Simulation Of Runoff Transport Of Animal Manure Constituents, Yang Wang, Dwayne R. Edwards, Tommy C. Daniel, H. Don Scott
Simulation Of Runoff Transport Of Animal Manure Constituents, Yang Wang, Dwayne R. Edwards, Tommy C. Daniel, H. Don Scott
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Runoff losses of land-applied animal manure constituents can adversely affect the quality of downstream waters. Reliable mathematical simulation models can help estimate runoff losses of animal manure constituents and identify management measures to reduce these losses. The objective of this study was to develop and calibrate an event-based simulation model to describe the runoff transport of solids (soil and manure particles) and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) from areas treated with animal manure. The resulting model, consisting of linked hydrology, soil/manure transport, and nutrient transport components, is process-oriented and uses measurable parameters to the greatest degree possible. The three components of …

Long-term land application of animal manures, even at agronomic rates, can promote accumulation of soil phosphorus (P) which can, in turn, contribute to increased P loadings to downstream waters. The objective of this study was to assess the soil and runoff effects of replacing animal manure as a soil amendment with inorganic fertilizer (ammonium nitrate, NH4NO3) on fields that had been treated previously with animal manures. Runoff from two pairs of small fields (0.57 to 1.46 ha) was sampled from September 1991 to April 1994. All fields had been treated previously with animal manures; after runoff …

Poultry Litter-Treated Length Effects On Quality Of Runoff From Fescue Plots, Dwayne R. Edwards, Philip A. Moore Jr., Tommy C. Daniel, Puneet Srivastava
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Using experimental data and/or mathematical simulation models to identify practices that reduce pollution from manure-treated areas is sometimes perceived as limited by the unknown validity of extrapolating plot-scale data to larger areas and by uncertainties in modeling transport of various pollutants. The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of length of manure treatment on runoff concentrations of poultry litter constituents and to define the modes of transport (particulate versus soluble) for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), carbon (C), and solids. Poultry litter was applied to three 1.5- x 18.3-m fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) plots with runoff collection …

Application Of Simplified Phosphorus Transport Models To Pasture Fields In Northwest Arkansas, Dwayne R. Edwards, C. T. Haan, Andrew N. Sharpley, John F. Murdoch, Tommy C. Daniel, Philip A. Moore Jr.
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Runoff transport of phosphorus (P) is often predicted from simple equations with parameters determined from data applicable primarily to row-cropped and fallow cover conditions. The applicability, accuracy, and precision of such P transport prediction equations under pasture situations are less well defined. The objectives of this study were to determine parameters of simplified runoff P transport equations for pasture fields and to assess the accuracy and precision of the equations. Runoff, sediment yield, soluble P transport, and particulate P transport data were collected from four pasture fields in northwestern Arkansas. Runoff event enrichment ratios and extraction coefficients were computed, and …

Spatial Distribution And Sequential Sampling Of The Rice Water Weevil, Lissorhoptrus Oryzophilus Kuschel, In Louisiana., Mark Alan Muegge
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Studies were conducted in Louisiana to determine the spatial and temporal distribution of rice water weevil (RWW), Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, adults, eggs, larvae and pupae in drill-seeded rice. In addition, three sequential sampling plans, Kuno's fixed precision sequential sampling plan, the sequential probability ratio test (SPRT), and 2-SPRT, were developed and evaluated to establish an accurate and economically efficient sampling plan for RWW larvae in drill-seeded rice in Louisiana. Values obtained for the aggregation indices, b, from Taylor's power law, $\beta$, from Iwao's patchiness regression and, k, from the negative binomial distribution indicated that RWW larvae were nearly randomly distributed …
Composted Municipal Waste And Fertilizer Effects On Soils And Sugarcane., Xianliang Wan
