Ultrastructural Changes In The Milk Gland Of Tsetse Glossina Morsitans Centralis (Diptera; Glissinidae) Female Infected By A Dna Virus, Rosemary C. Sang, Walter G.Z.O. Jura, Leonard H. Otieno, Peter Ogaja Jan 1996

Ultrastructural Changes In The Milk Gland Of Tsetse Glossina Morsitans Centralis (Diptera; Glissinidae) Female Infected By A Dna Virus, Rosemary C. Sang, Walter G.Z.O. Jura, Leonard H. Otieno, Peter Ogaja

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Milk glands, dissected out and collected from Glossina morsitans centralis (Machado) females, artificially inoculated at the third-instar larval stage with a virus suspension obtained from hypertrophied salivary glands of wild-caught virus-infected Glossina pallidipes (Austen), were processed for routine electron microscopy and examined for pathological changes. They were compared to milk glands dissected out from normal female G.m. centralis at the same stage of pregnancy cycle. Upon dissection there were notable physical differences between control and virus-infected milk glands. Histologically, some areas of the gland developed severe degeneration while other areas developed less severe pathological changes. Ultrastructural studies revealed the presence …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

This study examines the external and internal anatomy of the polypneustic (respiratory) lobes in 8 species of tsetse larvae (Diptera: Glossinidae). In the more primitive fusca group, the respiratory lobes are either ring-like (Glossina longipennis) or partially divided into 2 lobes (G. brevipalpis). Two distinctly separated lobes are present in the palpalis group (G. palpalis, G. tachinoides, G. fuscipes) and in the morsitans group (G. morsitans, G. pallidipes, G. austeni). Air enters the polypneustic lobes through narrow slits (stigmata) on the tips of numerous small spiracular papillae that are arranged in rows on both the outer and inner surfaces of …

Comparison Of Resistance In Three Breeds Of Cattle Against African Ixodid Ticks, G. Solomon, G. P. Kaaya Jan 1996

Comparison Of Resistance In Three Breeds Of Cattle Against African Ixodid Ticks, G. Solomon, G. P. Kaaya

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Tick resistance in three breeds of cattle, two indigenous breeds (Arssi and Boran) and one Boran × Friesian cross-breed, were compared following natural tick infestations at Abernossa ranch in Ethiopia. The local Arssi breed was found to have the highest tick resistance, followed by the Boran breed, whereas the Boran × Friesian was the least resistant. Over a period of 12 months, from October 1991 to September 1992, a total of 32 897 ticks composed of four genera were collected from the animals. The four most abundant tick species were Amblyomma variegatum (61.7%), Boophilus decoloratus (16%); Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi (16.3%) …

Genetics Of Resistance To Aphis Craccivora In Cowpea, S. M. Githiri, K. Ampong-Nyarko, E. O. Osir, P. M. Kimani

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Inheritance of aphid resistance and allelic relationships among sources of resistance was studied in the parents, F1, F2, F3, and backcross populations of cowpea crosses. Each 4-day old seedling was infested with five fourth-instar aphids. Seedling reaction was recorded 14-16 days after infestation when the susceptible check was killed. The segregation data from eight crosses between resistant and susceptible cowpea cultivars indicated that aphid resistance was inherited as a monogenic dominant trait. Segregation data from crosses among eight resistant cultivars indicated that one or two loci and modifier(s) were involved in the expression of resistance to aphids. It was suggested …

Identification Of Major Components Of Larviposition Pheromone From Larvae Of Tsetse Flies Glossina Morsitans Morsitans Westwood And Glossina Morsitans Centralis Machado, R. K. Saini, A. Hassanali, J. Andoke, P. Ahuya, W. P. Ouma Jan 1996

Identification Of Major Components Of Larviposition Pheromone From Larvae Of Tsetse Flies Glossina Morsitans Morsitans Westwood And Glossina Morsitans Centralis Machado, R. K. Saini, A. Hassanali, J. Andoke, P. Ahuya, W. P. Ouma

