Pluralism, Science, Ethics, And The Intersecting Spheres Of Social Concerns And Environmentalism, Christopher B. Barrett, Raymond E. Grizzle Jan 1996

Pluralism, Science, Ethics, And The Intersecting Spheres Of Social Concerns And Environmentalism, Christopher B. Barrett, Raymond E. Grizzle

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper builds on alternative perspectives offered by the environmental and sustainability traditions to advance a holistic yet practical conceptual model that explicitly integrates social and environmental concerns. Ours is a pluralistic approach founded on synthesis. Employing the economic concept of path dependence, we emphasize that there exist multiple paths society can follow in environmental ethics and policy, but that onc e one has been chosen, implicitly or explicitly, there may be little opportunity to reverse such choices. Hence, the importance of process to the pursuit of social and environmental objectives.

The Law Of Markets As Enunciated By Jean-Baptiste Say, L. Dwight Israelsen, Kenneth K. Sanders Jan 1996

The Law Of Markets As Enunciated By Jean-Baptiste Say, L. Dwight Israelsen, Kenneth K. Sanders

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Supply creates its own demand. So reads the common, terse rendering of Say's Law of Markets. With such philosophical abbreviations, it can be of little wonder why the economic logic contained in the Law of Markets has been misunderstood, disparaged, and completely disavowed by the majority of economists for the past five decades. Adherents, as well as detractors, seemingly have not understood it. An example of recent vintage is George Gilder, a neoconservative "economic theorist" who, in confusion, found John Kenneth Galbraith rediscovering Say's Law-business creates consumer desires, hence, consumer demand. Joseph Schumpeter even made the claim that J.-B. Say …

An Analysis Of Iodine Deficiency Disorder And Eradication Strategies In The High Atlas Mountains Of Morocco, Elizabeth Anne Oldham, Christopher B. Barrett, Sabah Benjelloun, Brahim Ahanou Jan 1996

An Analysis Of Iodine Deficiency Disorder And Eradication Strategies In The High Atlas Mountains Of Morocco, Elizabeth Anne Oldham, Christopher B. Barrett, Sabah Benjelloun, Brahim Ahanou

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The population of the Ounein Valley in the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco is at high risk of iodine deficiency. We investigated local children's iodine deficiency and goiterpattems as well as food consumption habits through a household survey. Median urinary iodine content and goiter analysis both reflect moderate iodine deficiency. Total fish consumption has a statistically significant, positive effect on urinary iodine content. Fish consumption, like that of salt, is closely related to market access. Respondents are uniformly unaware of the dietary etiology of goiter. An effective strategy to reduce the high incidence of iodine deficiency disorder among children in …

Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers And Silvicultural Practice: Is Uneven-Aged? Silviculture Preferable To Even-Aged, D. Craig Rudolph, Richard N. Conner

Faculty Publications

The endangered red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) has become a high-profile management issue in the southeastern United States. Suitable habitat consists of mature to old pine, or mixed pine-hardwood forest, with minimal hardwood midstory vegetation. Loss of habitat, detrimental silvicultural practices, and changes in the fire regime have resulted in small fragmented populations, most of which have been declining precipitously in recent decades (Costa and Escano 1989, Conner and Rudolph 1989). The current population of l0-12 thousand birds occurs across much of the original range from Virginia and Florida west to Oklahoma and Texas (James 1995). However, populations are restricted to …

Effects Of Aging And Strength Training On Shortening And Lengthening Muscle Actions In Women, Michelle Marie Porter Jan 1996

Effects Of Aging And Strength Training On Shortening And Lengthening Muscle Actions In Women, Michelle Marie Porter

Digitized Theses

There has been much research on strength changes with aging and the consequent effects of resistance training, however, relatively little is known about lengthening (eccentric; ECC) muscle actions. The purposes of these studies were to develop a method of testing and training plantar (PF) and dorsiflexion (DF) of the ankle in a standing position in order to investigate age-related and training effects on shortening (concentric; CONC) and ECC peak torque (PT) in women.;All subjects were healthy and physically active, and performed all testing and training on an isokinetic dynamometer. Strength testing was performed in both standing and supine positions at …