Composted Municipal Waste And Fertilizer Effects On Soils And Sugarcane., Xianliang Wan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Application of composted municipal waste to agricultural lands has potential benefits to improve soil fertility and crop yield. It may lead to accumulation of heavy metals within soils and leaching of nutrients and heavy metals into the ground water. The objectives of this study were to investigate: (1) the effects of composted municipal waste and fertilizer on soil chemical properties and sugarcane elemental uptake and yield; and (2) the leachability of elements in compost amended soils. Results of three field experiments from a Baldwin silty clay loam and a Memphis silt loam showed that compost application at $\ge$33.6 Mg/ha increased …
Interaction Between Ap-1 Proteins And Glucocorticoid Receptors In Regulation Of Lymphokine Activated Killer (Lak) Cell Activity In The Equine Species., Jing Bu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This project was performed in order to determine whether exercise-induced increases in plasma cortisol concentrations may be responsible for enhanced lymphokine activated killer (LAK) cell activity. Secondly, this project included preliminary experments which were designed to test the hypothesis that stimulatory effects of cortisol on LAK cell activity may be due to cross-talk between signalling systems important to glucocorticoid effects and stimuli which act through nuclear activator protein-1 (AP-1). Blood samples were collected from resting horses in order to determine whether the animals had normal plasma glucocorticoid concentrations. All horses included in these experiments had $10\sp{-7}$ to $10\sp{-8}$M cortisol concentrations …
The Effects Of Social Constraints On Peer Evaluation., Charlotte Mcinnis Curtis
The Effects Of Social Constraints On Peer Evaluation., Charlotte Mcinnis Curtis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Writers unable to improve their own work benefit when an outside reader suggests revision strategies, but what constraints shape the advice students give? This research presents a descriptive/naturalistic study of how students in one composition class viewed peer evaluation. The research explores how students' expectations of the procedure shape their comments and presents a system to code comments for revision/praise content. It considers nine editors' responses to the same essays. The Flower et al. three-part self-revision categories were modified and expanded to code editors' comments: those that referenced an essay's basic features ("thesis") were coded revision level (RL) 1; comments …
"It Is Leviathan": Family, Feminism, And American Drama., Janet Vanderpool Haedicke
"It Is Leviathan": Family, Feminism, And American Drama., Janet Vanderpool Haedicke
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
American drama has ever occupied a stepchild position in scholarship, its denigration rooted in the lure of domestic realism for even the most resistant of our playwrights. Maligned as solipsistic and regressive, this "leviathan" of mainstream American theatre putatively upholds through its content the unity of the mythologized family and through its form the closure of classical realism. Yet the legacy of this leviathan is an epistemological subversion and a transformative impulse. Those very plays which apotheosize American domestic realism ironically undermine its foundation in psychological causality, narrative linearity, transparent language, unmediated consciousness, and unified meaning. Destabilizing that objective reality …
The Impact Of Total Sleep Deprivation On Neuropsychological Functioning., Paul Gale Binks
The Impact Of Total Sleep Deprivation On Neuropsychological Functioning., Paul Gale Binks
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Extended sleep deprivation has been shown to produce impairments in sustained attention and vigilance, especially if the deprivation period is greater than 48 hours. However little is known about the effects of sleep deprivation on performance of cognitive tasks considered to be measures of higher cortical functioning such as cognitive flexibility and the capacity to shift response set. These two activities are associated with intact functioning of the frontal lobes of the cerebral cortex while attention and vigilance tasks are not considered to be part of this type of cognitive activity and are not associated with frontal lobe function. One …

Micellar Electrokinetic Remediation Of Tnt From Soil., Mohd Raihan Taha
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An assessment of the feasibility of micellar electrokinetic (EK) remediation of TNT from soils is presented. Batch solubilization tests and bench scale EK tests were conducted to select the best candidate surfactant and to evaluate the efficiency of removal of TNT from a real world soil. From batch tests, it was found that SDS gave the best desorption results among a group of candidate surfactants, which includes DOWFAX 8390 (anionic), Tween 80 and Brij 35 (nonionic) and CTAB and CTAC (cationic). Unenhanced and surfactant enhanced EK tests was unable to move substantial amounts of TNT across the specimen to the …
