with that culture. Participation in music is a condition that evokes a vivid impression in the participant like no other activity in social life. Functionally, this impression may reinforce themes impressed on actors in other ways; however, the way …
Meat And Potatoes: Recipes For A Range Of Egalitarianism In Three Hunter-Gatherer Societies, Amy Vlassia Margaris
Meat And Potatoes: Recipes For A Range Of Egalitarianism In Three Hunter-Gatherer Societies, Amy Vlassia Margaris
Honors Papers
Throughout most of human history our ancestors lived by hunting and gathering. Only within the last ten to fifteen thousand years have alternative forms of social organization developed, duly labeled by anthropologists and archaeologists: agricultural, pastoral, and complex state societies, lineal tribes, and a host of other terms which pass in and out of favor in our ongoing (and inescapably human) attempts to categorize our own kind.
Classification lies at the heart of science, and anthropology is certainly no exception. However, categorization of any degree (which requires generalization) runs the risk of obscuring important differences between cultural groups. The trick …

The Curriculum Of Consciousness: The Disciplines From The Greeks To Post-Modernity, Daniel Novak
Open Access Master's Theses
"The Curriculum of Consciousness" can be seen as one way of demonstrating how the progression of consciousness creates history, how humankind 'comes to' or awakes to its own nature. It is the story of how consciousness determines history and, coordinately, how history determines consciousness.
The focus of this historical-philosophical study is how the 'disciplines'- the arts, sciences and cultural pursuits in the widest sense (ranging from religion to commerce, technology, medicine and politics) -have been configured according to distinct priorities in the different eras of Western Civilization under the aegis of certain particular enterprises, i.e. philosophy among the Greeks, theology …

Katelyn's Emergent Literacy Story: A Case Study And Consolidated Literature Review Of The Development Of Literacy From Birth To Three Years., Sherrie Kimberly Wampler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
By definition, the study of emergent literacy must address the literacy development of children from "birth" to "conventional literacy." In actuality, studies of the literacy development of children between the ages of 2 and 4 have become common, while studies regarding literacy development of 1-year-olds is extremely limited and studies beginning at birth even fewer. Through this study, data regarding the language, reading, and writing behaviors of children from birth to three years is identified, consolidated, and confirmed. Two research questions guided this study: (1) What are the emergent literacy behaviors of a child from birth to three years? (2) …
Feminism For Men: Legal Ideology And The Construction Of Maleness, Nancy Levit
Feminism For Men: Legal Ideology And The Construction Of Maleness, Nancy Levit
Faculty Works
It may seem a little odd to suggest that feminist theory has overlooked men. Yet, in several important respects, apart from the role of culprit, men have been largely omitted from feminism. Feminist legal theorists have paid mild attention to the "Can men be feminists?" question but this issue is usually relegated to footnotes. The negative effect gender role stereotypes have on men is typically subsidiary to the main focus of feminist legal literature, which has concentrated on documenting the patterns of subordination of women and on questions of feminist ideology.
The primary purpose of this article is to suggest …

Anti-Essentialism, Relativism, And Human Rights , Tracy E. Higgins
Faculty Scholarship
Confronted with the challenge of cultural relativism, feminism faces divergent paths, neither of which seems to lead out of the woods of patriarchy. The first path, leading to simple tolerance of cultural difference, is too broad. To follow it would require feminists to ignore pervasive limits on women's freedom in the name of an autonomy that exists for women in theory only. The other path, leading to objective condemnation of cultural practices, is too narrow. To follow it would require feminists to dismiss the culturally distinct experiences of women as false consciousness. Yet to forge an alternative path is difficult, …