Properties And Regulation Of The Calcium Ion Pump In Heart And Skeletal Muscle Sarcoplasmic Reticulum, Cynthia Elaine Hawkins Jan 1996

Properties And Regulation Of The Calcium Ion Pump In Heart And Skeletal Muscle Sarcoplasmic Reticulum, Cynthia Elaine Hawkins

Digitized Theses

In heart and skeletal muscle, the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) plays a critical role in the contraction-relaxation cycle of the myocyte: a Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar} channel releases Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar} from SR into cytoplasm to trigger contraction, and a Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar} pump resequesters Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar} to cause relaxation. A major regulator of this cycle is {dollar}\rm Ca\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar}/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase (CaM kinase), which is known to phosphorylate and thereby activate the cardiac SR Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar} pump, Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar} channel and endogenous Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar}-pump inhibitor phospholamban. This thesis examines the Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar} pump and its regulation in different tissues (cardiac, slow-twitch and fast-twitch muscle SR: CMSR, SMSR and FMSR) and different stages in …

Some Physiological Effects Of Stress In The American Cockroach Periplaneta Americana (L), Shigui Liu Jan 1996

Some Physiological Effects Of Stress In The American Cockroach Periplaneta Americana (L), Shigui Liu

Digitized Theses

The effects of different forms of stress on the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (L.) have been systematically examined. This study demonstrated that at least two stress-related events occurred in the haemolymph of the American cockroach. First, the data clearly indicated that a large increase in hypertrehalosemic hormones occurred in the haemolymph of stressed cockroaches. Secondly, proteolytic activity in the haemolymph of stressed cockroaches was greatly increased. The increase of both hypertrehalosemic hormones and proteolytic activity in the haemolymph appeared to be a non-specific response to different forms of stress, including chemical poisoning with lindane, immobilization, forced movement, starvation, and elevated …

Limbic Mechanisms Controlling Arterial Pressure, Stefanie Roder Jan 1996

Limbic Mechanisms Controlling Arterial Pressure, Stefanie Roder

Digitized Theses

Three series of experiments were done to investigate the output pathways from the central nucleus of the amygdala (ACe) involved in the control of arterial pressure. The first series of experiments provided the first demonstration that the arterial pressure responses elicited during stimulation of ACe were mediated via a direct pathway to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST). Microinjection of retrograde tract tracers into depressor regions of BST resulted in labelled neurons within predominantly the lateral subdivision of ACe. In addition, iontophoresis of the anterograde tract tracer PHA-L into cardiovascular responsive regions of ACe resulted in fiber and …

Expression Of Sodium Pump Subunit Genes During Mouse Preimplantation Development, Daniel James Macphee Jan 1996

Expression Of Sodium Pump Subunit Genes During Mouse Preimplantation Development, Daniel James Macphee

Digitized Theses

The Na,K-ATPase or sodium pump is an enzyme that is found in most animal cells. The enzyme pumps sodium and potassium ions against their concentration gradients and is hypothesized to be a mediator of fluid accumulation during mouse preimplantation development. The purpose of the present study was to determine, using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), whether all {dollar}\alpha\ (\alpha1,\ \alpha2,\ \alpha3,\ \alpha4{dollar}) and {dollar}\beta\ (\beta1{dollar} and {dollar}\beta{dollar}2) isoforms of the sodium pump were expressed during preimplantation development. Previous work by Watson and Kidder (1988) had shown that the {dollar}\alpha{dollar} subunit was localized to the basolateral domains of mural trophectoderm surrounding …

Role Of Nitric Oxide In Interleukin-2 Therapy-Induced Capillary Leak Syndrome, Amila Orucevic Jan 1996

Role Of Nitric Oxide In Interleukin-2 Therapy-Induced Capillary Leak Syndrome, Amila Orucevic