Walker Percy's Return To The Feminine., John Patrick Zmirak Jr
Walker Percy's Return To The Feminine., John Patrick Zmirak Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
What has been lacking in the corpus of interpretation of Walker Percy's work is a synthesis of approaches, a reading of the novels that unites the philosophical, psychological, theological, and linguistic insights that have accrued over three decades of criticism, and applies them to the vexing question of sexuality within his novels. In the present work, Percy's four central, non-satiric novels, The Moviegoer, The Last Gentleman, Lancelot and The Second Coming, are analyzed in the light of the Christian allegorical tradition, which employs sexual categories to explicate the meta-physical order, and to inform sexuality with meaning. In each of Percy's …
An Attempt To Classify The Production And Regulation Of Cyclooxygenase-2 During Ovulation And Luteolysis., James Robert Broussard
An Attempt To Classify The Production And Regulation Of Cyclooxygenase-2 During Ovulation And Luteolysis., James Robert Broussard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A series of experiments were designed to determine the cyclooxygenase (COX) isoform responsible for prostaglandin release during ovulation and luteolysis. Initially, a reliable, serum-free culture system was developed to produce large numbers of bovine granulosa cells originally harvested from the small antral follicles of abattoir ovaries. This method allowed adequate numbers of cells to be obtained for the subsequent study involving cyclooxygenase regulation. In a second experiment, bovine granulosa cells from small antral follicles were isolated and cultured as in the first experiment for 6 days. Granulosa cells were then exposed to medium alone or medium containing arachidonic acid (10 …
Relationship Of Catecholamines And Glucocorticoids To Lymphoproliferation Of Equine Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells., Lavanya Potla
Relationship Of Catecholamines And Glucocorticoids To Lymphoproliferation Of Equine Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells., Lavanya Potla
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Stress has been related to increased plasma epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE), and glucocorticoids. These compounds produce immunomodulatory effects by interacting with hormone receptors on or in various immune cells. This project assessed the effects of stress on equine influenza virus (EIV)-specific and mitogen-induced lymphoproliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in relation to stress-induced changes in E, NE, and cortisol. In vitro effects of amines on proliferative responses and glucocorticoid receptor (GR) assays were done as a secondary measure of hormone and neurotransmitter interactions with the immune system. Time-dependent, saturable-specific hormone binding to GRs was abolished by heat treatment and …
Regulation Of Interrenal Steroidogenesis In Elasmobranchs., Brian Scott Nunez
Regulation Of Interrenal Steroidogenesis In Elasmobranchs., Brian Scott Nunez
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the steroidogenic enzymes of the elasmobranch interrenal. First, biochemical characteristics of cytochrome P450c21 hydroxylase (P450c21) and 3$\beta$-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3$\beta$-HSD) were determined with incubations of the microsomal fraction of Carcharhinus limbatus (blacktip shark) interrenal tissue. Second, molecular reagents were obtained by isolating and sequencing partial cDNA clones encoding the elasmobranch steroidogenic enzymes cytochrome P450 side chain cleavage (P450scc) and 3$\beta$-HSD from blacktip shark and Daysatis americana (southern stingray) interrenal. Finally, the regulation of Daysatis sabina (Atlantic stingray) interrenal steroidogenesis by peptide hormones such as corticotropin (ACTH) and angiotensin II was investigated by in vitro incubations of interrenal tissue. …
"Engineered Enjoyment": Technology, Capitalism, And The Female Body In Film., Catherine Williamson
"Engineered Enjoyment": Technology, Capitalism, And The Female Body In Film., Catherine Williamson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation explores the link between technology, capitalism, and the female body in 20th century cinema. It argues that commodified pleasure, or "engineered enjoyment," is always produced by establishing technological control over the female body. The scope of this dissertation is limited to films produced during the post-World War II era. In Chapter One I define "engineered enjoyment" and show how film is the prototypical example of such. In Chapter Two I examine how the cinematic apparatus works as a pleasure-producing system and explore what happens when that system breaks down, as in the 1947 film Lady in the Lake. …
