Total organic carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen (CHN) analyses were performed on 147 surficial sediment samples from study areas off the Norwalk Islands and Milford, Connecticut, in western Long Island Sound. The CHN data and gross lithologic descriptions of the sediments are reported herein. The concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC), hydrogen, and nitrogen in these samples average 1.54, 1.40, and 0.17 weight percent, respectively. The individual CHN concentrations vary inversely with grain size, with CHN values increasing with the percent fines. Increasing nutrient inputs and decreasing circulation cause TOC and nitrogen values to generally increase westward within the Sound. C/N …

The Dynamics Of Vocal, Morphological And Molecular Interaction Between Hybridizing Black-Capped And Carolina Chickadees, Gene D. Sattler
The Dynamics Of Vocal, Morphological And Molecular Interaction Between Hybridizing Black-Capped And Carolina Chickadees, Gene D. Sattler
Faculty Dissertations
Previous investigation of genetic interactions between black-capped and Carolina chickadees (Parus atricapillus and P. carolinensis) has been hindered by their morphological similarity, and by a paucity of differentiated genetic markers distinguishing them. Nine fixed or strongly differentiated restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers were developed, and one strongly differentiated allozyme locus was detected. These markers were used in conjunction with one fixed allozyme marker and three fixed RFLP markers previously available for these birds to examine interactions along their contact zone at three locations. A principal component analysis of mass, wing length and tail length revealed minimal morphological intermediacy at …

Behavioural Responses Of Rhipicephalus Appendiculatus Neumann 1901 And Rhipicephalus Evertsi Neumann 1897 (Acari: Ixodidae) To Host And Non-Host Semiochemicals, Sika Fra Kutua Noel
All PhD Dissertations
On-host observations and laboratory behavioural assays were undertaken to investigate the role played by (a) bovine host-derived semiochemicals from the ear and anal region and (b) semiochemicals derived from conspecifics, in feeding site location by unfed adults of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus Neumann and Rhipicephalus evensi Neumann. The potential of host-derived allomones from unpreferred feeding sites and that of a tick repellent plant, Ocimum suave Willd as disrupting factors to on-host orientation by the two tick species to their target sites were also assessed. Orientative behaviour of R. appendiculatus on host was characterized by stereotyped sequences of behaviours which included stationary/scanning phase, …

Modelling Productivity Of Indigenous Zebu Cattle (Bos Indicus) Under The Natural Field Conditions On Rusinga Island, Kenya, Hezron Oranga
All PhD Dissertations
The general objective of this study was to develop predictive models which could be used to determine pr oductivity (liveweight gain) losses attributed to various causal factors that are specific to livestock production systems as found in typical communities of small - scale peasant farmers in Africa. Factors of special interest were infestations by heliminths, arthropod vectors and their associated parasites, notably ticks and Thei1eria spp of parasites, tsetse flies and Trypanosoma spp . It was also noted that in the absence of diseases, nutrition was most important in determining calf growth and development. The goal of the study was …

Morphometric And Molecular Comparisons Of Two Isolated Populaions Of The Desert Locust, Schistocerca Gregaria (Orthoptera: Arcididae), Abdel F. Mohammed
All PhD Dissertations
In Africa, there are two well known subspecies of the desert locust: the sahara subspecies, Schistocerca gregaria gregaria (Forskal) and the southern west subspecies, Schistocerca gregaria flaviventris (Burmeister) . The sahara desert area, which is invaded by the S. g. gregaria is divided into three main regions: the north central region, south central and western regions. These populations are connected by migration circuits of swarms and gene flow occurs continuously between the populations. The invasion area of S. g. flaviventris covers an area of about 860,000 Km2 • It occurs in Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Angola and Ascension Islands. It …
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Physical Therapy Implications And Treatment Strategies, Mary L. Emerson
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Physical Therapy Implications And Treatment Strategies, Mary L. Emerson
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) describes physical and neurological (motor, cognitive, and behavioral) deficits that result from maternal alcohol intake during pregnancy. FAS is the leading cause of mental retardation and birth defects in the U.S., ahead of spina bifida, fragile X syndrome, and down's syndrome. The incidence of FAS increased more than three-fold from 1979 to 1992; this increasing incidence rate, enhances the importance of the Physical Therapists' role in early recognition and intervention of FAS. A review of current F AS research studies, reveals a need for additional resource information on FAS, regarding implications for Physical Therapy and possible …

