Sanctuary, Redlight Districts, And Washington, D.C.: Some Observations On Neuman's Anomalous Zones (Symposium: Surveying Law And Borders), William I. Miller

The claim is often made that boundaries obviate disputes if they are clear. But boundaries are inseparable from disputes; they seem to invite them as much as obviate them. Note how natural the collocations "disputed boundary" and "boundary dispute" are. The conventional view that one hears a lot in law schools is that once a bright line is drawn then a boundary is "settled." But that supposes that a clear boundary need not be defended or continually justified or that internal changes in the entity it circumscribes and in some ways defines do not affect the integrity of the boundary. …

A Conversation Between Milner Ball And James Boyd White, Milner S. Ball, James Boyd White Jan 1996

A Conversation Between Milner Ball And James Boyd White, Milner S. Ball, James Boyd White

Other Publications

The editors of the Journal invited me to review James Boyd White's Acts of Hope. In response I proposed inviting Professor White to join me in a conversation about his work. First the editors and then he accepted the proposal. Professor White and I agreed that we might call a halt to this experiment at any time because we would not subvert our friendship in the attempt to enact an instance of it in print. The editors accepted the risk that we might at last have no pages for them. - MSB

Impacts Of Fire And Vertebrate Herbivores On Plant Community Characteristics And Soil Processes In A Coastal Marsh Of Eastern Louisiana, United States Of America., Mark Alan Ford Jan 1996

Impacts Of Fire And Vertebrate Herbivores On Plant Community Characteristics And Soil Processes In A Coastal Marsh Of Eastern Louisiana, United States Of America., Mark Alan Ford

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Both vertebrate herbivores and fire have long been known to have dramatic and important effects on wetlands. In the first part of this study, conducted in the Pearl River Basin coastal marshes of Louisiana, the interaction between the effects of mammalian herbivores, especially nutria and wild boar, and fire was examined in three marsh community types: those dominated by Sagittaria lancifolia, Panicum virgatum, or Spartina patens/Scirpus americanus. Overall, above-ground biomass was reduced by burning but increased by fencing. Richness only increased in plots that were both burned and fenced. In the three communities, only Scirpus americanus cover was enhanced by …

Relationships Between Brain Biogenic Amines And Reproductive And Defense Behavior In Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera L.)., Jeffrey Wayne Harris Jan 1996

Relationships Between Brain Biogenic Amines And Reproductive And Defense Behavior In Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera L.)., Jeffrey Wayne Harris

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation represents an attempt to relate behavioral states of worker honey bees to brain levels of biogenic amines. The first chapter describes the results of experiments which indicated that brain levels of octopamine, dopamine and serotonin were affected by factors including the degree of handling stress, worker age, season of sampling and the source colony from which the workers were sampled. These results helped shape the methods employed in the subsequent chapters. The second and third chapters relate changes in brain dopamine levels to worker honey bee ovarian development. In particular, chapter II showed that an increase in brain …

Conditioning The Auditory System With Continuous Versus Interrupted Noise Of Equal Acoustic Energy: Is Either Exposure More Protective?, Ruth Ann Skellett Jan 1996

Conditioning The Auditory System With Continuous Versus Interrupted Noise Of Equal Acoustic Energy: Is Either Exposure More Protective?, Ruth Ann Skellett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Prior exposure to moderate-level acoustic stimulation (conditioning) can reduce and/or prevent the deleterious effects of subsequent higher level exposures (Canlon et al., 1988; Campo et al., 1991). Both continuous and interrupted schedules of moderate-level noise have been used as conditioning exposures, and both schedules have been effective in providing protection against subsequent noise trauma. However, there is evidence to suggest that continuous noise exposures are more damaging to the cochlea than interrupted exposures of equal acoustic energy (Bohne et al., 1985, 1987), and moderate-level continuous and interrupted noise exposures differ in the pattern of auditory sensitivity change that they produce …

Postexercise Hypotension (Peh) In The Dog: Possible Role Of Immune System Cytokines., Gerald Dwayne Thompson Jan 1996