Artificial Grammar Learning In A Dual Task Paradigm., Barbara Cochran
Artificial Grammar Learning In A Dual Task Paradigm., Barbara Cochran
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A series of experiments explored the effects of performing concurrent secondary tasks on learning letter strings created with a finite state artificial grammar. Experiments 1-2 compared a task which disrupted organized encoding to a task which simply required holding information in memory while encoding strings, as well as to two control tasks. Participants performing the disruptive task were worse at judging the grammaticality of test strings than were participants in the two single task control groups. Performance of the memory load group fell between the disruptive task group and the control groups, but was not significantly different from either. Experiments …
Ion Transport In The Freshwater Bivalve, Corbicula Fluminea (Muller)., Huiyuan Zheng
Ion Transport In The Freshwater Bivalve, Corbicula Fluminea (Muller)., Huiyuan Zheng
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Corbicula fluminea (Muller) maintains hydromineral balance in dilute media by active transepithelial transport of Na and Cl. Cl uptake depended on external (Cl) and displayed saturable kinetics. The transport capacity in pondwater(PW)-acclimated animals was 7.00 $\pm$ 0.51 $\mu$eq(g dry tissue $\cdot$ h)$\sp{-1}$ and the transport affinity 0.21 $\pm$ 0.08 mM. Prolonged salt depletion increased Cl transport capacity without changing the affinity. In PW-acclimated C. fluminea, Na and Cl transport were independent, and were stimulated by serotonin. In salt depleted (SD)animals, Na transport was partially Cl-dependent but Cl transport was Na-independent. Acetazolamide increased Na and Cl efflux. Both serotonin and acetazolamide …
James Joyce's "Ulysses" And World War I., Ann Hingle Martin
James Joyce's "Ulysses" And World War I., Ann Hingle Martin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The final words of Ulysses underline the text's position on the cusp of the pre- and postwar eras. Joyce was emphatic that Molly's "Yes" be immediately followed by those crucial coordinates: centerlineTrieste--Zurich--Paris. centerline 1914-1921. Where does this unsettling epitaph point us? In the direction of history, clearly; we are nudged toward the text's and its nail-paring creator's autobiography. Even the shallowest knowledge of recent history will indicate the centrality of those towns, during those years, to "all those wretched quarrels ... erroneouslv supposed to be about a punctilio of honour and a flag" (526). Even the shallowest knowledge of recent …
Expression Of A Designed Cecropin Analog Gene Using A Baculovirus Vector., Kyusam Choi
Expression Of A Designed Cecropin Analog Gene Using A Baculovirus Vector., Kyusam Choi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Cecropins are basic, amphipathic peptides with antibacterial activity against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. By retaining the positively charged, amphipathic characteristic of cecropin B, a cecropin analog S1, in which 54% of amino acid residues were substituted, was synthesized and shown to possess a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. To determine expression of the cecropin analog S1 in Sf9 cells, two gene constructs were designed, and inserted into Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus under the control of the polyhedrin promoter. One construct, pBS1, consisted of a gene encoding the analog peptide, so that the gene was intended for expression in …
Thiamine, Riboflavin, And Sensory Stability Of Irradiated Brown Rice., Linda Chamberlain Douglas
Thiamine, Riboflavin, And Sensory Stability Of Irradiated Brown Rice., Linda Chamberlain Douglas
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
While brown rice is nutritionally superior to white rice, it is not shelf stable, becoming rancid in a matter of weeks. Preservation by refrigeration or freezing is expensive and not universally available. Therefore, other preservation methods, such as aqueous ethanol extraction of lipids, have been studied to overcome this problem, but these methods also have limitations. The effects of gamma-irradiation on the physicochemical properties and lipase activity in brown rice has been well documented. Gamma-irradiation has been shown to reduce lipase activity, presumably preserving sensory quality. A sensory study of 2 Louisiana grown varieties (Mars and Lemont) of irradiated brown …
An Examination Of The Effects Of Increased Response Requirement And Delay On Reinforcer Selection., Teresa Lynne George
An Examination Of The Effects Of Increased Response Requirement And Delay On Reinforcer Selection., Teresa Lynne George
