Population Structuring And Patterns Of Morphological Variation In Californian Styrax (Styracaceae), Peter Fritsch Jan 1996

Population Structuring And Patterns Of Morphological Variation In Californian Styrax (Styracaceae), Peter Fritsch

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Recent studies of genetic variation within and among populations and phylogenetic estimates have provided evidence bearing on the evolutionary history and taxonomy of Styrax in California (S. redivivus). In this paper, data from these studies are further analyzed and integrated with new data from morphology to gain insight into the nature and taxonomic significance of character variation within this species. Six morphological characters thought to be important in the delimitation of infraspecific taxa within S. redivivus were measured on 52 herbarium specimens and analyzed with Pearson correlations and multivariate methods. Five characters are significantly associated with latitude and …

Aging And Heterogeneity: Genetics, Social Structure, And Personality, John M. Light, Jill S. Grigsby, Michelle C. Bligh Jan 1996

Aging And Heterogeneity: Genetics, Social Structure, And Personality, John M. Light, Jill S. Grigsby, Michelle C. Bligh

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Life-course studies of human development suggest that birth cohorts become more internally differentiated with respect to personality characteristics as their members age. This article examines possible explanations for this macro-level phenomenon in terms of three micro-level research traditions: (1) individual differentiation, (2) social structure/allocation, and (3) behavioral genetics. We conclude that each tradition can marshal credible empirical support, and that, therefore, all three are needed for a full understanding of older-age heterogeneity processes. A model is developed, synthesizing all three approaches. Study designs in any one of these traditions that fail to take account of the others are likely to …

Effects Of Logging Slash On Aspen Regeneration In Grazed Clearcuts, Mark A. Rumble, Timothy Pella, Jon C. Sharps, Arthur V. Carter, J. Barry Parrish Jan 1996

Effects Of Logging Slash On Aspen Regeneration In Grazed Clearcuts, Mark A. Rumble, Timothy Pella, Jon C. Sharps, Arthur V. Carter, J. Barry Parrish

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

In 1975, a quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) stand was clear-cut. Fencing and slash retention treatments designed to exclude or impede livestock-use were implemented. We evaluated the effects of these treatments on regeneration of aspen 19 years later. Leaving all slash was as effective as fencing for maintaining aspen regeneration and supported adequate density of saplings to meet recommendations for ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus). Shrub cover also was greater in treatments with slash and fencing. Unfenced treatments with slash less than 8 cm diameter retained, did not differ statistically from fenced treatments, but did not support adequate …

Analysis Of The Effects Of Overexpression Of Metallothionein-I In Transgenic Mice On The Reproductive Toxicology Of Cadmium., T Dalton, Kai Fu, G C Enders, R D Palmiter, G K Andrews

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Exposure to low levels of cadmium reduces fertility. In male mice spermatogenesis is highly sensitive to cadmium, whereas in females the peri-implantation period of pregnancy is sensitive. To examine the potential roles of the cadmium-binding protein, metallothionein (MT), in the reproductive toxicology of cadmium, we examined a transgenic mouse strain that overexpresses metallothionein-I (MT-I). These mice had dramatically increased steady-state levels of MT-I mRNA and MT in the testes and in the female reproductive tract during the peri-implantation period of pregnancy, and this overexpression occurred in a cell-specific and temporally regulated manner similar to that of the endogenous MT-I gene. …

Postings On A Genre Of E-Mail, Michael Spooner, Kathleen Yancey

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

I was talking with a novelist recently about various kinds of writing-nothing special, just happy-hour talk-and I found my earnest self assuring him that, oh yes, academic writing nowadays will tolerate a number of different styles and voices. (I should know, right? I'm in academic publishing.) He choked; he slapped my arm; he laughed out loud. I don't remember if he spit his drink back in the glass. Silly me, I was serious. And, among other things, I was thinking about this essay/dialogue, in which we're turning discourse conventions of the net - often a rather casual medium - to …

A Methodology For Drought Preparedness, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 1996

A Methodology For Drought Preparedness, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Drought is a normal, recurrent feature of climate that affects virtually all countries to some degree. The number of drought-induced natural disasters has grown significantly since the 1960s, largely as a result of increasing vulnerability to extended periods of precipitation deficiency rather than be-cause of an increase in the frequency of meteorological droughts. This increase in drought-induced natural disasters has resulted in a considerable growth of interest in drought mitigation and prepar-edness worldwide. The purpose of a national preparedness plan is to reduce societal vulnerability to drought through the adoption of preventive, anticipatory policies and programs. This paper de-scribes a …

8: Reducing The Impacts Of Drought: Progress Toward Risk Management, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Images of malnutrition, famine and a degraded African landscape were commonplace during the 1980s and appear likely to continue well into the 1990s and beyond. Glantz (1987) has shown that drought has hindered the ability of much of sub-Saharan Africa to achieve a sustained level of agricultural production and, as a result, has retarded progress toward economic development. Linkages between drought and economic development, although most obvious in Africa, exist throughout much of the developing world.

Higher-Order Associative Processing In Hermissenda Suggests Multiple Sites Of Neuronal Modulation., Ronald F. Rogers, Louis D. Matzel Jan 1996

Higher-Order Associative Processing In Hermissenda Suggests Multiple Sites Of Neuronal Modulation., Ronald F. Rogers, Louis D. Matzel

Faculty Publications

Two important features of modern accounts of associative learning are (1) the capacity for contextual stimuli to serve as a signal for an unconditioned stimulus (US) and (2) the capacity for a previously conditioned (excitatory) stimulus to "block" learning about a redundant stimulus when both stimuli serve as a signal for the same US. Here, we examined the process of blocking, thought by some to reflect a cognitive aspect of classical conditioning, and its underlying mechanisms in the marine mollusc Hermissenda. In two behavioral experiments, a context defined by chemosensory stimuli was made excitatory by presenting unsignalled USs (rotation) in …
