8. Nous (Novel), Matthew Lipman
8. Nous (Novel), Matthew Lipman
Later Elementary School Curriculum
Pixie has invented this short novel, which is the sequel to the story she narrated in the novel Pixie. In this story, we are introduced to an intelligent giraffe confronted with a moral dilemma. The Giraffe, whose name is Nous, thinks first of what her moral obligations would be as a person of virtuous character. Brian and Pixie, along with their classmates, try to help her by discussing what a moral education should be. In so doing they help Nous decide what to do, even though it is not a decision they favor. Matthew Lipman's Nous is a wonderful …

9. Deciding What To Do: Instructional Manual To Accompany "Nous", Matthew Lipman
Later Elementary School Curriculum
Deciding What to Do consists of a variety of exercises and discussion plans with which teachers can initiate or flesh out classroom discussion of concepts in the Nous program. The program concentrates on some of the ethical considerations children should take into account deciding what to do when faced with a moral problem.

International Organizations And Tuna Management; Problems And Future Prospects, Yuh-Chen Chern
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
A large number of marine species migrate within and without national jurisdictions and a small number occur entirely outside any national jurisdiction. Thus, the species migrating through waters under the jurisdiction of coastal states to high seas beyond the jurisdiction of any single state are defined as highly migratory species (HMS). International organizations play a key role in the management of highly migratory species. Most of the international organizations concerned with HMS focus on tuna management.
The Role Of The Federal Aid In Sportfish Restoration Program In Promoting State Marine Artificial Reef Development Activities, Loren Clark Evans
The Role Of The Federal Aid In Sportfish Restoration Program In Promoting State Marine Artificial Reef Development Activities, Loren Clark Evans
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The passage of the Wallop-Breaux Amendments to the Federal Aid in Sportfish Restoration Program (FASRP), in 1984, significantly increased the funding available to states participating in the Program. Subsequently, the FASRP became the largest single source of funding for state marine artificial reef development activities. In recent years, there has been concern among program constituents that FASRP funds are not being utilized as intended. The principle question of the current research focused on how effective FASRP subsidies have been in providing meaningful benefits to state fisheries management programs. Specifically, the research focused on the application of FASRP monies in promoting …

The Consolation Of Philosophy, Shawna Purcell
The Consolation Of Philosophy, Shawna Purcell
Anthós Journal (1990-1996)
As twentieth century readers we can understand earlier works such as the Consolation of Philosophy by reading it against a traditional background and applying the four fold scheme of interpretation. This paper shows how Boethius has deeply woven into his poems the philosophies and writing styles of his predecessors Homer, Seneca, Ovid and Plato, including the Stoics. In addition, this paper shows that, like the planets, each unique, but made of similar elements, Boethius attained his own notoriety by building on the works of his predecessors.

Decision Record And Finding Of No Significant Impact For Sodium Leasing In The Green River Basin Of Southwestern Wyoming, United States Department Of The Interior Bureau Of Land Management
Record of Decisions (WY)
The BLM is charged with leasing federal mineral resources. BLM is proposing to hold a sodium lease sale of seven tracts incorporating a total of 9,893.91 acres as shown on Map 1. Federal sodium leases are issued based upon a system of closed competitive bids. The highest bidder may receive the lease provided the bid meets or exceeds fair market value. Leases have a 20-year primary term with discretionary 10-year renewal periods thereafter. A federal sodium lease is not automatically renewed but may be renewed upon the lessee's timely request for renewal. All leases adjudicated for renewal are reviewed and …

Final Environmental Impact Statements (WY)
This final environmental impact statement (EIS) describes the proposed Grass Creek Resource Management Plan (RMP) and its environmental consequences. This proposed plan is for the future management of public lands in a portion of the Bighorn Basin Resource Area of the Worland District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The planning area comprises approximately 968,000 acres of BLM-administered public land surface and 1,171,000 acres of BLM-administered federal mineral estate. (BLM-administered public land surface is referred to as "public land" in this document.)

The Effects Of Seagrass Patch Size And Energy Regime On Growth Of A Suspension-Feeding Bivalve, E. A. Irlandi
The Effects Of Seagrass Patch Size And Energy Regime On Growth Of A Suspension-Feeding Bivalve, E. A. Irlandi
Journal of Marine Research
An investigation of how the presence of seagrass and seagrass patch size in high- and low-energy environments affected growth of an infaunal bivalve (hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria) was carried out. Two general size classes of clams were used, mean length ca. 40.0 mm (41.9 mm) and mean length ca. 20.0 mm (22.3 mm and 19.0 mm), to see if growth responses were the same for large- and small-sized clams. Seagrass density, length and species composition as well as sediment characteristics were measured at high- and low-energy sites to determine if changes in seagrass and/or sediment dynamics could explain observed …
Size-Dependent, Small-Scale Dispersion Of The Capitellid Polychaete, Mediomastus Ambiseta, Jeffrey Ellis Hughes
Size-Dependent, Small-Scale Dispersion Of The Capitellid Polychaete, Mediomastus Ambiseta, Jeffrey Ellis Hughes
Journal of Marine Research
Small(≈cm)-scale spatial pattern of an abundant capitellid polychaete, Mediomastus ambiseta Hartman, was investigated in sediments of central Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA from fall 1988 through spring 1992. Spatial autocorrelation techniques revealed a trend of decreasing patchiness and intensity of aggregation with increasing body size of M. ambiseta during the primary period of settlement and population growth (late summer-fall). The distribution and quality of particulate organic matter may explain the observed size-dependent spatial pattern. M. ambiseta influenced the small-scale distribution and concentration of organic matter and bacteria in surficial sediment. Experiments and field studies showed that this species creates two …

Sedimentation Of Phytoplankton During A Diatom Bloom: Rates And Mechanisms, Thomas Kiorboe, Jorgen L. S. Hansen, Alice L. Alldredge, George A. Jackson, Uta Passow, Hans G. Dam, David T. Drapeau, Anya Waite, Carlos M. Garcia
Journal of Marine Research
Phytoplankton blooms are uncoupled from grazing and are normally terminated by sedimentation. There are several potential mechanisms by which phytoplankton cells may settle out of the photic zone: sinking of individual cells or chains, coagulation of cells into aggregates with high settling velocities, settling of cells attached to marine snow aggregates formed from discarded larvacean houses or pteropod feeding webs, and packaging of cells into rapidly falling zooplankton fecal pellets. We quantified the relative significance of these different mechanisms during a diatom bloom in a temperate fjord, and evaluated their potential to control phytoplankton population dynamics. Overall specific sedimentation rates …
