Modeling 210pb-Derived Mixing Activity In Ocean Margin Sediments: Diffusive Versus Nonlocal Mixing, Karline Soetaert, Peter M. J. Herman, Jack J. Middelburg, C. Heip, Henko S. Destigter, Tjeerd C. E. Van Weering, E. Epping, W. Helder

Journal of Marine Research

The influence of sediment mixing on activity versus depth profiles of the radionuclide 210Pb in the upper 20 cm of the sediments has been investigated along a depth transect (208 m-4500 m, 17 stations) in the OMEX study area (Goban Spur, NE Atlantic Ocean). A hierarchical family of bioturbation/nonlocal exchange models was derived. Each member of the hierarchy includes all processes of the previous model, and adds a one- or two-parameter process. The significance of the additional parameters is tested using a one-tailed F-test. It was found that (1) in five cases there is a significant improvement when …

Spatial Variation In Short-Term (234th) Sediment Bioturbation Intensity Along An Organic-Carbon Gradient, Robert A. Wheatcroft, William R. Martin Jan 1996

Spatial Variation In Short-Term (234th) Sediment Bioturbation Intensity Along An Organic-Carbon Gradient, Robert A. Wheatcroft, William R. Martin

Journal of Marine Research

Natural and human-induced spatial gradients provide a useful vehicle with which to better understand diverse marine processes. On the Palos Verdes margin (S. California), historical and ongoing waste-water discharge has created an along-shelf gradient in organic C and total N, as well as various trace metals and other pollutants (e.g., DDT). To better understand the impact of such pollution on bioturbation and to develop a more general understanding of the controlling factors of sediment bioturbation intensity, a series of stations representing severely, moderately and negligibly impacted sediments was studied. Vertical profiles of the naturally occurring radionuclide, 234Th, as well …

Patent Reexamination And The Pto: Compton's Patent Invalidated At The Commissioner's Request, 14 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 379 (1996), Terri Suzette Hughes

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

In 1985, two executives at Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc. introduced the idea of a multimedia search system that interfaxed textual and graphical entry paths in a single database. At that time, Encyclopedia Britannica was not interested in publishing its own volumes of encyclopedias in an electronic format. Instead, they decided to make Compton’s Encyclopedia the basis of the proposed multimedia encyclopedia. On August 31, 1993, the PTO issued U.S. patent 5,241,671 for a multimedia search system to fourteen inventors who had previously assigned all their patent rights of the claimed invention to Encyclopedia Britannica. Questions arose about the validity of the …

Discovery Of Computer Stored Documents And Computer Based Litigation Support Systems: Why Give Up More Than Necessary, 14 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 523 (1996), Patrick R. Grady

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

This comment discusses discovery issues related to documents stored on a computer or litigation support system. The basics of computer information storage, business records systems, and litigation support systems are discussed. To eliminate unnecessary discovery, this comment suggests the creation of a record retention system that takes into consideration the company’s need of efficient storage, archival of information, and destruction of documents no longer legally required to be kept. An in-house counsel’s ethical considerations for document destruction are also discussed, as well as his or her ability to protect litigation support systems from unnecessary discovery with the work product privilege.

The Changing School, Nancy L. File

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The increasing use of technology in our schools has required educators to take a serious look at the way we are teaching our students. The classroom of today is very different than that of just a few years ago. The availability of the rapidly developing computer-related technologies has had the most dramatic effect in our schools. We are now in the information age, and our teaching and learning styles must reflect that.

Teachers As Information Specialists, Marjorie L. Pappas Jan 1996

Teachers As Information Specialists, Marjorie L. Pappas

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Today's children will inherit an information-rich world where knowledge and learning will be a critical part of their lives. Lewis Perelman (1992) suggested:

Learning or education was a task of childhood in preparation for entering adult life and work. Now learning is literally the work of the majority of U.S. jobs and will be what virtually all adults-whether employed, unemployed, or 'on welfare'-will do for a living the early years of the twenty-first century. (p. 23)

Technology is fueling this information-rich environment and enabling a paradigm shift as storage formats change from paper to electronic.

How Will Technology Change The Teacher's Role?, Raymond Smith

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Today, technology in the schools is causing several changes. With the advances in communications along with access to powerful computers in the world, we are seeing the role of the teacher being changed in several areas.

With high speed communications such as the Internet, students can now meet and exchange ideas instantly with others anywhere in the world. Students can now start to understand other cultures firsthand. World wide communications will create new educational materials that will allow teachers to set up "people to people" projects on the Internet. These projects could include "Keypal," the U.S. Post Office equivalent of …

Teaching The Elephant To Dance: Privatizing The Fda Review Process, Elizabeth Price Foley, Elizabeth C. Price

Faculty Publications

Considers the implications of privatizing the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) review of the safety and efficacy of medical devices and drugs. Concludes that the FDA's flaws - namely, a risk avoidance culture and autocratic style of regulation - can only be accomplished by breaking the agency's monopolization of this review function.

Ec96-779 Lagoons For Management Of Livestock Manure, Gerald R. Bodman Jan 1996

Ec96-779 Lagoons For Management Of Livestock Manure, Gerald R. Bodman

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

A lagoon is a specifically designed manure storage facility. A properly designed lagoon also functions as a treatment system. Manure in any storage facility undergoes some biological decomposition. However, any decomposition of organic matter which occurs in a conventional storage is coincidental and not part of the design procedure or considerations.

The proper design of a lagoon gives special consideration to biological decomposition of organic matter. In fact, the design is intended to promote or enhance the breakdown of organic matter.

This publication discusses the types of lagoons. It covers the design, construction, and guidelines of maintaining a lagoon.

Ancient Answers To Modern Questions: Death, Dying, And Organ Transplants - A Jewish Law Perspective, Stephen J. Werber Jan 1996

Ancient Answers To Modern Questions: Death, Dying, And Organ Transplants - A Jewish Law Perspective, Stephen J. Werber

Journal of Law and Health

To understand the application of Jewish Law to issues of death and the dying process one must first be aware of the importance of life, and saving life (pikuach nefesh), in Jewish thought. Judaism "attribut[es] . . . infinite value to human life. Infinity being indivisible, any fraction of life, however limited its expectancy or its health, remains equally infinite in value." The Mishnah teaches that creation began with a single human being to "teach you that to destroy a single human soul is equivalent to destroying an entire world; and that to sustain a single soul is …

The Different Worlds Of High School Biology And Physical Science Teachers, William W. Cobern, Adrienne T. Gibson, Scott A. Underwood Jan 1996

The Different Worlds Of High School Biology And Physical Science Teachers, William W. Cobern, Adrienne T. Gibson, Scott A. Underwood

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

A science teacher not only presents scientific concepts, but tacitly creates a context in which scientific concepts are presented to the class. This context can be strongly influenced by teacher beliefs or worldview. In the current research, teacher worldviews with respect to the essence of nature were examined. Two biology and two physical science teachers individually sat for qualitative interviews. The same interview protocols were used in a concurrent study involving ninth graders at their high school. The analysis led to three assertions: (1) When compared with their students, the science teachers had a much more focused and less diverse …
