Characterization Of Variant Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Long Terminal Repeat Sequences., Charles Richard Madden Jan 1996

Characterization Of Variant Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Long Terminal Repeat Sequences., Charles Richard Madden

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) is the causative agent of a persistent disease in horses. The long terminal repeat (LTR) region of EIAV contains the enhancer and promoter elements necessary for transcription of the proviral genome. The LTR is also prone to a high degree of sequence variability between different virus isolates. Sequence alignments of LTR variants from both tissue culture-adapted strains of the virus as well as sequential horse isolates showed a high degree of sequence variability between variants. Sequence variability was further localized to a hypervariable region approximately 60 bp upstream of the TATA box. This region contained …

The Effects Of Timber Management Activities On Understory Plant Succession In Young Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Plantations., Donald Paul Reed Jan 1996

The Effects Of Timber Management Activities On Understory Plant Succession In Young Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Plantations., Donald Paul Reed

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An understory vegetative succession study was conducted on the LSU Lee Memorial Forest near Bogalusa, Louisiana. Research blocks were established within fifteen-year-old overstocked loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) stands, in specific areas classified as with or without a history of prescribed burning for the current timber rotation. Silvicultural treatments involved precommercially thinning randomly selected blocks to various stand densities, along with the establishment of unthinned control areas. Growth rates of residual trees were determined from tree diameter measurements, on all timbered plots. Burn-history areas received a further treatment, involving the mechanical destruction of all timber on specified areas, followed by site-preparation …

Dinitropyrenes: Nitroreduction Processes And Evaluation Of Indices Of Exposure., Matthew Jerome Krautmann Jan 1996

Dinitropyrenes: Nitroreduction Processes And Evaluation Of Indices Of Exposure., Matthew Jerome Krautmann

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Investigations were conducted to identify biomarkers of exposure to dinitropyrenes (DNPs), which are mutagenic and carcinogenic residues of incomplete combustion. One possible biomarker, a DNP-protoporphyrin IX adduct, was not found in analytically useful quantities in liver tissue or in bile. Clastogenicity, a biomarker of effect, also was found to be absent in marrow cells following subchronic exposure of rats to DNPs by gavage. Solubility studies, used as a basis for dosing guidelines, revealed that DNPs are relatively insoluble in both aqueous and lipid tissue compartments. Calculated log P values indicated that the reduced metabolites of DNPs probably are more soluble …

Paleoindicators Of Changing Water Conditions In Louisiana Estuaries., Michael Lewis Parsons Jan 1996

Paleoindicators Of Changing Water Conditions In Louisiana Estuaries., Michael Lewis Parsons

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Sediment cores were collected to study the development of eutrophication and hydrological changes in coastal Louisiana. The cores were taken at marsh sites hypothesized to be influenced primarily by riverine inputs (Fourleague Bay-FLB), localized activities (Terrebonne Bay-TSMP), and both riverine and localized processes (Airplane Lake-APL). The sediment cores represented time frames ranging from 330 years (APL) to 70 years (TSMP) BP according to core dating results. Sediment core samples were analyzed for diatoms, other microfossils, pigments, biogenic silica, and sediment characteristics. Additionally, land use records were utilized as a proxy of anthropogenic activities, and to aid in the interpretation of …

Modulation Of Queuine Uptake And Incorporation Into Trna By Protein Kinase C And Protein Phosphatase, Rana C. Morris, Bonnie J. Brooks, K. Lenore Hart, Mark S. Elliot

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

It has been suggested that the rate of queuine uptake into cultured human fibroblasts is controlled by phosphorylation levels within the cell. We show that the uptake of queuine is stimulated by activators of protein kinase C (PKC) and inhibitors of protein phosphatase; while inhibitors of PKC, and down-regulation of PKC by chronic exposure to phorbol esters inhibit the uptake of queuine into cultured human fibroblasts. Activators of cAMP- and cGMP-dependent kinases exert no effect on the uptake of queuine into fibroblast cell cultures. These studies suggest that PKC directly supports the activity of the queuine uptake mechanism, and that …

Hydrologic Factors Affecting The Discharge Of Ground Water In The Red River Of The North Basin, Northeastern North Dakota, Michael Lee Strobel Jan 1996

Hydrologic Factors Affecting The Discharge Of Ground Water In The Red River Of The North Basin, Northeastern North Dakota, Michael Lee Strobel

Theses and Dissertations

Ground-water discharge from bedrock aquifers contributes significant amounts of salinity to the Red River of the North. The area of major discharge is represented on the land surface by saline soils, wetlands, and flowing wells. As tributaries flow through these areas, the dissolved-solids concentrations in the streams increase. This salinity is then transported to the Red River of the North and northward to Canada. The bedrock units that supply the saline water are mainly the Dakota Group. Overlying the bedrock are sediments from numerous glacial advances and lacustrine sediments from glacial Lake Agassiz. These units form confining layers over the …

Honouring Young Children: Research, Curriculum And Practice In Early Childhood Education, Loraine Corrie (Ed.) Jan 1996

Honouring Young Children: Research, Curriculum And Practice In Early Childhood Education, Loraine Corrie (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

Early childhood educators tend to be people who like to agree with their colleagues. Often we avoid conflict situations and keep the peace by being silent, rather than raising our voices in dissent. But rapid changes to the field, coupled with the explosion of knowledge in the 90s, have opened up new dilemmas and new challenges for teachers. If we are to meet these challenges in a way that honours young children, then we need to talk about our differences and diverse views in a spirit of trust and professional collegiality.

