The Remote Causes Of Affirmative Action, Or School Desegregation In Kansas City, Missouri, Richard A. Epstein Jan 1996

The Remote Causes Of Affirmative Action, Or School Desegregation In Kansas City, Missouri, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

Although the language of proximate cause might not capture all the truths about problems of causation, it does capture at least one. There comes a point at which it no longer makes sense to scour the world for remote antecedents of particular harms. The further back one goes, the less the map of causation will look like a river surging toward the sea, and the more it will resemble a delicate network of capillaries meandering toward a common destination, with no dominant beginning or end. Concentrating on the "proximate" identifies the events likely to have had the greatest impact. It …

America's Shifting Fascination With Comparative Corporate Governance, Edward B. Rock Jan 1996

America's Shifting Fascination With Comparative Corporate Governance, Edward B. Rock

Faculty Articles

In this Article, I want to focus on the specific emergence of the comparativist turn in American corporate law scholarship, to try to appraise the significance of the recent American fascination with German and Japanese corporate governance, and to consider what it tells us about the possible path dependance of corporate law scholarship. Before turning to the comparative scholarship, however, I will first try to put it into context by giving a quick and somewhat idiosyncratic overview of the modem history of corporate law scholarship in the United States.

Site-Specific (Local) Delivery Of Antibiotics From Biodegradable Gms Based Implants For The Prevention Of Post-Operative Wound Infections, Saleh Allababidi Jan 1996

Site-Specific (Local) Delivery Of Antibiotics From Biodegradable Gms Based Implants For The Prevention Of Post-Operative Wound Infections, Saleh Allababidi

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Systemic administration of prophylactic antibiotics has been reported to significantly decrease, but not eliminate postoperative infections mainly due to the failure in achieving adequate levels of antibiotics at the surgical wound. The local administration guarantees the delivery of adequate levels of antibiotics and is therefore advantageous as a prophylactic measure. Hence, the overall objective of this study was to develop a glyceryl monostearate (GMS) based biocompatible, bioerodible system to provide short term (1-3 days) local delivery of antibiotics. GMS based matrices were prepared by direct compression. Erosion enhancers were incorporated into the GMS matrix to facilitate the bioerosion and bioabsorption …

Political Implications Of Stagnant Agricultural Productivity In Cambodia, Chad Raymond Jan 1996

Political Implications Of Stagnant Agricultural Productivity In Cambodia, Chad Raymond

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

The paper outlines changes in agricultural production and rural policies in Cambodia since 1953, when the country gained independence from France, and considers whether current rural conditions are different from those that existed during the 1960s, prior to the Khmer Rouge insurgencies. Economic and political reforms begun in 1989 by the Khmer People's Revolutionary Party government have not yet created a sound economy and acceptable living conditions for the majority of Cambodians. About 85 percent to 90 percent of Cambodia's population continues to live in rural areas, mostly as household cultivators, but that food security for peasants is not guaranteed. …

Identification Of Walleye X Sauger Hybrid By Isozyme Electrophoresis, J. E. Fulton, J. S. Otis, K. S. Guise Jan 1996

Identification Of Walleye X Sauger Hybrid By Isozyme Electrophoresis, J. E. Fulton, J. S. Otis, K. S. Guise

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Of 125 phenotypic walleye screened by isozyme electrophoresis, one unusual individual was detected and subsequently suspected of being a walleye (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum) x sauger (S. canadense) hybrid. The isozyme pattern obtained for L-iditol dehydrogenase (IDDH, E.C. 1.1.1.14), phosphoglucomutase (PGM, E.C. 5.4.2.2) and a fast migrating aspartate aminotransferase (AAT, E.C. 2.6.1.1) isozyme showed that this individual had both walleye and sauger isozymes. Isozyme analyses is a useful technique for distinguishing walleye x sauger hybrids from parent species. This is the first report of alleles of the AAT* locus being species specific for sauger and walleye, and the first confirmed report …

The Influence Of Contemporary Music On Responses To Visually Presented Mainstream Sexually Explicit Images, Renee N. Saris Jan 1996

The Influence Of Contemporary Music On Responses To Visually Presented Mainstream Sexually Explicit Images, Renee N. Saris

Open Access Dissertations

This study investigated the influence of contemporary music on young adults’ evaluations of and reponses to sexually explicit erotic, nonviolent pornographic and violent pornographic depictions. Two hundred and ninety-four women and men respondents were administered a survey to assess their experiences with various types of media, including their use of sexually explicit materials. Upon completion of the survey, respondents were exposed to one of three types of music primes (sexist rap, neutral rap, neutral rock/pop), and then viewed six sexually explicit slides (2 erotic, 2 nonviolent pornographic, 2 violent pornographic). Respondents were asked to evaluate each slide by means of …
