An-Archy And Justice: An Introduction To Emmanuel Levinas's Political Thought., William Paul Simmons Jan 1996

An-Archy And Justice: An Introduction To Emmanuel Levinas's Political Thought., William Paul Simmons

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Emmanuel Levinas's political thought is best understood as a tension between an-archy and justice. Levinas claims that the aim of philosophy has most often been a search for an arche, or a neuter term that accounts for all of reality. Levinas argues that the reduction of reality to an arche obliterates all transcendence and subordinates man to a totality. Against the predominance of totality in the Western tradition, Levinas proposes a philosophy of transcendence. This transcendence is not found in the direct relationship with God, but in the face of the other person, the Other. Since the face of the …

Women's Perceptions Of Sexuality In Rural Giza, Hind Khattab

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This study on sexuality among women in rural Giza, Egypt, is part of a broader project on women's health and reproductive morbidity conducted by the Population Council’s Reproductive Health Working Group. Reproductive tract infections (RTIs) and other ailments associated with reproduction among women in the rural community surveyed suggest that a heavy burden of disease is being borne by women living in underprivileged areas in this region. This research on sexuality has been conducted within a conceptual framework that uses a socio-cultural approach to health and illness. The investigation is an assessment of women's perception of and knowledge about sexuality …

The Politics Of Undergraduate Curricula In A Downsizing Culture: A Primer For Department Chairs, Mark Hickson Iii Jan 1996

The Politics Of Undergraduate Curricula In A Downsizing Culture: A Primer For Department Chairs, Mark Hickson Iii

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses the political factors affecting the decision making regarding the curricula in higher education in the U.S. The courses taught in a department provide the campus community with a perception of the department, but curricular decisions must first be made within the department. The department should agree about a total number of courses in the curriculum. The department should have an understanding of administrative perspectives on curricula. Curricula development should be discussed with faculty in other departments that may feel communication studies in infringing on their subject matter.

Strategies For The Communications Unit: How Can We Become Central To The University And Its Mission?, Ellen Wartella Jan 1996

Strategies For The Communications Unit: How Can We Become Central To The University And Its Mission?, Ellen Wartella

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article presents the author's comments on reasons for the perception that communication units are not central to the University and its mission. First, our name itself is a problem. This can mean that one studies mass media, as I do, or it may refer to scholars of interpersonal communication, rhetorical analysis, cultural studies, organizational studies, or a variety of other subspecialties. Second, this lack of unity and intellectual diversity, often poses special political problems. The political battles across communication programs on campuses is only one of our on-campus political problems. Finally, perhaps at the root of our battles about …

The Role Of Non-Verbal Communication In The Maintenance Of Stratification By Gender And Race In America, Barbara Ann Dulaney

Theses

The research goal of the following culminating project is to identify the role of non-verbal communication in the maintenance of social stratification based on gender and race in America.

The first chapter seeks to clarify the two main components: social stratification and non-verbal communication. Social stratification is defined and a summary is given of several theories regarding stratification and of how, in various religious, political and social movements, it is a significant factor. The constituents of non-verbal communication are identified.

The second chapter reviews literature on the subject of general social stratification. In order to present a concise look at …

Bliss: The Man And The Classification, John A. Drobnicki Jan 1996

Bliss: The Man And The Classification, John A. Drobnicki

Publications and Research

This paper discusses the career of Henry Evelyn Bliss, founder of the Bibliographic Classification, which is currently being revised. Dissatisfied with the current classification systems, Bliss devised his own, which was based on a main class order that provided for collocation of related classes. Although not currently used in the United States, the Bibliographic Classification continues to be utilized by approximately 50 libraries in the United Kingdom. Advantages and criticisms are presented for Bliss's system, which is often praised in library science textbooks, yet seldom used as the trend in libraries has been to either the Dewey Decimal or the …

Categories And Culture: On The 'Rectification Of Names' In Comparative Law, Janet Ainsworth Jan 1996

Categories And Culture: On The 'Rectification Of Names' In Comparative Law, Janet Ainsworth

Faculty Articles

This article proposes a thorough ‘rectification of names’ take place in comparative legal studies, with a specific focus on Chinese law. Pioneering Chinese comparative law scholars focused on describing the Chinese legal system using Western legal terminology. The job of the second-generation of legal scholars, however, is to interpret both the primary source material and prior interpretations. There are many pitfalls entailed with studying non-Western law, foremost is the danger of one’s conceptual paradigms influencing an interpretation. Any culture’s legal order is uniquely tuned to a cultural context, and Chinese culture represents a social order with sufficient coherence for scholars …

Attitudes Of Undergraduate Students Toward Racial/Ethnic Issues And Groups At The University Of North Dakota., Marlene Ibrahim Bengiamin

"It All Depends On What You Mean By Home": Toward A Communitarian Theory Of The 'Nontraditional" Family, Barbara Bennett Woodhouse

Utah Law Review

This discussion leaves untouched the many dilemmas involved in distinguishing "kinships of responsibility" from "associations of choice." It also leaves untouched the dilemmas of how to deal with dependencies created within associations of choice. Can we regulate such supposedly autonomous arrangements without assimilating these arrangements to the status of legal families? How can we draw the lines of choice without diluting the meaning of family until it resembles a purely voluntary role, to be taken on and put off at will? All of these are issues for another day and another author. The more limited goal of this Article has …

Forging Responsible Unions: Metal Workers And The Rise Of The Labour Injunction In Canada, Eric Tucker, Judy Fudge Jan 1996

Forging Responsible Unions: Metal Workers And The Rise Of The Labour Injunction In Canada, Eric Tucker, Judy Fudge

Articles & Book Chapters

At the turn of the century, the legislative, administrative, and judicial branches of the Canadian state responded to the labour conflicts associated with the second industrial revolution by simultaneously expanding both their coercive and their facilitative roles. This paper examines one aspect of this development, the rise of the labour injunction, through a study of a series of strikes conducted chiefly by metal workers in south central Ontario between 1900 and 1914. In addition to retrieving the largely forgotten genealogy of a body of law that continues to play an important role in regulating and containing trade union activity, the …