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examined the effect that increased response requirement, or effort, (Study 1) and delay to reinforcement (Study 2) have on reinforcer selection and response allocation. A reinforcer assessment using a token system was conducted within the classroom setting to determine high and low preference stimuli. The independent variable (effort or delay) was systematically manipulated for high preference stimuli. The results for eight participants indicated that increased levels of effort and delay independently influenced reinforcer preference and response allocation. The results revealed highly idiosyncratic responding to the different levels of the independent variables. The findings for increased response requirement are …
Delights Of The Night And Pleasures Of The Void: Vampirism And Entropy In Nineteenth-Century Literature., Michael James Dennison
Delights Of The Night And Pleasures Of The Void: Vampirism And Entropy In Nineteenth-Century Literature., Michael James Dennison
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation explores the figure of the vampire in the nineteenth century as a metaphor of disorder, especially as interpreted through the root metaphor of the second law of thermodynamics, also known as entropy. The theoretical approach used in the reading of several vampire texts is an entropy theory of literature, a mostly aesthetic approach of relevance to a comparatist study on vampirism and entropy. Chapter One considers the female vampire in one of her earliest nineteenth-century incarnations, the seductive Clarimonde of Theophile Gautier's La Morte amoureuse. Chapter Two is a study of the vampire women in Edgar Allan Poe's …
Extraction And Analysis Of Triazines In Fish Tissues Following A Toxic Exposure: Environmental Factors Affecting Atrazine Toxicity In Fish., Patricia Simmons Gaunt
Extraction And Analysis Of Triazines In Fish Tissues Following A Toxic Exposure: Environmental Factors Affecting Atrazine Toxicity In Fish., Patricia Simmons Gaunt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Rapid, generic, and environmentally friendly methods for extraction and detection of the pesticides atrazine, cyanazine, metribuzin, and simazine were developed for use in monitoring the cause of pesticide related or suspect fish kills. Further, environmental hypoxia and elevated temperature were studied as possible contributors to the toxicity of atrazine in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and as synergistic factors to be considered in investigating fish kill events. Incurred residues from the exposure of catfish to atrazine alone or hypoxia or elevated temperature and atrazine were also analyzed. A commercial enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) was utilized as a screening method for the presence …
Characterization Of Variant Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Long Terminal Repeat Sequences., Charles Richard Madden
Characterization Of Variant Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Long Terminal Repeat Sequences., Charles Richard Madden
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) is the causative agent of a persistent disease in horses. The long terminal repeat (LTR) region of EIAV contains the enhancer and promoter elements necessary for transcription of the proviral genome. The LTR is also prone to a high degree of sequence variability between different virus isolates. Sequence alignments of LTR variants from both tissue culture-adapted strains of the virus as well as sequential horse isolates showed a high degree of sequence variability between variants. Sequence variability was further localized to a hypervariable region approximately 60 bp upstream of the TATA box. This region contained …
The Effects Of Timber Management Activities On Understory Plant Succession In Young Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Plantations., Donald Paul Reed
The Effects Of Timber Management Activities On Understory Plant Succession In Young Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Plantations., Donald Paul Reed
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An understory vegetative succession study was conducted on the LSU Lee Memorial Forest near Bogalusa, Louisiana. Research blocks were established within fifteen-year-old overstocked loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) stands, in specific areas classified as with or without a history of prescribed burning for the current timber rotation. Silvicultural treatments involved precommercially thinning randomly selected blocks to various stand densities, along with the establishment of unthinned control areas. Growth rates of residual trees were determined from tree diameter measurements, on all timbered plots. Burn-history areas received a further treatment, involving the mechanical destruction of all timber on specified areas, followed by site-preparation …
