Benefits Of Hypermedia For The Learner, John Semprini Jan 1996

Benefits Of Hypermedia For The Learner, John Semprini

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The use of multimedia programs, CD-ROM, laser discs, and the World Wide Web (WWW) are exploding. A revolution in communication has begun. Why do some educational experts think these computer applications can make a positive educational impact? Technology available today can be used as a tool to motivate, inspire, and help students experience the "joy of learning." Technology can enhance learning in a large group, small group, or individual settings. Today's technology can enhance learning by students of different learning styles, make individualized instruction and mastery learning possible, help develop intelligence in students, and allow students to become producers of …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Cocaine Analogs For Activity As Cocaine Antagonists And Synthesis Of Novel Prodrugs With Antiarthritic Potential, Bonnie Lisa Barr Jan 1996

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Cocaine Analogs For Activity As Cocaine Antagonists And Synthesis Of Novel Prodrugs With Antiarthritic Potential, Bonnie Lisa Barr

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

As a follow up to interest in a new class of agents that have potential for the treatment of arthritic conditions, two series of cocaine derivatives were synthesized. Specifically, an N-alkyl series consisting of the ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl and benzyl norcocaine derivatives and an N-acyl series consisting of the acetyl, propionyl, butyryl, and benzoyl norcocaine derivatives were synthesized. The structures of these compounds were verified using GC/MS, 1H NMR, and FT-IR with support from elemental analysis. Evaluation of the effect of these cocaine analogs on the inhibition of dopamine uptake represented the biological focus of this project. Each of …

Modern Western Discourse On The Subject, Jongryul Choi Jan 1996

Modern Western Discourse On The Subject, Jongryul Choi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the modern Western discourse on the subject. This thesis will trace the roots of the modern Western discourse on the subject from the Enlightenment era, which saw the subject as being autonomous, rational, stable, and self-constitutive. It will contend that the Hegelian subject was the culmination of the notion of the modern Western subject. Lacanian psychoanalysis will be used to show how this fictitious feature is constituted by the Oedipus story and how it works. This thesis will show that the modern Western politics was based on this fictitious subject, exemplified by …

Snap, Crackle, Webwindows!, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wojtek Furmanski

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We elaborate the SNAP---Scalable (ATM) Network and (PC) Platforms---view of computing in the year 2000. The World Wide Web will continue its rapid evolution, and in the future, applications will not be written for Windows NT/95 or UNIX, but rather for WebWindows with interfaces defined by the standards of Web servers and clients. This universal environment will support WebTop productivity tools, such as WebWord, WebLotus123, and WebNotes built in modular dynamic fashion, and undermining the business model for large software companies. We define a layered WebWindows software architecture in which applications are built on top of multi-use services. We discuss …

Diet And Seasonal Feeding Habits Of The Yellow Stingray, Urolophus Jamaicensis, T. Patrick Quinn Jan 1996

Diet And Seasonal Feeding Habits Of The Yellow Stingray, Urolophus Jamaicensis, T. Patrick Quinn

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Urolophus jamaicensis, the yellow stingray, is a common elasmobranch found on and around the coral reefs off Florida's southeastern coast. Its diet consists of polychaetes, crustaceans, nemerteans, sipunculids, nematodes, and chaetognaths with polychaetes and crustaceans comprising almost 67% of the stomach contents by volume. There does not appear to be any diet preference between the male and females stingrays. The seasonal changes in diet preference are limited to an increase in the proportion of polychaetes found in the stomach during spring when compared to fall.

What's Left?: Hate Speech, Pornography, And The Problem For Artistic Expression, Amy M. Adler Jan 1996

What's Left?: Hate Speech, Pornography, And The Problem For Artistic Expression, Amy M. Adler

Faculty Articles

Some portion of the political left in the United States has called for the restriction of pornography and hate speech. Those who advocate such censorship do so on the ground that pornography and hate speech cause harm to disadvantaged "outsider" groups in society. For this reason, the leftist censorship advocates do not accept traditional First Amendment doctrines that protect much pornography and hate speech. In calling for censorship, the author argues, leftists endanger a great deal of activist speech, particularly in the form of artwork, that in fact seeks to undermine the very pornography and hate speech the censorship advocates …

Simulated Growth And Production Of Endangered Snake River Sockeye Salmon: Assessing Management Strategies For The Nursery Lakes, Chris Luecke, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Phaedra E. Budy, H. P. Gross

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

We examined the potential of employing a series of lake management strategies to enhance production of endangered Snake River sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in its historical nursery lakes in central Idaho. We used a combination of limnological sampling, experimentation, and simulation modeling to assess effects of lake fertilization and kokanee reduction on growth and survival of juvenile sockeye salmon. Juvenile sockeye salmon from a broodstock of this endangered species are being introduced into the lakes from 1995 to 1998. Results of our analyses indicated that several lakes were suitable for receiving broodstock progeny. Field experimentation and simulation modeling indicated that …

Growth Implants For Steers, Terry L. Mader, James Dahlquist, Robert Botts Jan 1996

Growth Implants For Steers, Terry L. Mader, James Dahlquist, Robert Botts

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Trenbolone acetate (TBA), an implant (Finaplix®) with androgenic activity, stimulates growth and enhances feed efficiency much like implants with estrogenic activity (Ralgro®, Synovex®, Implus® and Compudose®). Because androgenic and estrogenic products tend to have different mechanisms of action, the combination of TBA and an estrogenic implant have been shown to be most beneficial. Revalor® S, a combination product containing 24 mg estradiol (E2) and 120 mg TBA. is an effective implant. particularly when used in feedlot steers 100 to 120 days before slaughter. Other products and combinations of TBA and estradiol may be just as effective. The objective of this …