Postexercise Hypotension (Peh) In The Dog: Possible Role Of Immune System Cytokines., Gerald Dwayne Thompson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated postexercise hypotension (PEH) in five normotensive dogs testing these hypotheses: (1) PEH is present in the dog model; (2) high intensity exercise of 85% HR$\rm\sb{max}$ as compared to moderate intensity exercise of 60% HR$\rm\sb{max}$ induces a greater PEH; and (3) IL-1 and its activation of PGE$\sb2$ are associated with PEH. In experiment I, it was found that 85% HR$\rm\sb{max}$ exercise decreased systolic blood pressure (SBP) and mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) at 30 and 60 minutes postexercise (p $<$ 0.05). Both IL-1 and PGE$\sb2$ increased immediately following intense exercise, although temporal patterns were dissimilar. During non-exercise infusion of ibuprofen or dexamethasone (experiment II), blood pressure was not affected, but ibuprofen led to an overall inhibition of PGE$\sb2$. However, dexamethasone infusion led to a significant increase in PGE$\sb2$ at 180 and 210 minutes postinfusion. In experiment IIIA, after intense exercise following ibuprofen or saline infusion, PGE$\sb2$ increased at 120 to 180 minutes postexercise. Similar results were noted after exercise during dexamethasone treatment (experiment IIIB). In experiment IIIA & B, neither ibuprofen nor dexamethasone significantly affected PEH, although non-significant reductions in PEH was observed in dexamethasone treated animals. However, PGE$\sb2$ significantly increased after exercise at time points when PEH was not observed. These data indicate that (1) the intensity of exercise may have an effect on PEH, (2) there is partial support for the involvement of IL-1 and PGE$\sb2$ in PEH due to their immediate increase after exercise although a direct relationship was not observed, and (3) IL-1 still remains a possible mechanism responsible for PEH because of trends for attenuated PEH and PGE$\sb2$ responses following dexamethasone treatment.

Famine, Plague, And Greed: Socio-Historical Factors Affecting The Development Of The Middle English Dialect Of London., George Vincent Yonek Jan 1996

Famine, Plague, And Greed: Socio-Historical Factors Affecting The Development Of The Middle English Dialect Of London., George Vincent Yonek

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A significant factor in the rise of Standard English was the importance of London as a center of commerce and government, yet the foundation for Modern Standard English is not derived from the Southern dialects, which heavily influenced London in the late Old English and early Middle English period. The variety of English we speak and write today is derived mainly from the East Midland dialect and, to a lesser extent, the North in late Middle English. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the socio-historical causes behind this change in the distribution of features of the London dialect. …

Training Parents To Facilitate Language Through Storybook Reading., Linda K. Crowe Jan 1996

Training Parents To Facilitate Language Through Storybook Reading., Linda K. Crowe

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Six parent-child dyads participated in a single subject, multiple-baseline study evaluating the effectiveness of storybook reading as a context for parent training. Six children, ages 3;2 to 3;5 with specific language impairment, and their primary caregivers completed three-to-five baseline, eight-to-ten training, and two follow-up sessions. Parents were taught to use a complete reading cycle (CRC) based on a typical parent-child storybook reading format described by Ninio & Bruner (1978). The CRC consisted of four steps: (a) an attentional vocative to establish joint focus or topic for discussion, (b) a query to elicit a verbal response about the topic, (c) a …

Biochemical And Biophysical Studies Of Wild-Type And Active-Site Mutants Of Human Adenosine Deaminase., Qing Zeng Jan 1996

Biochemical And Biophysical Studies Of Wild-Type And Active-Site Mutants Of Human Adenosine Deaminase., Qing Zeng

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this work is structural and functional studies of wild-type and active-site mutants of human adenosine deaminase. Two active-site amino acids, Glu217 and His238, were previously substituted with alanine by site-directed mutagenesis. The Glu217Ala and His238Ala mutants showed little or no changes in Zn content and $\rm K\sb{m}$ value, yet dramatic loss of enzyme activity. Circular dichroism studies of the solution conformation of wild-type and mutant human adenosine deaminases indicate that 30 to 50% of $\alpha$-helical structure is lost in Glu217Ala and His238Ala, respectively, whereas $\beta$-sheet structure is fully retained. Inhibitor binding is measured by a fluorescent assay. …

