Cytogenetic And Isozyme Analysis Of Two Species Of North American Cyprinid Fishes : Rhinichthys Cataractae And Nocomis Micropogon From The Cheat River Drainages Of West Virginia, Syam B. Stoll
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Nocomos micropoqon and Rhinichthys cataractae are species of cyprinid fishes that may hybridize to produce a nominally described species Rhynichthys bowersi. Rhynichthys bowersi is a rare fish endemic to a few watersheds mostly in West Virginia, especially the Cheat River drainage. The resolution of its proper taxonomic status is presently a concern to state and federal regulatory agencies. A number of investigators have determined relatedness of cyprinid fishes by examining chromosomal structure. Telomeres and nucleolar organizer regions are chromosome structures used in inter and intraspecific phylogeny. In this study, fibroblasts from N. micropoqon and R. cataractae were first …
Influence Of Adjacent Seagrass On The Fish Assemblages Off Sandy Beaches, Matthew A. Vanderklift
Influence Of Adjacent Seagrass On The Fish Assemblages Off Sandy Beaches, Matthew A. Vanderklift
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
As we attempt to maintain marine biodiversity mainly by focussing on habitats, we need to understand how marine biodiversity is affected by seagrass loss. Although managers and researchers widely acknowledge that habitat loss results in changes to marine biodiversity, quantitative knowledge of these changes is generally poor. In this study, fish assemblages (as one component of the biodiversity of sandy beaches) were examined in Cockburn Sound, Western Australia, to assess patterns that may be related to presence or absence of adjacent seagrass beds, If consistent patterns are evident, they may enable predictions regarding the effects of seagrass loss on the …

Civil Forfeiture And The War On Drugs: Lessons From Economics And History, Donald J. Boudreaux, Adam C. Pritchard
Civil Forfeiture And The War On Drugs: Lessons From Economics And History, Donald J. Boudreaux, Adam C. Pritchard
Articles
This Article uses economic analysis to show how civil forfeiture’s role in the war on drugs creates contrary incentives for law enforcement officials and encourages abuses. The Article then reviews the history of civil forfeiture and the Supreme Court’s forfeiture jurisprudence, which seems incoherent. The Authors warn that the judiciary should be skeptical of civil forfeiture and its importance to the war on drugs. The Article proposes a constitutional framework, grounded in economics and history, to limit forfeiture abuses.

The idea of a "favorite judicial opinion" had never occurred to me until the Texas Law Review planted it in my head; the Journal of the American Dental Association could as well have asked me to express some sentiments about my favorite toothache. I was at a loss to think of even a single candidate for what, until the event, I had apparently regarded as a nonexistent office. Why then did I decide to accept the Review's invitation? The answer is, in a word, curiosity: Never mind that the editors of a law review in Texas wanted to know what …
The Empirical Development Of A Curriculum On Psalms Utilizing A Modified Form-Critical Approach, Ted Ewing
The Empirical Development Of A Curriculum On Psalms Utilizing A Modified Form-Critical Approach, Ted Ewing
Dissertations
Problem. The purpose of this study was to empirically develop a curriculum on the book of Psalms for readers of the English text that would bridge historical, theological, cultural, and linguistic distance, as well as overcome literary challenges associated with Hebrew poetry including figures of speech, parallelism, and psalm forms.
Method. The instructional product development methodology employed in this study was based on the work of Baker and Schutz (1971) and Naden (1993). The need for the product was established through a literature review, the specific learners were described, behavioral objectives were constructed, an identical pre-test and post-test were prepared, …
Preface: Double Jeopardy In Washington And Beyond, Justice Philip A. Talmadge
Preface: Double Jeopardy In Washington And Beyond, Justice Philip A. Talmadge
Seattle University Law Review
The prohibition against double jeopardy is of ancient lineage in western civilization. In a ringing and scholarly dissent that rewards reflection, Justice Hugo Black said:
Fear and abhorrence of governmental power to try people twice for the same conduct is one of the oldest ideas found in western civilization. Its roots run deep into Greek and Roman times. Even in the Dark Ages, when so many other principles of justice were lost, the idea that one trial and one punishment were enough remained alive through the canon law and the teachings of the early Christian writers. By the thirteenth century …

Why should hairdressers, of all unlikely candidates, have come to exemplify equality, to be a cultural obsession of sort? Suffice it to say that hairdressers happened to occupy a social position that made it possible to demonize them.

Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Programs: An Assessment Of Public Participation As A Means Of Fostering Environmental Stewardship, Christopher Damon
Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Programs: An Assessment Of Public Participation As A Means Of Fostering Environmental Stewardship, Christopher Damon
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Volunteer water quality monitoring organizations from across the country were surveyed (n=516) to determine the relationship between public involvement and the generation of stewardship within the community. Program coordinators were asked first to rate the level of stewardship values within the community, and then respond to questions covering four broad areas of public involvement: pre-existing conditions, public education, volunteer behavior, and communal involvement. For each question, organizations were aggregated by response, and a frequency analysis was performed to discover the most common responses in each of the four public involvement categories. the mean of perceived stewardship values was graphed as …
Religious Liberty And Democratic Politics, Kent Greenawalt
Religious Liberty And Democratic Politics, Kent Greenawalt

Some time ago, President Clinton talked to a gathering of religious journalists about abortion. He said that he did not believe that the biblical passages often cited by those who are "pro-life" indicate· clearly that abortion is wrong and should be prohibited. The reasons many people have for wanting abortion to be prohibited, or for allowing abortion, relate to their religious convictions. These people, for the most part, regard it as perfectly appropriate that religious perspectives help determine public policy on abortion in the United States. Others object. They say that the religious views of some people should not be …

One of the most pleasant tasks we have had as instructors in the Speaking Lab over the last two semesters was helping students with their first speech. For unlike other speeches, the objectives of the introductory speech seemed to be the clearest and the most uniform. In a department that houses more than one-hundred TAs, that welcomes diverse approaches to teaching public speaking, and that has no standardized syllabus, speaking assignments with uniform goals are obviously rare. We were pleasantly surprised, therefore, to learn from Rhetoric instructors and students who visited the Speaking Lab how closely related assignments for Speech …
Timing Of Metamorphosis In A Freshwater Crustacean: Comparison With Anuran Models, Saran Twombly
Timing Of Metamorphosis In A Freshwater Crustacean: Comparison With Anuran Models, Saran Twombly
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Many crustaceans have complex life cycles characterized by a metamorphosis, yet variation in metamorphic traits, and the causes and consequences of this variation, have rarely been examined. Food concentrations were changed during specific larval stages of the freshwater copepod Mesocyclops edax Forbes (Copepoda: Cyclopoida) to examine whether age and size at metamorphosis remain flexible or become fixed during the larval period. Results were compared to predictions of both flexible (the Wilbur—Collins model) and fixed (Leips—Travis model) rate models for the timing of amphibian metamorphosis. Age and size at metamorphosis were variable in all treatments, and age was always more variable …

Design And Evaluation Of An Environmental Science Curriculum For Secondary Students, Carolyn Knox Cooper
Design And Evaluation Of An Environmental Science Curriculum For Secondary Students, Carolyn Knox Cooper
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Environmental education is becoming an increasingly important component of secondary science education as our society attempts to minimize the exploitations and damaging actions of humankind on the earth. Environmental education has evolved primarily from environmental consciousness in the 1960s to an environmentally active focus in the 1990s. This project examined the effectiveness of an environmental education curriculum that focuses on improving environmental behaviors and attitudes as well as knowledge.
The review of the literature for this project indicates that responsible environmental behaviors are linked to four types of environmental education categories. These categories are hierarchical and include: 1) ecological concepts, …
Influence Of Physical Fitness On Susceptibility To Noise-Induced Temporary Threshold Shift In Females, Stacy Claire Bukatz
Influence Of Physical Fitness On Susceptibility To Noise-Induced Temporary Threshold Shift In Females, Stacy Claire Bukatz
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study investigated the influence of physical fitness on susceptibility to noise-induced temporary hearing loss in 33 females of various fitness levels, and the relationship between temporary threshold shift (TTS) and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) measurements. Behavioral audiometric thresholds and DPOAE measurements were obtained at 2000, 3000, 4000, and 6000 Hz prior to and immediately after 10 minutes of exposure to 108-dB SPL narrow-band noise centered at 2000 Hz. The greatest TTS and largest reduction in DPOAE amplitude occurred at·3000 Hz. However, no significant correlation was observed between TTS and DPOAE at any frequency or between any of the …