The Second Edith Cowan Memorial Conference on Early Childhood …

Research outputs pre 2011

This Unit Two focuses on the development of search strategies in using CD-ROM encyclopedias. A thorough introduction to the basics of searching with Boolean logical operators is provided in Unit One. CD-ROM encyclopedia publishers not only update their products annually but some now provide monthly online updating facilities from the Internet. In this very dynamic environment it is rather difficult to evaluate their search facilities as improvements take place constantly.

The Unit develops strategies to take full advantage of the text and multimedia materials stored in the various indexes of an electronic encyclopedia, as well as methods for evaluating the …

The Relationship Of Ethnic Identity Development To Cognitive Development In Preschool Children, Teresa L. Henegar Jan 1996

The Relationship Of Ethnic Identity Development To Cognitive Development In Preschool Children, Teresa L. Henegar

Honors Capstones

With increasing racial tensions, visible in the Rodney King incident and the L.A. Riots, and with an increasing demand for cultural sensitivity and cultural diversity, the need for research on ethnic identity development is greater than ever before. Until recent years, these efforts were focused upon school-aged children, but recent research suggests that children have a greater sense of their ethnic identity than previously thought (Phinney, 1987, p. 265). Many researchers have found that racial attitudes are acquired at a much earlier age, and, once formed, these attitudes may form a strong intractable foundation for racism (Phinney and Rotheram, 1987,20; …

Women's Perceptions Of Sexuality In Rural Giza, Hind Khattab Jan 1996

Women's Perceptions Of Sexuality In Rural Giza, Hind Khattab

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This study on sexuality among women in rural Giza, Egypt, is part of a broader project on women's health and reproductive morbidity conducted by the Population Council’s Reproductive Health Working Group. Reproductive tract infections (RTIs) and other ailments associated with reproduction among women in the rural community surveyed suggest that a heavy burden of disease is being borne by women living in underprivileged areas in this region. This research on sexuality has been conducted within a conceptual framework that uses a socio-cultural approach to health and illness. The investigation is an assessment of women's perception of and knowledge about sexuality …

Facets Of Job Satisfaction Among Social Service Workers, Mary Ann Meegan Jan 1996

Facets Of Job Satisfaction Among Social Service Workers, Mary Ann Meegan

Theses

Workers in the field of social services report being overworked and underpaid. Studies have shown evidence that this is an accurate perception. Yet those same studies, as well as others, indicate that social service workers are generally satisfied with their jobs. This presents a question as to what the source or sources of this satisfaction are. An instrument designed to explore facets of job satisfaction specifically in the social services professions was administered to 40 Children's Services Workers of the Division of Family Services in St. Charles Co., Mo. The results indicate that, while less than satisfied with salary, promotional …

Nursing Home Management Of The Certified Nurse's Aide: Voluntary Job Turnover, Job Satisfaction, And An Overview Of Industry Challenges With Proven Solutions, Kevin G. Sullivan Jan 1996

Nursing Home Management Of The Certified Nurse's Aide: Voluntary Job Turnover, Job Satisfaction, And An Overview Of Industry Challenges With Proven Solutions, Kevin G. Sullivan

Theses

This thesis will focus on the issues surrounding the voluntary turnover rate of the certified nurse's aide population. Research has attributed the high turnover rate to numerous factors such as inadequate monetary compensation, lack of job satisfaction, difficulty in being promoted, inattention of management to the relevant issues, and the failure of management to use proven solutions utilized by other non- health care businesses in attracting and retaining qualified and desirable employees.

With annual turnover rates of the certified nurse's aide population estimated in the 100% to 300% range, the magnitude of the problem cannot be disputed. However, with the …

The Role Of Non-Verbal Communication In The Maintenance Of Stratification By Gender And Race In America, Barbara Ann Dulaney Jan 1996

The Role Of Non-Verbal Communication In The Maintenance Of Stratification By Gender And Race In America, Barbara Ann Dulaney

Theses

The research goal of the following culminating project is to identify the role of non-verbal communication in the maintenance of social stratification based on gender and race in America.

The first chapter seeks to clarify the two main components: social stratification and non-verbal communication. Social stratification is defined and a summary is given of several theories regarding stratification and of how, in various religious, political and social movements, it is a significant factor. The constituents of non-verbal communication are identified.

The second chapter reviews literature on the subject of general social stratification. In order to present a concise look at …