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The presence of pheromones produced by larvae of Glossina morsitans morsitans and G. m. centralis, respectively, which attract gravid females and result in aggregation of pupae, is confirmed. Behavioral experiments indicated that females preferred to larviposit over moist sand conditioned by previously allowing larvae to pupariate in it. Similar results were obtained with filter papers contaminated with the prepupariation excretions of larvae and with volatiles collected from larvae prior to pupariation. n-Pentadecane and n-dodecane were identified as the dominant electrophysiologically active components of the larviposition pheromones of G. m. morsitans and G. m. centralis, respectively, by GC-EAD and GC-MS analysis …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Trap catch size was used to investigate whether Glossina pallidipes and G. longipennis could distinguish between the urine of the African buffalo, cattle, and waterbuck at Nguruman in southwest Kenya, NG2G traps baited with aged urine of these bovids caught significantly more of each tsetse than did the controls. The mean catch of either tsetse species in traps baited with aged urine of buffalo and cattle (tsetse hosts) and waterbuck (a nonhost) did not differ significantly. Aged urine from both tsetse hosts (buffalo and cattle) and the nonhost (waterbuck) was found to contain 4-cresol and 3-n-propylphenol in about the same …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

We assessed the reproductive responses of adult female Iphiseius degenerans and Neoseiulus teke to increasing density of three stages of their prey, Mononychellus tanajoa, on cassava leaf discs under laboratory conditions. The oviposition rates increased with number of prey consumed per predator per day with a maximum of approximately two eggs per day for I. degenerans and four eggs per day for N. teke. The oviposition rate of N. teke was higher when consuming eggs than other prey stages. Neoseiulus teke was more efficient than I. degenerans in converting consumed prey into egg production. The data were adequately described by …

Memory Development And Aging, Jane M. Berry Jan 1996

Memory Development And Aging, Jane M. Berry

Psychology Faculty Publications

And so, over a century ago, William James (1890) anticipated much of what has captured the attention of memory researchers in the ensuing years, particularly those working from the information processing perspective. I use this quote to open my Introduction to Psychological Science lecture on memory development across the lifespan because it alludes to different memory systems and stores, as well as individual and developmental differences in memory processing. In that lecture, questions of which memory processes and stores are most age sensitive are addressed, with the assumption that developmental changes in memory are not necessarily due to chronological age …

A Recent Colonization Of Dolichopoda Cave Crickets In The Poscola Cave (Orthoptera, Rhaphidophoridae), Camilla Bernardini, Claudio Di Russo, Mauro Rampini, Donatella Cersaroni, Valerio Sbordoni

International Journal of Speleology

We report a series of investigations carried out on a Dolichopoda population recently discovered in the Poscola cave and in some small caves nearby (Lessini Mountains, Vicenza). This population is located north of Po river, outside the present known geographic range of this genus in Italy. Morphology of the epiphallus corroborated by chromosome and allozyme analysis indicated that this population belongs to D. laetitiae. Study of the genetic structure of population in the Poscola area revealed high gene flow levels between Poscola and the other minor caves, suggesting the occurrence of a single expanding population. This finding as well …

Gender And Status Inequalities In Yemen: Honour, Economics, And Politics, Sheila Carapico Jan 1996

Gender And Status Inequalities In Yemen: Honour, Economics, And Politics, Sheila Carapico

Political Science Faculty Publications

The aim of this national case study, a synthetic summary of the work and evidence on women in a tribal, Muslim, Arabian, rapidly changing society, is to contribute to the intersection of the Middle Eastern and women-in-development literatures by situating women first within tribal and Islamic settings and then in the context of rapid changes in political and economic circumstances during the past thirty years. It therefore considers feminine roles in the different historical social strata before examining how new services brought by modernization, class formation associated with the penetration of capitalism, and political struggles between right and left all …

Tax Transitions, Opportunistic Retroactivity, And The Benefits Of Government Precommitment, Kyle D. Logue Jan 1996

Tax Transitions, Opportunistic Retroactivity, And The Benefits Of Government Precommitment, Kyle D. Logue

Articles

What if the current federal income tax laws were repealed and replaced with a simple flat tax? What if the entire Internal Revenue Code (with its graduated rates and countless deductions, exclusions, and credits) were scuttled in favor of a broad-based consumption tax? Only a few years ago, such proposals would have seemed radical and extremely unlikely to be adopted. But times are changing. Calls for a drastic overhaul of the Internal Revenue Code have become commonplace, even at the highest levels in the tax-policy community. In addition, proposals that would replace the income tax with a flat-rate broad-based consumption …

Natives, Newcomers And Nativism: A Human Rights Model For The Twenty-First Century, Berta Esperanza Hernández-Truyol