Digitized Theses

Systemic interleukin-2 (IL-2) therapy has been limited by a major side effect known as "capillary leak syndrome", characterized by retention of extravascular fluid, severe hypotension, and multiple organ system dysfunction. The present study tested the hypothesis that an overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) induced by IL-2 therapy was, at least in part, responsible for this syndrome. Studies were undertaken in healthy or C3-L5 mammary adenocarcinoma bearing C3H/HeJ mice to evaluate whether treatment with inhibitors of NO synthesis (N{dollar}\rm\sp{lcub}G{rcub}{dollar}-Methyl-L-Arginine, NMMA and N{dollar}\rm\sp{lcub}G{rcub}{dollar}-Nitro-L-Arginine methyl ester, L-NAME) can prevent IL-2 induced capillary leakage without compromising the therapeutic benefit of IL-2. Intraperitoneal IL-2 therapy …

Male Reproductive Success And The Mating System Of Bushy-Tailed Woodrats, Michael Graham Topping Jan 1996

Male Reproductive Success And The Mating System Of Bushy-Tailed Woodrats, Michael Graham Topping

Digitized Theses

Bushy-tailed woodrats are nocturnal cricetid rodents distributed throughout the mountainous regions of western North America. Despite a number of studies on the population ecology of this species, little is known about the behaviour of males during the breeding season.;I investigated the reproductive behaviour of male bushy-tailed woodrats in three ways. First, I examined the spatial distribution of individuals within a breeding population, using radiotelemetry and mark-recapture livetrapping. Both males and females exhibited considerable overlap with animals of both sexes, mean intersexual and intrasexual overlap values for each sex did not differ in two of the three years of study. This …

Central Cardiorespiratory And Peripheral Metabolic Influences On Kinetics Of Oxygen Uptake In Older Humans, Philip David Chilibeck Jan 1996

Central Cardiorespiratory And Peripheral Metabolic Influences On Kinetics Of Oxygen Uptake In Older Humans, Philip David Chilibeck

Digitized Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to determine which factors influence oxygen uptake (VO{dollar}\sb2){dollar} kinetics during exercise in old individuals. These factors may include central {dollar}\rm O\sb2{dollar} delivery (i.e. cardiac output kinetics), the rate of O{dollar}\sb2{dollar} delivery at the exercising muscle, and the rate at which mitochondria can use O{dollar}\sb2.{dollar} Fitness level may also influence VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} kinetics, by affecting the above factors. These factors were estimated by measuring heart rate (HR) kinetics, muscle capillarization, and citrate synthase (CS) activity, respectively, in groups of old ({dollar}\sim{dollar}65y) and young ({dollar}\sim{dollar}26y) individuals. Capillarization and CS activity of the lateral gastrocnemius were compared to …

The Central Serotonergic And Cholinergic Systems As Activators Of The Electrocorticogram And Behavior, Hans Christian Dringenberg Jan 1996

The Central Serotonergic And Cholinergic Systems As Activators Of The Electrocorticogram And Behavior, Hans Christian Dringenberg

Digitized Theses

Experiments were performed on the role of ascending cholinergic and serotonergic electrocortical activating systems and their role in normal physiology and behavior. In urethane-anesthetized rats, electrocortical activation could be obtained by electrical stimulation of the amygdala, the dorsal raphe, the locus coeruleus area, the superior colliculus, and the orbitofrontal cortex. Activation elicited from the amygdala, the locus coeruleus area, and most orbitofrontal sites was abolished by systemic administration of the cholinergic-muscarinic antagonists scopolamine or atropine. Activation elicited from the dorsal raphe or superior colliculus was largely resistant to anti-muscarinic treatment but was abolished by methiothepin, a serotonergic antagonist. Infusions of …

Ball Four: The Irs Walks The Kansas City Royals, Myreon Sony Hodur

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The IRS will grant deductions for money spent on charitable purposes. One such purpose is lessening the burdens of governments. In 1993 the IRS granted a deduction worth almost $100 million to the estate of Ewing M. Kauffman for his donation of the Kansas City Royals baseball team to a local community foundation under a "Succession Plan." That arrangement would give local buyers preference in bidding to purchase the team from the foundation. The IRS found that the Succession Plan lessened the burden of government insofar as it relieved Kansas City area governments of their burden in keeping the franchise …
