Macmarcks And The Protein Kinase C Signal Transduction Pathway: Role In Neural Secretion And Neural Development, Sandy Chang Jan 1996

Macmarcks And The Protein Kinase C Signal Transduction Pathway: Role In Neural Secretion And Neural Development, Sandy Chang

Student Theses and Dissertations

MacMARCKS is a second member of the MARCKS family of PKC substrates which integrate signal transduction events with changes to the actin cytoskeleton. Work presented here demonstrates diverse roles for MacMARCKS ranging from neural secretion to neural development. Chapters 3 and 4 describe the role of MacMARCKS in neural secretion. MacMARCKS is phosphorylated in a stimulus-dependent manner in rat brain synaptosomes and PC12 cells. It is localized to cell bodies and neurite tips of PC12 cells as well as being present on synaptic vesicles. A dominant-negative mutation in the MacMARCKS effector domain which abolishes PKC-dependent phosphorylation is associated with changes …

Molecular Genetic Analysis Of Cyclic Gmp Signaling In Higher Plants, Robert B. Mcgrath Jan 1996

Molecular Genetic Analysis Of Cyclic Gmp Signaling In Higher Plants, Robert B. Mcgrath

Student Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the mechanisms by which light signals are transmitted within a plant to elicit changes in physiology and gene expression is a primary goal of current research. Recently, significant insights have been gained regarding the signal transduction pathway that is regulated by the red/far-red light receptor phytochrome. Moreover, it has become clear that the phytochrome signaling pathway functions within the context of a global regulatory network that exists in plants and permits fine control of a multitude of responses to various environmental conditions. In this study, an investigation of the basic mechanisms of phytochrome signal transduction, and the way this …

Molecular Genetic Analysis Of Rodent Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, Wendy Chung Jan 1996

Molecular Genetic Analysis Of Rodent Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, Wendy Chung

Student Theses and Dissertations

Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is perhaps the most common metabolic disorder in humans. In its essence, NIDDM is a disorder of glucose homeostasis which results from a relative deficiency of circulating insulin. Approximately 15% of all Americans over the age of 60 and 100 million individuals worldwide are affected by this disease whose micro- and macrovascular complications include blindness, nephropathy, neuropathy, and atherosclerosis. There is a close association between obesity and NIDDM, due in part to the increased insulin resistance imposed by increased body fat. The large genetic contribution to susceptibility to NIDDM is evidenced by the nearly 100% …

Of Causes And Clients: Two Tales Of Roe V. Wade, Kevin C. Mcmunigal Jan 1996

Of Causes And Clients: Two Tales Of Roe V. Wade, Kevin C. Mcmunigal

UC Law Journal

Both scholarly and political concern has focused in recent years on the interaction between lawyers and clients in public interest practice. Critics claim that public interest lawyers dominate their clients and subordinate their interests to advance their own social and political agendas. In assessing the validity of these claims, we rarely have access to detailed accounts of public interest litigation from both the client's and the lawyer's perspectives. Professor McMunigal relies on two recent accounts of the landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade, one from the client's perspective and one from the lawyer's, to examine the dynamics of lawyer-client interaction, …

Ridicule Or Recourse: Parents Falsely Accused Of Past Sexual Abuse Fight Back , Jeffrey M. Whitesell

Journal of Law and Health

This Note argues that wrongly accused parents should be granted standing by the courts to bring suit against therapists who negligently suggest that their children are victims of sexual abuse. The first section will analyze the validity of recovered memories obtained through the use of various suggestive techniques. The second section will explore the various causes of action that courts are considering actionable by innocent third parties against the therapists who implant false memories. The causes of action that will be analyzed are malpractice, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, defamation, loss of companionship and society, and breach of contract. …

Characterization Of A Basolateral Electroneutral Na+/H+ Antiporter In Atlantic Lobster (Homarus Americanus) Hepatopancreatic Epithelial Vesicles, Jeff Duerr, Gregory A. Ahearn Jan 1996

Characterization Of A Basolateral Electroneutral Na+/H+ Antiporter In Atlantic Lobster (Homarus Americanus) Hepatopancreatic Epithelial Vesicles, Jeff Duerr, Gregory A. Ahearn