Toxicity Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons To Benthic Invertebrates., Guilherme R. Lotufo Jan 1996

Toxicity Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons To Benthic Invertebrates., Guilherme R. Lotufo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous contaminants in aquatic environments. Because of their hydrophobicity, PAHs accumulate in bed sediments and pose a risk to the benthos. Information on the toxicity of sediment-associated PAHs is, however, limited and more information is needed to improve sediment quality-criteria and ecological-risk assessments. My research focused on improving our current knowledge of the acute and, especially, the sublethal effects of sediment-associated PAHs to aquatic invertebrates. Representatives of two phylogenetically distinct benthic invertebrate groups, freshwater tubificid oligochaetes and estuarine meiobenthic harpacticoid copepods, were used. Organisms were exposed to a range of concentrations of sediment-amended contaminants in …

Immunocytochemical Localization Of Gonadotropins, Growth Hormone, And Prolactin In Equine Pituitary., Mohammad Saeed Rahmanian Jan 1996

Immunocytochemical Localization Of Gonadotropins, Growth Hormone, And Prolactin In Equine Pituitary., Mohammad Saeed Rahmanian

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present research was performed to characterize immunoreactive (ir) pituitary cells in the equine species. Two experiments were performed to measure the prevalence of single- and double-hormone labeled gonadotropes, lactotropes, somatotropes, and mammosomatotropes. In Experiments 1 and 2, pituitaries from three intact pony mares were processed for ultrastructural evaluation of cells stained for luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin (PRL), and growth hormone (GH). Primary antibodies and gold-conjugated antibodies were used to double-stain ir-cells. The percentages of pituitary cells stained for each hormone in intact mares were: total gonadotropes, 15 to 32%; LH-only, 2 to 16%; FSH-only, 1 to …

Dairy Herd Improvement Records As Replacement Of Technician Breeding Receipt Database For Routine Estimates Of Non-Return Rates For Al Bulls In Technician-Devoid Areas., Rick A. Baron Jan 1996

Dairy Herd Improvement Records As Replacement Of Technician Breeding Receipt Database For Routine Estimates Of Non-Return Rates For Al Bulls In Technician-Devoid Areas., Rick A. Baron

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this study was to find whether DHI data could be used to estimate sire non-return rates to replace current technician data estimates. Bull weighted least squares means for non-return rates were calculated separately for five overlapping 60-90 day service periods from each data source. Models included stud, sire, service number, and linear and quadratic form of breeding month for both data sources, service unit for technician and lactation for DHI data. Sire and lactation were not significant $(P > .10).$ Technician differences $(P < .05)$ were in service unit, stud, service number, and linear and quadratic service month in all but one service period. DHI differed $(P < .05)$ for service number, month (linear and quadratic), and stud in two service periods. Technician R-square values were 0.23 to 0.28 versus 0.94 to 0.96 for DHI. Sire estimated non-return rates were weighted using the inverted estimator standard error squared and compared. Sire, stud, data source, service period, and appropriate interactions were modeled. Weighted bull non-returns differed $(P < .01)$ in magnitude across data sources. Stud, data source by stud, and sire within stud by data source were significant $(P .10).$ Four fertility categories based on mean and standard deviation of the weighted estimates were formed within the data sources across service periods. These categories were correlated (0.5 $>$ r $>$ 0.9) and 52.9 to 87.4% congruent within data source for adjacent …

Use Of Geographic Information System Technology To Assess Vulnerability To Shallow Groundwater Contamination., Brenda G. Bruner Jan 1996

Use Of Geographic Information System Technology To Assess Vulnerability To Shallow Groundwater Contamination., Brenda G. Bruner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Geographic Information System (GIS) technology was used to develop a local scale screening procedure for assessing shallow ground water's vulnerability to nitrate contamination. The procedure was based on the spatial distribution of ten key physical and chemical properties of soils. Both flow characteristics and attenuation capabilities of soils were incorporated into the assessment. Land surface areas were classified by the GIS to show the level of vulnerability present at a site as a result of existing natural conditions. The procedure produced a Vulnerability Index (VI), and resulted in VI ranging from 4.98 to 6.72 for the study area (with ten …