Protecting The Environment For Future Generations: A Proposal For A Republican Superagency, Bradford Mank
Protecting The Environment For Future Generations: A Proposal For A Republican Superagency, Bradford Mank
Faculty Articles and Other Publications
Part I of this Article introduces the principle that the present generation owes duties to future generations. Part II argues that current environmental laws fail future generations. Part III argues that neither Congress nor the executive branch can protect future generations from environmental harms due to short-term political pressures. Part IV evaluates the current capabilities of agencies to plan for long-term environmental problems. Part V evaluates whether agencies may be capable of better long-term planning by creating a dialogue with the public. Part VI proposes a Superagency to protect the environmental interests of future generations. The Superagency would be independent …
Raptor Nesting Chronology In Northwestern North Dakota, Robert K. Murphy, John T. Ensign
Raptor Nesting Chronology In Northwestern North Dakota, Robert K. Murphy, John T. Ensign
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Nesting chronology of raptors is sparsely documented in North Dakota. During 1981-94, we determined hatching dates at 298 nest attempts by eight species of raptors on and within 10 km of Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge, northwestern North Dakota. Mean hatching dates for most common species were 17 April for great horned owl (Bubo virginianus)(SD = 8.4 days, n = 70 nests), 1 June for red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)(7.3, 99), 19 June for northern harrier (Circus cyaneus)(11.1, 37), 24 June for Cooper's hawk (Accipiter cooperii)(4.6, 19), and 27 June for Swainson's hawk ( …
Variation In Selection Of Microhabitats By Merriam's Turkey Brood Hens, Mark A. Rumble, Stanley H. Anderson
Variation In Selection Of Microhabitats By Merriam's Turkey Brood Hens, Mark A. Rumble, Stanley H. Anderson
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
We studied microhabitats of Merriam's turkey (Meleagris gallopavo merriami) brood hens in a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) ecosystem in South Dakota from 1986 to 1988. Cluster analysis indicated three groups of microhabitats, open-shrub, open-grass/forb and forest, based on vegetation characteristics at sites selected by brood hens. Poults of brood hen that selected open-shrub microhabitats were younger than those that selected forest microhabitats. Open-shrub and open grass/forb microhabitats had high herbaceous cover. Herbaceous vegetation provides habitat for invertebrates required in diets of poults and was selected by brood hens for feeding. Brood hens selected forest microhabitats more …

Residential Radon-222 Exposure And Lung Cancer: Exposure Assessment Methodology, R. William Field, Daniel J. Steck, Charles F. Lynch, Christine P. Brus, John S. Neuberger, Burton C. Kross
Physics Faculty Publications
Although occupational epidemiological studies and animal experimentation provide strong evidence that radon-222 (222Rn) progeny exposure causes lung cancer, residential epidemiological studies have not confirmed this association. Past residential epidemiological studies have yielded contradictory findings. Exposure misclassification has seriously compromised the ability of these studies to detect whether an association exists between 222Rn exposure and lung cancer. Misclassification of 222Rn exposure has arisen primarily from: 1) detector measurement error; 2) failure to consider temporal and spatial 222Rn variations within a home; 3) missing data from previously occupied homes that currently are inaccessible; 4) failure to link …

Since about the middle of the nineteenth century, American politics have been punctuated by the emergence, transformation, and marginalization of a women's movement. Beginning in 1848 with the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention and ending in 1920 with the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution, the first wave of the women's movement struggled toward the recognition of American women as United States citizens. After more than forty years of comparative inactivity, a second wave of the women's movement emerged in the mid-1960s which continued, extended, and challenged both the strategies used and the goals set by the first …
Patterns Of Soil Nitrogen Dynamics In A Central Appalachian Hardwood Forest Ecosystem, Bradley Michael Yurish
Patterns Of Soil Nitrogen Dynamics In A Central Appalachian Hardwood Forest Ecosystem, Bradley Michael Yurish
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Increasing awareness of the potential effects of acidic deposition prompted a watershed manipulation project at the Fernow Experimental Forest (FEF), West Virginia, in 1987. In this project, an acidifying agent, (Nf4)2S04 , was applied to an entire watershed to better understand ecosystem responses to simulated acid deposition in excess of ambient levels. In ecosystems receiving elevated N levels, increased soil N may contribute to soil acidification, lead to nutrient imbalances in plants, increase rates of nitrification, increase leaching of No3• and pollute surface waters. This study was designed to assess changes of three watersheds that received varied N inputs. The …
