A Literature-Based Thematic Unit For A Multi-Age Classroom, Diane C. Beard Jan 1996

A Literature-Based Thematic Unit For A Multi-Age Classroom, Diane C. Beard

Graduate Research Papers

The development of a literature-based integrated science unit for a multi-age classroom of 6- to 8-year-olds is based on a review of professional literature and a search of library materials for children. The integrated science unit on Iowa Owls and Bats allows children the opportunity to study animal life in their neighborhood, thus developing a better understanding of the real world around them. The print rich environment with a whole array of literature genres and developmentally appropriate expressive activities gives the children a secure and predictable environment in which to learn and grow socially, mentally, emotionally and physically. This integrated …

Multimedia In Education, Shouh-Chang Chen Jan 1996

Multimedia In Education, Shouh-Chang Chen

Graduate Research Papers

Multimedia has a role in education, because of its ability to present information in a format that interests the users. It can serve to complement traditional instruction. According to Luehrmann (1994), multimedia instructional software cannot totally replace the human teacher, because the purpose of education is not entirely academic. He further pointed out that schools not only provide the environment for learning, it also lets pupils interact and communicate with adults and peers. Multimedia can potentially offer learners the ability to access information in a appealing format without the direct presence of an instructor. This could reduce the cost of …

Daubert And The Quest For Value-Free "Scientific Knowledge" In The Courtroom, Alexander Morgan Capron Jan 1996

Daubert And The Quest For Value-Free "Scientific Knowledge" In The Courtroom, Alexander Morgan Capron

University of Richmond Law Review

In a world that grows more technologically complex every day and in which scientific research continually expands both our understanding of, and our questions about, the operation of the natural and man-made world, it is hardly surprising that science should show up with increasing frequency in our court-rooms. Science itself is sometimes at issue, for example, in proceedings on allegations of scientific misconduct or in disputes over the ownership or patentability of technologies. But more frequently, science enters in aid of resolving a case in which a complex question of causation is at issue. To establish or rebut causation, each …

Social And Economic Opportunity In Seventeenth-Century Charles County, Maryland, Garett William Hughes Jan 1996

Social And Economic Opportunity In Seventeenth-Century Charles County, Maryland, Garett William Hughes

History Theses & Dissertations

This study explores social and economic opportunity within Charles County in the context of the seventeenth-century and the founding of the Maryland colony. By illustrating the strong cross-Atlantic ties between England and the Chesapeake region, as well as the impact that a high population turnover rate and unsteady tobacco economy had upon the Maryland colony, this study first establishes the environment that those settlers who chose to immigrate to the Chesapeake inhabited. Further, by utilizing community connections, personal relations, and the legal system, the men and women of Charles County developed new methods in which to access opportunity. The source …

Genetic Variability And Gene Flow In Metepeira Ventura (Araneae, Araneidae), Martina G. Ramirez Jan 1996

Genetic Variability And Gene Flow In Metepeira Ventura (Araneae, Araneidae), Martina G. Ramirez

Biology Faculty Works

Levels of genetic variability and gene flow among three populations of Metepeira ventura o n Santa Catalina Island, California, were evaluated based on variation at 10 gene loci . Mean heterozygosity (observed) per population was 10 .4% and mean polymorphism was 36 .7%, consistent with levels of variabilit y in other arthropods. Values of FST for the five polymorphic loci (mean FST = 0 .009) suggest that gene flow prevents the genetic differentiation of these populations . The average number of migrants per generation (Nm) among these populations is estimated to be 28 .6 . The lack of inter-population genetic …

Energy Production From Forages (Or American Agriculture-Back To The Future), Kenneth P. Vogel Jan 1996

Energy Production From Forages (Or American Agriculture-Back To The Future), Kenneth P. Vogel

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

At the turn of the century, with the exception of trains and water transportation, the transportation and agriculture industries of the U.S. were powered largely by herbaceous biomass. The herbaceous biomass was converted to usable energy by draft animals, primarily horses and mules. After 1900, automobiles, trucks, and tractors began to be used in transportation and agriculture. However, in 1920 there were still 25 million horses and mules on farms and ranches and 2 million draft animals in the cities of the United States (Ensminger 1955; (census of Agriculture 1920). The energy requirements of these animals were considerable. In the …

Bromegrasses, Kenneth P. Vogel, K. J. Moore, Lowell E. Moser Jan 1996

Bromegrasses, Kenneth P. Vogel, K. J. Moore, Lowell E. Moser

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The bromegrasses belong to the genus Bromus of which there are some 100 species (Gould & Shaw, 1983). The genus includes both annual and perennial cool season species adapted to temperate climates. Hitchcock (1971) described 42 bromegrass species found in the USA and Canada of which 22 were native (Gould & Shaw, 1983). Bromus is the Greek word for oat and refers to the panicle inflorescence characteristic of the genus. The bromegrasses are C3 species (Krenzer et aI., 1975; Waller & Lewis, 1979).