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Purified basolateral membrane vesicles (BLMVs) were prepared from Atlantic lobster (Homarus americanus) hepatopancreas using a Percoll density gradient technique. Enrichments of the Na+/K+-ATPase and alkaline phosphatase activities of these vesicles were 15.4- and 1.2- fold, respectively. The presence of amiloride-sensitive Na+/H+ exchange was demonstrated. Contrary to electrogenic 2Na+/1H+ exchange on apical membranes from the same tissue, kinetic studies of Na+ transport by these basolateral membranes indicate an electroneutral antiport with a Km of 28±1.7 mmol l21 and a Jmax of 1.74±0.13 mmol mg21 min21. Amiloride interacted at a single binding site (Ki=39mmol l21) and external Li+ was shown to be …

A Hands-On Nutritional Curriculum For Children Ages Five To Eleven, Teryl L. Fricke Jan 1996

A Hands-On Nutritional Curriculum For Children Ages Five To Eleven, Teryl L. Fricke

Theses

This thesis will focus on the development of a nutrition curriculum to be used as a continuing education program at the community college level for children from the ages of five to eleven years.

Research indicates that American children are becoming physically unfit and overweight at an alarming rate . Because this condition seems to be the rule rather than the exception, it becomes important to the future health of our children that they be educated in proper selection of foods and eating habits.

Research also indicates that the health curriculums of local public school districts touch on the nutritional …

Race And Political Empowerment: The Crisis Of Black Leadership, William E. Nelson Jr. Jan 1996

Race And Political Empowerment: The Crisis Of Black Leadership, William E. Nelson Jr.

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

W.E.B. Du Bois demonstrated poignant insight into the character of American society when he predicted in 1901 that the fundamental problem of the 20th Century would be the problem of the color line. Du Bois was writing in the aftermath of the first reconstruction that saw the institutionalization of Jim Crow and white dominance across the South. This period was symbolized by the infamous Plessy v. Ferguson decision in 1896. It was also marked by the capitulation of white Republican custodians of Reconstruction to the racist demands of southern politics, including the massive ejection of Black politicians from public office, …

Tapping The Wisdom Of The Ancestors: An Attempt To Recast Vodou And Morality Through The Voice Of Mama Lola And Karen Mccarthy Brown, Claudine Michel

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

The focus of this Research Report is on morality as a culture-specific and contextual phenomenon. It argues that Vodou, as a religion, has largely been misrepresented in the West and has been portrayed as having no legitimate basis for morality mainly because of its African origins. This paper attempts to interpret morality in Vodou by presenting a model of ethics construction grounded in the history of the people and based on the true meaning of the religion. It argues that Haitians have turned to their ancestral religion and to their African past to survive isolation and ostracism from the West …

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Mycobacterium avium-M. intracellulare complex (MAC) is the most frequent cause of opportunistic bacterial infection in patients with AIDS. Previous studies have indicated that liposome-encapsulated aminoglycosides are highly effective in treating MAC infections in mice. We investigated whether the fluoroquinolone sparfloxacin is effective in treating MAC infection in the murine macrophage-like cell line J774. Sparfloxacin was encapsulated in the membrane phase of multilamellar liposomes composed of phosphatidylglycerol-phosphatidylcholine-cholesterol (1:1:1 molar ratio). MAC-infected macrophages were treated for either 24 h or 4 days with free or liposome-encapsulated sparfloxacin. Treatment with free or liposome- encapsulated sparfloxacin (6 μg/ml) for 24 h resulted in the …

A Little Known History Of Truth, Steven H. Goldberg Jan 1996

A Little Known History Of Truth, Steven H. Goldberg

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This was written in response to a call from the W.M. Keck Foundation for essays on the topic: To what extent should the ethical responsibilities of a lawyer in civil litigation include the obligation to assist the judge or jury in arriving at the truth? I am grateful to the W.M. Keck Foundation for pressing the important dialogue about how our legal system and those who work in it ought to serve our society and for forcing me to think again about why we lawyers are who we are. It took me almost thirty years of trying cases, deaning, and …