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article undertakes a broad overview of nativist sentiment and discrimination in U.S. social and legal history. Following a powerful vignette of a personal experience encountering nativism because of her accent, the author briefly reviews the history of the New York City Human Rights Commission in Part II. Part III traces the history of U.S. immigration and the parallel legacy of nativism, while Part IV details the legal developments arising from alienage discrimination. After reviewing relevant sources of international human rights law, the author concludes in Part VI by advocating a new human rights paradigm that will promote equality and …

Sanctuary, Redlight Districts, And Washington, D.C.: Some Observations On Neuman's Anomalous Zones (Symposium: Surveying Law And Borders), William I. Miller

Articles

The claim is often made that boundaries obviate disputes if they are clear. But boundaries are inseparable from disputes; they seem to invite them as much as obviate them. Note how natural the collocations "disputed boundary" and "boundary dispute" are. The conventional view that one hears a lot in law schools is that once a bright line is drawn then a boundary is "settled." But that supposes that a clear boundary need not be defended or continually justified or that internal changes in the entity it circumscribes and in some ways defines do not affect the integrity of the boundary. …

Book Review Of "The Battle Of Beginnings: Why Neither Side Is Winning The Creation-Evolution Debate" By Del Ratzsch, Carl J. Bajema Jan 1996

Book Review Of "The Battle Of Beginnings: Why Neither Side Is Winning The Creation-Evolution Debate" By Del Ratzsch, Carl J. Bajema

Other Scholarly Publications

The book is interesting for two reasons. First, the author presents numerous brief negative critiques of many of the arguments that creationists and scientists have employed in debates. Second, this book is an example of the recent strategy by Phillip Johnson and others to redirect the creation-evolution debate to such religious issues as intelligent design. This review will concentrate on Ratszch's discussion of (1) the imperfect nature of science, (2) design arguments and (3) who is entitled to be called a "creationist."

Expression And Regulation Of Homeobox-Like Maize Root-Specific Gene, Zeung-Keun Cho Jan 1996

Expression And Regulation Of Homeobox-Like Maize Root-Specific Gene, Zeung-Keun Cho

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Homeobox genes are known to code for transcription factors regulating developmental programs that are universally represented in animals and plants. Among three $\alpha$-helices and a more flexible fourth helix, helices 3 and 4 recognize specific binding sites of DNA. Amino acid sequences, WFQNRR, are well conserved among both animals and plants. With primers corresponding to these amino acids, putative homeobox genes (Mrx series) are isolated from maize roots through the PCR technique. The translated amino acids are only conserved 17% comparing atypical homeodomains. Based on ectopic expression in Nicotiana tabacum, it is an atypical homeodomain that is expressed in the …

“Introduction” To Perspectives On Anxiety, Fear, And Panic, Debra Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In recent years the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation has returned explicitly to the theme of motivation. The 43d volume is no exception. In the spring of 1995, leading researchers and theorists came together in Lincoln, Nebraska, to offer their perspectives on anxiety, panic, and fear. Clearly, the theme of this year's symposium is closely tied to motivation.

When Titans Clash - The Limits Of Constitutional Adjudication, Alan N. Young Jan 1996

When Titans Clash - The Limits Of Constitutional Adjudication, Alan N. Young

Articles & Book Chapters

The newspaper headline read: "Court rules against rape victims: Advocates shocked as judges give accused right to demand private counselling records." I Once again, members of the public are left with the impression that the Supreme Court of Canada has awarded the spoils of battle to the accused at the expense of sexual assault complainants. In this comment, I hope to demonstrate two critical points. First, in fairness to the court, it cannot be asserted that the court has afforded sexual assault victims less protection than other victims and/or witnesses who have legitimate expectations of informational privacy which they wish …

Minimum Ventilation For Modern Broiler Facilities, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, Shuhui H. Zhang

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

New functions for whole-house broiler heat production as a function of bird age using modern straight run broiler growth rates are presented and compared to values in the literature. The approximations are based on field measurements of environmental conditions in modern broiler housing, using a technique that matches predicted to actual fuel use to estimate partitioning between latent and sensible heat. Development of a program utilizing these approximations to compute ventilation and heating requirements for temperature and humidity control in broiler housing is described. The program utilizes steady-state heat and moisture balances commonly used for design purposes, with hourly or …