Immunodiagnosis Of Fasciolosis By Detection Of Coproantigen., Salma Mohamed Abdel-Rahman Jan 1996

Immunodiagnosis Of Fasciolosis By Detection Of Coproantigen., Salma Mohamed Abdel-Rahman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A monoclonal antibody (MAb)-based western blot analysis (WB) was developed for detection of a 26-28 kD coproantigen in Fasciola hepatica infected cattle. Using WB the coproantigen was detected in feces from experimentally infected calves with 22 flukes or more. Using the biotin-streptavidin modification of WB, antigen was detected in the feces from experimentally-infected calves with 10 flukes or more as early as 6 weeks post-infection. The MAbs did not react with the ES of Paramphistomum sp. or Moniezia sp, but showed slight cross-reactivity with ES from F. gigantica, and there was moderate cross-reactivity with Fascioloides magna ES. Differential staining of …

Poverty And Social Control In Early Modern England: Exeter, 1558-1625., Connie S. Evans Jan 1996

Poverty And Social Control In Early Modern England: Exeter, 1558-1625., Connie S. Evans

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Poverty has always been, and continues to be, one of the most pressing social problems, and one to which a number of solutions have been proposed through the ages. The present work is an examination of the problem and the responses to it in early modern England, and is set in the local context of the city of Exeter. Prior to the reign of Elizabeth I, the majority of poor law legislation was punitive in nature. rather than rehabilitative. That the nature of poor law legislation changed under Elizabeth was due to a number of factors, not least of which …

Geographic Information Systems For Schistosomiasis In Brazil., Maria Emilia Bavia Jan 1996

Geographic Information Systems For Schistosomiasis In Brazil., Maria Emilia Bavia

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study has identified environmental factors influencing the distribution of schistosomiasis and the prevalence of the disease in the population in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The Intergraph Modular Environmental Systems nucleus (MGE), a geographic information system (GIS), was applied to 30 municipalities in Bahia to establish a descriptive and quantitative study of the spatial and temporal dynamics of infection. The GIS was constructed by digitizing maps of soil type, vegetation, topology, and hydrologic features including temperature, rainfall, and seasonal pattern of precipitation, prevalence of schistosomiasis, and the distribution of snails, which are the intermediate hosts of the disease. The …

The Relationship Of Hemolymph Sugar, Juvenile Hormone And Biogenic Amines To The Three Behavioral States Of Mature Honey Bees., Janko Bozic Jan 1996

The Relationship Of Hemolymph Sugar, Juvenile Hormone And Biogenic Amines To The Three Behavioral States Of Mature Honey Bees., Janko Bozic

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Differences in sugar titers, JH synthesis rate and biogenic amine metabolism correlated with three distinct activity groups or mature bees: resting bees, followers and dancers. Dancers had lower trehalose titers than followers or resting bees. In absconding bees trehalose titers were even lower, due to greatly elevated locomotor activity. The collecting and transferring of food by dancers and followers resulted in a higher glucose titer than in resting bees. Followers had a higher-JH synthesis rate than dancers, suggesting that JH could be an internal motivational stimulus to recruit followers to forage. Dancers and followers collect and transfer food and therefore …

The Sense Of Justice And The Justice Of Sense: Native Hawaiian Sovereignty And The Second "Trial Of The Century", William H. Rodgers, Jr. Jan 1996

The Sense Of Justice And The Justice Of Sense: Native Hawaiian Sovereignty And The Second "Trial Of The Century", William H. Rodgers, Jr.

Articles

My approach in this Essay is to look at the Native Hawaiian Sovereignty conflict through a lens suggested by evolutionary theory, sometimes described in the law schools as "Law and Biology." In this world, the sense of justice is a set of expectations about how others should behave, backed by a proclivity towards moralistic aggression against deviators.

The sense of justice entails both cognition and emotion, with a match of expectations and then the fit that follows if there is no fit.

Compare and despair is the name of the game. Explored in detail are the actions of Dennis "Bumpy" …
